Orteava: Originalitea, Tastea, Dignitea

1

It’s just a little over a month into the new year – how are your I’m-going-to-be-healthy-in-2013 plans holding up? As unfortunate as it is, it’s extremely easy to slouch at home and convinced oneself that food is the true love of one’s life. The treadmill or stairs will be, well, what treadmill and what stairs? Self-denial is surely the first step to healthy living. Luckily, for those of you out there, there is still hope (and, no,  it doesn’t involve the obviously effective infomercial products).

Orteava is a Junior Achievement Company that sells tea. What makes their product so special?

  • Caffeine-free: Though to many people, this may seem like a drawback. What could be better than a cup of freshly brewed coffee on a chaotic Monday morning? However, it is important to keep in mind that  caffeine suppresses the anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) in our body, and hence increases water loss. Better to lay off the caffeine. With Orteava, though, you can still enjoy a nice, warm cup of beverage to combat that blizzard on the way to work/school.
  • Natural & healthy ingredients: Their tea is an infusion of natural herbs, Jasmine, Green Tea, and Earl Grey tea leaves, and brown rice. These healthy ingredients contain the  iron, vitamin B, and various antioxidants you need to stay healthy.
  • No preservatives: This speaks for itself. Instead of buying tea in-store (and having been in-store for who knows how long), why not choose the healthier option that is still non-perishable?
  • Reusable teabags: Their tea bags could be reused for up to five times. Your beverage for the day is taken care of.
  • 165082_447965425257090_1107073587_nQuotes: This is my personal favorite. Each teabag displays a different quote on the paper label. Great for cheering one up on a bad day.
  • Tastes great with honey: If you’re looking to spice things up – or rather, sweeten things up – honey is a great addition to your beverage, minus the bad side effects of refined sugar.
  • 25% profit toward charity: 12 teabags of Orteava tea are sold for $10. 25% of this profit goes toward the Canadian Cancer Society; not only can you prevent health issues of your own, you can help others with your purchase.

The company is selling their product at South Centre Mall on February 16, 2013, so don’t miss out on this great chance to finally complete your new years resolution!

Also, don’t forget to “like” their logo on Facebook to help them win the Junior Achievement Company Logo Award of the year!

Visit their Facebook page, Twitter feed, or webpage for more information.

Inspire originality in Calgary with a tasty solution to unhealthy lifestyles; Orteava leaves you with dignity and confidence.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Movie Review

0

As usual for any Lord of the Rings movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey had fantastic cinematography and musical score. The animation quality was equal to that of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, far from disappointing, same for the score, which effectively portrayed the mood and tone of a scene in the well known and instantly recognizable Middle Earth-esk style.

Happily, Gandalf was once again played by Ian McKellen, so the character was the beloved one we all remember from Lord of the Rings.

Being a relatively nerdy individual, and an avid Lord of the Rings fan, I simply had to go see The Hobbit while it was still in theatres. What I discovered is that when theatre seats are tested for comfort, they are not tested to withstand a 169 minute movie; by the end no amount of shifting could keep me comfortable and I desperately needed to pee. My suggestion is that unless you really, really want to go see this movie, simply wait until it’s on DVD and watch it at home, on your infinitely more comfortable couch, with a remote to pause it whenever you like, and a vastly more plentiful supply of food in your fridge and cabinetsMV5BMTkzMTUwMDAyMl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMDIwMTQ1OA@@._V1_SY317_CR1,0,214,317_ then overpriced theatre popcorn could ever compare to.

Now for those of you intending to go see a movie where an epic battle versus a dragon is occurring I will warn you, this is not the movie you are looking for. Here is a short synopsis: Bilbo is taken on a journey to defeat the dragon Smaug and win back the Dwarves’ rightful home and treasure (located at the Lonely Mountain). They do not meet the dragon, or win back the gold, but simply travel from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, running into a chain of obstacles on their way. No dragon, unless you include the bit at the end where you get to see it’s eye. Now, wasn’t that exciting? Yes, this journey is definitely unexpected, I expected some sort of storyline structure, where there is a climax (also known as the most exciting part), however this is not.

