CHARTER OF QUEBEC VALUES Part II: L’Heritage du Québec

0
The National Assembly of Quebec. The centre of power of the Province of Quebec.

With the proposed Charter of Quebec Values, many ask why would such a Charter be needed in Quebec or Canada for that matter. Our government promotes cultural identity and religious identity as something each individual is entitled to, but some say that the Charter totally goes against that sacred right. The history of Quebec could shed some light to the point of view to those in favour of the new Charter.

Oratoire Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal in Montreal, Canada’s largest church. The province of Quebec’s French heritage gave reason for Quebec’s strong Catholic heritage. The Catholic Church held strong influence in Quebec until the end of the Quiet Revolution.

Secularism is something dear to many Quebecois. Primarily being, that the province wasn’t always so inviting to religious freedoms. During the 1960’s, this was a period in Quebec that was built around the Catholic church. The province was under strong influence by the church. From the education system to the businesses and natural resources, all was controlled by the Catholic church. The state and the church weren’t separate entities during the time and the entire province, especially the rural areas, were extremely unmodernised.

Father of the Quiet Revolution, 19th Premier of Quebec, and Former Leader of the Quebec Liberal Party, Jean Lesage.

The collective Quebec mentality during the time grew tired of the oppressive rules of the church and pushed for the separation of the two powers. This era became known as, the Quiet Revolution or La Révolution Tranquille. The sweeping changes created a state owned society rather than religiously based one. The education system was secularised, welfare was instated, government control over national resources and the maîtres chez nous philosophyand the official statement of the separation of church and state. After the revolution ended, the church was nearly left powerless compared to the state it had before.

This sparked a new sense of nationalism and collective identity of the Quebecois. A nationalism that would later push for the Separatist movement which would push Canada into an era political turmoil. Many Quebecois treat the Quiet Revolution as something sacred because of the good things it did for Quebec. It modernised and liberated the Quebec province. These feelings towards the church and the state with the sentimental feelings towards the Revolution, many Quebecois translate this to the Charter of Quebec Values.

There is growing support within the province for such a Charter. Some may agree due to the fact that many Quebecois see religion as something that oppressed them. Religion held the province back from being modern, and to those who wear religious garments, they ask why do the choose to allow religion to oppress them. Some Quebecois see the Charter as liberating people from their religious oppression. This revolutionary spirit is one that drives  some supporters of the Charter.

Some supporters believe that some religious garments as a violation of human rights. The equality of man and woman and fair treatment of all men are things that run deep in Quebec heritage. Quebec’s history of being a progressive province makes some Quebecois feel that it is the government’s duty to ensure that all peoples respect this, and any form of violation of these rights must be terminated. Some Quebecois interpret the equality of genders and peoples as one that borders religious means.

The Charter seeks to create a “state neutrality” in terms of religious affairs. Meaning that it doesn’t want to show support or promotion of one belief over the other. Canadian politics believes in state neutrality but also supports people’s religious beliefs such as publicly announcing congratulations of a religious holiday or allowing religious events to take place in public areas.

Quebec Premier, Pauline Marois, giving a press conference talking about her party’s proposed Charter of Quebec Values. MACLEANS

How would Ms Pauline Marois achieve such a “neutral state.” Simple, ban all religion from public institutions. Easy enough, but Ms Marois believes that even the representatives, they too must be banned of religious convictions. Simply, no religious clothing allowed. She is quoted to say during an interview, “If people want to wear signs on the street, that’s not my problem, but when you’re serving the state it will have to be clear: The state is neutral … the people who serve you don’t want to influence or embarrass you by openly and clearly expressing their convictions.”

The arguement being that, wearing religious garments is considered relgious propaganda. This propaganda described is loose in definition. The belief being held is that, by wearing religious clothing, you are forcing others who have to see you, to convert others to your faith. One of the Charter’s greatest supporters is the, Mouvement laïque québécois. An organisation that seeks the secularisation of society. The president of the organisation stated in regards to opposers, “If they want to integrate themselves, they should accept the laws of the community.”

