Our Materialistic Society

0

We are exposed to so much advertising everyday. Our society is continuously being consumed in a vast environment of the constant pursue to spend. Everywhere we go, we see ads for the latest phone, the latest shoe, the latest food. As a society, the push for us to spend our money on things we don’t need, things we already have, leads us into this blind spiral of materialism. Does money really buy happiness? To an extent, yes- we need money to survive and sustain ourselves, but there is a point where our happiness should (and can) no longer be maintained by materialistic goods.

I’ll admit that I was very naive about the world of spending- that is, until I discovered the world of YouTube beauty gurus. Videos of hauls and collections blew my mind in that they were so overwhelmingly excessive. Why, I wondered, did anyone really need the exact same shirt in three different shades of blue? Why would someone go and spend hundreds of dollars on a bag only for the sake of owning a designer bag? Small makeup and clothing collections turned out to be mini stores and hauls were basically 15 minutes of showing piles and piles of unneeded goods. Was this all necessary? Does materialistic goods really make someone happier?

shopping-bags

Sometimes we become so absorbed in buying and owning everything we set our eyes on that we need to take a step back and consider what really makes us happy. Numerous times I have been in the situation where I really want something that is not essential. When I finally do get it, I always end up finding it not as great as expected. Was I any happier after getting what I wanted? Maybe for a minute, but I’ve gotten to understand that immersing myself in materialistic goods does no good for my happiness in the long run. Simply owning a shirt I see in a window or magazine does nothing for how I feel about myself- my happiness wears off extremely quickly and a shirt won’t magically provide any solutions to life  long joy. In actuality, I always end up feeling guilty when I spend money on unneeded things- unless guilt will one day make me flood with happy emotion, this is another reason why consumption does not help me stay positive.

Materialism can be dangerously addictive- the more we tell ourselves we need something, the more we want it. It starts off with simple desire- by the time we get what we want, there will always be something more we wish for. It is a never-ending cycle of desire and consumption that will never leave us satisfied. Perhaps happiness should be looked at beyond the stage of consuming as much as possible. Maybe we should be refocusing ourselves on the things we already have, not on the things we don’t. It’s the little things that account for our happiness- our goals, our knowledge, our personal stories. We can’t rely on artificial goods to support our happiness- for that, we need to realize the more important things in life, the things beyond what money can buy. As Douglas Horton said, “Materialism is the only form of distraction from true bliss.”

The Golden Age: Marilyn Manson’s Performance Captivates Calgarian Crowd

0

Anyone familiar with Marilyn Manson will know that he is well known for his provocative and theatrical nature. Needless to say, his performance at the Stampede Corral on February 8th surpassed what I could imagine it would be. During one point in the show Manson appeared on stage dressed as the pope, hat and all, and sprayed the audience with smoke from a hose. For every song Manson had a different outfit, running back-stage in between songs to change. The pope hat was definitely the best part of his outfits.

Not only were the clothes entertaining, but the

special effects during the show fit the mood of each song perfectly, whether the effect was smoke, lights or glitter falling from the ceiling. Manson preformed a variety of songs, old and new, including such classics as Personal Jesus, Mobscene, The Dope Show, The Beautiful People and Antichrist Superstar.

The biggest disappointment, for me, was that he didn’t play The Golden Age of Grotesque, my favourite Marilyn Manson song. It easily could have been included, Manson only played for about an hour and a half in total. The opening band, The Butcher Babies, were terrible. The band featured two girls screeching into microphones and seizuring around on the stage, “dancing” I think they consider it. Thankfully, they were only the opening act. The venue was alright; security was a pain to get through, the seats were hard and terrible, and the food was similar to cafeteria food, except there was hardly any selection. The overall sound quality wasn’t too bad (minus The Butcher Babies).

Yet, I don’t regret going. I’m happy I went. Despite the unfortunate venue, horrifying opening band, and short performance by Manson, the performance he gave was excellent, definitely worth seeing. Although he is often dubbed an “aging shock-rocker” he has ten times more attitude and character then most of the sixteen year olds I know, a musician whose dedication and guts we can all admire.

