Seven benefits of journaling

Warning: Journaling may need you to express your feelings, doodle and  is for the creative and artistic.

Summer, summer, summer. A two month break that we spend 10 months looking forward to each year. Yet, when we get those two months, we generally tend to spend most of that time with ourselves. So, why not discover who we are? A good friend of mine recently introduced me to this journaling craze when I was venting to her. Of course, she was a good friend and listened to me, but she also noticed the amount of emotions, ideas and thoughts I had bottled inside me. She suggested journaling as a stress-alleviating method that can also help get my creativity and artsy juices flowing and get rid of the potential boredom factor I may encounter through the summer.

Journal Prompt!
Journal Prompt!

As I looked into journaling and began, I realized that it’s not just a diary to vent the way you feel, but a safe place to explore your mind and grow as an individual. A place to express your ideas, opinions, and even judgement without harming anyone else. There are multiple reasons of keeping a journal, each including a different purpose, these are some of the different types of journals: artistic, gratitude, travel, dreams, reading, project, planning, creativity, etc.

#arsty

The journal I began about two weeks ago includes a bit here and there  from each of the different types listed above and more. As a result of my new found pass time, I came up with seven benefits to journaling:

1. Finding inner peace and alleviating stress– It’s better to have it all written out in words then a fist through a wall. Seriously.

2.  Record, React and Improve– By recording the events that have taken place within your life, your ability to measure and appreciate the change you’ve gone through as an individual is easier to see. You are able to see your weaknesses and reflect upon the mistakes you made, resulting in a new and improved you!

3. Redefine yourself– Through journaling, you are able to clearly see and state your beliefs, ideals and values. Therefore, you begin to appreciate the little things about you. For example, when flipping through your journal pages, you may feel a unique sense of accomplishment for the amount of work and effort you put into them. You cultivate open mindedness and learn how you wanted to be treated and reciprocate it to others.

4. Creativity and artistic juices get flowing!– You get to doodle in a very appropriate place, who doesn’t love to doodle?! You can even make up your own words, it’s YOUR journal, for YOURSELF, there’s not going to be any grammar police showing up (I promise).

Safe & Comfortable Space
Safe & Comfortable Space

5. Memories, Experiences & Growth– By recording events and stories that have taken place within your life, you get to keep things such as history, memories, and experiences alive. You continue to grow by reflecting on these valuable things that may be worth more later on.

6. Tune into your spirituality– How does journaling help this? By reflecting on your beliefs and values you are consistently getting closer to your soul and you tend to tune into your spiritual and moral compass. You get to confess and reconcile in a safe place.

7. Gratitude– You become more aware of the little things around you and enjoy them more!

These are a minimal amount of reasons why journaling is very healthy and positive! Hopefully you are able to find it within yourself to begin tracking your extraordinary life.

Mosquito bite home remedies: This includes fire

0

Alright, so I am 80 per cent sure that summer is here to stay and doesn’t disappear in the dead of night. That’s what my dreams do (ba dum tss). But with summer comes with the awful creations put here on Earth in order to turn me into a gross puffy mess – mosquitoes.

Also known as tiny little vampires who steal MY LIFE ESSENCE WITHOUT PERMISSION. EXCUSE YOU – RUDE. Anyway after being bitten multiple times and having lost enough blood to make myself eligible for a transfusion, the itching began to flare up.

And oh did it ever. My left forearm was so swollen people thought it was a bee sting. My legs were so red from the constant scratching everybody thought I was a tourist coming back from Florida. But alas, it was only mosquitoes. So in a desperate attempt to quell the white swollen lumps on my limbs, I went to Google to look for cures. I took the liberty of experimenting some of these on myself – WHICH YOU SHOULD NOT DO. I already mentioned this in one of my posts – I am not a good role model. I’m a 16 year old hermit who blew up a tent (with fireworks, if you were wondering) and doesn’t know how to spend wisely.

