The Kite Runner Flies Into Theatre Calgary

Caution: Plot Details Revealed!

“There is a way to be good again” and so begins Theatre Calgary’s adaptation of The Kite Runner.  A couple years ago, I had read Khaled Hosseini’s masterpiece and was overjoyed to be given a chance to see Playwright Matthew Spangler’s adaptation.  Having been a while since I had read the novel, the details were a little fuzzy in my mind but I remembered the book as being both heart-wrenching and poignant and I was very curious to see if a two hour stage-play could match the depth of emotion I had felt when reading the novel.

The story itself is steeped in Afghanistan’s rich history.  It begins with Hassan, a Hazara boy and his father who live as servants to a wealthy Pashtun man and his young son Amir, in Kabul.  It is important to note that the Pashtuns and Hazaras are two of the largest Afghan ethnic groups and are also the most divided.  The Pashtuns are mainly Sunni Muslims and dominate Afghan culture and politics while the Hazaras, are discriminated against in society and are a Shi’a Muslim minority.  Amir however initially grows up oblivious to this as Hassan and him begin as fast friends and ‘Baba’, Amir’s father, considers Hassan to be just as much a son to him as Amir.  As time goes on, the boys begin to feel the disconnect between their cultures as they are both publicly humiliated by the cruel boys in the neighbourhood for associating with each other.  Kite fighting, is one of the only things that truly keeps them together.  Kite fighting was one of the most fun but competitive sports in Afghan history before the Taliban banned it. Together, Hassan and Amir form a fierce team and go on to participate in the largest kite tournament in about twenty-five years.  It is after this that the boys’ lives change forever as the unspeakable happens.  Soon after, Hassan and his father resign as Baba’s servants and Amir and his father make the long trek together to San Francisco, to escape the mounting political turmoil in Afghanistan.  Amir has lost his devoted friend who had always pledged “for you, a thousand times over”, despite the abuses he receives from Amir and the community.  In his heart, Amir knows that this is the last he will see of Hassan and is wracked with guilt for a secret that blackens his heart from the day of the tournament.

I have deliberately kept the details here very vague, so as not to spoil the book for thoseKiteRunner-Jenna-e1360019219546 of you who have not yet read it.  Long story short, although Amir makes a life for himself in America as a writer and eventually finds a wife, his past continues to haunt him.  One day, with a surprising phone call from a family friend still in Kabul, Amir finds that he must visit the now war-torn Afghanistan, ruled by the Taliban, which resembles nothing of the country he remembered growing up in.  And indeed, there is a way for him to be good again, to right the wrongs of his past and to finally honour Hassan’s loyalty.  Throughout the play, the kite remains a symbol of Hassan’s guilt, his path to redemption, and at the finale, soars as a emblem of new beginnings.

I was definitely blown away on February 23rd at the skill exhibited when transferring this globally renowned work to stage.  During the performance, the older Amir narrates his story from the beginning, in the midst of the action going on with his younger self and the young Hassan.  The transition from the Afghanistan of his childhood, to America and back again to his home country is seamless, accompanied by a beautiful set and gorgeous lighting.  The director even found a way to make the kites “fly” on stage, and this, combined with the presence of a tabla player for a live soundtrack, made the experience all the more culturally rich.  As well, the plot twists in the book were cleverly portrayed on stage as I heard some audience members gasp more than once when key details of the story were revealed.  This heart-breaking and touching play was met with a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

A big “Thank You” goes out to Kids Up Front for generously providing me these tickets and Theatre Calgary for the outstanding performance.

3.14% of Sailors are Pi Rates

Yesterday, March 14, is the designated date of national Pi Day. Why? It was 03/14, or 3-1-4, which are the three most significant digits of pi!

Pi is a common mathematical constant that is equal to the ratio between the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Chances are you’ve used this irrational number at least once in your mathematical ventures, and what better time is there to appreciate all that it’s done for you than now?