10 Amazing Fantastical Landscapes

0

So, today I want to share with all you lovely folk one of my most treasured favorite pastimes — staring at fantastical art and architecture. Oh, and by the way, by “fantastical”, I don’t mean “really freakin’ awesome” (which, to be fair, most of these paintings are), but rather “magical” or “fantasy-inspired”. Like this:

1.870e2d9401fa75f767279e0405382a45

Pretty cool, huh? Just the sheer amount of attention to detail is fun enough to admire. But I think the best aspect of these images is how easily they serve as jumping pads for the imagination. You’ve just been presented with a small snapshot of a beautiful and fantastical world, now it’s up to you to flesh this world out. Two more breathtaking images to prove my point.

2.

I’ve heard before that the most fundamental purpose of all art is to provoke some sort of emotion. Luckily, it looks like some of the best fantastical landscapes can accomplish just that. No longer is the artist restrained by the limits of reality. Here’s a piece that, through masterful use of color and space, radiates a lonely and wistful kind of feeling.

4. sample-cb8923a95735e7c4ec4ec1cfa5a294eb

And here’s one that’s just really  ominous. (Here’s the artist.)

5.

(Incidentally, it seems like a lot of these artists have jobs working for video game companies. Is the art in games all this great because if so, I may have to get into gaming.)

But hey, some of these pieces are also just crazy imaginative. Have two of my favorites.

6.

So, it looks like the large majority of the images that I’m posting seem to be either folksy, whimsical fairytale landscapes or more traditionally medieval-influenced ones (also there was the cool steampunk one at the beginning, but that one kind of sits in a class of it’s own). But some of the most profound pieces seem to be inspired by more exotic locales.

8.

tumblr_m9tpfycQcm1rsmi4qo1_1280

Oh and by the way, remember how I was talking about the sheer attention to detail some of these works show? Yeah, I really wasn’t kidding about that. Some of this stuff looks like it could be from a photograph.

9.

So, um. I guess we’ll conclude with a penguin because penguins are pretty cool.

10.

On a final note, if this is something that is at all interesting to you, then I quite highly recommend that you watch Makoto Shinkai’s The Place Promised in Our Early Days right now (along with every other film the man has created). Because seriously, the movie is basically a good hour and a half of breathtaking imagery that just teeters on the edge of the fantastical before crossing it completely.

Awesome books not enough people know about

Escaping to another world, making friends with fictional characters, and learning how to face life’s obstacles are all key aspects that make us love literature. However, many of us are trapped in a small bubble of well-known books, but really, there are sooooooo many great books out there, so look beyond the common trends! Before I get to my list, I’ll make something clear: the Hunger Games, The Fault in our Stars, Divergent, Uglies, Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, and other popular books are great and many are truly works of art! But there are so many other masterpieces out there, so explore my list and expand your horizons!

*click the titles and they’ll lead you to the book’s page on goodreads*

  1. Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder – I’m actually really surprised this novel isn’t popular, as it is such a fantastically written book with such a fantastic plot, and it really fits the common trends in YA books. The world created is stellar, and the characters really bring to life the society!
  2. Ten Miles Past Normal by Frances O’Roark Dowell – Going into this book, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but in the end, it was a very rewarding read. It was a light, cute story, but was still very intriguing and had strong literary elements. And… I was actually satisfied by the ending! Yay! Not a depressing ending like so many books! (*cough*cough*Mockingjay*cough*)
  3. A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass – If you read the summary for this one, it may not sound as interesting as other books, but if you actually read the book, it is unbelievable how supernatural and yet realistic her life is. I say this because her condition seems so unreal and unearthly, yet her character and emotions are so relatable!  One of my favourite favourites. 🙂
  4. The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester – For high school peeps, you may not be so interested in this one, as it is a bit more juvenile. However, I’m still recommending it because it blew me away! The depth of imagination, creativity, and supernatural elements is superb and I was really tied in, especially because of an insane, mind-blowing plot twist!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Radiance by Alyson Noel – First of all, I’ll admit that I wasn’t absolutely completely blown away by the first book, but there are 3 more in the series. I have yet to read them, but my friends who have read them LOVED. What I did like about the first book was how much it opened my imagination and let my mind feel free. 🙂
  6. Blood Red Road by Moira Young – My friends have gone on and on about how great this book is and how I have to read it, and finally I have began! I’m only a couple pages in, but even already, the plot and setting is really intense and intriguing. There is a sequel, but my buddies say its a bit of a let down.
  7. Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder – I guess this is cheating, as I haven’t read this one yet. But… I had to put this on the list, as my reading-crazy friends who have read it thought it was absolutely amazing, and have given it a spot up with their overall favourites!