When considered this storyline, or lack hereof, it actually makes sense. This is only the first third of The Hobbit, this is only the introduction, so if we consider a typical storyboard the next movie should (hopefully) be the most exciting one.

Really, unless your dying to see this movie, I’d recommend waiting until all three are out and then sitting around in your pyjamas and have a marathone. Now that is an excellent use of time.

Meaningful Foods-A Glimpse of the Real Chinese Lunar New Year Part II

1

One of the most effective way to learn a culture is through its foods. Chinese Lunar New Year is famous for its hearty and feast-like New Year’s Eve dinner, but what you might not know that the dishes are there not only because of their deliciousness, but also because they symbolize good wishes for the new year. Please note that I am from Southern China, so most of the meaningful foods I can find are from that part. Northern China may have different traditional foods for New Year’s Eve.

Soy-bean sprouts: it looks like a kind of ornamentation called “Ru Yi”, which roughly means “you can get whatever you want”. 豆芽

Chinese Bok-choy: the leaves are not meant to be cut, but cooked and served as whole, which implies “longevity”.

XIANGGUCHAOQINGCAI

Water chestnuts in steamed rice: Water chestnuts in this case represents “treasure” or “fortune”. Looking for water chestnuts in rice is symbolic of “treasure hunting”. The more water chestnuts you can find, the more fortune you will have.

20111106061058409155

Meat balls and eggs: they are both round, and the word “round” can also mean family reunion in Chinese. Eggs are symbolic of new life, so this dish also means the celebration of new year/life.

u104604138_12e40a7776bg214

Egg dumplings: they are dumplings with shells made of eggs. The golden shells make them look like golden “Yuan Bao”, which is an old type of Chinese currency. Therefore, these egg dumplings symbolize good fortune.

shuangxiandanjiao

Dumplings with coins inside: during Chinese New Year, people from Northern China would make huge batches of dumplings, and only some of them has coins in them. It is one of children’s favorite activities–to eat a lot of dumplings to find as many coins as they can. It is said that the more coins you can find, the more money you will make in the new year.

200811211159878_2

Fish: “fish” in Chinese has the same pronunciation as “surplus”. Having a fish dish (or a few of them, for people living near water like me), means “every year you have savings/surplus”.

rBEGE1AjfJcIAAAAAACGhqyvHY4AABWZwLNlVQAAIae562

Chicken and pork leg soup/stew: chicken in Chinese food culture is often associated with phoenix, which symbolizes a good start of a year. Pork legs are pretty big and fat, which wishes for a good end of a year.

xinsrc_49201071409254062180121

Glutinous Rice Balls/Tang Yuan: some areas have them on the 15th day from the first day of Chinese New Year. In my family, we just have them as dessert after dinner. They are round, and the name roughly translates to “round balls in soup”. Same as the meatball dish, “round” in Chinese can also mean “family reunion”.

I have not had a decent New Year’s Eve dinner for four years myself and thinking about all these dishes makes me drool like crazy. I hope you enjoyed this article full of deliciousness and learnt something new about Chinese culture. After all, the Lunar New Year is just an event that brings all the family members together to share good wishes and catch up with each other. The food is not the most important thing (but quite important though), the most important thing is, the entire family is together.

Getting Over Test Anxiety

0

We’ve all been there- that moment before a test when we claw our heads and desperately search our minds for any trace of the knowledge we so efficiently crammed in the night before. Of course, at the same time we also wonder why, oh why, did our brains have to betray us at the moment of truth?

Test anxiety can really effect how well we perform. No matter how much you study, sometimes anxiety wins over and you end up in a dreaded mess. Luckily, there are many ways to help calm down before taking a test:

1. Get lots of sleep: I know this is pretty cliche and sometimes highly impossible, but I find that making sure I rest properly provides great benefits on test day- especially if a test is last period and I have already struggled through a long day. Obviously, keeping the brain alert and awake is very important when taking a test (or so I’ve heard).