Pi-Day-Celebrated-by-Mathematicians-Worldwide

So go buy a pie in honour of pi, or even better, make one yourself. Organize a pi reciting contest! Calculate the surface area of a circle. Appreciate pi 🙂

Happy Belated Pi Day, everyone!

Thanks to Anna for the joke.

A fond farewell to Youth Are Awesome

1

Almost two years ago, in May of 2011, I decided to try something new. I emailed Youth Central to inquire about how one could sign up to blog for Youth Are Awesome. I figured this would be a good opportunity to develop my skills and have some fun doing it. More than 50 blogs later, I can say with utmost confidence that it was an excellent decision.

These past two years with Youth Are Awesome have been an enriching experience. I’ve gotten the chance to meet some awesome people, including the Weasley twins at last year’s Comic & Entertainment Expo, famed comic creator Stan Lee, and Toronto band Polarity. I’ve been given the opportunity to blog for the likes of the Calgary Herald and the Huffington Post on a variety of topics, which was pretty cool. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve been exposed to the awesomeness youth have to offer. YAA has connected me to some people doing some amazing things – my fellow bloggers have traveled the world, created inspirational charitable campaigns, and even founded globally published magazines. My peers have shown me the immense potential that people my age possess and have driven me to follow my passions with greater resolve than ever before.

Looking back at my old posts, I can see how much I’ve grown. It’s funny to see the gradual evolution of my writing style; the growing use of bigger, fancier words, and the development of my personal beliefs. I’ve tried to offer a bit of mix in terms of what I write, but I’ve had a tendency to write about controversial issues. Only now am I realising that writing for YAA actually helped me understand myself a little better. At the risk of sounding like your high school English teacher, writing is somewhat cathartic. Spilling thoughts onto paper (or MS Word now…) helps point you in the direction of your own belief system, something I think is important, and I appreciate the role YAA has played in my journey of self-discovery.

However, all good things come to an end. As I begin to focus on university, case competitions, conferences, and travel, I am noticing that I am no longer able to keep up the commitment that YAA demands (and deserves). Before I go, however, I want thank a few people that have been instrumental in this journey of mine. Jen Atkinson, the editor of YAA when I originally signed up, was a huge help. She gave me innumerable tips about writing, provided heads ups about a TON of opportunities that couldn’t be refused, offered valuable feedback when it was needed, and a proverbial pat on the back when it was deserved.

When Jen left on maternity leave, Michelle Kemball picked up right where Jen left off, offering valuable mentorship and news of opportunities when they arose. Even when commitments weren’t being met, Michelle remained flexible and found ways to solve issues in a constructive manner. YAA is definitely in good hands moving forward.

Lastly, Andrew Phung deserves a huge shout out. The mastermind behind Youth Central during my time with the organisation, Andrew exudes  enthusiasm and passion for youth volunteerism. He treats all of us with the utmost respect and has been unbelievably classy whenever I’ve talked to him. Youth Central is an incredible organisation with a message that I wholly support – if you aren’t involved with it, I strongly recommend fixing this ASAP. For me, however, this is adiós, amigos.

High School Summer Programs at Ivy League Universities

0

It’s that time of the year where people are deciding what to do during the summer. Should you get a job? Or catch up on the latest drama? Often times,

students will lean towards summer school to catch up or get ahead in school.

Many universities will offer programs for high school students. These courses are very beneficial not only because of the higher quality of education, but also because of the social connections you’ll make, the knowledge of what college life is like, and the recognition from universities that you’ve shown interest in them. (Helps with admissions!) Who knows, when living on the campus, you may decide that university is the one for you!

This post will focus on the summer programs offered by the Ivy Leagues. Most universities offer summer programs, but because students often participate in these courses is to become competitive in admissions to selective colleges, we’ll focus on the Ivies.

Programs:

Brown University

Columbia University

Cornell University

Dartmouth University

Harvard University

DIY: Page Corner Bookmarks

2

IMAG0138

Hey! A week or two ago, my friends and I went on a craze of making page-corner bookmarks! They are incredibly cuteeasy to make, and simply slide onto the corner of your page! So, I decided to share this awesome DIY project with you!

What you need:

  • Coloured paper (as many colours as you desire)
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Anything else you want for decorating (feathers, googly eyes, pipe cleaners for antennas, etc.)

What to do:

1. Draw three perfect, equal sized squares connected in an L-shape, and cut out as one piece

IMAG0145

2. Fold both outer squares in half diagonally

IMAG0146

IMAG0147

3. Fold one of the outer squares (now a triangle) over the centre square

IMAG0149

4. Put glue on the top of this now folded over triangle

5. Fold the other outer square (now a triangle) over the one you just folded down

IMAG0151

5. Decorate this flap with whatever you want! Google “page corner bookmarks” to find tons and tons of inspiration!

7. Slide the finished bookmark on the corner of your page and have the best bookmark ever 😛

NOTE: If you plan on making multiple like my friends and I did (the ones pictured above are all mine except for one), I highly suggest making a template so you don’t have to carefully draw the three squares each time!

Hope you enjoyed the post!!!!!

Have a great day 🙂

P.S. Credits of the owl bookmark goes to my amazingly awesome friend 😛

Video of the Day: TED Talk with a Model – Looks aren’t everything

0

This is kind of a test. I want to see how your stereotypical view of something can be changed in a matter of minutes.

Cameron Russell is a Victoria’s Secret model.

I know by just saying that, you’ve probably already developed an image in your mind of who she is. It could be good or bad…but among that, you probably thought: gorgeous, long legs, beautiful body, shampoo commerical-worthy hair, and you’re right, she is all of those things. Even she agrees. On a side note, no one really proclaims themselves as beautiful (socially taboo. You can tell because on Facebook, very few people deliberately call themselves attractive. Quite the opposite actually, they are more inclined to call themselves ugly for self-validation….sorry, ranting again), but once she did, this was kinda my reaction (meme below). And if you didn’t catch the sarcasm in the meme, well it’s definitely there.

Take a look at the video and try judging her based on her appearance, then allow her to talk and see what happens:

Along with that, beforehand, I held a bad misconception of her as a person. Maybe it’s the way the media portrays models, but I don’t often think that they are more capable than the job they’re given — being attractive on camera. In the modelling industry, it’s quite 2-dimensional. Models don’t need to talk or prove anything to us, they just have it made because they’re beautiful. So naturally, since the media/industry never portrays their personality or any need to speak intelligently on a topic, I just think they’re incapable. When Cameron stepped up to the plate at a TEDtalk, I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it would be a gong show. On top of that, I think there’s a certain negative view on beauty because we associate it with an unfair advantage. Cameron even speaks to that seeing as she’s a first hand witness to that. I hope that’s not too offensive, but it was interesting to me when I baffled myself with negative stereotypes of this nice girl. Image is powerful, like she said; it comes with many connotations. And from all the prejudices I just spewed out, you would wish that looks aren’t everything. Wouldn’t you want to prove that you’re more than a pretty face?

After she spoke, my respect for her grew exponentially. She speaks about our perception of beauty and how it dictates too much of everything we look at and I couldn’t have said it better. I watched her change my perception of her as she spoke articulately about societal standards and how important a person’s image is. She’s an intelligent girl, and she made me realize how many stereotypes have been implanted in my head by the media, society, and myself. And to all the girls out there, Cameron’s right, looks aren’t everything.

Kickstarter projects you should support

3

After backing over 20 projects, I can officially say that I am obsessed with Kickstarter. I wrote a blog post about it last year in April, but so many new things have happened since then! For those who haven’t heard about Kickstarter, it’s basically a place where people can create projects to get funded. Whether they are in production or near completion, the creators are obligated to complete their project and reward Backers. Each Backer pledges a certain amount and receive different tiers of rewards.