Premier Pauline Marois and Quebec Minister of Democratic Institutions, hold the proposed Charter of Quebec Values. MONTREAL GAZETTE

Though, unlike English Canada, who strongly opposes the proposed Charter, there is a majority support within the province of Quebec. According the recent poll taken by a group of Quebecois, 68% of the province seems to support the proposed Charter. Though, the Charter debate also holds sentimental value for many Quebecois as Christian Bourque mentioned. The vice-president of the polling firm Léger Marketing had a sympathetic view for the Charter’s supporters, saying, “Quebecers got out of a period of fairly religious austerity for many years and sort of wanted to liberate themselves, so basically whenever they see the expression of religious symbols, it’s almost as if [they’re asking] ‘Why don’t you liberate yourself from that?'”

The Charter of Quebec Values shows that the issue is much more deeply rooted than what people think. Quebec’s history with religion and the liberation and separation that came along with it. The Quiet Revolution still affects modern day Quebec society. Some critics see this as potentially divisive as the Charter of the French Language that was introduced at the start of the new millennium. A schism has been created with the Parti Quebecois’s plan for their vision of a secular society. Though, one thing is ensured, this Charter will cause massive debates between both sides.

Walk the streets of Montreal through photography

0
“To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson

Why taking pictures is a crime

Tourists gather under the magnificent structure in the light drizzle, heads tilting upward, staring at the little screens held tightly in their hands; a few already snapping away the moment: they are under the Eiffel Tower! Big Ben! The Statue of Liberty! Taj Mahal! Those mechanical devices blinked at the command of a button even under the grey, weeping skies – but au contraire to the tourists’ beliefs, their eyes are cold and emotionless. They are capturing their moment; they are not living the moment. They are blind to the life that surrounds the magnificent structure, the tiny moments of joy that go unnoticed under such callous movements.

“I don’t think we did go blind, I think we are blind. Blind, but seeing, Blind people who can see, but do not see.” – Jose Saramago, Blindness (photo source: Tumblr)

Finding the meaning behind photography

Travel photography often becomes a contest of who can capture Big Ben at the best angle, only with varying backgrounds of colour. There is the tendency to capture landmarks of interest, cropping out the rest that makes the moment a living reality. Certainly – proceed with the act, but never ignore the slivers of insight into what it means to be a Londoner, to live in such a metropolis.

Arriving in Montreal for vacation, I simply loved how every street surrounding the notable sights filled with exuberance in its architecture and history. There was no end to anecdotes in even the smallest of coffee shops. One curious singularity of the cosmopolis was the staircases that led from the inhabitants of the fairytale-esque buildings onto the streets. Photography is not about capturing great buildings and amazing landscapes. In that moment, it was about giving in to the alluring siren calls of the handsome iron staircases. It was about finding the Wonderland in normality.

The back alley way was a world of its own: embellished with artistic graffiti, the dignified walls stood their ground, laced with spiralling stairwells onto the second floor. Here, we could see glimpses into others’ lives. Was it sparkling with adventure, like the glowing palm tree figure to our right? Or was it in the darkest abyss, a corner forgotten by the warm embrace of the streetlights? Could it be quirky, much like the tattoos of the walls themselves? Only a small glimpse – that was all we needed for a deep impression of the Parisian-themed city, bustling with charismatic nightlife.

Here are some shots of these wondrous staircases – enjoy! L1030333

Red velvet cookies take the cake for any occasion

0

I love red velvet. Of course, there’s red velvet cake and cupcakes, but my craze has lead me to other Closeupredvelvcookievariations of this delicious, velvety treat, from red velvet donuts to red velvet ice cream. So when I saw Cooking Classy’s recipe for simply amazing looking red velvet cookies, I had to try them out.

The great advantage to red velvet cookies over red velvet cake is the time it cookiemonstervelvettakes to make each. By far, cookies are way simpler and way less time consuming. Since I wanted to take something for my friends for back to school, this combined with the portability of cookies made them a great idea. Needless to say, these cookies were a hit, and I had to bring more back the next day. Luckily, I found this recipe made lots (over a dozen!) and I had enough to go around.

These cookies were straight forward to make and turned out soft and chewy. The white chocolate chips were the perfect look-a-like for cream cheese frosting and the cookies were very picturesque. I’ll definitely be whipping up a batch of these come Valentine’s Day.

If you love red velvet, these cookies are for you! They definitely have the red velvet look and taste. The only change I’d make to this recipe is really more of a modification, and for those creative bakers, I’d suggest trying it. Make each cookie smaller, about macaroon size or maybe a little smaller. Then once they’re cooked put a dollop of cream cheese icing in between the middle of two cookies to make mini red velvet whoopie pies. Definitely the cookie concept I’m trying next!

The iPhone 5C and 5S: A Double Whammy

Holiday shopping season is quickly approaching, and that means new iPhones from Apple. Apple has followed its annual tradition of releasing a new iPhone since the first one was released in 2007, but this year they had a little surprise: two new iPhones. The new models will be the plastic coated iPhone 5C and the flagship iPhone 5S, both coming with the previously introduced iOS 7. The iPhone 5C will be aimed at increasing Apple’s presence in the mid-ranged smartphone market, while the 5S will look to continue their success at the premium market.

iphone2013-0140

The iPhone 5C will be available in multiple colours: green, blue, yellow, blue, white and red. The plastic shell made with hard-coated polycarbonate with a steel frame backbone. As this is the first plastic coated iPhone released by Apple, it will be interesting to see its quality and durability. The rest of the phone is very similar to last year’s iPhone 5: same 4 inch 1136×640 display, A6 processor, 1GB of RAM and an 8MP iSight Camera. It will be available on September 20 in Canada and 8 other countries for $129 CDN on a two year contract, with many more countries to come later.

The premium iPhone 5S has been update with a new A7 chip, which Apple claims to be twice as fast as the A6 chip, both in processing and graphics. The A7 is a 64-bit chip, which means it will support new instruction sets(similar to desktop processors). There is also a M7 chip built in, that works alongside the A7 to continuously measure motion data from the phone’s sensors. This will open up new possibilities in health and fitness apps, such as Nike+ Move.

iphone2013-0205

Along with the interior upgrades, the iPhone 5S also gains a improved camera, with a wider f/2.2 aperture and a new TrueTone flash to improve photography in low-light conditions. A really interesting new feature exclusive to the 5S is the Touch ID sensor, which is a digital fingerprint scanner built into the home button. It allows you to unlock your phone, make online purchases simply by placing your thumb on the sensor. There will also be a slew of new opportunities with fingerprint scanner, especially in the area of mobile commerce. Apple has also added a new colour for the 5S, gold in addition to the previously available white and black (now called “space grey”). The iPhone 5S will be at similar price points as previous years: $229 CDN on a two year contract.

Will you be picking up one of the new iPhones? Or will you be sticking with the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One? Let us know!

Fotor091212207

As summer draws to a close, the cold air starts creeping and the leaves begin to fall. Autumn is here! For many that means pumpkin pie near a warm fireplace drinking orange pekoe tea whilst enjoying a favourite book. That’s just one type of person. For more of us who have to stay in the loop, Autumn signifies not only the start of a new school year, but also the start of new quarter of films that Hollywood has churned up. Summer 2013 hasn’t been a great season for films, but Autumn seems to be more promising. Here’s my top six upcoming films of Autumn 2013.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

For those geeks out there who just can’t get enough of the Marvel universe or for those who are dying to know the mystery that surrounds The Avengers. Meet your sequel, well kind of a sequel. It picks up the days after the ending of The Avengers as Thor tries to battle the alien beings that invaded Earth. And with every Marvel film that comes out now a days, expect great graphics and fancy costumes. Thor battles an alien race called the Malekith, a vicious race that seeks to darken the universe. Watch as Thor uses his signature hammer to lighten up the darkness. Get it, lightning, darkness. Okay fine… I thought it was funny.

