5 Study Tips for Success

0

Finals are coming up soon and it’s a good time to begin your studying so there won’t be any last minute cramming happening. But wait – before you crack open that textbook, it’s a good idea to think about your studying strategies and learn more effectively so you can finish faster and ace that exam. Here are a few stress-reducing strategies that will help you improve your test scores.

Such is the woeful life of a stressed student…

Handwrite it.

Writing out your notes has been proven to help you retain information more effectively than typing. Research shows that the act of using your pen and creating shapes on paper sends feedback signals to your brain, which leaves an impression called a “motor memory”. This makes it easier for you to remember the information later on. Although you may finish studying a little later this way than if you typed out your notes, this method of studying could pay off more in the long run.

Take a break.

Instead of staying in a quiet room for hours on end, take a short break in between periods of studying. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a good idea to study like there’s no tomorrow, sitting at your desk forever with your textbook as your only companion. It has been found that taking a 10-minute walking break will improve focus for up to two hours afterwards.

Change it up.

In addition to taking small breaks, changing locations can also help refresh your mind when it starts to lag. If you have been sitting at your desk, try moving to the kitchen table, or going to the library. This will help you regain your motivation and bring your focus back to studying, which in turn may help you improve your recollection of the material.

Drink water.

Energy drinks and coffee may help you stay awake, but these drinks can also make you dehydrated. Mild dehydration can impair cognitive function and mental performance; so make sure to keep a water bottle close at hand whenever you study.

Test yourself.

Start with some knowledge of the material – you may want to have written notes on the subject to familiarize yourself with it. But rather than just looking over those notes again and going into the exam, give yourself a test. A paper in the Journal of Experimental Psychology describes two key ways to enhance your “studying by testing” method. First, delay your test – the longer the time between testing and studying, the more advantage you gain. This is why it’s a good idea to commence studying early on. In addition, try to make your practice test as similar as possible to the actual exam. The more that the study situation resembles the testing situation, the more likely you are to remember the information during the test.

I wish this was a valid excuse

This method works because you train yourself to successfully get to the information in memory, and that makes the memories stronger and easier to retrieve later, i.e. at the exam.

Good luck on your studying! 🙂

The BEST paintball facilities near Calgary!

Are you one of those folks that wanted to try a “First Person Shooter” in real life, but Laser Tag just wasn’t doing you justice? Have you searched far and wide to try to find the best paintball place near your city?

If you have a car and don’t mind driving for a bit, then I recommend Capture The Flag Outdoor Cochrane! This place is owned by a really nice family, and they have over 20 different courses! They even have all you can eat hot dog BBQ and crystal powdered drinks!

cochrane_paintball

They are always open from 9AM to 10PM and a ton of guns available to rent out. Typically games cost $7, and paintballs (plus gun rental) range from $18 up to $200! If that is a little too much for you, then you can join in a group of 25+ and save $7 for the game fee. However, this place always has great deals and coupons online; so if you ever plan to paintball, then stock up on those coupons!

A few concerns I have with the place is the small space and area where you get equipment or more paintballs; when it is super busy in that area, there is ultimately no space to walk around! Their masks also tend to fog up, despite the fog spray you can put on it. If you find yourself going to paintball often, I recommend just investing in a good mask (out of all the equipment you can buy).

Overall, the courses are interesting and fun: from forest areas, to tire-filled areas and even a ‘junkyard’ with old cars! You can always find somewhere fun to play at the facilities. Pricing is not too bad for the amount of things you get, but buying extra paintballs can raise your bill quite high!

For those who have never tried paintballing, I recommend going with a group of friends and driving out to Cochrane–you can always stop by at the ice cream shop, and you’ll have a blast playing in their facilities!

Movie Review: The Great Gatsby

1

First thing’s first, I have not read the book so I am reviewing this solely movie wise, not about if it was true to the book or not.

