The importance of gratitude

Approximately how many people do we encounter in our lives per day? Per month? Per year? Well, I’m no statistics major, but according to the blog Golden Ripples you meet approximately 733,000 people in your lifetime. I’m not sure how accurate that statistic is, but regardless, we all encounter many people from various walks of life who tend to inspire us, support us, guide us, love us, and care for us. And how many of these people do we express our gratitude for?

My performing arts instructor and life coach once said to me, “The more you express the gratitude for the happiness you have in your life, the higher the chance of it continuing to bestowed upon you.”

Gratitude-is-the-open-door-to-abundance

Undoubtedly that is the truth. With the everyday pressures of life and expectations society has of us we tend to forget to appreciate the people in our lives that act like a candle light in the dark tunnel of overwhelming stress and everyday issues that occur in our lives. Unfortunately we neglect to recognize the people whom encourage us reach for the stars and accomplish our dreams and aspirations. We neglect to appreciate those who love us for our angels and demons. “We often take for granted the very little things that most deserve or gratitude.” -Unknown

Gratitude-Quote-Oprah-Winfrey

The people you meet in your lives will be transient, no one ever stays forever, however those who leave a mark and inspire you to strive for excellence are those you must be thankful for. And no, being grateful isn’t just thinking about how fortunate you are to have such people in your life, but being grateful is expressing that gratitude to let those people know you appreciate that impact they have in your life. Because when people feel like they are making a positive difference in others lives, are wanted and loved, they tend to want to continue being that optimistic energy in your life.

So today I challenge you to express your gratitude to the individuals in your lives that love you without all the layers of paint you protect yourself with against the expectations of society, I challenge you to tell them what they mean to you and how lucky you are to have them in your life. Because who knows if they will be here tomorrow, the future isn’t permanently sketched into stone, the future is in your hands and if you wish to have the people you love apart of your lives, always acting like your guiding light, be sure to express your gratitude. It’s as easy as saying “thank you for being apart of my life.” Do you think you can do it?

gratitude-quotes

Gratitude is a precious and underused gift. It is worth more than a million dollars and can be given whenever and where ever. Be sure to pass on this beautiful gift to those who inspire you to let them know what they mean to you. From experience, it is better to do it now than later, because there is always the possibility that later never comes.

Photo editing made fun with PicMonkey

Picmonkey Cover2

PicMonkey is a free photo editing website that I use to create visuals for my blog posts. Today, I’m going to share easy tricks and tips to adding some jazz to your images.

First off, why should you edit your photos at all?

Whether it’s for blogging or personal use, photo editing can give images a more professional look and allow you to add your personal touch. Best of all, it’s simpler to do than most people think. With a few clicks and drags, you can transform an average photo into something special.

Why should you use PicMonkey?

Unlike other photo editing software like Photoshop, which can be pricey and complicated to master, I found PicMonkey to be easy to learn while still providing a variety of quality editing tools for free. Not only is the interface user-friendly, it is also constantly updated with new features. PicMonkey can be used for basic editing, adding filters, text, touch-ups, making collages and much and much more.

I will not be going every single feature in detail, but I will equip you with enough information to try it out for yourself. So without further ado, let’s begin!

Where to Start

Default
Home Screen

The name of the website is: www.picmonkey.com

You’ll be taken to a home screen similar to the one above. Click on Edit, select your image or one of their preexisting images and you’ll be taken to the editing interface.

Default 2

I’ve chosen this photo of my writing at enjoying some Starbucks (mhm) I’m going to be showing my typical process with editing.

The Basics

SidebarThe editor defaults to the Basic Edits section, where you can find the standard tools of the trade.

Auto Adjust will automatically adjust the image to what it thinks looks best. It’s good if you’re lazy, but for any project, the more effort you put in, the better it looks.

Crop is like any other crop tool. However, it has the added feature of being able to select specific dimensions such as 4×6 or 8×10. This is useful if you’re planning to print your photo at a studio.

Canvas Color is not recommended because it will completely replace your image with a solid color. It should be used in Design (found on home screen) where you start off with a blank canvas.

Rotate allows you to straighten any slanted images and also flip them clockwise/counterclockwise.

Exposure will need to be adjusted on most photos. Common cases are images being too dark or overexposed. Use exposure to make sure you have the perfect lighting.