2. Eat Breakfast: Again, another pretty cliche rule to follow. However, it really makes a difference when you have breakfast before taking a test. Your brain needs fuel to function, and skipping breakfast won’t help. If you’re looking for something to calm your nerves, go for a banana.

URGH.
URGH.

3. Know What to Expect: Talk to your teacher, your friends, your classmates. Make sure you know what will be on the test. Talking to the teacher helps me a ton- many teachers will actually give you information untold to the class. Personally, for some odd reason, simply asking teachers about tests helps me feel better prepared and more reassured.

4. Cram- With Technique: Sounds a bit odd, I know. But cramming the right way (not sure what this really means) can help. For example, in subjects where memorization is all there is to it, cramming the night before can help all the information stay in. However, for subjects where you actually have to understand the material (math), try not to cram- this just causes more stress and frustration, especially when you just aren’t capable of understanding the work in such a short span of time (again, math). A little disclaimer: this works great for me, but probably isn’t for everyone.

5. Have Confidence: This is hands down the most important thing to have when taking a test. If you’ve studied and know the material, but still have doubts about the test, understand that it’s all in your head. It’s surprising how effective a simple confident reassurance can boost your mark- contrary, it’s also surprising how self doubt can substantially lower your performance. Everything we do can either fail or succeed based not on the influence of others, but on the way we think and treat ourselves. Athletes have sport psychologists to help them train themselves to have confidence. It’s not that they aren’t capable or that they aren’t qualified enough to compete- it’s that their way of thinking can either make or break their performance. The same thing goes when taking a test-if you know the course and the material, then you know the test. Have confidence- tell yourself you can do it; tell yourself you will. Change the way you view a test; they aren’t all that different from the homework and assignments you do. It’s all in your head.

Canada Has Not a Penny to Its Name

0

CanadianPennyWhy has Canada been rendered penniless?  February 4th marked the withdrawal of the one cent coin from circulation.  Why is our beloved copper currency disappearing?  The fact that its cost of production is far greater than it’s monetary value and that inevitable inflation has left the penny virtually unusable in small quantities are largely contributing factors.  Sadly, penny candies are quite rare.  Although pennies will no longer be distributed to financial institutions and transactions will be rounded, pennies are still being accepted as viable currency.  The history of the penny will live on through a mural consisting of almost 16,000 of the copper coloured coin in Canada’s Currency Musuem.

The Canadian penny has gone through quite the evolution up unitil its recent demise.  The first penny was made by Canada’s Royal Mint in 1908 out of 95.5% copper. The composition was changed to 98.4% zinc (with copper plating) in 1997 and was changed to steel by 2000.  The penny’s name most likely originated from the Old English word penig/penning and cent from the Latin word centum, or one-hundreth.

Finally, here is a list of my favourite penny idioms to commemerate all its years of faithful service:

  • Penny for your thoughts
  • A penny saved is a penny earned
  • Penny-wise, pound-foolish
  • Costing a pretty penny
  • Bad pennies always turn up
  • Without two penneis to rub together
  • In for a penny, in for a pound

Time Management

0

We all get stressed but is it because there aren’t enough hours on the clock or because we don’t know how to manage our daily activities. Here are four easy steps to make your life easier and help you complete all your daily activities and squeeze a little bit of time in for yourself! time

1. Make a list of all the things you must do in a day! Yes sleeping, eating and hygiene do count!

2.Make a list of things you want to do in a day.

3. Make a chart and make sure all your activities add up to exactly 24 hours.

4. Follow your plan.

Here are some quick and easy tips that will help you succeed:

1. Do not multi-task…because technically your full attention is not given in either place.

2. Make sure your priorities are in check! Playing video games over sleep is WRONG!

3. When in loss of concentration and hope…close your eyes and count to ten..just joking 😛 To be honest all I do is think of all the awful consequences that will affect me if I do not get the job done.

4. Remember it is not the end of the world if you do not meet all your wants you will have plenty of time in the upcoming day.

5. The MUSTS are different.. do not procrastinate. Your life can be deeply affected if you do not meet important needs in life.