The very first method I tried was lancing it. Lancing is usually reserved for disgusting boils and YouTube videos that you stumble upon at 3 a.m. after binge watching cats stuck in things. Usually you use a hypodermic needle or a thin needle of some sort to create needlea hole in the offending lump and extract the fluid that makes it lumpy. In this case, I’m attempting to extract the anticoagulant that mosquitoes inject in you in order to have a constant flow of blood. This is also what makes mosquito bites itchy along with mosquito proteins that also happen to get injected into you when they’re stealing YOUR LIFE ESSENCE. Anyway, since I didn’t have a hypodermic needle I attacked my biggest bite with a safety pin that I stuck in a lighter flame for a few seconds because you know, science.

The result?

With excessive amounts of squeezing a clear fluid out of it that was definitely not blood. The itch subsided for a couple days but it swelled quite a bit afterwards. “But Jess! Aren’t you scarring yourself?” cries the concerned reader (if I have any).

Only mentally, my friend. Only mentally.

Since some of my bites have subsided I’ll probably scratch them until they form a ridiculous lump again which means MORE SELF-TESTING FOR REMEDIES!

Next up: Essential oils – which ones work, which ones smell nice, which ones repel mosquitoes and which ones repel cute boys.

A “mind” boggling kick off to the World Cup

On June 12, 2014, as the world tuned in to watch the commencement of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the first kick off to the games was done by a paraplegic man.

Check out this video of the ceremonial kick:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZrvdODe1QI

The 29 year-old man by the name of Juliano Pinto was joined by seven other paraplegics as they walked together onto the field, equipped with robotic exoskeletons, controlled with the mind. This technology uses brain waves to control the movements of the robotic system. The Walk Again Project is responsible for these revolutionary technologies. The international collaborative effort is led by a Brazilian neuroscientist, Miguel Nicolelis at Duke University in Durham, N.C and works with scientists from all around the globe.

The patients wear a head gear and are asked to think about moving. Sensors detect the information and allows for hydraulic drivers to move the exoskeleton , thus, allowing for movement of the lower limbs.

This revolutionary technology validates the further development of not only the possibilities in the world of science but for hope that one day, people who lack the ability to walk, will be able to do so. We are surely walking in the right direction.

Four things to do this summer

0

As we all know, summer is arriving! Many of us will be busy with all kinds of different things, from visiting your relatives overseas, to just sitting down and watching TV. Today, I will look at some of the great things you can do to make excellent use of your summer time.

1. Relax

imgres

For the past 10 months, you have been working extremely hard (hopefully). You’ve been staying on top of your schoolwork, participating in competitions, practicing an instrument, playing a sport, volunteering, and joining various school clubs. Finally, summer has come! So sit back and relax. You’ve been so busy for a majority of the year, and you just haven’t had time to relax. Summer is a great because you don’t have any work to do, and you can lounge around all day. This can help relieve stress. You also get to sleep in, which many of us are probably looking forward to!

2. Get outside

images

We live in Calgary, where the weather is very unpredictable. For most of the year, it’s either snowing, raining, or the leaves might be falling. When summer hits Calgary, there’s nothing better. Our wonderful city looks just fantastic in the summer; blue sky, green grass, swaying trees. Many people vacation during the summer, but I would personally prefer vacationing during the school year (winter/spring break) to escape winter, and stay in Calgary during the summer! Calgary has one of the best pathway systems in all of North America, so I would strongly recommend biking or walking. Spend time with your friends and play some sports. Summer only lasts for two months, so you should try to make the most of it.

3. Volunteer!

imgres-1

If you aren’t planning on vacationing, why not spend you’re free time volunteering? I’m not saying to volunteer every single day and kill yourself, just do it as you please. There’s nothing better than dedicating your time for the benefit of others. I would personally recommend volunteering in an outdoor environment, since it is summer. This way, you can get the reward of helping others while enjoying the amazing weather. As a matter of fact, I plan on volunteering as a Mountain Bike Assistant at Winsport Canada myself.