Colors adjusts saturation and temperature (how blue or orange the images are) It also has an added feature of Neutral Picker where it will balance the picture if your colors are off.

Sharpen is useful to sharpen an image that is slightly out-of-focus. Be wary though, because if you adjust it too much, it can turn out to be scratchy and unnatural.

Resize is useful for resizing images without losing quality.

The Fun (Filters)

Effects Collage

On most camera apps, you’ll have filters that will add an effect to your image. Well, PicMonkey has an abundance of them for you to experiment with.

There’s too many to go into depth about what they do, but the visuals should give you an idea.

I should mention that some features are Royale, indicated by a small white crown. This means that in order to use these features without a PicMonkey watermark, you must pay a small fee. I personally don’t use them because there are already enough features to meet my needs, but if you’re interested: http://www.picmonkey.com/#register

Effect Examples
Examples

I played around with different effects, but decided on a combination of Black and White + Dusk. Since it was a bit dark, I made some tweaks in Exposure to fit my taste.

Transformation

The Cool (Textures)

Texture Collage

In Textures, you’ll be able to overlay images on top of each other to create interesting effects. The two above were created using Space and Light Trails. If those don’t satisfy you, you also have the option of using Your Own textures, which is what I did.

Texture Overlay

Portrait of a Writer
Taken from this post

I scoured the web for some photos and found an awesome one that fit my idea. With a bit more fine-tuning, this was the final product:

Other Goodies (Text, Overlays & Frames)

We have a finished piece, but I didn’t get to showcase the other cool features that I often use for my blog posts. Other Goodies

PicMonkey already has a collection of stylish fonts and it allows you to use the ones downloaded onto your computer as well. My go-to’s are Tall Dark and Handsome and Amantic Small Caps.

Clicking on the butterfly icon will take you to Overlays, but I like to think of them as stickers. There you’ll find an assortment of objects ranging from facial hair to banners that you can insert into your design.

Lastly, there is the Frames section where like a real photo, you can frame your masterpiece. My favorite is Museum Matte.

Using a mixture of techniques, I was able to create the header photo for this blog.

Picmonkey Cover2

Conclusion

I hope you learned something new today and apply it to your lives. It’s all about exploring – you’re encouraged to play around with the different tools. For beginners and veterans alike, there’s always fresh ideas to try out in PicMonkey.

I didn’t get to cover every single thing, so I may write another post in the future covering other topics. If you do have questions, feel free to comment below or search online. Remember: photo editing can be a lot of fun.

The Calgary Youth Art Exhibition

0

“Empowering youth artistic spirit through by encouraging expression, conversation and celebration.”

The motto of an initiative founded in 2013 by two driven, determined and passionate high school students, the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition is ready to become an integral part in helping young artists develop, as well as find a platform for their work.

Truly a story of awesome youth, proving that youth are truly awesome, Vicky Xiao and Tracy Li have spent countless hours, days, weeks and months in order to finally launch the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition. The purpose of the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition (CYAE) is to allow young artists within the City of Calgary to expose themselves and their artwork to the world. Furthermore, artists will be able to gain recognition, constructive criticism, and of course, complements and praise for all their hard work. The most unique part of the CYAE is that artists will be provided with a new network to socialize, collaborate, and discuss with fellow young artists. An upcoming exhibition which will be held at the High Grounds Café will feature the work of founders Tracy Li and Vicky Xiao among many other talented young artists.

Your work can be showcased from August the 1st to August the 15th at the High Grounds Cafe alongside Vicky and Tracy’s! The deadline for submission is Saturday July the 5th. Please visit the website for more information, and be sure to continue reading!

I had the absolute honor and privilege of speaking with founders Vicky and Tracy about the CYAE and their upcoming, inaugural showcase at the High Grounds Café.

Check out the official website!

Arron: What was your primary motivation in creating the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition? What do you feel this group can offer to aspiring young artists?

Tracy Li: I wanted Calgary to have a platform for their youth to display their artistic talents in the community. I’ve been to several Calgary Art Walks, usually held in the fall. The Calgary Art Walk is a weeklong collective initiative amongst the primary professional exhibitions and art studios of Downtown Calgary. It’s a wonderful free event, open to the general public, which allows art-goers to check out the pieces of established local artists. Furthermore, the artists themselves are often at the exhibitions, making it a wonderful social experience. However, these exhibitions provided little exposure for emerging local artists, let alone youth artists. Therefore, I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for Calgary’s artistic youth to display their art in a public setting, where they can discuss with one another about their art, and even potentially sell their art to captivated viewers. I think that the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition creates initiative and a common goal amongst youth artists.  They will want to create more pieces, express themselves in an environment filled with pieces of self-expression from similar others, and acquaint with new people.