6. Be positive…being pessimistic will only make your life more miserable.

7. ALWAYS have a goal in mind, it will push you to doing the best you can!

8. Plan RELAXATION time for yourself, your body needs a break! Being on the constant go can really drain the energy out of your body!

9. Don’t criticize yourself, only positive thoughts should enter your body.

10. Smile life is not that bad! Like they say “Struggle is the meaning of life” !

Why Stress? A Glimpse of the Real Chinese Lunar New Year Part I

2

http://sc.jb51.net/uploads/allimg/130108/2-13010PZ005V2.jpg

The Chinese Lunar New Year is just around the corner. In less than two weeks, there will be a series of traditional celebration events happening in China and less remotely, Chinatown. Chinese culture has became pretty big over the last few decades in North America, due to the huge number of Chinese immigrants and of course, media influence. As a result, North Americans nowadays actually have a quite clear picture of what Chinese Lunar New Year looks like.

Or they think they do.

Dragon/Lion Dance, fireworks, red pocket, gifts, food…They all seem to be cheerful and festive. However, when I was talking to my friends and cousins in China online last week, a lot of them were very stressed.

I have not been taking part in the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration for 4 years, so I could not remember clearly if there is anything that made me stress out. Therefore, I asked them, “why are you so stressed about it? Isn’t it about winter holiday and lucky money and happiness?” My friends’ replies to that question are more or less the same, “Man I did too poor on my finals. My parents feel like they lose face because of me you know? I am not even allowed to visit other relatives’ places to say happy new year to them. ‘Study hard at home’ is what my Dad said.”

Then the memories started to rush back into my head. So the process is like this: before the New Year’s Eve, the whole family needs to clean up the house for a “fresh start” of the new year. During the meantime, some members are assigned to prepare for the ginormous New Year’s Eve dinner, and snacks like nuts and candies are served on the table all day. After a day of cleaning, kids are changed into new clothes and the whole family eats dinner together. After dinner, the kids would go out and play with firecrackers, while the adults sit, chat, play poker and watch TV. When the kids get back, everyone sits on the sofa and watches TV. Around midnight, the grandparents would give “red pockets” to the kids, to wish them lucky in the new year. Starting on the second day, people will start to visit each other, and that is when the problems come in.

It is the way that people show care for each other in China. In North America, where privacy is valued quite heavily between people, things like this do not usually happen during Christmas. However, in China, the younger generations’ privacy is not respected at all by the elders. For example, my friend is a student and just finished his finals, so when he goes to visit his grandparents, and if all his uncles and aunts are there, my friend is most likely to be questioned about his marks and ranking in school. It can be quite intimidating sometimes as the competition in school is huge, and if one of his cousins did better than him, it would be very embarrassing for some parents. It is not that people do that on purpose to insult their younger relatives, but they do not realize that others’ privacy needs to be respected. Instead, they think ask about relatives’ marks, salaries, marital or dating status, work etc is a way to show that they care. However, it is the “care” that puts a lot of pressure on the people they care about, and makes Lunar New Year not such a pleasant experience as it should be.

Despite all the stress people have to deal with during Chinese Lunar New Year, there are still a lot of neat things to look forward to. In Part II, there will be some interesting cultural details/facts about the Lunar New Year, so stay tuned!=)

Blind Date With a Book

0

Would you want to go on a blind date with a book? The Calgary Public Library seems to think so.  This poster says it all:

“Who will your ‘book soul mate’ be?  A thriller, a biography, perhaps a romance?  Don’t worry if it doesn’t work out, simply return your date with no strings attached and no hard feelings”

photo-10

For February and Valentine’s Day, several of the Calgary’s Public Libraries set up “blind date with a book”.  I think this is a cute and fun way for people to try out a new genre and there is indeed a possibility that they will fall in love!