This is my short list of projects that you should consider backing. For the most part I have personally shelled out some money for these projects, but for those that I am hesitant in spending money for I’ve decided to feature as well (because they’re cool ideas and you may personally think it is worth the money!)

Art

Meme the World

This project encourages people to grab a mug with a cute design on it, photograph it, upload it to a blog and pass it along. It’s a really neat concept!

The PixelWho Project – Original Doctor Who Art Prints by Nathan Skreslet

For those who love the Doctor Who series and the pixelated look, I recommend decorating your room with these prints!

Comics

NIKO and the Sword of Light – Fully Animated Comicbook

Comic books are sweet, but an animated comic book with voices and all is even sweeter! This is a really unique project that you should consider investing in.

Design

Lace Anchors 2.0: A simple design for simple people.

These are quite affordable plastic molds that basically change your tie-up shoes into slip-ons! They’re a very functional and useful product!

Rhino Shield: The Impact Resistant Screen Protector or Impact & Super Scratch Resistant Screen Protectors

These screen protectors are basically rivals of the Ghost Shield, but seem to be more versatile than the famous product. My friend’s screen shattered despite having the Ghost Shield, and the demonstration videos for the screen protectors look as if the screens will be 100% protected. I invested in the Rhino Shield, but both projects look very trustworthy.

Grabit Robot Multipurpose Holder

This is a super neat tool that holds up two items of your choice; sometimes putting things in jars is inconvenient when grabbing something. This project is super adorable and would be a nice addition to your home!

Re-Imagining Fast Food

“A system to prep, store and serve from your fridge or on the go. Now you can bring the restaurant home!” is the project’s main description. Essentially they are small boxes that can stack easily or fit into a larger container. It is super convenient for people who to taste ‘fresh meals’!

SNUG – An ultra chic and innovative kitchen gadget.

If you cook a lot and find your spoon or spatula falling into the pot or pan, the SNUG is for you! It’s basically a clip that attaches to the pot/pan which also holds up your utensil!

EGO! Smartmouse: a revolutionary interaction device

This bad boy will hopefully be worth all the money! It is “The first device that allows you to interact with every computer, move freely between them and access your digital identity, seamlessly”. It looks really cool, versatile and brag-worthy. At the rate they’re going, they will probably be able to meet their stretch goal (doubling the size of the cloud space).

IPX-PRO Notebook Covers

For those who hate getting their notebooks ruined, these covers are sleek, beautiful and lightweight.

Fashion

The Knotty Tie: Designed by you – Crafted by us.

Do you love whacky ties but can never find them anywhere? Well this project is for you! Just design your own and these guys will create a high-quality tie for you.

THE 10-YEAR HOODIE: Built for Life, Backed for a Decade!

If you’re the type of person who likes to stick with one comfy hoodie for all occasions, this is the project for you! If you ever find the need to mend these, the creators will do it for free!

Original Grain: All-Natural Wood & Stainless Steel Watches

If you like watches then this project may be for you…the designs are quite stylish and they have reached two stretch goals!

Film & Video

The Cyanide & Happiness Show

…Need I say more? If you love the comics and have seen some of the Youtube videos of Cyanide & Happiness

Cultivating Collectives and Culture – Japan

“We’ll be collecting video, audio, and interviews with key players of the emerging electronic sub-culture in Japan for a web documentary”. A neat little idea that costs about the same as a regular movie ticket!

Food

A Dozen Ways To Celebrate: Twelve Complete Indian Feasts

For those who love Indian food, this cook book has a 100 recipes for you to try!

Grow Jar – A Simple to use Hydrogarden in a Jar

Is growing your own food a painful process for you? Then invest in this jar, where it requires no watering or guess-work!

Strange Donuts

These donuts look very delicious; it’s rare when food projects ship outside of America, so if you’re willing to give them some money then help fund this project!