 __________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: What can aspiring artists do if they want to become involved with the CYAE? What are the requirements of joining?

Tracy Li:We welcome all interested individuals event, follow up on art updates (including pictures of any art submissions that we’ve received) whether you’re an artist, appreciator or supporter. For artists wanting to submit their artwork, all they need to do is follow the submission instructions listed on our Facebook page and website. It’s super simple, and takes very little time! Send us your art and submission information at youthartexhibition@gmail.com. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us through either Facebook or our email!

 __________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: What was your first experience with the visual arts?

Vicky Xiao: To be honest, I don’t really remember when I started to draw. When I was around four or five years old, one of my favorite hobbies involved doodling cartoon drawings on pieces of print paper and cutting up my drawings to create makeshift puzzles. But my interest in the visual arts was probably first sparked when my parents first started bringing me to art classes. It was my first time meeting artists who were much older and more skilled than I was. That kind of exposure to, and interaction, with different and more talented artists really inspired me to work harder on my own artwork. One of my biggest reasons for spearheading this event is my hope that the CYAE can help accomplish something similar for other artists as those art classes once did for me!

__________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: What is your favorite medium of art? What about it elevates it above the others?

Vicky Xiao: Oil paint, without a doubt. It can create almost anything you like. You can create jaunting, angular images like Max Beckmann in Expressionism, or soft imagery like George Seurat in Pointillism. You can make a scene come to life in so many techniques in oil paint.

 ___________________________________________________________________________

Arron: Besides the grueling workout that is creating art, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Vicky Xiao: I’m a huge science geek! I spend a lot of time helping out with science club at school and doing research on the history of my community, Mission-Cliff Bungalows. I also spend a lot of time gaming.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: Who do you look up to as an inspiration figure/model as an artist?

Vicky Xiao: Stylistically, I’m a big fan of art nouveau artists like Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha. These are two artists who are clearly technically talented, but also use symbolism and abstract images to convey thematic and emotional meaning in a way that pure realism can’t. Their art is surreal and dreamlike, but not so abstract that it becomes unrelatable. That’s a kind of balance that I strive to achieve in my art. As for a more modern example, I find a lot of inspiration in playing minimalist but atmospheric games such as Journey or Shadow of the Colossus.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: Why did you ultimately choose the Higher Ground Café as your venue?

Vicky Xiao: We wanted a location that boasted a community feel (and offered great food too of course). It’s a very relaxed environment, tightly-spaced, with the number of chairs outnumbering the number of tables by far. It’s a favorite hangout spot for so many, and we are confident that many artists and museum viewers wove its atmosphere.

__________________________________________________________________________________

Arron: What is your favorite menu item at the Higher Ground Café?

Vicky Xiao: I’m particularly fond of their green tea lattes!

__________________________________________________________________________________

The Calgary Youth Art Exhibition is an excellent organization for any aspiring young artists to get involved with. Whether you are just beginning, or are a decorated veteran, be sure to get in contact with the Calgary Youth Art Exhibition. Also, be sure not to miss the artwork showcase at the Higher Grounds Café which will be premiering on August the 1st and running to August the 15th!

What YAA loves about summer: Ice Cream Trucks!

0

If there’s one way to tell that it’s summer, its the familiar tunes of ice cream trucks driving around the neighborhood, like this one right here.

download (10)

Maybe it’s just me, but one of my favorite things about summer is ice cream trucks. You have to admit that at some point in time you have bought some type of cool treat from them. People just know when they come around by the music they play. And I’ll bet I’m not the only one who has gone outside or at least looked out a window when I heard the melody of an ice cream truck play. Whenever I think of one, fond memories of me chasing after them as a kid always come rushing back. They always had the best varieties of popsicles and ice cream, and whenever they stopped or drove around, kids finishing school would flock from all over, scrambling with change in their pockets for the hope of buying something cold and sweet on a hot summer day before everything got sold out. The excitement upon seeing the truck, the anticipation of it stopping, and the happiness that comes when you finally get your hands on that cold sweet delicacy that instantly cools you down on a warm summer day, are probably some of the best feelings in the world, especially when it`s with friends.