I snapped this photo at Fish Creek Library, where there is a shelf of books all decked out and ready to find dates:

Paperman – Classic Love Story

0

With the Valentine’s Day hype and all, this mini film is the quickest way to get into the the spirit.  Show it to your significant other to get into cupids good books. Telling the tale of a New York city young man stuck in a mundane office job, his life changes forever when a pretty young lady catches his eye  they wait together for a train.  The audience is taken on a six and a half minute journey of his adventure to find the future love-of-his-life filled with plenty of paper airplanes (that was not a typo!). Paperman will leave even the less sentimental of us, a little teary-eyed.

Produced by the infamous Walt Disney Animated Studios, this mini film was featured in theatres with the movie Wreck it Ralph.  This charming video has a vintage feel to it, playing nearly all in back & white.  In an actions-speak-louder-than-words kind of way, I didn’t even notice that there was no character voice or dialogue until the end; the story comes across brilliantly!

Under the direction of John Kahrs, a first time director this Oscar-Nominated short has been created using a revolutionary new technique for cartoon films.  Blending tried-and-true hand drawn animation with CG, results in a quaint video which I hope will stay a classic.

Canadian, Please

0

With the recent Idle No More protests on Bill C-45 for Aboriginal rights and environmental protection (to name a few), racism is starting to show in Canadians as well. I was researching the Bill for a school government project as part of the grade 9 curriculum, and a look at the “Comments” section below the majority of news articles was quite surprising. Some comments contained a lot of racism towards Aboriginal people, and it was pretty sad because for the longest time I have been proud of Canada’s multicultural, non-racist environment.

In grade 7 humanities, our teacher showed us this video, “Canadian Please” by YouTuber gunnarolla. I think it’s brilliant – a quirky song that ties back into Canadian peoples’ fundamental values. I want to bring back this awesome video as a way to say, let’s remember to work against racism – both in the current Bill C-45 issue, and in other issues.

Step 3: Live multiculturally.

Enjoy!

An alternative Valentine’s Day: random acts of kindness!

3
Show your love for the world with random acts of kindness for Valentine’s Day!!!

This Valentine’s Day, spread your love with random acts of kindness (RAK for short)! So often, we get caught up in our own lives and forget that on this day we need to recognize our love of others and of the world, rather than just our personal want for love.

Lately, I’ve been doing some random acts of kindness, and I plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day and the long weekend by doing tons of RAK! I invite you to join in and help make our community amazingly awesome 🙂 In fact, February 17th is “Random Acts of Kindness Day”, so I really encourage you to embrace the opportunity! Here are some ideas:

  • Tape quarters to the vending machine! And don’t forget to leave a little note with a positive message 🙂
  • Create happiness posters and tape them around your school, including in the washroom/locker room.

IMAG0073

  • Bring a treat for your teacher! Try something quirky and meaningful like:Smore Gift
  • Write positive messages like these on sticky notes and put them inside your favourite books in the library! You could even stick a coin with the note for an even grander surprise 🙂

IMAG0075

  • Write some inspirational quotes on colourful paper, tape to a pack of smarties or small chocolate bar, and give out to anyone who you think needs some help smiling 🙂

IMAG0077

  • In today’s technological world, us teenagers spend a lot of time on social media and blogs. Why not put this to use with RAK and leave some positive, happy, inspirational comments on people’s blogs/statuses/etc.!?!?!
  • You’ve probably seen posters before that have those little rip off things at the bottom, usually phone numbers with an advertisement. Do this the RAK way:
  • Hold the door open in a busy place for at least 5 minutes.
  • Since it’s a long weekend (for most of us at least), make use of your days at home and do something a bit bigger, like taking  treats to the nearest fire department or police station! Another idea would be to make little baggies of hershey kisses, or any chocolate really, and leave them for people who help you throughout the day: store clerks, librarians, mailmen/women, servers, people at the bank, etc.
  • The opportunities are endless! Comment with your ideas and check out places like Pinterest and Tumblr for even more ideas 🙂

“Take what you need” image from: http://aubrey-jo.blogspot.ca/2011/12/take-hope.html

Well! A million-gazillion smiley faces 🙂 later, I hope you’re inspired to go and make a difference by adding joy and love to other people’s lives!