Bread: A Beginner’s Guide

Ever wanted to make bread? This affordable book is a great way to start!

Games

Zombicide: Season 2

Although pricey, this board game has nabbed over a million in funding! It’s about zombies, of course, and since it’s “season 2”, you’re assured that it’s a popular game!

Net Gain: Corporate Espionage

This is “A strategy video game of Near Future Corporate Espionage! Investigate, plan missions, hire operatives, and dominate your competitors!” Good enough for me!

Artisan Dice Does Handcrafted Polyhedrals

Love collecting D-20 dice? Then consider investing in these bad boys.

STORY WAR : The Storytelling Party Game

Love card games? Story telling? Referencing pop culture? Then this game is for you!

Dungeon Roll – A Dicey Dungeon Delve

Dice games are a lot of fun, and getting extra goodies for being a backer is even better!

INFINIPUZZLE – Out of the Ordinary.

This 350-piece puzzle only has a few days left on its successful project, but if you love puzzles and get bored from solving them easily then this might be the solution for you. INFINIPUZZLE allows you to reshape the puzzle in multiple ways!

Small World 2: The Return!

If you loved the board game, consider investing in the video game version of the successful series!

Photography

World’s Most Super Amazing 100% Awesome Cat Calendar

This would be the perfect gift for cat lovers out there!

Operation Milky Way

The Milky Way is a beautiful part of nature; two photographers are on a quest to capture the perfect image!

Publishing

“Fox in the Snow” Book Launch

Children books are so adorable…and you can help support this for a minimum of $10 (with rewards of course!)

ME, FAKEGRIMLOCK: THE BOOK OF AWESOME

…Because who wouldn’t want one?

Technology

Dark Energy Reservoir: Premium Portable Charger

This is a very cool (but expensive) portable charger for anyone looking for an emergency port!

3Doodler: The World’s First 3D Printing Pen

This is a very cool pen that can allow mini sculptures at the tip of your fingers!

I hope you find yourself backing these projects because they are really quit amazing. Enjoy!

Cool things I wish more people thought were Cool

2

I am a lover of old, vintage and just plain weird things. However that doesn’t really strike interest in too many teens.

Record Players: I got a record player for my 13th birthday, and I love it! It’s super cool and sounds way better than mp3 downloads or on ipods. My indie heart juts can’t resist.

record

Ukuleles: So much easier to carry around than a guitar. Plus it sounds like Hawaii, if Hawaii had a sound.

3DS: Why yes I do have a 3DS and yes it is awesome thank you very much.

The Lumineers: Technically they are a band not a thing but still. Folk music is awesome and they are just so talented!

the-lumineers-2-1024x616

Polaroid Instant Film Cameras:  Mine is being shipped in the mail as we speak and I can’t wait to use it!

Grumpy Cat memes: Yes the cat is still very popular but a lot of my friends hate grumpy cat, which doesn’t make any sense whatsoever, because Tartar Sauce the cat aka grumpy cat  is amazing!

Giving Thought To Boiled Potatoes

Note: read my article on what the hunger dinner is before reading this one. 🙂

HungerDinner

The Hunger Dinner was very inspirational, I would say. No, that sounds a bit too generalized. We’ve finished promoting this event and the fruits have blossomed!

How do I start? F0od perhaps?

Collage
Getting the right post-it under your plate gave you better meals. The green was the third-class, the blue second, and the orange the comparatively lavish first-class.
BoiledPotatoes
Third class meal – boiled potatoes :O
Second-class meal - soup and bun :)
Second-class meal – soup and bun 😛
First-class meal - lasagna , salad, and soup
First-class meal – lasagna, salad, and soup 🙂

Talk about differences there. Sharing is caring, though.

Alice was the guest and Alice is part of our committee hosting the event! I’m leaving you dazzled on purpose. What makes it even more confusing is that they are both YAA bloggers too.