4. Set goals

imgres-2

Setting goals plays a major part in having success in the future! Learn from your mistakes. For example, you might have been a lazy person who never finished their work this year. You might plan on fixing this for next year, and you can achieve this with a little determination and will-power. What have you learned this year that will help you change for next year. If you weren’t involved in extra-curricular activities, you might want to try that next year. If you were playing video games too much, try limiting your screen time. It’s all about you, and what you feel needs to be done differently. If you want to be successful in the future, then start setting goals.

Miranda Sings in Calgary!

1

I am writing this blog post this week because my absolute favorite YouTuber, Miranda Sings, is coming to do a live show in Calgary! She will be here on October 23 at MacEwan Hall at the University of Calgary for a night full of comedy, magic and of course, singing.

Miranda Sings is a character on YouTube played by the lovely Colleen Ballinger, who is famous for her iconic “singing voice” and hilarious sarcasm.  If you are looking to watch someone serious, I suggest you look somewhere else. Contrary to Miranda, Colleen is actually an amazing singer who happens to be the vocal coach of Ariana Grande. She was inspired to create Miranda from seeing all of the really bad covers that people had put on YouTube as a way to parody them and show people what not to do, but after a while, her vision changed. Miranda Sings is an outrageous girl with a funny accent and some interesting habits. Some people do not understand the comedy or value behind her videos and find her quite annoying, but I am obsessed with her. I love to walk around and talk like her and put on an act around my friends. I suppose her videos are an aquired taste but I assure you, they will keep you entertained. So if you are a fan, or are looking for some cheap entertainment, I highly suggest you check out her videos on YouTube and go to her upcoming show on October 23! you can buy tickets to go see the show here

Five bizarre things we did as kids

Didn’t we all do really strange stuff when we were younger? Some of my fondest memories come from doing things that I would probably not be caught dead doing now. With all this childhood nostalgia, here is my list of the top five odd things that most of us did as kids. Hopefully you can relate to it!

1. Avoiding the cracks in the sidewalk

Pretty much every kid to ever exist has done this at least, well, a million times. I remember as a child my father telling me the rhyme, “Step on the crack, break your mother’s back,” so I paid extra attention to avoid the cracks!

2. Using empty wrapping paper/paper towel rolls as swords

Empty paper towel tubes were the ultimate in childhood weapons, no questions asked. But the moment when our parents told us to stop messing around and put the tube down was always the worst (I can’t possibly be the only one that happened to).

3. “The floor is lava!”don't touch the floor

Ah, what a classic. This one sort of explains itself; the game of jumping over furniture and other obstacles while trying not to hit the floor, as it would mean a fiery and painful death. Some day, I’d like to gather a group of friends just as passionate as myself about this silly game and play the ultimate round.

4. Drinking grape juice as wine

There’s nothing like drinking plain old unfermented grape juice out of a wine glass to make a kid feel classy. Heck, it didn’t have to be grape juice, it could be pretty much any kind of beverage; pop, water and even milk could do the trick.

5. Pushing down all the colours on multi-coloured pens

…Which usually resulted in totally jamming the pen, am I right? Not that something like that would deter us from trying it again to see if it would work THIS TIME. Oh, did we ever learn?

Sometimes I miss the simpler times, where we could just make up something random and call it a game, or use household materials in rather unconventional ways. Our childhoods shaped who we are, no matter how strange we were.

#changetour: Mini We Day at Bishop O’ Bryne!

0

Last week, Bishop O’Bryne High school had the opportunity to be apart of the We Create Change tour, (Check out the video above) hosted by the notably young amazing changemaker Hannah Alper, the motivational speaker Spencer West, and the Canadian music band, Neverest. I was aware that there was going to be some kind of We Day event at my school, but little did I know that things were about to get hectic very quickly.

What started out as an ordinary school day took a turn with the principal announcing that Hedley was down at the office! Skeptism and confusion quickly turned into excitement when Jacob Hoggard, the lead singer of Hedley came on and announced they would be taking over the school. This was in the morning around the beginning of second period, and, needless to say, fans of the band along with some curious students all came rushing to the office. The result looked like this:

Screenshot_2014-06-04-23-05-17-1
Crowds all around!

