5 tips for mastering back to school stress

0

1. Stay Organized

If there’s anything that sends a student’s course-load spiraling out of control, it’s disorganization. By keeping a stock-photo-many-old-books-combined-by-a-heap-113595094few key components organized at all times, it is much easier to stay in control and stress-free. Keep your notes and binders tidy and organized by date and topic, when it comes time to write a test the materials you need to do well will all be in one place. To stay organized on a day to day basis, invest in a day planner, make lists, or use the calendar app on your phone to keep track of test dates, assignments, and extra curricular activities. Not only will this stop you forgetting to start your English paper prior to the night before it’s due, but also help you in balancing all the activities you may be juggling this semester. The last organizational tip may be the simplest, yet hardest to do, depending on your course-load. Staying on top of day to day assignments and studying for tests is a great organizational tool for beating stress, while staying on top of your class-work.

2. Live Healthy

Leading an active and healthy lifestyle is also a great way to reduce stress. Eating three nutritionally balanced meals astock-photo-young-people-group-of-women-and-men-doing-sport-spinning-in-the-gym-for-fitness-123602794 day will improve your concentration, mood, and ability to learn. While sleeping for about eight hours each night will also help improve your moods, especially in relieving stress and tension, it also will improve your clarity, improving scholastic performance. Lastly, regular exercise is shown to also reduce stress as well as enhancing overall health and well being. At least 30 minutes of exercise is recommended daily.

3. Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance

While focusing on school, volunteering, and maybe having a part time job on the side is an important part of teenage life, as well as setting the stage for one’s future, its important to remember to make time for friends, family, and fun- maintaining an antiquate work-life balance. Not only will this keep your life fun and social throughout the school year, making time for the fun side of life will help reduce stress, giving your brain and body time to relax and unwind from daily stressors.

stock-photo-exhausted-businesswoman-having-a-headache-1281138534. Know When Your Plate is Full

While its great to have goals of doing well in school, having countless volunteer hours, as well as having a job on the side, and whatever other aspirations you may have in mind, you need to know when enough is enough- before you reach your “breaking point.” Admitting that you’ve taken on too stock-photo-a-checklist-on-a-wooden-clipboard-with-the-word-career-and-the-top-priorities-for-your-to-achieve-138183725much and laying off on what you feel is least important to you is better then waiting until you’ve completely broken down, or simply overwhelmed yourself later on down the road.

5. Prioritize

Even when you follow all of these tips; keeping yourself organized, living healthily, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and  not overwhelming yourself, there will be times when life simply throws more at you then is possible to do. It is times like these when it becomes crucial to examine what needs to be done and decide what comes first and is more important- prioritize. Even though you may not get everything you wanted to done, you’ll finish what was most important.

Gut infection: The secret to staying lean

0

render05-dig

No more of those dubious infomercials or any of those tireless workouts on your thigh buster! Can you believe that the most illustrious secret that we have all wanted to know for staying lean may rest in the microbes of our gut? Well it has yet to be tested in humans, however, for mice, it is a different story.

In a recent experiment involving inducing mice with gut microbes from thin people, it has been found that these microbes were able to spark the metabolism of the induced mice. Over the years, scientists have discovered that leaner people have different microbes in their intestines than obese people. These studies have conjured up scientists to manufacture the idea of fecal transplants for these particular microbes, in hopes of clearing unpleasant bowel habits and increasing the insulin level for the obese population. However, feces can have another array of unwanted bacteria and microbes for this process.

These miraculous “skinny” microbes are contagious, so you may be asking, why do we not have a skinny epidemic? The answer to that question is the importance of diet. Even in the injected mice, the microbes could not fend off of a consistent diet of fatty foods. Thus, these mice still gained weight from an unhealthy diet. Although the mice gained less weight than the mice injected with the obesity microbes, the solution to being lean still lies within diet.

Having the right type of microbes may not totally transform an organism’s weight, but it is definitely a helping hand to our metabolism. But aside from gut microbe transfusions, the secret to staying lean still remains in the contents of our stomach; we are what we eat.

Should you get a dog?

Thinking about getting a dog? There are a few things you need to know first.

cutepuppies

Firstly, dogs require work and can be expensive, so you need to make sure you are prepared and you are choosing the right breed. This is because different breeds have different energy levels and some can require up to and hour of walking each day – sometimes more. Here is a list of dog breeds with information on each: http://www.justdogbreeds.com/all-dog-breeds.html

There are a few negatives of owning a dog but every dog owner will have a different opinion.