Alice on the left hand side was a guest and Alice on the right hand side is the one among us hosting the event :) Confusing, eh?

YVC volunteers, remember the bowl making project?

EmptyBowls

That was the light-hearted side of things, the team bonding, seeing guests enjoy their dinners, all that. Here’s where the actual brainstorming began.

There were quite a few speeches from representatives of organizations, including the Alex health clinic, who founded a Youth health clinic (good job!) from last year’s donations, Social Venture Partners, and of course Youth Central. I was particularly was moved by these quotes in the address by John Rook of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. They only add up to my bank of knowledge about poverty.

Our youth speaker was very motivational; Theo Dillenburg was a drug addict for 7 years starting when he attended high school, ending up in homelessness. He found his way out of addiction, but only after he realized something, as he accounts it, that “homeless does not discriminate.”

TheoDillenburg
This is what he had looked like 6 month’s ago.

Homeless, in his eyes, is not a “character defect” as the stigma says. He expressed gratitude for those that helped him out of it, out of his trouble in Hastings in Vancouver, who assisted him in stepping out of poverty here, such as miracle workers and the Exit.

IMG_1223

What does this picture symbolize? This was John Rook’s analogy to Poverty as a whole. He mentioned that instead of a recycling bin, he wanted a picture of a bear-proof garbage bin to display how people who are impoverished are forced to step out of their natural ways to gain food just like bears who scavenge in towns.

While only 5-10% are "chronically homeless, the ones we often deem as those who search garbage cans, all suffer from hunger.
While only 5-10% are “chronically homeless, the ones we often deem as those who search garbage cans, all suffer from hunger, whether temporarily for a few days or a few months.

That’s potatoes for thought.  We are now in our fifth year of the Ten Year Plan to End Homeless, aren’t we? A big applause to all of the speakers for their contributions.

A big thank you too, to the entire YVC steering committee (maybe not myself since I was so lazy), especially the Hunger Dinner sub-committee!

Teamwork!

Why I love TED.com

Whenever I’m feeling down, my favourite novels are waiting in the library, my movies have been watched a sickening number of times, my videogames prove incompetent for my intellect, and the weather is utterly undesirable, TEDDY BEARS.com, always seems to cheer me up. Most people, upon hearing mention of TED.com, slink away, cringing at the thought of an educational, inspirational, and innovative, nerdy cousin of YouTube. While I, along with many others have learnt to appreciate the wonders of TED.com.

TED.com is a non-profit organization, that stands for technology, entertainment and design, established in 1984. Despite, encompassing much more than those three basic pillars, TED still has its grounds rooted in the intellectual and innovative side of thinking. TED hosts conferences and events where people specialized in their fields, those willing to share their stories, experiences, ideas and wonders, come and speak. These speeches are broadcasted on TED.com. With various topics, from various speakers, TED’s versatility is something to be commended.

My 3 favourite TED Talks are:

1. “Schools Kill Creativity” by Sir Ken Robinson

In this TED talk, the speaker, Sir Ken Robinson, explains his views about his ideas of the current school system and how it squanders childrens’ ambitions, ruthlessly. He explains how he think education systems should be, and what or world will gain through this. With his wit and humour, he makes this deep and sometimes boring subject, enjoyable to many.

2. “The cheap, All-terrain wheelchair” by Amos Winter

In this TED talk, the speaker, Amos Winter, shows us his new invention, a wheelchair. Despite the wheelchair being a comparatively ancient invention, his is much different and much more efficient. His invention, an ingenious idea, to increase mobility for the disabled in 3rd world countries, leaves everyone in awe.

3. “Have you heard the one about the Iranian-American” by Maz Jobrani

In this hilarious TED talk, comic Maz Jobrani, expresses his views on his nationality, Iranian, and how it affects him, positively and negatively. Humorous, and easily understandable, this talk never has a dull moment.

As you see all three of these are on totally different strains and are all equally appealing. It gives so many people chances to express their views and helps educate thousands of people for free.