Plot: Nick Carraway, a young man trying to succeed in the success of bonds in New York during the 1920’s, meets his strange neighbour Gatsby. Jay Gatsby hosts wild and huge parties almost every night, no one has ever seen him or ever received an invite, so that is why it is so strange when Nick receives an invitation from Gatsby himself to a party. It is obvious that this is a rare occasion and Nick soon figures out Jay is in need of a huge favour. Gatsby is in love with Nick’s cousin Daisy. They dated 5 years ago and wants to get her back, which would be fine, if she didn’t have a husband.

thegreatgatsby

The movie was very entertaining, it made you laugh  and cry within it’s 2 and a half hour span. The 3D was nice, but not essential to the movie. So I don’t recommend paying the extra dollars for the extra dimension. The actors and actresses were wonderful as well, Leonardo Di Caprio was a convincing Gatsby however, I wasn’t attached to him or even intrigued by his passion for Daisy until his last scene, which I will not give away. Toby Maguire did a great job of playing Nick Carraway, I really loved how you could tell the difference between the young and eager Nick and the older Nick in the mental hospital. I loved how you could see near the end of the movie, the change in him. Carey Mulligan who played Daisy did a great job showing the two different personalities she portrays in front of the two different love interests. However my favourite was Joel Edgerton who played Daisy’s husband, Tom Buchanan, he was very intriguing and did a fabulous job, I could go on about his wonderful job for hours!

gATSBY

I am going to end on the negative note however, this movie is based in the time of the 1920’s which had some amazing jazz music, which I wish they would have showed. The director, in my opinion, did a terrible job of staying true to the time era, the graphics for the buildings and costumes were great, however the soundtrack consisted of many present time music such as Jay Z, Beyoncé, and Lana Del Ray. I also would have liked to see the graphics and quality of the film itself to be as if it were from the 1920’s, I believe that would have been a more interesting approach. Perhaps making it in black and white or even just saturating the colour and make it a low quality, grainy type resolution to get more of the 1920’s feel into the movie.

Overall this was a great movie that I recommend.

For the love of food blogging, try using the Spoonback widget from Urbanspoon!

0

On every Urbanspoon (a trending website!) restaurant review page, the “opinions” section always has a “blog posts” section:

UrbanspoonBLog
From Hot Point Fusion Cafe’s Urbanspoon profile 🙂

Their Spoonback feature enables your food reviews for specific food places to be shown in that section! Letting readers access your food review blogs that way is very advantageous. If you click back to some of my food reviews, you’ll see that they have been recently updated with this widget:

UrbanspoonExamplar
From this article 🙂

What this widget (or the several other variants that you can incorporate) does is it notifies Urbanspoon of your blog post. After a few days, you should hopefully be able to see your post of the food place in that section! Here’s the FAQ.

Many of you who are apt to blogging will know how to add widget to blogs by HTML codes. To insert the widget into the post, search up the restaurant that you have reviewed (doesn’t have to be in Calgary of course) and click the “add a blog post” button towards the bottom of the page.

You will see a page that looks similar to this with different sizes:

UrbanspoonWidgets

Copy the code on the right to your post in the HTML editor in the “edit post” interface, which is referred to by different names depending on the blog platform you use.

Youth Are Awesome is hosted on WordPress, where you can find the HTML editor as you switch from “visual” to “text” in “edit post”:

UrbanspoonHTML

While the codes are be confusing, find what you’ve typed and the URLs you have inputted out of the long strings to help you place it where you would like it to be.

Tutti Frutti Review!

1

Yaaay for Frozen Yogurt!

Ever since the sun has been coming out more often, these frozen yogurt machines just seems to be popping out everywhere!

IMG_0001

Speaking of which, let’s give a warm welcoming to the new Tutti Frutti located on 130 Ave!

If you didn’t know, this saturday (May 11) was their Grand Opening, and I had the honor to be one the first guests to try it out!

So what’s so different about Tutti Frutti? I mean Qoola, Menchies, even the old school Yogen Fruz, all sell frozen yogurt. Why Tutti Frutti?

Well here’s top 5 reasons why:

5. Too Many Flavours!

Tutti Frutti has 16 different flavours for you to choose, from cream lovers to sorbet lovers, from birthday cake to blueberries, from lychee to taro, and soy to non-soy. I was so overwhelmed by the variety that I had to try every single one! Most importantly, to those of you that are lactose-intolerant and can’t have ice cream or frozen yogurt. But not to fret, it’s Tutti Frutti to the rescue! Not only do they provide nutritional guides to indicate which flavours are cream based, but also they have two yummy flavours, made from soy beans, dedicated to lactose-intolerant victims! (Hip Hip Hoooraay)

Here’s the flavours. Don’t be too amazed! 🙂

Tutti Frutti Flavours

4. Too many toppings!

Aside from flavours, Tutti Frutti offers over 30 different toppings. Usually, my goto toppings are mochi and cheesecake bites, but sadly, the cheesecake bites weren’t delivered yet, so I took that as a sign to try something new. So what did I put? Boba! Yes, I know I’m super lame for not trying it until then, but wow, were they every tasty. Before I tried boba, I thought they were like tapioca pearls, so kinda squishy and chewy, but was I wrong. The boba pops in your mouth the second you bite in to them. They were so good! Also, the brownie bites were the best I’ve had. It was crunchy on the outside, yet soft on the inside. Whether your a skors lover or a boba lover, you’ll be a Tutti Frutti Lover. 😉

Toppings

3. It’s Healthy!

Frozen Yogurt is super healthy, low fat and low calorie, so you won’t feel guilty for that second cup. In addition, frozen yogurt contains live bacteria that helps with digestion and prevents colon cancer!