  • Puppies may cry and might want to be let outside in the middle of the night
  • Dogs can be expensive, mostly due to vet bills
  • Potty training your dog, as well as obedience training, can be difficult
  • Some dogs may require large amounts of walking and will be restless and unhappy without it

Owning a dog can be a very nice experience if you have the resources required to own one.

  • Owning a dog can be very fun, as you can take your dog with you to many places, like hiking
  • If you enjoy walking and jogging, a dog is a perfect companion as they can jog with you
  • Your dog may sit with you while you do a household activity like laundry, watching TV, or eating

If you do plan on owning a dog I recommend you take a look at adopting a dog, like from the Calgary Humane Society. Before making your final decision, make sure you do some research.

Biking at Barrier Lake: A photographic journey

0

Long weekends call for adventure (or at least that’s what I think). My mom and I took advantage of our days off and headed out to Kananaskis, where we spent two nights. The first day, after lunch at Boundary Ranch, we headed over to Barrier Lake for a bike trip. The trail we took was 4 km each way, so a total of 8 km, but hills and rocky terrain made it a fairly strenuous ride, largely due to the fact that it was HOT outside. If it wasn’t for the pack covering my back, I’d probably be red and sunburned all over!

For those of you that have not been there before, Barrier Lake is a beautiful lake about an hour away from Calgary. On busy days (such as Labour Day weekend, when I was there), crowds of people fill the parking lot. But if you rent a kayak/canoe, lace up your hiking shoes, mount a horse, or jump on your bike, serene nature awaits you.

Now, photos to get you inspired (and hopefully get you outside and active!)…

American company to monopolize a modern necessity in Canada

0

Fair

Driving home from school one day listening to AM radio, an advertisement caught my attention. Apparently, a large US cell phone company is bringing their business to Canadian soil. Verizon, a giant US wireless company four times the size of Rogers, Bell, and TELUS combined, has officially intimidated the top cell phone companies in Canada.

My question is, why would such large businesses, even if they’re not as large as Verizon, be so worried about this new competitor? They have started many campaigns to encourage backlash and discourage potential Verizon customers.

I think it’s all to scare Canadians to make sure they don’t invest in this American powerhouse. I think this has less to do with benefiting Canadians and keeping our culture and more to do with making sure they don’t lose any revenue in the next year.

I find it difficult to feel any pity for the CEO’s of these large companies; maybe they will lose money, but does this mean they will be barely scraping by day after day to put bread on the table? Well, the annual salaries of the CEOs of Bell, Rogers, and Telus are $19,551,345, $13,687,699, and $1,360,000 respectively. They’re rich. I’m not so worried about them as much as the average worker of the companies. Will Bell, Rogers, and Telus have to start laying off people due to lost income? I really hope not, because the CEOs salaries suggest that there is more than enough money to go around. However, it is possible that Verizon will hire Canadian workers, therefore creating even more jobs than the ones lost.

I write this article to inform and increase awareness on the issue. I would also like for the youth of today to be critical of everything they hear and read; you need to research more about a topic before you form an opinion on it, which is what I did. Currently, my position is as follows: Let Verizon come if they want to come! As a consumer, of course I’d want the best rates for my phone and Internet, which I could not live without. Honestly, I think the rates of Rogers is ridiculously high, and Bell does not fall far behind it. Telus has been the best so far, but I would like to see what Verizon has to offer me.

The Timelapse Tales: Lake Louise’s Seasonal Transitions

0

As I was doing my post on Canada’s Parks Day, I found a photo of Lake Louise from a summer trip that reminded me how the lake’s emerald colour leave us mesmerized at how nature forms such a graceful scene. The beauty at its peak, however, only reveals itself as Spring (or really Summer) hits the rockies and the Winter ice layer cracks. This timelapse is from the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise‘s YouTube channel:

Understanding LoL #3: Last-Hitting

0

Hello summoners! New to the game? Have no fear!

Understanding LoL (League of Legends) is a series of posts that I will create in the next few weeks talking about small aspects of the game rather than mechanics. This includes champions or items to buy. Today, we’re talking about last-hitting.