This list is just a start! Check out your local library, bookstore, and get an account on goodreads.com to explore different books!

Musicians care for kids!!

0

Much thanks to the Kids Up Front for giving me tickets to the Musicians Care for Kids. An annual event where musicians team up to raise funds for the Boys & Girls Club. The host for the night is the renowned Calgarian artist, Russell Broom, a JUNO winner for songwriter of the year.  The musicians playing are: Gordie Johnson, the front man for the reggae-rock band Big Sugar; Romi Mayes, five time WCMA winner; David Gogo, notorious blues musician and multiple Maple Blues Award winner; Reuben Bullock, Calgarian folk artist and 2012 CFMA nominee; Del Barber, two time WCMA winner and Andrea House, Albertan singer/songwriter, taking turns sharing their stories, motivations and inspirations behind some of their finest songs. (Boys & Girls Club)

MusiciansCareForKids

It was a lot of fun and a musically enriching evening to see all these wonderful musicians combine and come up with good music. I liked how there was something for everyone, as all of the musicians are different: Del Barber is a folk artist and Romi Mayes is a country musician.

Horrible Conversation Killers

0

24059260 Have you ever met a person who only talks about them self…or a person who will barely share his/her input so you feel like you are doing all the talking?! CONVO KILLERS 🙁

Have you ever had a conversation that went like this:

Bob: Hey

John: Hey

Bob: What’s up?

John: Not much

Ohhh those get me so mad!! They end the conversation in less than thirty seconds! Like come on John have the courtesy to ask Bob “what’s up” with him!
Alright alright I know the phrase “what’s up” is destined to kill a convo but it also saves you from awkwardness…I think…

Or have you ever had a conversation that went like this:

Bob: Hey, What’s up John?

John: Oh not much, although I just won eight Grammy awards, got my entrance to Harvard, bought myself a new dog, received my pay check, watched tv, which I was on, met Ian Somerhalder..you know the regular week..

Bob: um cool?

Well congrats John! But seriously I didn’t need that much information, not only are you bragging but your making me feel bad…now I want to end the conversation, oh and don’t try being modest after you have listed a million amazing achievements you have gotten just in the past week?! Oh gosh self-centered conversation killers!

And then there are the too cool to be talking to you people:

Bob: Heyyy John!!!

John: Oh…hi

Bob: What’s up?

John: Mhmm not much you?

Bob: Not much! 🙂

John: K

6367K-the biggest sword of all time. Either you think the person is mad at you or your just not important for them to be talking to you! Seriously it is a letter not sarcastic phrase! Get it straight people!!

And then there are the smarty pants who when you talk with make you either feel dumb or help you zone out in the first ten seconds:

Bob: Hey

John: Oh good afternoon!

Bob: What’s up?

John: Well since we are under a roof obviously the roof but farther then that the atmosphere, then the boundless sky. Why?

Bob: Umm….that wasn’t what I was asking.

John: Well then I beg your pardon do you mind clarifying, I just made an inference thus I believed…

Bob: (Walks away and shakes his head!)

We all know these people and have lived through hundreds of these convos, let me give a hint of advice. The phrase “what’s up” will kill your conversation! Have back up phrases like:

How are you doing today?

Something that doesn’t get answered in two words but no more than a sentence! For your information, Bob and John aren’t real people just incase you take offence in any way… 😛

Anyways bottom line is know who your talking to really well and don’t use that ugly phrase what’s up. It will either make you feel insecure of get you really annoyed! If you have nothing to say walk away!! It will save you from the agony of a murdered conversation!

Hope this helps you for your future conversations! 😀

Best thing of the week: Harlem Shake

0

This week has been a bummer with school, but I found this thing that’s solved all my problems. 30 seconds of happiness for each video.

So Gangnam Style was a big thing, but it’s so 2012 now. There’s this new dance meme called the Harlem Shake. The song that everyone does it to is by Baauer. The Harlem Shake was popular in the 80s and SMOSH talks about it on their site, but history is boring, so let’s get to the videos.
So how it goes is there’s usually a masked person dancing nonchalantly, and when the beat drops, everything just goes asdshjsfsdkfj;’qs. It’s amusing. Short and sweet. Cuts right to the chase.
It looks like fun, therefore you and your friends should make a video. Just make sure that when you film, everyone around you knows what you’re doing. There’s only so much strangeness the world can handle also…bylaws and stuff.