2. It’s fun!

I mean who doesn’t like swirling your own frozen yogurt and decorating it with all sorts of toppings! Who knows, maybe in the next few years there’s gonna be a Frozen Yogurt art master out there, maybe even a frozen yogurt decorating contest, so better train yourself now then later!

1. What time is it? Summer Time!

If you didn’t notice, Summer is just around the corner! With these high 20’s in Calgary these days, everyone needs some cool refreshments! So why not get some super healthy snack that just so happens to have a variety of flavours and toppings, and is fun to make/eat? Join the movement!

유자차! Simply put in English, Yujacha….or Citron Tea

0

Yujacha

If you head to any Asian supermarkets in Calgary, you’re likely to see one of these large jars sitting on shelves sitting along with other tea products instead of with jams. The contents are much more reminiscent of a marmalade than something to make “tea” with.

The doubts are definitely reasonable – Citron tea, yujacha (유자차 in Hangul), is a soothing remedy for colds and coughs similar in role in Korea to lemon and honey tea. Yuja, referred in English by the Japanese name as yuzu, redeems its aromatic qualities through preserving its peel with honey or sugar. It is appropriately a herbal tea as it does not contain the tea plant, of course without tea bags!

While fresh yuzu is not something to be found in Calgary, huge jars of ready-to citron tea are used to prepare this drink full of Vitamin C, with other variants such as Jujube tea and Aloe tea also available. Just mix a spoonful and get going with your tea without the sour and bitter taste of the fresh fruit! (Or secretly put it on bread and see how it tastes as a marmalade xD)

First comes a spoonful…
then comes the water, hot or cold! (I've always put the water after but you could argue)

Wiener-Schnitzel Haus Brings a Taste of Germany to Calgary

Great schnitzel is hard to find outside of Bavarian cities like Kimberly, which is why I’m happy to say I’ve finally found a place.  Not only is the schnitzel delicious at Wiener-Schnitzel Haus, but they also serve six different variations on the traditional German dish.  One thing to note is the portions are huge; an order of schnitzel covers the entire plate!  IMG_6519Along with a side of spatzle, a schnitzel could be easily shared.  Which I’d recommend doing, because really what is schnitzel without spatzle?  The meal came with a side of Austrian salad; a delicious mix of salads including beet, potato, and coleslaw.  The salads had perfect spicing, and I regret being too full to finish it.  The waitress, who also happened to be one of the owners, was friendly and attentive the entire meal, giving suggestions on choices, refilling waters, and chatting with us pleasantly.  Then there was her desserts, amazing and made with pride.  You could tell she put love and care into her desserts.  She even had a IMG_6526seasonal twist available, a raspberry cream in the Cardinal cake instead of a coffee cream.  I, however, as a coffee enthusiast had to try the coffee variation on the Cardinal Slice,  “biscuit layers with apricot glaze, coffee cream and meringue.”  This went deliciously with the dessert coffee I ordered called an Einspanner, real Viennese coffee!

The offerings at the Wiener-Schnitzel Haus are expensive;  $21 for the Wiener Schnitzel with fries and salad, Spatzle with Mushroom Sauce was $12, dessert is $9.50, and the Einspanner coffee is $4.

Nestled in a strip mall at 4703 Bowness Road NW, next to Notables, the Wiener Haus is only open Tuesday though Saturday from 4pm to 9pm.  Thats it!

Wiener-Schnitzel Haus is a small independent restaurant with the best Schnitzel I have tasted in Calgary, and desserts that I would gladly drive from far south to enjoy.

“Quotable” Quotes from John Green

0

Hank-John-GreenIf you haven’t heard of the Green brothers, let me give you a quick run down.  John Green, (whose quotes I have featured in this article), has to be one of my favourite writers.  If you’ve ever heard someone exclaim “Have you read TFIOS?!”, they are referring, not to some extra-terrestrial piece of literary material, but in fact, Green’s latest book The Fault In Our Stars.  His others novels include Looking for Alaska, An 11870085Abundance of Katherines, and Paper Towns.  His books far exceeded my expectations (and I had kept the bar quite high, listening to all the amazing recommendations I heard from friends). I encourage you all to check them out!