League-of-legends-logo

Last-hitting is one of the most important mechanics in the game that you need to learn to play the game, let alone play it well. While you may gain XP from dying units around you, the only way you can earn gold is by actually getting the credit for a kill on a champion or a minion (other than passive gold gain.) Thus, the skill to last-hit is required because 90% of your income comes from last-hitting.

Terminology:
XP – Experience.
Skillshots – Abilities that require aiming to hit properly unlike point and click abilities.
CS – Creep Score. A count of everything that you’ve killed with the exception of champions and structures.

What is Last Hitting?
Last-hitting is essentially aiming to get the credit for killing something (usually minions or monsters) specifically by using your abilities or basic attacks.

How can I effectively Last Hit?
The most basic method of last hitting is simply standing there (using S) and refraining from auto-attacking, then right clicking (or A+left clicking) a unit when you sense that your auto attack or ability can kill the unit to get credit for the kill.

The more effective method of last hitting is not much harder to do. You simply just click around in the general vicinity of your character (say in a circle or left to right) to keep you mobile and “on your toes” until you can get the credit for the kill. This accomplishes two things:

1. It allows you to dodge skillshots more easily because you are constantly moving around
2. It keeps your head in the game because it gives you something to do and allows you to focus
3. It stops your champion from automatically attacking creeps

league2
Why should I Last Hit?
The reason why you should Last Hit comes in the form of auto-attacking, also known as the action of simply letting your champion attack something on his or her own.  You want to avoid auto attacking as much as possible (except in certain cases) because this pushes the lane, something that can turn horribly bad because of two reasons:

1. Pushing the lane leaves you vulnerable to ganks – ambushes that turn your lane into a 1v2 or 3v2 that will usually lead to your death
2. Pushing the lane can cause you to become over extended – giving your enemy more space to kill you

There are moments where pushing the lane is a good idea, but the general rule of thumb is that you should always last hit unless you encounter these scenarios which I will list down below shortly.

Another reason why you should Last Hit is because if you auto attack the minions, it will be more difficult to actually get the credit for the kill because you aren’t actually watching when your auto attack will get the kill – you’re just letting your champion attack freely. Without gold, which only comes from getting the last hit, you can’t buy items, which makes your champion extremely weak. Never underestimate the power of items.

images
When should I push?
Only push when you are safe. You are safe when you feel that you are not in danger of getting ganked or getting killed. Here are some scenarios:

a. You want a tower so you want as many minions on it as possible to tank and deal damage.
b. You want to deny your enemies CS by pushing to their turret (the turret will make it harder for them to last hit as the turret will automatically attack minions and potentially steal a last hit.)
d. You want to try and kill the enemy (auto attacking minions makes your minions stack up and have a larger wave. enemies who try and kill you will be attacked by this large wave of minions from pushing. Remember that minions are very, very strong early game and try not to take as much minion aggro/damage.)

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Always, always remember to last hit. If you are having troubles last hitting, simply create a custom game with bots and practice getting the last hit on minions. A good mark is 100cs by 15 minutes.

History:

The wonders of tea tree oil

0

My favorite aspect of tea tree oil lies in its aroma; tea tree oil possesses a piney, minty smell that instantly invigorates me even when I’m exhausted. Waking up is the most difficult part of going to school for me, but with my new homemade tea tree oil scented car freshener, I know I’ll be energized as soon as I jump in my car. But aside from its powerful fragrance, tea tree oil has many other uses as well. Have you considered incorporating tea tree oil into your daily routine? Some of its useful properties may prove to be important for you as well.

You can purchase tea tree oil from various locations including Lush, The Body Shop, and The Beehive. I recommend The Beehive because the tea tree oil they sell comes at a higher concentration than that of any other store I know. I find it’s easier to dilute strong essential oil than to use more of the weaker sort. Tea tree oil is sold at The Beehive at $12 per 10mL bottle.

Headache cure: This is a trick my grandma taught me when I was little. Simply dab a few drops of tea tree oil on your fingertips and use it to massage your temples.

Acne treatment: Add a drop of tea tree oil to your cleanser. Tea tree oil helps prevent oil build up and dry out acne, just be sure to keep away from the eye area.

Dandruff Prevention: Massaging a few drops of tea tree oil onto your scalp could help prevent and clear away dandruff. Use 2-3 times a week for optimum results.