November 8

HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

The widely anticipated cult film has finally came. For those Hunger Games fanatics who are “hungry” for the sequel to the first novel to come out, then the wait is almost coming to a close. In the second chapter of the Hunger Games series, we continue our journey with Katniss as they tour Panem on their victory tour with Peeta. With President Snow fearing over the growing rebellious spirit within the citizens, he introduces the Quarter Quell. For those who thought that the Games themselves were gruesome, the Quarter Quell makes the other games seem like child’s play. It’s promised to be more suspenseful and gruesome than the first.

CHARTER OF QUEBEC VALUES Part I: La Charte des Valeurs Québécoises.

0
Premier Pauline Marois and Minister of Democratic Institutions Bernard Drainville hold up the proposed Charter of Quebec Values. CTV News

http://youtu.be/JbVXHGmnlvw

New legislative action in La Belle Province could cause another rift and alienation within Canadian society. The Charter of Quebec Values is a planned charter by the current Parti Québécois government. A similar situation occurred in the beginning of the summer. With the Premier’s blessing, the Quebec soccer authority banned turbans from all official soccer tournaments. This caused outrage and debate on a national level. Along with external pressure, the ban was lifted and most Canadians thought this was the last act of identity conflicts in Canada.

Then came along the Charter of Quebec Values. This makes that little soccer ban a walk in the park compared to what would come later along the year. Under the leadership of Pauline Marois and the Quebec Minister of Democratic Institutes,  Bernard Drainville, the Charter would make sweeping changes to Quebec society.

Religious clothing that would be exempt from the Charter would be small and discrete crosses or religious jewellery. Religious clothing that would be banned in public institutions would be oversized crosses, hijabs, turbans, burqas, niqabs, and kippahs.

In an essence, the Charter would ban all public employees from wearing oversized or visible religious clothings in respect to secularism. This type of secularism rings to the French version of secularism, laïcité. Laïcité roughly translates into secularism, but also doesn’t considering that it holds stronger value. Laïcité believes in pure separation between church and state, meaning, government cannot support anything religiously related such as religious schools or expression in governmental offices.

Many see parallels to the ban of religious garments in France to the situation of Quebec. But unlike France where there was unanimous support from the public, the division for those in favour to such a law and those against are much stiff and rigid. A division begins to take place within Canada. A division that hasn’t been seen since the Quebec 1995 referendum.

Two Muslim girls wear the Quebec flag as a headscarf showing their pride of being Quebecois during a protest in Montreal opposing the Charter of Quebec Values. CANADA.COM

What truly causes issues with most people is the importance of these religious garments. Many religious clothing such as a crucifix, a turban, and a hijab aren’t always optional for many religions. There is an obligation that must be fulfilled by certain religions. The relation with the clothing extends to oneself but goes to the connection with someone and their God. For many people who choose to wear these religious garments, it begins to define them. They begin to identify with the pieces of cloth. For many, forcing someone to remove their religious garment is like forcing them to relinquish their culture or skin colour.

Public support for secularism is unanimous throughout Canada. Many people, religious and non religious, strongly believe that secularism in Canada is essential to Canada’s state of freedom and strengthens Canada’s multicultural identity. Without a state religion, people are free to practise whatever faith they choose. Though, what the Charter of Quebec Values, it suggests that the government must extend the secularism not just to the institutions, but also the individual.

In this five part series, I will explore the Charter of Quebec Values from the roots of conception to the future of the province and Canadian multiculturalism. Look for part 2 tomorrow.

Utilizing water, the dynamics of nature in photography

The spring of life offers a wealth of beauty along with it’s essential role in our survival; water is deserving of the focal point when taking photos that involve it. Being adaptable, the flow can invoke excitement and tranquility at the same time. On the Labour Day weekend, I headed out to Bow Falls and Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park and ended up grasping how water is a dynamic force. Let the photos explain:

Judging a Facebook by its cover

0

Facebook, apart from being an informal networking website, is also emerging as a “personality check platform.” It’s not all so uncommon for us to go and search up a person we just met, look at his posts, his pictures, etc. and make judgement about his personality. Nowadays, even the corporate world relies on Facebook. The interviewer often views the interviewee’s Facebook profile to have a personality background. Such is the influence and role of Facebook in our lives!