I hope the next time you’re bored you’ll keep your PS3 lonely, and resort to TED. TEDDY BEARS.com.

International Summer School For Young Physicists

1

It’s almost the middle of March, and student’s are finding themselves buried in the mountain of tests and assignments that never fails to show up just before Spring Break. It is therefore perfectly understandable that as high school students, there is probably nothing that you would want more that than to throw away your pens and pencils, and rip all the papers so you never have to write again. However, for those of you aspiring physicists out there, you may just have to pick up your pencil back up, and start writing, because I am here to inform you of a program that you probably dream of.

The International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP) is truly the ultimate program for physics enthusiasts. Hosted at the Perimeter Institute: Canada’s leading theoretical physics research institute, the program boasts of:

  • Presentations by leading researchers on cutting edge theoretical physics: topics range from super-string theory and quantum computing to dark matter and black holes.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with leading international theoretical physicists through small group mentoring sessions.
  • Mini-courses on modern physics designed to deepen insights into Einstein’s ideas and the quantum nature of our universe.
  • Hands-on research experience and opportunities along with tours of first-class research facilities.

Apart from the factors mentioned above, the program also provides students with the opportunity to meet and befriend amazingly talented young physics enthusiasts from around the globe. Personally, I believe that it is these connections that is the true value behind ISSYP.

So if you’re like me, and have an insatiable thirst for knowledge on the great physical laws, then check out the application on this websiteThe deadline is March 29th, and remember that for every bit of extra work that you put in now, you will be rewarded tremendously later on.

P.S. Just to prove that the program is just as fun as it is educating, here is a clip of a “toothbrush contest” that was present during one of the ISSYP sessions:

How to Make a Chocolate Butterfly

0

Chocolate has to be one of the greatest foods in the world. Chocolate makes up the majority of a child’s bag on Halloween, takes its place inside a cute heart-shaped box on Valentine’s Day, hides around the yard wrapped in shiny aluminum on Easter, and sits under a tree at Christmas time. But although chocolate is so common in our lives, how many of us are really aware of the creative things we can make from it? Ladies and gentlemen, behold; chocolate art.

How to make a chocolate butterfly

You will need:

-a small bowl of melted chocolate

-a pencil

-blank paper

-a piece of parchment paper

-1 baking sheet

-1 pastry bag

On the blank sheet of paper, draw two halves of a butterfly. This will be your butterfly template.

3565074948_2a7045b944

Place the butterfly template on the baking sheet, then cover it with see through/translucent parchment paper. Pour the melted chocolate (after it’s cooled down slightly) into the pastry bag and cut a small opening in the tip. Be careful to keep the template and parchment paper in place; you can use tape or a paper weight. Outline the template with chocolate and wait for it to cool. Afterwards, carefully peel off the wings and use the warm chocolate from your pastry bag to glue the two halves together.

015

And there you go, it’s as simple as that. But there’s so much more to chocolate art than butterflies. Here are a few videos on basic chocolate art.

The owner of these videos is called ‘thechocolateaddict‘. She has so many awesome tutorials on making simple, but beautiful art with chocolate. Her channel will teach you how to temper chocolate, and why tempered chocolate works better as decoration than normal melted chocolate. So here’s to easy, pretty, and delicious ways to accessorize your cake, or other baked goods. Have fun and eat lots of chocolate!

How to take the perfect selfie

0

Facebook means profile picture. Profile picture means wasting eons with your camera, trying to get that pristine, perfect, “effortless” look. Taking advantageous photos is hard. Here are some tips on taking the perfect selfie:

1. Forehead out, chin down.

If you’re taking a head shot, you can prevent a Jabba the Hut chin simply by sticking your forehead out. Not too much. But, enough so that shadows will catch your jaw and emphasize it.

Before and After. Jawlines!