How will you celebrate Valentine’s Day? What are your RAK ideas???

How to wear a man’s shirt as a dress

0

The other day I had plans to attend my friend’s birthday party but had absolutely no time to go home or had any change of clothes with me. Instead of going in yoga pants and a t-shirt, I recalled a Youtube video about how to wear a cute dress from a man’s dress shirt. Luckily for me, I had plenty of guy friends who lived in Residence at the University of Calgary. So instead of freaking out, I tried out a few different dress styles. The following are four different styles:

oddities 063
Collar: front; sleeves: front
Collar: front; sleeves: back
Collar: front; sleeves: back
Collar: back; sleeves: front
Collar: back; sleeves: front
Collar: front; sleeves: back
Collar: front; sleeves: back

Which styles do you like? I found these styles on this video:

[youtube 2JwdZC31nQU]

However, I stumbled upon to more videos that have additional styles which are really cute:

[youtube HUrbVW7efGE]

[youtube 8VtyIuzk_u0]

So don’t be afraid to flaunt a man’s t-shirt! I asked my friends and they didn’t even recognize that it was a man’s shirt. So if you’re in a fashion slump and have a guy’s shirt with you; try these styles!

Calgary Opera celebrates Giuseppe Verdi’s 200th Anniversary with the rousing Falstaff!

This brilliant and amazing opera is brought to life by the great composer Giuseppe Verdi, with Calgary Opera celebrating his 200th anniversary this season. Falstaff is a hilarious and hearty adventure that is acclaimed to be one of Verdi’s greatest music achievements. It’s a masterpiece that would be Verdi’s last and only successful comedy. Verdi had become a celebrated symbol of Italian nationalism and 19th century Italian opera, though preferring to humbly view himself as a man of the countryside.

The opera opens with Sir John Falstaff, the enormous and narcissistic rascal of Windsor in the Garter Inn with his dimwitted and comedic servants, Bardolfo and Pistola. Wishing to increase his fortunes, Falstaff looks towards courting the wealthy nobles Alice Ford and Meg Page. He decides to better his luck by writing love letters to both, convinced his enormous girth and stylish charm would enchant either to be his lady. Of course, this foolish folly is quickly uncovered by the two matrons and a slew of hilarious revenge attempts and soon, Falstaff  comes to realize how much trouble he is getting himself into.

Highlights of opera included: the rich dialogue translated from Italian, the amazing costume design and impressive set. Falstaff, with a “paunch” and being a “mountain of lard,” absolutely adores himself while oblivious to the insults and remarks made by the Women of Windsor. At one moment, Falstaff wears baggy brown pants and a slouching hat with feathers attached, a sight to behold while stepping out to court Alice. The women of Windsor, prim and proper, with slim fitted ballroom dresses pulls out a rather nasty bag of tricks on Falstaff for his deception, with one of the ending scenes in Falstaff with women adorned in precious and delicate light blue ballet dress, monsters and masks of the most terrifying shapes are brought out onto sticks and the backdrop is transformed into a dark and eerie forest by wonderful lighted projections  of trees and rocks.

The performers blew away the audience with their strong and proud voices, their exaggerated body gestures, working along a wonderfully versatile set. The “pit” is a wonderful place to peer down into, an open space that juts under the stage and contains the wonderful musicians of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, to add a ear pleasing delight to the evening of live music, singing and acting.

One of my favourite moments in the opera was the rendition of poor Falstaff hiding in the filthy laundry basket, gasping for air, his head bobbing up and down and then, without regard or pittance, is thrown into the muck of the ditch below. What an experience that would have been! Falstaff servants stole a bit of the spotlight, comedic characters that have brilliant comedic timing and expressions. I saw a full moon that evening.

Thanks goes to Kids Up Front, an organization dedicated to giving the opportunity to youth to engage with the vibrant culture of Calgary, to see brilliant, heart-stopping performances by amazing performers that they would not be able to otherwise.

Sometimes you just need a good quote to turn a bad day into a good one!

Here are some of my favourites:
