The flood relief efforts have been extraordinary at rebuilding our city: even with the excitement of the Stampede long gone, summer in Calgary has never been so promising, the streets continuously bustling with countless festivals and activities. However, that is not to forget the tremendous damage brought on by the natural catastrophe. The Calgary Public Library alone had an estimated 20 000 damaged books due to the flood!

A great way to contribute to the community at this time of need is by participating in the 20,000 Books Under the Bow” City-Wide Book Drive. As one who has a wondrous affinity for books and reading, I strongly urge you to dig up those long-forgotten books, DVDs, and CDs and donate it to your local library branch!

Images That Make You Think: Pawel Kuczynski

0

Pawel Kuczynski is known for his many illustrations centering political and economic satire. When I first saw this set of images, I found them to be extremely powerful and astonishingly true. He focuses on widely known global issues and depicts them in an almost surreal, yet very disturbingly permeable way. Kuczynski is a talented artist and uses this gift to voice his opinions in an unique manner.

Supernatural Showdown: Sam VS Dean

0

My new obsession is Supernatural, a science fiction TV show about two very different brothers who hunt demons (werewolves, vampires etc.). I know it sounds like everything else that is out right now, but trust me, it’s not. The first of nine seasons was shot in 2002 so they were kind of the first people to start the trend.

So in celebration of my new favourite thing, I conducted a survey to have a mini “Battle of the Brothers”. I think this is the only battle where Sam and Dean cannot simply rely on rock salt, but have rely on the votes of their devoting fans to win.

I got ten responses to my survey that I like to call “The Ultimate Supernatural Question”;

Which brother is better, Sam or Dean?

Sam: 6/10  (60% of people like Sam better)

Dean: 4/10 (40% of people like Dean better)

Now obviously this isn’t a very reliable outcome because I only had 10 responses and there are so many factors to consider, (personality, looks, etc.). I just wanted to have some fun while at the same time promoting this great television series. Feel free comment who you like better!

I put a kind of mini description for both Sam and Dean’s below so you can get some more info about the characters:

Sam is more of a kind and caring person. He is very sympathetic towards the people that have lost friends and family from demons. Sam tries to stay focused on work, so he never really tries to party or take a break from the job.

Sam Winchester

Dean is very business like, he doesn’t get too sympathetic or really takes the time to comfort people in their time of loss, he just wants to kill the demons so it won’t happen again. With that said, he has a  soft side that shows around his family. Dean is also a big flirt and loves to have a good time, he’s super sarcastic and witty but can still be serious when it is needed.

So, I hope you will  join me by watching my new obsession, I need to find more people that I can fangirl with!

Emotions in motion

2

Hey Humans!!

Haha!!  That sounds super-weird eh!!  But in reality, yes we are human beings and we have feelings for every moment of our lives. What do we rely on while making a decision? Brain or heart?? Well, whatever suits us the best. But trust me, for every decision made by the brain, there is an emotion developed in our heart (I made it sound like some biology lesson!) But as I am writing this, I wonder if emotions even play a role in our “modern” lives.

We are developing at a super fast pace and in today’s times, PROFESSIONALISM is the key to success. I feel Professionalism has transformed its meaning from dynamic and formal conduct to some sugar-coated word which means ‘restrictions on expressing ones feelings.’ Does developing mean losing the personalized human to human bond?

The other day while walking home from summer school, I heard a grade 9 boy say ” I can’t tell my teacher that the reason I wasn’t attentive in class today is my sister’s illness. Because that’s just not professional.”  And I could see the darkest shadow of professionalism right there!

I am not trying to look down on professionalism. It has its place in everybody’s lives.  But I am trying to bring back the value of emotions!  Emotions that neither follow any rules of sophistication or professionalism nor do they look at the current trends in the society. They are just there…lingering in our souls,  occasionally reminding us of being humans! YES WE ARE HUMANS!!!  GO FEEL THE MOTIONS OF YOUR EMOTIONS!!

The Spud Mobeel’s salsalicious improvisation

0

Spud Mobeel

So who told you to do a review on fries when you should have taken advantage of being a Salsa Station greeter at Sun and Salsa? Well, well, don’t blame me, blame all the patrons who took all the samples! (Don’t actually do it though. :D) The turnout was amazing, so you might as well get some of the Salsa spirit though our yaasalsayyc tag.