Youth Central’s Harlem Shake featuring Grant the Cow

Film it with your best girlfriends.

Or film it with your dad. Father-son bonding time.

You can Harlem Shake it virtually.

There’s so much going on…I don’t even.

Could casual Fridays at the office get even more casual?

The army does it. No shame.

Sweetest thing ever

0

I’m going to help celebrate Valentine’s Day by sharing these super adorable stories with you. Enjoy ♥

 Special Delivery

My sweet husband, John, and I were married for 46 years.

Each Valentine’s Day, he’d send me the most beautiful flowers containing a note with five simple words:
“My love for you grows.”

Four children, 46 bouquets and a lifetime of love were his legacy to me when

he passed away two years ago.

On my first Valentine’s Day alone, 10 months after I lost him, I was shocked to receive a gorgeous bouquet addressed to me… from John. Angry and heartbroken, I called the florist to say there had been a mistake. The florist replied, “No, ma’am, it’s not a mistake. Before he passed away, your husband prepaid for many years and asked us to guarantee that you’d continue getting bouquets ever Valentine’s Day.”

With my heart in my throat, I hung up the phone and read the attached card. It said,

My love for you is eternal.”

– Sue Johnston, 68, Houston, TX

“I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live. “

Thanks to my friend who shared this story with me!

Watch this short film by Wong Fu Productions, entitled “The Last“. I love the concept and the execution.

There are so many sweet love stories on the internet – it makes me happy to see that in our generation, called by some “the worst generation” this kind of thing still exists. It’s too cute.

If you know of any others, please share them with me!

Happy Valentines Day <3

Awesome things about Valentine’s Day

0

Last year, I wrote about a blog titled “Annoying things about Valentine’s Day”. This year I decided to counter my disgruntled opinions with something more enlightening (I find it a tad bit ironic how I was in a relationship when I was complaining about V-Day and am now single and am complimenting it).

So February 14 doesn’t have to be as bad as one might think it is. Yes, it’s another day of the year, but it’s also a day to celebrate something you otherwise couldn’t. For example, you could create a yearly V-Day tradition with a friend or two, or do something to celebrate your single status. So here are a few reasons why this day is not as agonizing and pointless as one would think:

Food can be enjoyable

Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to indulge!

That’s right folks; you can actually enjoy a meal or two…if you reserve a spot! But how hard is it to call a few places up to ask them to save a seat, or two…or three? Plus, a lot of restaurants have an online reservation system (click here for a Calgary-based one); a simple form that should take no more than two minutes. Sure, you actually have to decide on a restaurant, but you could always reserve at a couple of different restaurants to ensure that whatever you, your date or your friends decide to go to, is available!

Plus, there can be some good deals and opportunities to try special things on the menu. Even if these menu items are designed for couples, it is still nice to try new things. Come on, don’t be afraid to indulge yourself!

Valentine’s Day can encourage creativity

Home-made gifts can really suck. But they can also be really, really cool. When you really care about someone (whether it be a family, friend or significant other), then you try your hardest to impress them. Even if they don’t ask for it, a quick Google or Pinterest search will give you a lot of awesome ideas. And even if you’re single, you can try to impress a whole crowd with you neat ideas. Bake cookies, encourage random acts of kindness or inspire strangers! The ideas are endless, and Valentine’s Day is a good excuse to let you be creative.

Ignoring society’s norms and having fun

Like I said, V-Day is supposed to be silly and full of love! Who doesn’t like to spread joy and cheer around? Even though there may be a group of bitter students, you can try cheering them up or just avoiding them altogether. No one forced you to talk to them, anyways. So just spend this holiday with some friends and do your own thing; you can make this day your holiday. Name it “Hearts Day” or “Red and Pink Day” or even “The time of the year where cinnamon candy is on sale!”

Fabric roses? How fabulous!
Fabric roses? How fabulous!

Much like how Christmas is different for a variety of people, Valentine’s can be as well.

And those people who make the day even more enjoyable

Bitter or not, seeing happy couples always makes me smile. It’s nice to know that someone is taking advantage of this holiday. Why rain on someone’s parades? No one likes a party pooper, anyways.

So this year, try to do something different. Even though midterms are coming up, taking a break once in a while should not hurt you. Just don’t procrastinate for too long!