With Facebook profiles becoming the basis of our judgements, it allows for a very wide gap between perception and reality. A person’s Facebook profile may look very mature and sensible, but in reality that person may just be the character foil of his/her own Facebook profile! Thus Facebook is now seen by many as a tool to showcase the personality they want to have instead of their true selves. Thus we should all be aware of those gaps and not base our judgement on mere Facebook profiles.

There are times when in-person meetings are inadequate to judge an individual’s personality, and here we are trying to judge them on mere Facebook profiles; by doing this, we may or may not come up with appropriate judgments, but what we certainly do is show our shallow thoughts and immature ideas, as if trying to prove the older generations (who label us as shallow thinkers) right!

Flavours of the YYC food trucks

0

IMAG0419To put it simply, my family and I are food truck obsessed. So when two food truck events were happening in one weekend, of course we were there for both of them. On Sept 6 was the 2nd Annual Sundown Chowdown at the Calgary Farmers’ Market. The event featured various food trucks along with entertainment and the Calgary Food Bloggers Bake Sale! Second was Taste the Trucks III, which was actually a two day event running from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday in East Village.

Obviously, there’s no sane way to try every food truck in one weekend, but with the help of my parents, I sampled quite a few culinary concoctions from quite a few various trucks.

Farm GirlsCreamy old cheddar, truffle & butternut squash MAC & CHEESE!

Cheese is one of my obsessions. And I absolutely adore squash. Oh, and there was a bacon topping too. And it was mac and cheese. So I went crazy over this. Essentially, it was a little box of gourmet goodness. The pasta was those spirally-tube things rather than the average elbow macaroni, and the texture was given an extra kick because of all the toppings. Yummm.

IMAG0417

Cheezy Bizness:  Aloha Arkansas (In-truck made pulled pork with pineapple and smoked cheddar)

As you learned above, cheese holds a special place in my heart. So it was natural that I had another cheese-dominated entree. Cheezy Bizness is the king of grilled cheese, and they definitely do it right. The perfectly-grilled bread and oozing melted cheese is complimented perfectly by the tangy pulled pork and pineapple. All in all, a taste sensation.

IMAG0416

Jane Bond Mongolian Grill: Three sliders, and mango bruschetta

This one was my mom’s order, and so I actually didn’t try any of the sliders. But I will say that they looked really good from head to toe (even the buns seemed special and delicious). However, I did steal some of the mango bruschetta. The addition of sweetness and fruitiness to the average bruschetta was much appreciated by me, so it was a hit, although a bit spicier than I’d prefer.

IMAG0423

SteakOut: Steak bites!

I’ll be honest here, I was skeptic about just bites of steak. My dad got this because he is really steak-obsessed, and I ended up trying a bite. The flavour was intense, and much more interesting than just biting into your normal hunk of steak. Smoky, sweet, perfect.

Perogy BoyzTex-mex perogies (8 perogies, sausage, cheese, black bean/corn salsa)

There is something about mashed potatoes encased in dough and topped with cheese that is way too good to be true. Luckily, Perogy Boyz is here to serve up this dish from heaven. Especially when it’s raining and not-so-warm outside, eight chewy and soft and doughy perogies sure hit the spot. Many different varieties were offered, and I chose the new addition, Tex-mex, which meant I also ate sausage and black bean/corn salsa. Oh so good 🙂

IMAG0424

Fiasco GelatoThree flavours in one large: bananimal cracker, bourbon vanilla bean, and dark chocolate caramel sea salt

Um, this was gelato. The Italian version of ice cream. How could it not be insanely, phenomenally good? The flavours were all rich and obviously authentic, and you could definitely tell that this was gourmet frozen goodness.

So what are you waiting for?!?!? Got to yycfoodtrucks.com and start stalking these mobile eateries! NOW.

Why take French immersion?