If you don’t mind my improv though, salsa fries at the Spud Mobeel hopefully shouldn’t sound too extreme and out-of-touch…. I still needed something out of the ordinary.

Chipssss
No, I know that looks tasty, but that’s not what we’re getting. 😛

I’m sure you are staring at the spiral fries, but their menu has more to offer than just that. Being a mainstay, salsa fries are fitting for this occasion in a wacky way –

SalsaFriesFingershot
Ooh, gooey!

 SalsaFriesCloseup

So how did it fare? Here are my ratings –

Service – 4/5  – It was good, but it was a busy day after all. Good thing they were able to take in so many orders in such a short time!

Food – 3/5 – The salsa fries aren’t a bad idea (mainly cause their fries are amazing), but the salsa didn’t shine through the fries or anything (it was mostly the nacho cheese that came through). So, umm, maybe just go for poutine next time since I think the real cheese curds are much better than the nacho. It was a messy treat, so do treat it with caution. 🙂

Value – 4/5 – For 5.75, this is plenty compared to the other food truck items you can get at that price point.

Vehicle character and design – 4/5 – Lots of fries on display!

Next task – try their poutine or spiral fries! More fried goodies for the win.

Stampede 101: The Superdogs

DSC_0418Every year that I’ve been to the Calgary Stampede, the President’s Choice Superdogs Show remains my absolute favourite.  Being a big canine fan, there is nothing else I’d rather be doing than spend forty-five minutes watching my furry friends, run, jump, skip rope, weave and perform for the audience to their hearts’ content.  It’s clear that these dogs are not only talented, they are love pleasing the crowd!  Take a look at what I experienced at the show this year during the last day of the Calgary Stampede (photography by yours truly):

Finding Kind- A Documentary

0

FindingKind

A few weeks back I received the magnificent opportunity to attend a documentary “Finding Kind” at the ConocoPhillips Auditorium thanks to Youth Central and Youth Are Awesome!

Finding Kind was a documentary regarding girls and the reasoning behind why they are so mean towards one another. Two girls decided to find the answer by going across the country to talk to different people-girls and guys about their perspectives. The two girls went around to promote kindness between girls, in schools, at houses basically wherever they could get the opportunity. They discovered a lot.

Well why? Why are girls so mean to each other?

1. It is fine when its just two of them but when there is three…it is a crowd. From the documentary we got to understand the true meaning behind all of this. Girls don’t like confrontation so instead they’ll go gossip to get the pain and hurt off their chest unknowingly or knowingly that they are hurting someone else in the process.

(Guys on the other hand just throw a couple punches, directly address their issues and go back to being brothers.)

2. It can also root from the mothers- what children see is what they learn from. If their mother gossips of course her daughter will establish the same character. It is a never-ending cycle.

3. MEDIA. Media portrays girls and friendships in such a negative way, which makes girls insecure in a lot of different ways. For example, TV shows represent the “normal girl or normal friendship” which teens follow as status quo, but in reality every friendship is different. Comparing yourself or your relationships to the ones on TV isn’t going to hep your friendship but rather hinder it. It is quite similar to people, no one is the same, we are all the same so why should we compare ourselves to models in magazines?

But what is the result of all this research, how can girls stop hating on each other?

Simply by being kind, like they say “if you don’t have anything nice to say..don’t say it!” Promote kindness and if you have an issue directly confront the person politely. Not every situation has to be dramatic. 😉

I myself have learned a lot from this documentary and it is fascinating to realize the different reasons behind the way I act, one primarily being media. I too have certain issues that need to be addressed- which I am working on. Today I challenge you to promote kindness and change yourself for the better. Girls can be friends without fights, we just need to think before we act. We can make the world a better place together.

Here is the trailer to this amazing documentary- Be sure to take a look!