Together, him and his brother Hank Green both put up video blogs on their very popular YouTube channel Vlogbrothers.  One of their most popular catch phrases is DFTBA, which for future reference, means “don’t forget to be awesome” in case you hear it from a fellow Nerdfighter (also known as John and Hank Green’s Fans)  You may have even watched one of Hank’s Crash Course videos when cramming last minute for a biology or world history test.  If you haven’t seen these, I recommend starting with That’s Why Carbon is a Tramp: Crash Course Biology #1.  Don’t ask questions, just watch – I promise you won’t regret it!

6930606687_ec5852e4ec_m

Anyways, long story short, the thing I love about John Green’s writing (besides absolutely everything else), is that he’s so quotable and we all know how much I love quotes!  Here are some of my favourites:

  •  “I believe the universe wants to be noticed. I think the universe is improbably biased toward the consciousness, that it rewards intelligence in part because the universe enjoys its elegance being observed. And who am I, living in the middle of history, to tell the universe that it-or my observation of it-is temporary?”
  • “At some point, you gotta stop looking up at the sky or one of these days ,you’ll look back down and see that you’ve floated away too”
  • “Grief does not change you…it reveals you”
  • “You can love someone so much…But you can never love people as much as you can miss them.”
  • That’s the thing about pain…it demands to be felt”
  • “The only way out of this labyrinth of suffering is to forgive”
  • “The marks humans leave are too often scars.”
  • “Books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal.”
  • “Maybe there’s something you’re afraid to say, or someone you’re afraid to love, or somewhere you’re afraid to go. It’s gonna hurt. It’s gonna hurt because it matters.”
  • “You like someone who can’t like you back because unrequited love can  be survived in a way that once-requited love cannot. ”
  • “Without pain, how could we know joy?’ This is an old argument in the field of thinking about suffering and its stupidity and lack of sophistication could be plumbed for centuries but suffice it to say that the existence of broccoli does not, in any way, affect the taste of chocolate.”
  • “But it is the nature of stars to cross, and never was Shakespeare more wrong than when he has Cassius note, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars / But in ourselves.”

Ya’an Earthquake Part 2

1

“‘The quake zone urgently needs tents, quilt, instant food, drinking water and medical goods,” the charity posted to Weibo, China’s version of Twitter. “Please try your best to donate cash.”

In response, hundreds of thousands of people quickly posted emoticons giving the government-run charity a literal thumbs-down.’ – BBC News

Why would Chinese people do that to Red Cross, one of the biggest humanitarian organizations in the world that aided so many people when they are in need?

The_Red_Cross_Society_of_the_Republic_of_China_logo

According to BBC News, ‘”Lao Xu”, was enraged by a photo of Chinese Red Cross employees in the quake zone. “They’re eating instant noodles while wearing expensive watches. These photos are just asking for criticism.”‘

That was not it. The major incident that caused distrust of Red Cross of China from Chinese netizens was the Guo Meimei Incident. Although the Red Cross denied to have any relationship with her or her luxurious lifestyle, it is obvious that Red Cross of PRC cannot gain people’s trust back, as people are doubtful of whether their donations will reach to the victims. The stats about their corruption can be found in the BBC News article.

Right now, other NGO and smaller charities in China are getting a lot more funds than they used to as they have higher transparency of operations, and they really do things more effectively.

The situation in Ya’an is controlled now, thus, it is fading out from the news, which is a good indication of effective work. Internet played a huge role in this, as it helped to maintain transparency and communication during the whole process.

An Inspirational Poem – To This Day

THE BEST POEM EVER. YOU MUST READ. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY, THIS IS THE TRUTH OF TWO BULLIED KIDS WHO MADE IT OUT THROUGH AGONY, PAIN AND BLOODSHED. IF YOU CARE PLEASE READ. PLEASE.