1

For most of us, it is back to school time. For some people reading, it may be their last year of elementary, or maybe even their first year of junior high. If so, welcome to my blog, I am writing this mainly for you! I’m not going to write the standard back to school/welcome to junior high speech this week. You see, my school is a little bit different. I am in French immersion. I would have wrote about this sooner but this year is a little bit different; not only is it my last year of the program, it is my first year being in the same class as the kids that have been in the program since Kindergarten and that’s a little bit scary. If you take the late French immersion program, as I did, you start off in a small class of kids in the same boat as you. You don’t know much French, just the minimal stuff you learn in elementary school, and take all core subjects in French. So in three years you become fully fluent in the second official language of our country.

www.frenchdifference.ca

You may think I’m crazy, taking math, social, science AND language arts in French!  Well for starters I needed a challenge. School wasn’t very difficult for me in elementary – I wanted to do a little more. I think French is important to know; over 10 countries have French as their official language or one of their official languages, Canada included. And finally the  most important reason: it’s great for your future. Let’s say a university or an employer is choosing between two applications, yours and another person. Both of you are identical, except your competition doesn’t speak French – now you will be chosen rather than them. It doesn’t only just count if you are head to head with just one person; if you apply to somewhere and you speak French, sometimes you are bumped up ahead of all those other people who don’t and maybe even have better grades than you!

frenchI hope you can take all of this into consideration if you are entering junior high next year or you are looking for a change. Grades 6-7 is the only time you can enter the program within junior high; once you are past Grade 7 and you wish to enter, you must take a French test to see if you can fit in with the level  of the other kids. Since it is a very fast paced program, it is extremely difficult, but extremely rewarding. Especially in the long term because let’s face it, how many people do you know that can actually speak French fluently? Wouldn’t it be cool to be one of the few teens who can speak a second language?

Understanding LoL #4: Wards

0

Hello summoners! New to the game? Have no fear!

Understanding LoL (League of Legends) is a series of posts that I will create in the next few weeks talking about small aspects of the game rather than mechanics. This includes champions or items to buy. Today, we’re talking about wards.

League-of-legends-logo

Wards are one of the most important items in the game. They are place-able items that give vision in an area around it, allowing you to keep track of enemies moving in order to react accordingly.

Terminology:
Pink – To place a pink ward to reveal an enemy ward to destroy.
Sieging – Pushing with a group of your allies with the intent to destroy a tower.
Gank – To be ambushed.
Baron – Short for Baron Nashor, a strong monster you kill to gain a powerful buff for your entire team.

These are the available wards and ward items to buy (credit: from LoL wiki)

  • Sight Ward is the least expensive type of ward, which reveals all non-stealthed nearby units. (lasts 3 minutes and costs 75g)
  • Vision Ward is a ward that reveals all units nearby, including stealthed units. (lasts 3 minutes and costs 125g)
  • A Wriggle’s Lantern ward, created and placed by the activation of the aforementioned item. It has the same functions, characteristics and appearance of the Sight Ward. The item activation is unique and has a cooldown of 1.5 minutes. (2000g)
  • Sightstone wards. It has four charges, and may consume a charge to place a ward. Up to two wards from this item may be active at a time. (950g)
  • Ruby Sightstone wards. It has five charges, and may consume a charge to place a ward. Up to three wards from this item may be active at a time.  (1550g)

When should I ward?
1. The First 4-10 Minutes
It is important to ward at the beginning of the game because most Junglers (assuming the enemy team has a Jungler) will clear their entire jungle in about four minutes, meaning that they will be looking for a gank around four to five minutes.

2. The Last Stages of the Game (usually 35-50 minutes)
Due to the nature of late game, your turrets will most likely be destroyed, meaning that more of the map becomes unsafe for you to walk around with no vision (as you can randomly bump into enemies.) Also, your death timer becomes extended as your champion levels up, meaning the enemy team can capitalize harder on your death.

Where should I ward?

wardlocations

Glossary:
Red Arrows – Bot Lane Wards. The most important wards are the dragon ward, and the tri-brush ward.

Dark Red Arrows – Situational Bot Lane wards if you are being threatened by supports hiding in those bushes (usually Thresh or Blitzcrank.)

Green Arrows – Mid Lane Wards. The most important wards are the side brushes (ramps don’t cover everything), but the ramps are very good places to ward as well.

Light Green Arrow – Rarely used Mid Lane ward.