Some of the great selections that I’ve seen over the years.

In any case, you’re never too old to indulge in the joy of finding and buying something from an ice cream truck. I haven’t seen any recently around my neighborhood, but if there ever is one coming around you’ll be sure to find me eagerly going towards it. Anyone else have sweet memories of ice cream trucks? If you do, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!

My fave restaurant: Buffalo Wild Wings

0

Buffalo Wild Wings is a restaurant that has pub style decor, but is not a pub.

Capture

To start, I ordered the soft pretzels and they were quite good with the standard cheese sauce, but you can also choose from a selection of 17 sauces for no extra charge, which is pretty cool. Soon after the wings came, I happened to be in a group so I was able to try out 5 sauces (5 of the 17). All sauces were delicious, but I enjoyed the Asian zing most. The food was spectacular and was beyond what I expected.

Capture

The menu has a large selection, from pretzels to wings and even burgers. But even though the menu does have a large variety, it does not cater towards vegetarians or dietary needs.

The service started off a bit dull as the waitress was not smiling and did not seem happy to be there. She took our orders and tended to us quite well. At a later point, the manager began to chat with us a bit and see how we liked our food. Overall the service was good as it did its job and was somewhat entertaining.

Food 5/5

Menu 3/5

Service 4/5

Overall I give this restaurant a 4/5  because the food was great, the menu had variety but lacked accommodation and the service had its ups and downs but did its job.

3 things to do in Calgary this Summer

0
FolkFest
source

Are you tired of being bored all summer? If so I have created a great list of things you can do this summer right here in Calgary!

1. Summer festivals

There are so many different and unique festivals in Calgary all throughout the summer. Try going to the Sun and Salsa festival, or catch up on your folk music with the Folk Music festival or even show your pride at the Calgary Pride parade! Check out this website for a list of all of the festivals happening this summer. You may even find that some of them are free to attend; what a bonus!

2. Go play!

Although it may seem like it, amusement parks aren’t just for little kids; they can actually be super fun! Hanging out at Calaway Park or something as simple as Lazer Tag with your friends is a great way to have fun in the summer. (Don’t forget to go to Stampede this July!)

3.Go shopping downtown

Going downtown is a great place to go shopping, while still being out in the summer heat. 17th Ave is one of the best places to go shopping and has tons of great restaurants for lunch. I suggest checking out the pin-up style dresses at Blame Betty, the amazing sunglasses at Used- House of Vintage, and the stylish clothing and lomography at Dick and Jane’s!

Fuel Your Summer Workout: Go Greens!

During the summer months, the warm weather has many of us content to spend our days lounging around and enjoying the sun. While this may seem like a relaxing way to spend the summer, it’s important to also make the time to get enough physical exercise.

Most teenagers don’t relish the idea of getting up bright and early to avoid being out in the heat of the day, and often later in the evening, teenagers may find themselves occupied with other activities and without time to exercise. On days like these, it is easy to simply just brush off exercise as something that will miraculously occur sometime in the near future, and that’s when dedication and technique comes into play.

On a hot day, a cold drink is always a great way to cool off, especially after physical activity like running or hiking. Here’s a great recipe for a cool and tasty smoothie that also packs a nutritional punch to keep you running at your very best.

A green smoothie can be refreshing and healthy on a hot day
A green smoothie can be refreshing and healthy on a hot day

Green Smoothie:

1/2 c. blueberries (I use frozen)

1 banana (I freeze this as well to make for a smoother texture)

1 to 1 and 1/2 c. mixed greens, spinach, kale, or other leafy greens

1/4 c. yogurt (I use plain)

1/4 c. carrots

1/4 to 1/2 c. liquid (I use iced green tea, but juice will work as well)

1.c ice (if desired)

Simply put all the ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth, and enjoy!

For those new to having “green” smoothies I would recommend reducing the greens to blueberries ratio, as green smoothies can taste a little more bitter than most are used to. That being said, over time it is a taste that is definitely acquired, and is a great way to get in enough servings of antioxidant rich leafy greens, while enjoying a cool drink on a warm summer day!