And off Jacob’s instagram account, where he and his band members were in the office, the outside looked something like this:

Yes. Yes They did. :)
Yes. Yes They did. 🙂

I’d like to say that I was one of those students crowding around the office, but I headed to class instead (education is important, guys!) since I knew they were going to be at the event in the afternoon. Thanks to all the fundraising campaigns our school had done over the year, such as the We are Love and We are Silent, we had earned a spot on the Change Tour, and with all the extra effort we did, got a special visit from Hedley and MTV. It was quite awesome to say the least, and definitely a highlight to the school year. After the suprise announcement and once the crowds died down, the guys from Hedley wandered around the school and dropped by some classes – none of mine, sadly.

The really amazing part came at the end of the day, when the We Create Change Tour show started. Hannah Alper, the first speaker of the afternoon, told us a little bit about herself and how she got started creating change. I was amazed at how she was only 11, as she spoke much like an adult, but that made her speech all the more inspiring. Seeing a young girl like her actively doing what she can, turning her words into actions, really does make me feel like we create change, even if it’s only bit by bit.

Right after, we got treated to a musical interlude by Neverest with their new single, Starlight, where we got to sing along. It was great being able to clap and sing along, and you could really feel the spirit of the school.

WCCT-06-03-2014-Bishop-OByrne-Catholic-School-Photo-by-Olivia-Gissing164353

Then, we got to see Spencer West, the very man who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro using his hands and wheelchair. He told us a little bit about his early life, and how he overcame living without his legs. He showed us the importance of education for kids in Africa, and encouraged us to continue helping out in the initiative to build schools, brick by brick. He really showed us the great things of efforts were going towards, and definitely gave me a new view on just what our fundraising was doing.

bishopfeature

And last but not least, we ended off with Hedley, a great finale that got everyone smiling, singing, and jumping around in general with their hit Anything.

This day is one that I’m sure I won’t ever forget. It was so inspirational seeing all the great things we were doing, and what others are doing as well. Learning about just where our efforts were going, as well as learning about others and all the amazing things they do to contribute was just so awesome. Backed by the two coolest Canadian bands just made it all the more memorable. I even got to take a picture with Neverest! 🙂 Screenshot_2014-06-03-19-33-01-1-1I’m glad to be a part of this school. Go Bobcat Nation!

Shots of Awe: Inspirational Videos

Source
Source

Welcome to Shots of Awe, a YouTube channel where filmmaker Jason Silva explores the wonder and beauty of life.

We were all children once, with heads full of wild imagination and curiosity of the world. Who says we have to forget that when we grow up?

Jason Silva blends breath-taking cinematography with deep philosophical discussions to create Shots of Awe. These short videos whisk us away to the rapturous supernovas of stars all the way to a single blade of grass. In the image above, the eye is filled with galaxies, embodying the boundless brilliance that exists within us and also far, far away.

I will share my three personal favourites, but certainly each of his videos is a masterpiece in of itself.

Prepare to be inspired.

Awe

Awe – an experience of such perceptual vastness you literally have to reconfigure your mental models of the world to assimilate it.

Nonconformity and the Creative Life

“And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music”
-Nietzsche

Existential Bummer

Transience – the state or fact of lasting only a short time

What now?

We all need a shot of awe from time-to-time, to remind us of how amazing our world is. In our increasingly busy lives, we can often forget the small joys and memories that makes it precious. We all have the potential to be great if we put our minds to what we love – perhaps all we need is that push, that inspiration. All of us will eventually reach the same destination, so what’s left is to enjoy the journey. Never forget your sense of wonder and imagination because  those are a splash of color in our black and white lives.

Glenbow Museum: Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Gallery

0

Recently, my class went to the Glenbow Museum to examine the Beaverbrook Exhibit. I was hesitant at first and had my doubts; I thought this was just going to be another exhibit on beavers and Canadian history. But, it turned out to be quite the opposite.