3.Cube World

Cube_World_Alpha_Logo

Ever wanted to play an RPG with a pixelated look similar to MineCraft well here is the game for you. Cube world is role playing game where you can choose between 4 classes (Rogue, Ranger, Warrior, Magician) And 2 subclasses  within each. The main goals in cube world are to explore, level up and Conquer dungeons while getting better gear and cool equipment like hang gliders and boats. Cube world may be still in alpha which promises many features to come in the future.  This game is definitely an investment if you believe in the developer to continue to improve the game. I personally believe that the developer has a vision for the future to continuously improve this game. Lastly Cube World is multiplayer and is a lot more fun with a few friends.

2. Sid Meier’s Civilization 5

civilization-5

Civilization is a turn-based strategy game based on the evolution of the human race. In Civilization there are a few ways to win the most common being a domination victory requiring that you control the capital of every Civilization. Every civilization is different and has a few specialized units as well as some unique abilities. For example  France receives extra culture per turn before discovering steam power. Civilization has a large capability when playing multiplayer because you can have up to 12 people in one game.  New Downloadable content gets released continuously while  expansion packs are released once a year which allows for you to never get bored of the civilizations.

1. Star Craft 2 Heart Of The Swarm/Wings Of Liberty

Starcraft2

StarCraft is a real time strategy game which can be very competitive due to it being based on timing and strategy. I recommend either of these games to other people because the gameplay is endless. There is a section in Starcraft called the arcade which allows players to create content using Blizzards map modifier to create special maps, games and simulators. There is also a competitive aspect of Starcraft which is playing 1v1s 2v2s 3v3s and 4v4s with friends and other players to get sent into a league based on your skill level. This allows you to play against players with similar skill levels and eventually be promoted as you improve. Star Craft has 3 races to choose from: Terran (Humans) Zerg (Alien Bugs) Protoss ( High-Tech Aliens) which creates even more game-play and many balance patches to ensure that the game is fair and equal for all races.

How to Deal with Mourning

Recently, my grandmother passed away at the fulfilling age of 92. This week has been an emotional conquest for my family and I. But through it, I have been able to uncover a few tips on how to deal with mourning over a loved one.

When I first was notified of my grandmother’s death, I was surprisingly calm. I believe this stage is what the professionals call, “denial.” But as I came to realize the reality of the passing of my grandmother, I became very emotional. What I can recommend to anyone experiencing the same pain, is to allow the emotions to take their course; do not attempt to hinder the process by hiding your feelings. Soon you will become somewhat at peace with your grievance.

After my emotional “roller-coaster” -for lack of a better word- I reached the reflection period of the grieving process. This stage can be vary among a range of people. Some people may go through anger, some may journey through more misery or some, including myself, can rediscover the happinessSCN_0001_Page_1s they shared with their loved one. Instead of only reflecting upon the regrets that I had or the words I never revoked to my grandmother, I decided to focus on the joyous moments that we shared together. I recalled on her delectable Korean cuisine, her nickname for me (which I shall not reveal to the world-wide web) and her overall sense of benevolence. Although I was able to remember mostly amiable times I spent with my grandmother, there is nothing shameful about reflecting upon upon some of the more sad and resentful accounts. This is your own method of grieving and overcoming the mourning process. But after this stage, make an effort to remain positive of the situation at hand.

My final advice to any of you who may be mourning over someone, is to realize that the person you are grieving for is likely in a more comfortable and peaceful place. My grandmother suffered in a hospice for the last few years of her life. She was unable to move physically, yet her mind was active as ever. Thus, for my grandmother, I know that she is in a much more content state than her life here on earth.

Remember the joyous events of your loved one’s life and rejoice in it. Do not think of this as just a time for mourning over someone, but a chance to celebrate his/her life. If it helps you to find closure as it did me, try to find a physical landmark, where you and your loved one shared a distinct moment together. Once you are there, think about the one you are mourning for and revel among the memories you shared and the life that he/she led.

Should cosmetic surgery = career success?