The truth behind the 2014 FIFA World Cup

Like many of you, I am enjoying watching the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The colourful festivities, the beauty of soccer, and the coming together of the world. It all seems beautiful, right? Unfortunately, this great sporting event has a much more darker side. As you might have seen, there have been many violent protests breaking out in Brazil. These protests have been occurring because of forced evictions, unnecessary spending, and the citizens unwillingness to host the FIFA World Cup.

brazil-protests-june2013
Brazilian protesters expressing their concern on the financial toll the World Cup will have on the economy

In order to build many of the structures needed for the World Cup, the Brazilian authorities evicted many residents.  According to many sources, as much as 200,000 residents have been forcefully removed from their homes in the favelas.

“An independent documentary called “Casas Marcadas” (Marked Houses) reveals that the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Housing Department (SMH) marked hundreds of houses with codes in preparation for sending bulldozers to tear them down, without any prior notice or personal contact with the residents. The price of properties sold in these communities, even restricted to the informal market and with low quality construction, reach R$100 thousand.”-An article written by Anthony Ling

If this wasn’t enough, the Brazilian government is spending about $14 billon dollars on the Cup while many citizens are struggling to have their basic needs met. The Manaus Stadium took $270 million dollars to build, but the thing is, it will only be used for four World Cup games. After those four games, there is a likely chance it will never be used again! According to John Oliver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlJEt2KU33I) Brazil is allowing FIFA to forgo $250 million dollars in taxes!

police
Police trying to contain a portest

This year’s World Cup has caused an increase in the Brazilian prostitution business. Young boys and girls are being sold into this industry and are ordered to hang around foreigner hot spots to sell sex. Some of these children are abused and starved to death. Many government officials say they are aware of this issue, but nothing is being done to stop it. You’d think that the government would understand and accept the fact why it’s people are protesting, but instead many of these protests go from peaceful to violent because of police instigation and human rights violations.

violent
A protest gone horribly wrong

We must begin to see the bigger picture, and foresee the results of our actions. People’s worlds are being destroyed, just so we can watch a couple of soccer matches for a month. And after that month, when you and I return to our normal lives, think about the many Brazilians that have been evicted, sold into human trafficking, and have had their rights violated, think about how their lives will never return back to normal. The next time you are watching the FIFA World Cup, be aware of what is going on behind the walls of that stadium.

Restaurant Review: The Bow Valley Ranche

For Father’s Day dinner, my family and I had the pleasure of eating at The Bow Valley Ranche. This upscale restaurant, located in the heart of Fish Creek Park, operates out of a ranch house built in 1896. This antique yet newly refurbished setting adds a modern twist to the classic architecture of the building.

The first thing that struck me when I sat down was the décor and the atmosphere of the dining room. As the restaurant is in actuality a house, there are multiple smaller dining rooms, and we were seated in one of the smaller ones. This created an intimate feeling, although the room was slightly sparsely lit (but then again, it was also dark and raining outside).

Our server was very accommodating and enthusiastic. Being an insatiably curious bunch, we had many questions regarding both the menu and the building itself, all of which she was able to answer. I chose to not drink anything other than water that night and despite that, I was asked if I wanted anything else most of the times our server stopped by the table to see how we were doing. We had absolutely no complaints regarding the service we received.

IMG_8224
My chicken was probably one of the most delicious things I’ve ever tasted…
IMG_8221
Our charcuterie board. I didn’t take this picture before we had started eating. Oops.

Being a quite fancy and upscale restaurant, the menu was exactly that; fancy and upscale. I honestly couldn’t tell you what some of the menu items were, as I wasn’t entirely sure what they were either. I’ll chock that one up to youth and inexperience in fine cuisine on my part. All or most of their ingredients are also locally sourced, which is a really nice touch. We started with the charcuterie board, which features multiple local meats, cheeses, veggies and spreads, which was different than anything I’ve ever had, but undoubtedly very good. I decided to stay on the safe side and ordered stuffed chicken breast as my main entrée. I cannot even describe how tender and juicy it was. In fact, until then, I didn’t know that it was possible for chicken to even BE that succulent. As for my parents, they had elk osso bucco and arctic char, respectively, and enjoyed it down to the last morsel.

Finally, we had dessert, and oh, what an experience that was! After intense internal debate, I decided on the apple & fig pudding, my mother had death by chocolate and my father, the cheese plate. I think my insides melted just a little upon tasting the first bite of my dessert. My mother claims to have thoroughly savoured her dessert and as for my father, well, let’s just say that the cheese plate was so big that we had fancy cheese in the house for about three days afterwards.