Lord Beaverbrook was a close friend of Winston Churchill’s and had an extensive art collection. The Glenbow Museum got some of the pieces on loan from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in New Brunswick, and I would highly suggest taking a look.

The pieces range all the way from classic renaissance art to pieces from Dali and Matisse. One of my favorite pieces was The Fountain of Indolence, a piece heavily influenced my Greek and Roman culture.

Automated cars via Google

Google’s self-driving cars have been able to drive 300 000 miles without a single accident. (Retrieved from San Francisco Citizen)

Google’s autonomous vehicle, which is able to transport two passengers, has made headlines with its revolutionary computer technology. (Forbes) The self-driving cars have no steering wheel, brake or accelerator, just buttons to start the car and pull over. The car is able to navigate through the use of Google Maps.

Autonomous cars would take the burden off of driving for many civilians as well as take over the driving industry. This includes the industry reformation of long-haul truck drivers. In recent light of Tracy Morgan’s accident, caused by the fatigue of a Walmart truck hauler, the need for such technology seems more pertinent for a growing world. Although this would eliminate jobs in the industry, it may be a difference of preserving a human life.

Peter Fuss of EY Global Automative Centre believes that autonomous cars may be roaming our streets within the next ten years. The Department of Motor Vehicles in California is expected to issue the first licences for self-driving cars. Whilst in Great Britain, ministers are also reforming their policies to suit British roads for these new vehicles. (The Telegraph). With the revolution of such technology, the rest of the world, along with its legislation must catch up to allow for these types of technology to thrive.

The efforts of Google has propelled the world’s technology industry. Volvo has also been at work with similar variations as well and with current accidents being caused as a result of 95 per cent human error, Google’s self-driving cars may be just what the world needs to stay driven.

Places to go: Specialty food stores

0

With exception of number five on the list (the restaurant supply store), for this list, speciality usually means expensive. So while not to do your daily grocery shopping at, these stores are interesting to browse through and quite often air-conditioned as well.

place5place6

1. The luxury store – Mercato’s

The main value in going to Mercato—once quite a nice store, or so I hear, and now mainly a (likely more profitable) restaurant—is to admire the prices. This is also coupled with great quality (although one basis of comparison can also be found in the whole Nanuk smoked salmon, around $60 at Mercato or less than half of the price at T&T).

place3Place4

2. The health food store - Amaranth

Their central location on 4 St and not far from 17 Ave is small and airy. You can find interesting things such as powdered peanut butter and a large variety of local Hotchkiss greenhouse microgreens. They’re not afraid to discount their produce.

My favourite, however, is one I haven’t visited it recently (thus the lack of photos): the Sunnyside Natural Market has been there for ages, always smells good, and is a contender for the aesthetically pleasing market.

place8

3. The aesthetically pleasing store – Bridgeland Market

A vintage bike with a basket full of flowers stands parked outside, and the same charm is carried throughout the interior of the store.

In other words, contrived. But with such lovely ceilings that I hardly care. Additionally, this only gives me appreciation for all the work that must have gone into designing such a picturesque store, something that appears impossible to exist naturally in Calgary.

place1Place2

4. That kitschy store – Edelweiss Village

Edelweiss Village has a curious combination of kitschy and quality—the Saub cookware that lines the shelves is juxtaposed against animal shaped salt and pepper shakers. The shopping demographic (although I did go midday) was mainly a contingent of elderly European ladies. If they approve, I suppose it must be a good place to go.

The prepared food and deli was primarily German, but otherwise there was a fair amount of other European influence. Norway in lutefisk, lefse, pickled herring and krumkake irons (I summarized my complete knowledge of Norway just there), Danish Aebelskiver pans and Dutch stroopenwafels.

place7

5. The restaurant supply store – B & J Restaurant Supply

A bit crowded (with so many things!) and absolutely lovely. Well, not really for buying food, but for buying dishes.

One last word: this was somewhat constructive in helping me get over my embarrassment of taking photos in restaurants and stores–but then again, judging by how blurry a number of photos were, not actually, as I was trying to be secretive and a bit too quick.