And last but not least, let me tell you about me favorite car freshener scent. Depending on how strong you want the scent to be, use a small piece of fabric (preferably cotton) and anywhere from 2 drops of tea tree oil to soaking the whole sheet. Use a needle and thread to string up the fabric and tie it around the air vents or rear view window of your car. Say goodbye to drowsiness.

Gamestop Expo not to be missed

0

gamestopexpo2013_25556.nphdThe Gamestop Expo is an event that was started to show Gamestop store managers some new games and software from their partners. The expo occurs in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo center. This year, they opened the expo up for one more day for the public to enjoy. Electronic Arts, Activision-Blizzard, Sony, and Microsoft were a few of the vendors with their goods on display. I was lucky enough to get the chance to go to the Gamestop Expo. I would recommend this expo to anyone who likes video games because it is highly likely you will find at least one developer you would enjoy seeing.

Battlefield-41The expo allowed guests to play released and un-released games. I personally tried BattleField 4. The developers clearly tried to make it more realistic than previous versions of the game, with buildings being much more destructible and being able to counter getting stabbed. 1_mainI also tried the Formula 1 2013, featuring realistic controls. These controls contained a gear shifter, steering wheel and multiple pedals. The game was quite challenging making it worth buying the infrastructure used for the realistic controls. I would only recommend this game (and the infrastructure) to hardcore racing fans. BattleField 4 will be released on Oct 29 and Formula 1 2013 will be released on Oct 4.

maxresdefaultThe last two games I will talk about are both music/guitar games. First I tried the Rocksmith guitar game at the Ubisoft booth. At this booth a Ubisoft presenter quickly explained the game to me and guided me through it. The game contained the ability to quickly change your level on a number scale between 1-100. I slightly disliked this game to the lack of variety in songs and I believe the visuals will confuse new players, as it did for me. Rocksmith 2014 will be available in October 2013 for the PC.

972088_610324212313144_412764381_nThe second game I tried was Band Fuse. I began to play it and I enjoyed it so much more, because of the different visual displays of the notes I was required to play. The game was extremely easy to interpret and I constantly felt more comfortable with the controls. The scale on this game is the same but has a much more sensitive and realistic scale.

The Nintendo 2DS: The “Newest” DS Into the 3DS Family…

0

On Aug 28, Nintendo announced their latest, greatest, and newest gaming system to the Nintendo family. The Nintendo 2DS…!

Great. Before anyone asks, this is a REAL thing.

As you may have guessed from the name of this product, Nintendo has completely taken out the 3D function of their prior system, the Nintendo 3DS. They have also taken out the famous clamshell frame of DS systems, and instead built it to have a flat, thick, rigid exterior, similar to a fat-version of a Gameboy. The 2DS will be able to play 3DS games (without the 3D function) and regular DS games, (though it should be noted that the 3DS can do that as well)

So now you may be wondering why Nintendo took this puzzling step backward. Why take out the 3D function of their old system, which gave it a unique difference to other systems? Why take out the famous clamshell frame, when it was famous for it’s safety, and portability? Why do all this when a regular 3DS has all the functions of the 2DS and more? Why do all this? Well the answer lies in marketing.

2DSb

According to Nintendo, the “new” Nintendo 2DS will be approximately $130, about $40 cheaper than the latest 3DS. This is due to Nintendo taking out the 3DS function and the clamshell exterior from the 3DS to present the latest, cheaper alternative 2DS. Therefore with this move, Nintendo MIGHT be able to benefit. If a person is not really interested in the latest 3D technology, or dislike’s it, they no longer have to use that function, and can instead get a cheaper alternative that does everything else that a 3DS can. Maybe even with a better backwards capability system. Therefore, if you’re the type of person that doesn’t like the 3D function of the 3DS, the 2DS might look like a better choice.

If you want to get the 2DS, it comes out Oct 12th, which is also the same day that Pokemon X and Y are released. On that day we can see for ourselves whether or not people reply to the Nintendo 2DS as, “Great! I want one,” or “Get that thing out of my face.” I would personally shove away the guy that’s trying to sell it to me, as although the marketing scheme for this system seems fair, it only represents to me a system made by a company out of ideas. I just hope that Nintendo comes up with something better in the coming years.