IMG_8228
Apple and Fig Pudding: Amazing.

Overall, My experience at the Bow Valley Ranche was definitely a positive one. This is dining at what I say is pretty near its finest. The only stumbling block that I observed was the price. However, I am a broke teenager and I have a much different perception of price than the patrons who would normally be dining and paying for their own meal. Price tag aside, I heartily give this restaurant my fondest recommendations to anyone who wishes to eat a meal in a beautiful setting with wonderful service and food.

What YAA loves about summer: The Exploring Edition

With this past Saturday marking the beginning of summer, Youth Are Awesome would like to present you with some of the top things we enjoy the most about this season. The bloggers apart of this series will each present their favourite thing about summer. If you have not already checked out some of the blogs in this series, feel free to peruse our website for more.

Personally, what I enjoy the most about summer is exploring. I love to just delve into the city and stroll the streets of downtown or a random neighbourhood, like Kensington, where I know there will be something exciting to discover. Everyone says how boring Calgary is. But if you look just open yourself up to the possibilities of what Calgary has to offer, you may just be surprised.

This past Friday, I took the liberty of taking the train downtown and took some photos of what I saw that day. Exploring the city is one of the best things about summer. You grow to see the beauty in things that you would have never expected to accept.

I loved the reflective surface of these buildings.

Fashion trends you should follow

Am I the only one that thinks fashion is getting boring? Florals in spring, floppy hats in the summer, fur coats in winter. We get it! I think we need to change up some of these trends. So today, I have compiled five fashion trends I think all of you should follow.

1) The body sock

  thing

The body sock is a beautiful piece of clothing for anyone who wants to show off their curves. It keeps you warm during those long winter nights. And for those days when you’re feeling very antisocial, just wear the body sock so you don’t have to communicate with others. It also adds to the feel of mystery and keeps people guessing.  The body sock is great for all four seasons, it is very trendy.

2) The Slanket

slanket

It’s time for Chanel to move over, the slanket is coming through. The slanket is a blanket with sleeves! If that doesn’t make you want to wear it, I don’t know what will. The slanket is a really great alternative for big fat winter coats. And the great thing about the slanket is, while you wear it, you can practically go to sleep anywhere! At school, in the office, on the train, anywhere! The slanket is a great mix between night wear and couture. The amazing thing is, the slanket comes in many different colours and designs. You can wear the blue one at your brother’s wedding, the green one at prom, they are very versatile. The slanket needs to become a more popular trend.

3)  The Tent Dress

tentdress

The tent dress is high-fashion at it’s finest. This dress is an upcoming trend for the spring of 2015. It is amazing for camping trips. The tent dress makes it possible to wear what you sleep in, literally! It also makes your hips look great, and it makes you look taller than you actually are. Anyone that is short and loves camping should defiantly buy this dress.

4) The Shoeless Heels

weird heels

For all you ladies out there, the shoeless heel is a great alternative to flip flops.  The shoeless heel is great for the summer time, it keeps your feet cool and it makes you look great. After a while, you might begin to bleed. But the blood will add to the great effect of the shoes, it will make you look like a stronger woman. I definitely see the shoeless heels becoming a popular trend.

5) Picnic Pants

picnicpants

Picnic pants are God’s gift to humans. No need for a picnic table, you and your friends can enjoy a picnic on your pants. If you don’t have a pair of these pants, go out and buy them now! They are great for the warmer seasons. And let me tell you, there is soon to be a picnic pants craze.

These are the top five trends I think you should follow. I feel all theses trends are just generally great, and I think you guys need to go out and buy these fashionable items as soon as possible. When people see you wearing these items, you’ll be the coolest person on the block.

Recap of Turnt Up Block Party!

Turnt Up Block Party

The Turnt Up Block Party was a vibrant celebration held at Shaw Millennium Park, filled with youth speakers, entertainment, an all-styles dance competition and much more.

Spark your passion for change! was the motto for the event and that’s what I’ll also try to do here even if you didn’t go.

You can also check out Lauren’s post for her perspective, as she was part of the committee who helped to set up this event: https://youthareawesome.com/youth-centrals-turnt-up-block-party/

Here’s my experience while I was there, along with lots of photos that I took!