2. Learn what lighting works best for you.

Lighting changes your face. Drastically. If you’re highly desperate for a truly fabulous picture, spend your Saturday experimenting with light. Try different periods in the day, in different venues, with artificial and natural light; whichever makes you look the best. Harsh flashes are not good for oily skin, and they can be glaring. If you need a flash, try covering it with toilet paper to soften the light. Natural light is usually better, unless you’re under the glaring sun. Mild sun, or cloudy days are the best lighting for everybody.

Classic serial killer look. If you’re going for that.

Side lighting is generally better than front lighting for everybody. Unless you want to totally wash your face out with white light, which can be beneficial if you have many blemishes.

3. Don’t take a bathroom mirror shot with your phone.

Ew. Cliché much?

4. Instead…try something different. Be creative!

Spice up your photos. Add something unique. Whatever. Be imaginative. And, even if you are terribly un-photogenic, you can still take something funny and fabulous. If you really want to get people to hit that “like” buttons, humor works well! You also don’t have to try to be pretty, which is such a plus.

5. Pick a nice background setting.

Okay, well, maybe I violated this. Actually, I usually TRY for a ridiculous look because that’s my thing. But. If you want it to be a pretty picture, have a nice background. My photo, if you look carefully, has a bunch hot spring-ers in it. Classy.

6. Pose!

Posture is key to a good picture. You look slimmer if you tilt on a slightly off-balance pose. The typical model pose is 3/4 towards the camera, one shoulder forward, one foot back. Angle yourself in front of a mirror until you find something you like. You can add interest to your photograph if you aren’t directly in the middle. Instead, sit in the first 1/3 or 2/3 of the frame.

7. Wear nice clothes.

Obviously. Find your color. Even if you think it’s a good color on you, it might not be in different lighting. Maybe makeup too. Unless you’re really good at contouring, avoid it if you’re getting your photo taken. The shadows of the makeup can seem highly unnatural. Cameras are also ultra-sensitive to highlights and shimmer. Use with caution.

Oh, and even though this sounds silly, don’t wear mid-calf socks with shorts. This is probably a thing most people wouldn’t consider, but I do it subconsciously all the time. It makes your calves look really fat. Trust me.

Pretty accessories…

8. Avoid bloat?

No one wants to be bloated. Which means, staying off carbohydrates and high-sodium foods. Possibly even cutting down on water. I personally don’t believe in this. Food over everything.

9. Angles.

More angles? So math-y. Take pictures from eye level, or above. If you take them from below, your face looks wider, and you risk double chins. Downwards angles create pointier chins, thinner faces, but also shortness. Take your pick. Typically, you should look over the camera if it’s at eye level so your eyes remain wide open. Long distance shots have a tendency to make eyes look small.

10. Look taller?

I don’t have an issue with this either. But, if you want to look taller, stand on something. I’m not even kidding. Especially if you’re with your uber tall friends. No one will know! To create the illusion of longer legs, stand at the model 3/4 angle again, and bend one leg slightly.

Color!

11. Photoshop.

Who says you can’t do it? Instagram is great, especially with all its fancy effects. Go black and white. Muddle with contrast. Usually, girls should have lower contrast, and guys should have greater contrast. Color filter. Erase spots. Whatever!

That’s all my humble knowledge.

Good luck!

Video of the Day: What if wild animals ate fast food?

0

We hear warnings against fast food and junk food all the time – but it’s not like they’re going to blow us up like balloons, right? A bottle of sprinkles with a tub of ice cream once in a while won’t hurt…

This video really put into perspective just how unhealthy we are. Though it may not show in our physical appearance, processed snacks, microwave meals, and fast food are the cancers of the food world. Yes, so after a decade of sitting at home, it’s time to hit the gym, ladies and gentleman. – Not just for New Year’s Day’s resolution.

On a side note, my chemistry class had McDonald’s and Dairy Queen burgers sitting around in ziplock bags for an experiment. It’s been a month now and nothing much has happened since. So what about that burger you were about to order?
