I wish I could say that my name is Cordelia or that I can recite "The Highwayman" from memory or even that I live on Prince Edward Island. While these facts are unfortunately untrue, you can probably tell by now that I am a die-hard Anne of Green Gables fan! My name is Sarena Dharshi and I can say that one of my favourite poems is Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott" and I have indeed visited Charlottetown, P.E.I. Some other fun facts about me: I attend Western Canada High School, my favourite colour is turquoise and I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I love writing and performing spoken word poetry and I am also a blogger for The Huffington Post.
You know what’s better than surfing the online web (and it’s hard to believe that something out there is)? For a shutterbug like me, it’s catching a picture of a real, live, spider web. They’re rather elusive phenomenons and aren’t keen on being caught on film.
Moraine Lake is a gorgeous, turquoise coloured lake near Lake Louise. It’s part of Banff National park and is glacially fed; the rock flour deposits giving its unique hue. Fun fact: it was once featured on the back of the Canadian $20 bill. I spent a lovely Sunday afternoon there during the Heritage day long…
This year I was lucky enough to experience the Calgary Stampede for each of the 10 days. How you ask? I was working there in the Lammle’s Western Wear Store and it was a fantastic experience. Each day I took some pictures of what I found interesting at the grounds. You couldn’t even tell what…
Every year that I’ve been to the Calgary Stampede, the President’s Choice Superdogs Show remains my absolute favourite. Being a big canine fan, there is nothing else I’d rather be doing than spend forty-five minutes watching my furry friends, run, jump, skip rope, weave and perform for the audience to their hearts’ content. It’s clear…
This photo is anything but conventional. Yes that is a robin, yes he is indeed sitting on a horse and yes, I took this picture. The title of this blog post however, seems not at all fitting for the scene and may have raised some eyebrows so let me clear a few things up. This…
While some people may be boy-crazy or food-crazy or book-crazy, we all know I’m quote-crazy. So here’s a list of some inspirational quotes from my two favourite spoken word poets Sarah Kay and Shane Koyczan. “Our lives will only ever always continue to be a balancing act, that has less to do with pain and more…
I’m here in the middle of exam break dreaming of summer vacation so I decided to pacify myself by looking over some of the photos I took on my trip to Toronto last August. Here are some famous Toronto landmarks and some neat things that caught my eye around the city.
One of my earliest memories as a child was going to Prince’s Island Park in Calgary every June to walk The World Partnership Walk. Back then, I looked forward to it because we made it a family affair. I would head down to the park with my family and it seemed that in exchange for…
Here is a picture I snapped of a solitary zebra at the zoo while I was attending the YODA (Youth of Distinction Awards) ceremony earlier that day!
If you haven’t heard of the Green brothers, let me give you a quick run down. John Green, (whose quotes I have featured in this article), has to be one of my favourite writers. If you’ve ever heard someone exclaim “Have you read TFIOS?!”, they are referring, not to some extra-terrestrial piece of literary material,…
A couple weeks ago, I was able to catch a glimpse of one of the last penguin walks of the season. The King penguins at the zoo actually come out and “march” for spectators if they are feeling up to it: the temperature must be perfect, not too hot and not too cold. If you…
Since its inception in January 2013, Facebook page Calgary Compliments has taken our city by storm. So what exactly is the purpose to a page like this? Unlike similar “confessions” pages which have been popping all over the interwebs, this compliments page is a civic outreach initiative to help Calgarians bond. Inspired by the University of Calgary…
A while back, I had experienced the incredible food at Africana eatery. Having served Calgarians for over three years, this East Indian/East African Fusion satisfied even my picky tastes, despite the fact that I usually refrain from trying spicy Indian cuisines due to my overly sensitive palate. In fact, Africana puts a new twist on…
I caught this lonely icicle just as the snow was melting one warm March weekend. Hopefully the groundhog was wrong and Spring-like weather will arrive in a jiffy!
Caution: Plot Details Revealed! “There is a way to be good again” and so begins Theatre Calgary’s adaptation of The Kite Runner. A couple years ago, I had read Khaled Hosseini’s masterpiece and was overjoyed to be given a chance to see Playwright Matthew Spangler’s adaptation. Having been a while since I had read the…