0

A few weeks ago, I came across a news article that spoke volumes about society nowadays. According to Maclean’s On Campus, increasing numbers of Chinese women are going under the needle, putting China in 3rd place (behind USA and Brazil), for the highest amount of cosmetic procedures performed annually. The most popular operations are “eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty (nose job), and jaw reshaping” as it gives a female a more “attractive” look. As the job market, especially for new graduates, becomes increasingly competitive, many believe that an attractive face can place one ahead of one’s competitors. This lead, however small, has many scrambling for plastic surgery as an option to help land a good job. It’s not only Chinese women choosing this option but women worldwide. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, because “…of difficult economic times, and a belief that hiring is based on looks, millions of American women are looking at cosmetic medical procedures to give them a competitive edge in the workplace. In a new telephone survey compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) of 756 women between the ages of 18 and 64, many reveal cosmetic plastic surgery procedures now appear to be an important rung on the success ladder.”

Even sadder are the statistics that “13 percent (more than 1 out of 10 of the 115-million working-age women) say they would consider having a cosmetic medical procedure specifically to make them more confident and more competitive in the job market; an astounding 3 percent (nearly 3.5-million working women) say they’ve already had a cosmetic procedure to increase their perceived value in the workplace; 73 percent (almost three out of four or, 84-million working women) believe, particularly in these challenging economic times, appearance and youthful looks play a part in getting hired, getting a promotion, or getting new clients and a whopping 80 percent (four out of five or 92-million working women) think having cosmetic medical procedures can boost a person’s confidence.”

This option has been drawing more participants over the years, as the job market becomes more cut-throat and the belief that prettier faces sweeten job deals gets more attention. As MD Thomas Fiala says, “…this trend is not really that new. Men have been coming to me for years, getting their upper eyelids fixed, so they don’t look like the ‘sleepy, old-guy-past-his-prime’. Executives often have specifically told me that they want to look more like their youthful and energetic business competition, and want to have surgery to give the appearance of still being in their prime, rather than being perceived as being ‘tired’ or ‘over-the-hill’.”

All of this makes me wonder…whatever happened to good ‘ol class, intelligence and a positive attitude. I am insinuating that attractive people are not intelligent but rather trying to shine light on the sad fact that having a good resume, shining references and confidence just doesn’t cut it anymore. Companies are getting bolder, some declaring that they hire only attractive people, as in the case of Abercrombie & Fitch and Earl’s. There is even a website now called BeautifulPeople.com, a dating site where employers can look towards, if they want to hire attractive people for their companies, businesses and services.

Success for certain companies depends on attracting customers, preferably the “right” kinds (depending on the needs of that company). And humans have an inherent eye for aesthetically pleasing things, especially people, for positive, lasting impressions.  Is it not an unfair practice for employers to value a physically attractive person over another who has the qualifications necessary and is more suitable? After all, beauty is subjective and often fleeting, and I really don’t like the idea of women subjecting themselves to change to fit the ideals of the majority (which are often misguided). Instead of focusing so much on looks, I believe employers, and people in general, should strive to look for, and become, people who try their best in any task they’re assigned to.

Got a Bad Teacher? Here’s Jeff Bliss.

2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iflIOklflrg

Give that kid an award. And the a Nobel prize – Alana Mayfield (Top comment on video)

Many of us know a bad teacher. They may be non interactive, unpassionate, unfair or maybe a mix of all these traits as they educate students with a lack of vigor and seriousness in their work. Jeff Bliss a senior student in Duncanville High School, Texas, rants on this pressing topic as he openly speaks out to his teacher, on her dispassionate and unfair teaching style.

According to an online interview by RetropolitanCotton, Jeff Bliss had asked his teacher why their class did not get as much time to finish their world history test as other classes. The teacher then replied to Jeff by saying “Quit B****in” (A part left out of public media for obvious reasons), and that’s where Jeff snapped and made his speech, unknowingly being recorded by a fellow classmate in the process.

Before this video, Jeff Bliss was not the greatest student. However as a former drop out, he realized how important his education was, which may have led to this eventual speech in this video, in addition to the teachers apparently ignorant behavior.