Pink Arrows – Baron and Dragon wards.  Note that you do not need to ward your own side for Baron, only the enemy side. Only ward over the wall if you feel like it will be stolen. The ramps are excellent to ward.

Purple Arrows – Top Lane wards.

Blue Arrows – Common places to ward when a turret has been taken. (Note that you ward depending on which turret has been taken. Top Jungle for Top Lane, Bot Jungle for Bot Lane, both for Mid Lane.)

Orange Arrows – Situational arrows. Base ones are for sieging (if you are being attacked from there), the Top Lane one is only for aggressive players who might attack you there.

When should I pink enemy wards?
When you want your lane to be open to ganks or you need to secure an objective such as Dragon but do not want the enemy team to try and steal it (it is much harder stealing an objective with no vision.) That means you will be pinking routes that allow easy access for the Jungler to gank or near the objective itself.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Always buy a ward or two for your lane. They help keep you safe throughout the entire game, and regular wards only cost 75g. Remember that you can kill 3 minions to make up the cost of a ward, so don’t think that you are wasting your money by buying it.

The masks we wear

1

Psychologist Carl Jung once stated that one of the most prominent archetypes in our dreams is the ‘visage’–a representation of the masks we wear everyday. How many of us can remain true to ourselves when facing peer pressure on a daily basis? We’re so conscious of other people’s opinions, we feel that we need constant confirmation that we are accepted, that we fit the norm. This insecurity, so often, had urged us to alter our demeanor in the face of others, all for the sake of our zealous need to fit in.

The question we don’t ask ourselves enough is ‘why not?’; why would those who matter to us not like us for our true selves? Shel Silverstein, a famous poetic and artist, asked the same question. The picture below is one of my favorites by Silverstein, an accurate depiction of our willingness to compromise our identity for the sake of conformity. What we don’t understand is the magnitude of impact this visage could have on us. “Sometimes you wear a mask for so long,  you forget who you were.”–V, V for Vendetta. Would it really be worthwhile to give up who you are to appease people that do not matter?

Masks, another beautiful piece by Silverstein, preaches to us the consequences of not being true to yourself. The poem tells us a story about two people who could potentially be soul-mates, but lost that chance by hiding behind their masks. To surround yourself with people who will understand you, you have to stand up against peer pressure, let them know that there is more to you behind that mask.

The Timelapse Tales: Around a Snow Globe

1

I admit that snow gets boring fast (and I mean really fast), but the fascination never seems to die down when a snow globe captures the gaze of so many. The deep freeze may not seem picturesque, This creative touch of enchantment gave the urban winter a sense of vibrancy that makes it an equally exciting season to be waiting for. You know it, find other impressive timelapses here. 😀

To be or not IB, that is the question

Is IB right for you?

Being a recent graduate of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, I simply could not escape the malevolence that the IBO has shadowed over my life: living memories of sleepless days (feeling one’s body turning stone-cold, eyelids accelerating downwards at 9.81ms-2 whist trying to recite Shakespeare’s plays without noticing the frighteningly similar analogy between Othello’s tragic hero cycle and one’s own life), grueling, aneurism-inducing exams shriveling one’s cerebrum (the incessant reminder that one is to only spend 1-2 minutes per question pounds with the force of atomic bombs upon one’s thoughts – the test is almost over!); not to mention the flood of endless assignments that will determine the rest of your already-miserable future…

My advice to you is: do NOT stop reading there.

Most articles about the International Baccalaureate Programme entail something of that nature, as if high school will turn into a dark abyss once one enters the black hole that is the gates of the IBO. While some of that is true (though at times exaggerated), I, as a survivor of the Plague, cannot help but notice the improvement I’ve made in my classes I would not have otherwise and the relationships built in the small world of IB students at school.

These are just some things I’ve learned through personal experience in the program.

THE PROS

  • (source)

Understanding of Material: Having just finished my first week of university, I found that the IB curriculum not only covers a lot of the concepts in first- and second- year courses, but it forces one to understand the material to a more in-depth extent. This propels one forward in front of others in terms of academics.