Youth Speakers

Speakers
(Left to Right): Sarthak Sinha, Sheliza Kassam, Rebecca Yang  (Not pictured): Nazifa Rahman

Four bright young individuals were invited onstage to share their personal stories and trust me, they were nothing short of inspirational.

Sarthak has dedicated over two years doing graduate-level research in stem cells, and guess what? He’s just a high school student! His love for neurobiology has led him to work side-by-side with other professionals within the field. Furthermore, he volunteers frequently with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, where he has been volunteering with the same patient for over two years. With his research, he hopes to use stem cells as a regenerative agent to treat conditions like MS. Combining his passion with an important cause, Sarthak is truly an amazing individual.

Sheliza told the story of how her 12-year-old birthday disaster had actually changed her life for the better. She had an allergic reaction to the cake, which ruined what was supposed to be a day of celebration. However, it only after this that she realized that she was lucky to have a birthday at all. There were many children out there who have never even experienced a birthday party, so she founded Children’s Birthday Miracles. This non-profit organization gives the less fortunate a chance to have a birthday, complete with cake, food and entertainment. Sheliza shows us how we can take any negative event and turn it into something positive.

Rebecca recalls who inspires her the most: Craig and Marc Kielberger. At the age of 12, these brothers rallied their classmates in response to the death of child activist, Iqbal Misah, who was killed for fighting against child labor. This sparked the creation of Free the Children, an organization that helps nations worldwide break the cycle of poverty. After hearing their stories, Rebecca was inspired to give back to her community by being a part of her school’s Right to Learn Club, which raised money to provide education to students in India. She is also actively involved with various Youth Central committees. These are just a few things that makes her a globally-minded and compassionate citizen.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make it to Nazifa’s speech, but this wasn’t my first time hearing about her. In a previous article I’ve written, I highlight how she was awarded a Leader of Tomorrow Award for her outstanding contributions. All-Styles Dance Competition

Eight pairs of youth and adults have been invited to battle it out in an all-styles dance competition. The winning team gets a donation to the local charity that they’re representing. In the end, team “WHAAAAT!” brought home the prize for Kids Up Front Calgary. Here’s a look into the intense battling.

Community

This was an event that really brought the community together.

It wouldn’t have been possible without the support of organizations like The Calgary Bridge Foundation, Calgary Economic Development and X92.9 Calgary’s Alternative. Thank you to Carnivals for Kids at Heart, who provided giant bouncy houses that were fit for adults to play in (finally!) Several food trucks were there, including Fiasco Gelato, Spud Mobeel and BentoBurrito.

A number of local agencies set up booths to promote what they do, they included: Calgary Public Library, Distress Centre Calgary, GlobalFest, Heritage Park, Telus Spark, Freed Artist Society, Salvation Army and the Youth Employment Centre.

Last but not least, a big shout out to all the Youth Central volunteers and staff who worked hard to make this event happen. It’s through your commitment that made this such a success and sparking my passion for change.

I’m going to end off with some pictures that show the love and energy at the event.

Huzzah for Hoopla

0

My job (I apologize to all of you who work during the school year–you’re all amazing), far from proving that I’m not lazy as I expected it to, has only vaulted me into a whole new dimension of procrastination and other such symptoms. It seems I’ve begun to use it (despite my extremely short hours) as an excuse for laziness. Thus, instead of studying or volunteering or blogging, once I get home I usually go to sleep or binge on movies from Hoopla (luckily there is a limit of 12 items per month or I would really be worrying about myself).

You see, Hoopla is my new favourite thing. It can be yours as well as long as you have a Calgary Public Library card.

It’s different from the pre-existing e-library, in one major way: there is no limit to how many copies of an item (music, video and audiobooks) are checked out at once. It’s something which usually rules the library system, to the distress of all on long hold waitlists, something eradicated with Hoopla.

So while a bit redundant for those of us with Netflix, it’s perhaps the next best thing for those without.

The only problem is that the selection is understandably mixed and a bit baffling–there are some  bizarre documentaries, a selection of chick flicks, and a number of older films (what I do hear Hoopla is fantastic for is music, credited as “itunes-like”). It can take some digging to find something worth watching, so here are four decent movies to start you off with.

Angel in the House

A foster child unexpectedly shows up on the doorstep of a childless couple.