Jeff Bliss has not had any repercussions yet from the school board, nor do I doubt he ever will with the public support on him. Right now he is being seen as somewhat of a hero, standing up for something that other kids usually wouldn’t have the guts for. Even on the YouTube comments, there are unified statements of people supporting Jeff which by the way, is a rarity with all the trolls out there.

horrible_b590b5_2680597 ( yep…)

If I met this guy I would personally give him a handshake, a pat on the back, and a simple “well done” as I really feel like he did a good thing. Although the school has made a statement that Jeff could have expressed his concerns in a more “calm and appropriate way”, I think he made his approach perfectly as with his lecture on how teachers must touch students heart, Jeff’s speech has really touched mine.  Although some people found the speech aggressive, what really mattered was that he said something that had to be said, in the face of an authority figure that has a responsibility for their students education.

This story may remind youth about their hardships with bad teachers. As a student myself who is familiar with the bad teacher, the hardest part  is struggling to learn, and how you can’t talk back to them because of their status as the almighty teacher. Students who do talk back to their teacher usually don’t fare well, which is one reason why I thank this rant being public.

There is another perspective to this. It is often assumed that teachers salaries are limited. Could this be a reason why certain teachers take their job less seriously? There are also students who are ignorant towards their studies, further making the teacher apathetic. However I would argue that a teacher must be passionate in their work, in order for their students to do the same.

After this encounter though, I suspect the teacher in question probably has a lot to think about. May this video hopefully inspire other teachers and students on the importance of education.

Thanks for reading!

On a side note, I truthfully think the best teacher is Onizuka (Anime reference). My other favorite was my old Social Studies teacher who basically said that a factor in Napoleon’s conquests may have been rooted by Napoleons unpopularity in military school, which may have been a factor in his personal ambitions (people made fun of him for being short so he got angry I guess ._.). I learned more from that class than any other class that year.

The Lone Ranger brings Texas Outlaws to the Bigscreen

Probably one of the most iconic characters from the 1930s radio-show era, The Lone Ranger  is, to many people, remembered as from the 1950s TV show to be the classic hero and cowboy. This summer, the newest film adaptation of the story was released, starring Armie Hammer as the Ranger, and Johnny Depp as Tonto, his Indian companion. The film follows the story of John Reid, a young lawyer determined to bring justice to the unsettled south, and the journey that transformed him into a being of legend, The Lone Ranger, as recounted from an aging Tonto.

The movie, directed by Gore Verbinski, was the perfect blend of action and adventure while also including comedic elements. The Lone Ranger at times was portrayed as a cheesy and heroic star, much like as he would have been during the character’s time on radio shows and on TV, which lightened up the movie’s mood in comparison to darker, more serious scenes in the movie. The storyline was engaging, and the movie developed many of the majorthe_lone_ranger_movie_poster-armie_hammer-johnny_depp characters’ motives and backgrounds in-depthly, which really drew the audience into the story, and helped the characters to appear less “2D,” making their personalities seem more realistic. The atmosphere was also developed quite effectively; rather than only glamorizing the wild west and life as a ranger, the fear, hardship and uncertainty faced by many townspeople on a daily basis was established extensively through the events and ongoings many of the characters had to face. The soundtrack suited the movie, and kept to the traditional Lone Ranger feel. I liked the soundtrack, and was not surprised that it had been done by Hanz Zimmer, who also did soundtracks for the likes of Gladiator, Inception, and my all time favourite, The Dark Knight.

However, at just under 150 minutes the Lone Ranger is not a short film, and in certain parts in the plot development seemed a little long. Also, for most of us who are familiar with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Tonto looked quite familiar to the pirate we all know and love, with the most significant differences being Tonto’s warpaint and the bird which the Indian wears atop his head. Lastly, as I mentioned earlier, the story is recollected by a wizened Tonto looking back on his adventures with the man who became The Lone Ranger. While I can see why this was done for effect, rather then adding to the movie I felt this detracted from the power of the story, and watered down the punch the final scene of  The Lone Ranger could have delivered as the conclusion. Throughout the movie the story was interrupted by scenes with the present day Tonto, and the audience was intermittently yanked back and forth from past to present, which gave scenes bordering these a disjointed feel.

Overall I thought The Lone Ranger was an excellent modern rendition of a classic tale and an entertaining action adventure fit to put outlaws and rangers back on my summer movie radar.

Sherwood Photoshoot

I recently moved into the northwest community of Sherwood. I went around for a bike ride with my buddies and couldn’t help but take some pictures. This proves that every neighborhood has an inner Banff.