  • Learning: The IB curriculums being heavy in information, one will develop skills to learn more efficiently. Whether it is for post-secondary (where lectures proceed at a fast pace) or occupational commitments, the skill is of immense importance.
  • Relationships: Most high schools in Calgary only have a few IB teachers per subject. This means more interaction with teachers over a two- or three-year period. As well, one’s classmates are most likely to stay consistent, which means more opportunities to socialize and develop more meaningful relationships.
  • Preparation for Post-Secondary: As I mentioned under Understanding of Material and Learning, IB courses serve as a really great preparation for post-secondary. Especially if you’re already thinking about law school, medical school, or graduate studies, it is a great way of boosting your chance of getting a high GPA. (Note: be aware of advanced-standing credits and what it means for your post-secondary program).
  • Teachers (varies from school to school): We all know there are good and bad teachers – no need to keep it hush-hush. This factor depends entirely upon one’s high school, but IB teachers generally know what they’re doing; if they don’t, they’re at least somewhat knowledgable about the subject. And, if the end of the rainbow doesn’t have a pot of gold, they’re obligated to give you access to the information you need for the course (which is close enough to the the pot of gold). Self-learning isn’t necessarily a bad thing, after all.

THE CONS

Correction: students' issues [with the IB Programme] (source)

  • The Workload: The assignments associated with IB courses, again, depend on the teacher teaching the course. The assignments needed to be handed into the IB for marking/moderation (Extended Essay, Internal Assessments, labs, etc.), however, are mandatory and usually entail several components. To manage all of academics and extracurricular work together takes time; and even with the passing of time, it is still hard to balance one’s life and priorities. Just be ready for the large workload.
  • The IB Exams/Assignments: The IBO has a notorious reputation for being unforgiving. I attest to that. Exams are all evaluated with strict marking guides with little leeway. So even if your answer was right – for example, on a biology exam – but did not include the terminology IB is looking for, say good-bye to your marks. The mark band (from 1 to 7, 7 being the highest) is a pain as well. Speaking from personal experience (as known as agony), I was off the 7 mark by one mark on the IB exam. This lumps me into the 6 category, along with the people who got 70s and 80s. But to be honest, once you move past your high school career, those marks are essentially meaningless.
  • The IB Exam Fees: Yes, it’s expensive. Very expensive.
  • Relationships: While one does get to spend a longer time with the same group of people, it is hard to know other people in one’s high school, especially if one is in the Diploma Programme.

WHAT TO DO

  • Research: Know what you’re getting yourself into. Know what is expected of you. I’m a terrible example of this, because I had absolutely no idea what the IB Programme was about going from junior high into high school (so, what are IB Exams again?) Knowing the requirements, you would be better to prepare yourself mentally and academically. Also, the IBO likes shaking things up from year to year – whether it be the curriculum or assignments or what constitutes the difference between Diploma and Certificate students – so make sure you are reading an up-to-date document.
  • Extracurriculars: This pertains to the component that is required of Diploma students: CAS. Though known for its atrocity, it is really not that gruelling if you spread your extracurriculars out over the two years. Go volunteer every weekend. Join the school athletics team. Leaving it to the last minute is constructing your own guillotine and does not uphold the true intent of CAS. You’ll find yourself loving your extracurriculars even if it is time-consuming at times (no, really!) The requirement is only 150 hours in total and I ended up with more than 500 hours of extracurricular activities just by volunteering each weekend and joining clubs at school.
  • Study… regularly: Yes, it actually helps you absorb the material better than cramming. Read the section on procrastination below.

…and WHAT NOT TO DO

  • Procrastinate: Other than being known for peculiar eccentricities, IB kids win the Nobel Prize for procrastination. When one is constantly tired, there is a very strong tendency to do useless things and waste time (read a post on how to avoid this). However, I found that 95 per cent of the work I finished early earned a high mark. Get your stuff done beforehand!

I hope this gives a little insight into the IB Programme. Of course, each student would have a different experience with it, so do not be going into the program thinking it will be the same as someone else’s experience. The best is to research, listen to advice from your friends and family, and, ultimately, decide for yourself whether it is worth it or not.

After all, to be or not IB… that is the question.