To This Day by Shane Koyczan

To This Day
When I was a kid
I used to think that pork chops and karate chops
were the same thing
I thought they were both pork chops
and because my grandmother thought it was cute
and because they were my favourite
she let me keep doing it

not really a big deal

one day
before I realized fat kids are not designed to climb trees
I fell out of a tree
and bruised the right side of my body

I didn’t want to tell my grandmother about it
because I was afraid I’d get in trouble
for playing somewhere that I shouldn’t have been

a few days later the gym teacher noticed the bruise
and I got sent to the principal’s office
from there I was sent to another small room
with a really nice lady
who asked me all kinds of questions
about my life at home

I saw no reason to lie
as far as I was concerned
life was pretty good
I told her “whenever I’m sad
my grandmother gives me karate chops”

this led to a full scale investigation
and I was removed from the house for three days
until they finally decided to ask how I got the bruises

news of this silly little story quickly spread through the school
and I earned my first nickname

pork chop

to this day
I hate pork chops

I’m not the only kid
who grew up this way
surrounded by people who used to say
that rhyme about sticks and stones
as if broken bones
hurt more than the names we got called
and we got called them all
so we grew up believing no one
would ever fall in love with us
that we’d be lonely forever
that we’d never meet someone
to make us feel like the sun
was something they built for us
in their tool shed
so broken heart strings bled the blues
as we tried to empty ourselves
so we would feel nothing
don’t tell me that hurts less than a broken bone
that an ingrown life
is something surgeons can cut away
that there’s no way for it to metastasize

it does

she was eight years old
our first day of grade three
when she got called ugly
we both got moved to the back of the class
so we would stop get bombarded by spit balls
but the school halls were a battleground
where we found ourselves outnumbered day after wretched day
we used to stay inside for recess
because outside was worse
outside we’d have to rehearse running away
or learn to stay still like statues giving no clues that we were there
in grade five they taped a sign to her desk
that read beware of dog

to this day
despite a loving husband
she doesn’t think she’s beautiful
because of a birthmark
that takes up a little less than half of her face
kids used to say she looks like a wrong answer
that someone tried to erase
but couldn’t quite get the job done
and they’ll never understand
that she’s raising two kids
whose definition of beauty
begins with the word mom
because they see her heart
before they see her skin
that she’s only ever always been amazing

he
was a broken branch
grafted onto a different family tree
adopted
but not because his parents opted for a different destiny
he was three when he became a mixed drink
of one part left alone
and two parts tragedy
started therapy in 8th grade
had a personality made up of tests and pills
lived like the uphills were mountains
and the downhills were cliffs
four fifths suicidal
a tidal wave of anti depressants
and an adolescence of being called popper
one part because of the pills
and ninety nine parts because of the cruelty
he tried to kill himself in grade ten
when a kid who still had his mom and dad
had the audacity to tell him “get over it” as if depression
is something that can be remedied
by any of the contents found in a first aid kit

to this day
he is a stick of TNT lit from both ends
could describe to you in detail the way the sky bends
in the moments before it’s about to fall
and despite an army of friends
who all call him an inspiration
he remains a conversation piece between people
who can’t understand
sometimes becoming drug free
has less to do with addiction
and more to do with sanity

we weren’t the only kids who grew up this way
to this day
kids are still being called names
the classics were
hey stupid
hey spaz
seems like each school has an arsenal of names
getting updated every year
and if a kid breaks in a school
and no one around chooses to hear
do they make a sound?
are they just the background noise
of a soundtrack stuck on repeat
when people say things like
kids can be cruel?
every school was a big top circus tent
and the pecking order went
from acrobats to lion tamers
from clowns to carnies
all of these were miles ahead of who we were
we were freaks
lobster claw boys and bearded ladies
oddities
juggling depression and loneliness playing solitaire spin the bottle
trying to kiss the wounded parts of ourselves and heal
but at night
while the others slept
we kept walking the tightrope
it was practice
and yeah
some of us fell

but I want to tell them
that all of this shit
is just debris
leftover when we finally decide to smash all the things we thought
we used to be
and if you can’t see anything beautiful about yourself
get a better mirror
look a little closer
stare a little longer
because there’s something inside you
that made you keep trying
despite everyone who told you to quit
you built a cast around your broken heart
and signed it yourself
you signed it
“they were wrong”
because maybe you didn’t belong to a group or a click
maybe they decided to pick you last for basketball or everything
maybe you used to bring bruises and broken teeth
to show and tell but never told
because how can you hold your ground
if everyone around you wants to bury you beneath it
you have to believe that they were wrong

they have to be wrong

why else would we still be here?
we grew up learning to cheer on the underdog
because we see ourselves in them
we stem from a root planted in the belief
that we are not what we were called we are not abandoned cars stalled out and sitting empty on a highway
and if in some way we are
don’t worry
we only got out to walk and get gas
we are graduating members from the class of
fuck off we made it
not the faded echoes of voices crying out
names will never hurt me

of course
they did

but our lives will only ever always
continue to be
a balancing act
that has less to do with pain
and more to do with beauty.