The Transformation of Videogames

0

videogame The release of the Wii U marked the first entry in the 8th generation of video gaming, and the 46th year since the inauguration of the world’s first home video game console, the Brown box. Both of them are undoubtedly what we describe as videogames, one of the most cherished pieces of technology in a modern kid’s life, but their differences, both visually and technologically, are endless.url
The brown box was, as suggested from its name, a brown box-like game console, invented and commercialized by Ralph H. Baer. The brown box was capable of connecting with a TV display, a competitive two-player interface, and a collection of 6 basic games, Ping-Pong, tennis, handball, volleyball, chase games and a light-gun game. All of these were of very low quality and complexity. Unlike its distant ancestor, after 46 years of research and technological advancement, the Wii U is of a wonderfully different calibre. The Wii U wields an ocean of capabilities, ranging from touch-screen controllers, to 1080p graphics and the thousands of games it’s capable to run.black1
From the first videogame’s introduction in 1967 to now, much has changed like the hardware, software, cost, theme, resolution, and audience. In 1967, Programmers started with boring, rather monotonous, DOC programming. Today, with our artistic, varying and immersing games on various different themes, consoles and environments, players have a totally different experience. From one-person shooters to intricate labyrinth strategy games, programming shows that big leap.
Other than technology, our audience has changed drastically as well. Today, the average age of a video game player is 29 years old. A fourth of videogame players are over 40 years old. Games which were originally directed to the younger audiences at the inauguration are now becoming more geared towards an older audience as they meet the needs of the majority.
Today’s consoles and games are constantly improving and changing as more innovation leads to more consumerism. The videogame industry, that started with large, stationary consoles moved to mobile gaming and now, even cellphone gaming. As games like Wii Fit (for exercise), Big Brain Academy (for brain improvement), and Sims (advanced life simulation) make their way into our daily lives, people are starting to depend, and cherish videogames to improve their lives. After all, who could live without Mario?

Those Awareness Events in 2013 – International Childhood Cancer Day

0

We often hear about inspirational stories of patients overcoming this sickness through media. This twist in life tears up those who feel it personally. Medically, this word refers to a group of diseases that can be traced to abnormal cell growth. The sudden diagnosis may seem crippling at first for an adult, let alone a child or a teen whose freedom to shape their future becomes limited because of this.

I once wanted to write a short story about a teen cancer victim, but in the end, I didn’t know how I should approach it. Stepping into the shoes of a young person who can be very sick is challenging. Perhaps this is why February 15th is dedicated as “International Childhood Cancer Day” in countries around the world.

This condition is brutal; many succumb to it, but others find sprouting hope gradually. About 10,000 Canadian children suffer from different types of cancer today, most commonly Leukaemia. Each year, approximately 1500 cases spring up.

Made by LaLunatique at DeviantArt.
Made by LaLunatique at DeviantArt.

Already struggling with physical weakness at times, childhood cancer patients have to keep themselves determined emotionally. Others may pity these individuals, but it takes maturity for them not to pity themselves and walk with their head low and mum. While Terry Fox Runs are now a mainstay in most of our schools to showcase willpower, I’m still amazed every time I hear about how the young speakers or their relatives find the courage to keep striving and thriving.

Don’t let gloom take over your thoughts on childhood cancer. Nowadays, childhood cancers have a 75% cure rate compared to less than 10 percent in the 1950s. The Childhood Cancer Canada foundation‘s research states that Leukaemia as a childhood cancer has a 90% cure rate. Keep in mind, this is only if/when health care is available to these patients.

Look at the progress that has been made. Amid blanketing uncertainty, there are pockets of strength in knowing that you can cope with support from others and hope for the best. Read about the Words of Hope campaign from last year here.

Video of The Day: Iran Space Monkey

0

Iran’s first successful attempt at sending an animal 75 miles into space and safely returning to earth. Interestingly, if you look closely enough, you will notice that the photos of the pre-launch monkey does not entirely match the photos of the post-flight monkey (the pre-launch monkey had a mole over its right eye, while the post-flight monkey did not). Iran officials have conceded to using images of two different monkeys in its reports, but affirms that the experiment was not fraudulent, and that a monkey has been successfully launched and returned.

Love Language (a short video)

1

Here’s a short video to shine some light on your Valentine’s day.