As a personal note, to Nintendo; please show me in the near future, that the 2DS was just a simple marketing scheme, and that you have something better hidden in your corporate curtains. With upcoming next-gen consoles such as the X-Box One, and the PS4 on the rise, innovation is an even more important factor. I’ve loved your systems in the past, and will always be a fan of your staple game series.  Sincerely, a Nintendo fan.

Thanks for Reading!

Tips and resources on improving online reputation

0

A few months ago I posted a blog about Social media and your professional profile. It is important to recognize that employers will search for your name to ensure they are hiring someone who fits the company. Here are some more tips and websites that will help you improve your online profile.

Understand what results appear when searching your name

Go to Google, Bing, Yahoo or Personas to find out what the top results are when you type in variations of your first name (include country and city). If there is a page you would like to hide, try requesting Content Removal on Google’s Webmaster Tools page. More information regarding removal policies on Google can be found here and here. You can also be alerted for new search results on Google Alerts.

The Happy Truck that makes you happy

0

IMG_20130811_130444As we roll back into the school season, many of us are dreading the thought of classrooms, textbooks and most importantly, homework. During Marda Gras this year, I was able to try some of the Indonesian Food from The Happy Truck, one of the newest additions to the YYC Food Trucks lineup.

Happy Truck on Urbanspoon

Happy Truck serves mainly Indonesian food, and luckily I was able to pick up one of the Indonesian lemongrass chicken with coconut rice and acar salad before it was sold out. They serve many other dishes as well, namely Shrimps, Perogies and Sausages and more.

IMG_20130811_130141

IMG_20130811_130531

For $9.50, you get a full-sized plate that will be more than enough for most. There is a quite sizeable portion of tender chicken, along with a big chunk of coconut rice and some cucumber pieces. The coconut rice was flavoured to perfection, and it was still hot and steaming. The salad however, was a little to sour to for my taste, but it may suit those who are looking for some more flavour. I especially liked the chicken, which was tender and soft, with the right amount of lemongrass in it. Overall, this is not a bad buy and I would definitely recommend this to others.

Make sure you check them out at their website, Twitter and Facebook pages.

Service – 4/5 – There was a short lineup, but the lady was very friendly and I was served my plate within three minutes of ordering.

Food – 4/5 – While I may be a little picky on the flavouring, I think overall the plate was well done, especially the tender and juicy chicken pieces.

Value – 4.5/5 – $9.5 is on par with most of the food dishes these days. I did like that it had quite large portions, so I would give it a 4.5.

Food truck design – 4/5 – The food truck was a converted motorhome, with a brand new paint job. It is a catchy yellow colour, with some nice graphics on the outside.

Social rules when using a smart phone

0

man-using-smartphoneThese days, there’s no denying that smart phones are a part of our lives. It’s a huge part of our social system and the way we link to the world. However, there are some times where you need to put the phone down. Here are my social rules for using a smart phone.

  1. If you are on the street, use your headphones please! People might not want to know what movie are you watching or if you cleared the level on Candy Crush.
  2. If you are using your headphones, don’t turn the volume up too loud. If you are not afraid of hearing loss or getting hit by a car, that’s fine. Again, people around might be tired of listening to your stuff.
  3. Don’t pretend you are so focused on your movie or game, you can’t offer a seat on the bus for people in need.
  4. If you want to read news, download yours. Don’t lean and peek.
  5. If you want to take a picture of a something, others might want to as well. So, move over. Share the space.
  6. Nowadays, in the middle of a meeting, texting has become normal. However, can you please turn vibrate off before putting on the table. It can be scary for the people around you if your phone is vibrating.
  7. Control your phone! The vibrating noise is louder then you think. Silent is best.
  8. Phone running out of juice? Please ask earlier for your friend’s charger. Don’t wait until it’s 5%.
  9. Going out for lunch? Stop texting or Facebooking. It doesn’t actually feel that good for your friend if you are the only one doing it.
  10. Watching a movie? Phone OFF. Please. We don’t need your background music interrupting the climax.
  11. If you are in a vehicle and not alone, lower your voice please. Your friend’s and the fell0w passenger’s ears will feel better.

There could be way more on this list. This is just what me and my friends think. However, it’s just little things people have to pay attention to. If we all just look after it a little more, the change will come naturally.