Photo of the Day: You Are Lovely

0

So I went walking downtown on the weekend and came across this wonderful little message written on the side of a building. I had to take a picture. It’s the little things like these that can make your day better. It’s surprising how much a little anonymous note can affect you. Although I do not know the intention behind this, whether or not it was to be kind, or to be tumblr famous, I do know that whoever wrote this has impacted people. For example, they made some people passing by happy, but they could have made the shop owners mad. As you can see in this photo, the wall had clearly just been repainted however, if they didn’t appreciate the message they could have got rid of it easily. But maybe that’s the whole point behind this message, that we could take our own time to create a little background story to those three simple words. We may never know the intention, but I’m sure we can all agree that the person who did write this is, as a matter of fact, lovely.

Bring meaning to Mother’s Day

0

Mother’s Day is approaching quickly, and as cheesy as it sounds, I started thinking about all our moms do for us. I suggest you do the same. Take a second. Go through your day to day life, and the difference your mom, mother, or whatever you want to call her makes.

In case you were unaware, Mother’s Day is this coming Sunday. Instead of the traditional, meaningless store-bought card,  bouquet of flowers, or coffee mug, how about finding your own way to show your mom you actually care? Again, think what your mom sacrifices for you. This is your one day to prove to her that its at least kind of worth it.

To get your creativity flowing, here are a few ideas of how you could make a more meaningful day for your mother:

  • Make food Breakfast in bed? I know my mom is insanely grateful when she doesn’t have to deal with meals for mothers-day-gifts-ideas_1367946263a day. Be creative. How about a mini buffet? Yum…
  • Homemade card Yes, these can be cheesy, but seriously, there are so many ways to make your own card that is so much more personal compared to buying something and just signing it. Check out Pinterest or similar sites for super easy designs and inspiration.

  • A twist on flowers At least to me, flowers are beautiful and I love them, but if I wanted to know that somebody cared about me, I’d prefer something a bit less traditional and, well, normal. But don’t throw away the flower idea. How about making your own form of flowers? Again, Pinterest, tumblr, and tons of other sites have loads of ideas. Or check out a post I did on ribbon flowers. Or check out this post by a fellow blogger on different ways to give flowers.

  • Personalize something This can be a lot easier than you’d think. Something as simple as decorating a journal or binder can be a nice touch of originality, and if it’s something your mom uses in her daily life, you’ll always be in her heart <3

  • Most importantly! Make something special to your mom Baseball-loving mom? Scrapbooking mom? Organic product-crazy mom? Know your mom, and acknowledge her for who she is.

I stumbled upon Miranda Rensch’s blog post about her list and wanted to share some cool tools for you:

2. Easel.ly

Easel.ly is another free web-based tool for creating infographics. You cannot create graphs using real data with this tool, but its really good for conceptual visualizations and storytelling. It has a beautiful user interface and the themes you can start with are gorgeous. The themes support many common purposes: map, flow-chart, and comparison/relationship graphing. This tool has the best selection of well-design objects (people, a bunch if icons, landmarks, maps, animals, etc.) and backgrounds that I’ve seen throughout this list of tools. Additionally, you can upload your own images with the free version. You can download a web-quality version as JPG. This tool is still in beta, but it seemed to work pretty well to me!
Artful storytelling always intrigued the audience. This tool looks very cool!

4. Visual.ly

Visual.ly (I know, these visualization tools love their ‘.ly’s!) has some simple free tools worth mentioning, many of which integrate with social networks to analyze Twitter and Facebook data. You can create fun Venn diagrams, Twitter account show-downs, visuals that analyze hash tags, and a few others, but there’s almost no customization available. However, they offer a marketplace where you can get connected with visual designers and motion graphics artists who specialize in infographics. The site itself also has a ton of great info graphics to inspire you or your designers. There is some serious data visualization eye candy in there, people.

I have visited this site and there are amazing infographics on here. It is always easier to understand something when pictures are involved!

9. TimelineJS

TimelineJS uses a google spreadsheet with links to YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, Sound Cloud, and other media sources to create really nice-looking timelines. You could use this tool to create an interactive visualization of the starting of your company, your client’s company, tell the story of an industry, etc.

Google spreadsheets are very versatile, and if you wanted to create a timeline this is a great tool!