Anything with precocious young children in I immediately find charming. So despite other shortcomings and perhaps a rather stale plot, I still found it cute.

Cold Comfort Farm

An orphaned aspiring writer comes to live with her eccentric farming family.

I found this film vaguely disconcerting in how it disagreed with my initial impressions. I didn’t really understand the authors intent—although it’s hard to miss the bathetic events and humour—until I read the Wikipedia article. Now I appreciate it quite a bit more. The only thing I suppose is that it does come across as a bit pretentious in the use of modern versus rural lifestyles, but this might be unavoidable considering it’s purpose.

Hey hey it’s Esther Blueburger

Esther Blueburger secretly leaves her restrictive private school in lieu of the freedom and change promised by public school and her friend Sunni.

It follows a fairly standard plotline of the character-development variety, but I find it hard to go wrong with character development. I also liked the way the movie was produced; not only the surreal expressions of conformity in the initial scenes but realism in the unfinished, stilted way scenes suddenly end.

Today’s Special

The story of a chef and his anticlimactic return to his family restaurant.

Oh yes, the romcom. Father-son friction. Mysterious figure who brings some sort of salvation. This one was redeemed in the amount of beautiful food shots. But that taxi-driver.

The story of Mr. Ug and Wind

0

I have always been a fan of Vihart, a YouTuber who explains math in fun ways that are easy to understand. If you are looking for an educational way to pass your time and have a passion and interest in math, subscribing to ViHart and taking a look at her posts is definitely worth the while. In this video, ViHart takes one of math’s most interesting three dimensional shapes and creates a story out of it. Warning: The video will leave you hanging.

**Spoiler alert: In case you are too lazy to figure out the fundamentals of a mobius strip, the answer to the story is really simple: Wind will find her dog again. How? When her world (the mobius trip) is split in half, the one twisted loop becomes another, larger loop. The reason why Wind never saw Mr. Ug was because their world was a see- through mobius strip. If you ran your fingers along one of the edges of a mobius strip, you would end on the other side, no matter where. ViHart used this law/rule to create this story in which the world was flipped whenever Wind tried to get to the “other side” of her world, which only really had one side. **

I really liked this story for its creativity and the geometry/math aspect to it. Some of her projects include silly, but fun,  inventions such as hexaflexagons, insightful and profound thoughts on the ethics of pi and infinity, arranging your mash potatoes so you can achieve the max amount of gravy on your plate, and many more inspiring projects. For more videos from ViHart, check out her channel, or subscribe here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOGeU-1Fig3rrDjhm9Zs_wg

This is a photo of jewelry that incorporates a mobius strip. I think its an interesting concept, because it uses the mobius strip to highlight the meaning enscribed on the inside: "We shall become one." (the mobius strp only has one side but seems to be two).

Dry land swimming exercises

0

Most people don’t have time to go to the pool every time they want to swim or practice their skills. So here are some exercises to help you work on your swimming skills while on dry land.

Start out with some simple jumping jacks. These just warm-up your arms and leg muscles for the rest of the workout. You decide how many you do; it’s your workout, your body you know best and your results.

Here are five more exercises I find helpful (and remember, you decide your sets, reps and sometimes weights):

1. Mountain climber:

You’ll get a workout in your core, shoulders, and hip joint (flutter kick and breast kick)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmwgirgXLYM

Remember to keep your body as straight as possible. Also, the faster you go, the faster your heart rate goes and this can also turn into a cardiovascular exercise.

2. Squat Jumps:

This is for your leg muscles (both your kicks and your kickoff). And to make this more of a swimming exercise, you could even put your arms in a streamline position.

3. Superman:

I’m sure a lot of people have done this before – this is to workout your core muscles mainly. You could also lift your arms and legs up higher if you want a workout there but remember to eel them as straight as possible. Pick your own time frame (Ex. 30 seconds, one minute, etc), or however many times you do it.

4. Dive Bomber/Hindu pushups:

These are really good for swimming because the movement is like coming up from a dive and also the butterfly motion. Your shoulder muscles will also be strengthened.

5. V-sit Flutterkicks:

This takes an exercise and adds a swimming skill to it. You can definitely work on a perfect flutter kick while you’re at it too.

Now for cool-down, do an ankle mobility exercise because you really your ankles while swimming and this will strengthen your ankles so that you don’t get hurt.
