Kara is a robot designed with the single purpose of making our lives easier. She is capable of everything a human does and more. However, when the android accidentally expresses her ability to think and feel, she discovers the horrible truth about her existence. This video is absolutely beautiful, fully capable of bringing the viewer to tears. Quantic Dream, the creator of Heavy Rain, demonstrates their new motion capture technology that will be used in future games through this short film. The small details of Kara’s facial expressions displays a whole new level of gaming graphics, able to almost perfectly mimic human emotions. I feel that the realism in her expressions and emotions made it easy for the view to empathize with the dilemma presented in the video. Although, sadly, Kara will not be Quantic Dream’s next project, there is hope that they will make a full movie extending the plot of this short film.

Why you should never give up on something you love doing
Remember that dance class you always went to when you were little? Or perhaps was it art class? Sports practice? Science fairs? We all have left something behind in the past in order to make room for new activities; namely, school, work, and… school? Time just doesn’t allow it. However, comic artist Grant Snider illustrates why you should never give up on something you love doing in The Nature of Ambition:

Meet the most politically aware 12-year-old in the world
I am here today to show off one of the most youngest, politically-aware, individuals that I have ever seen.
Apparently finding out his information about politics from everyday forms of media such as TV, newspapers, and internet, this boy can express a great understanding of his own countries laws, and most importantly, can use his brain to actually think about them. Using his thoughts presented in this video, this 12 year old boy can clearly express the faults, and situation of his own country, that some real-life politicians can’t even do.
Makes you think of how most people in the west use their media, when the majority of us just take something like the internet for granted, and use it mostly as a form of entertainment. Ironically so, when media was originally used to be a convenient form of communication, to get people more educated about their world, and their local communities. This boy can really show, how simply reading media, and thinking about them, can form anybody into an intelligent, politically aware individual.
This is somewhat why I like blogging, where different people, with different perspectives, can present information and opinions about the world, then incidentally that information ends up to a boy in Egypt, that expresses his intelligent opinion about his country’s society to the world back.
I never knew I would say this, but I’m proud of you internet!
The Fox: a surprisingly hilarious, viral song
If you haven’t heard the song The Fox on YouTube, you have better go check it out now. It’s been out for only half a month but has gained a whopping 36 million views!
The Norwegian band, Ylvis, consisting of two brothers, creates comedy in their music through the use of either contrast or shock value. In this case, the beautiful harmonic melody is accompanied by simple, childish lyrics pondering the true sound a fox makes. There is no way to describe the hilarity in words, though. It is simply something that needs to be seen and heard.
I especially admire this song because it achieves humour without the use of profanity or course language! So rare it is to see anything that is able to do that these days! It is family friendly and suitable for all ages.
And yes, I will be blasting this song in the car driving 80 down Shaganappi, windows down and bass up 😉
CHARTER OF QUEBEC VALUES Part IV: Le Débat Public

On Saturday, September 14th 2013, a protest was held in Montreal to express their opposition to the proposed Charter of Quebec Values. The protest was pan-religious and featured people of different religious backgrounds. Though the Quebec Charter will be officially debated in the Quebec National Assembly, many Quebecois and Canadians expressed already expressed their views to such a charter weeks in advance.
Though many Canadians have expressed their voices in opposing such a Charter, the political landscape is much different in Quebec. Unlike the rest of the nation, most Quebecois support such a Charter. Strangely enough, the division doesn’t just cut between Quebec & Canada. The mayors of Montreal and the boroughs have all unanimously expressed their opposition to the Charter. Montreal being the most diverse within the province, would be the most affected by the Charter as most of the minorities living in Quebec reside in the Montreal.

Many politicians have been scrambling and Canadian politics has taken a halt due to the issue the Charter is creating. Minister of Multiculturalism, Jason Kenney, Liberal Leader, Justin Trudeau, and New Democratic Leader, Thomas Mulcair, have voiced their opinions denouncing Ms. Marois’s decision to ban religious garments in the public sector. The ban affects all government employees such as doctors, teachers, or day care workers.

Though there are supporters are prevalent, especially in the province of Quebec. The Public Sector Union, The Syndicat de la fonction publique et parapublique du Québec (SFPQ), applauds the government’s decision to ban religious clothing in the public sector. The SFPQ President, Lucie Martineau, is quoted to have said, “We’re obliged to keep our political opinions to ourselves, we want that extended to our religious opinions.” The federal sister of the governing Parti Quebecois, the Bloc Quebecois, stated their support to their provincial counterpart. The Bloc Quebecois, only having 5 members in the House of Commons, just lost another seat due to conflict of ideas. Maria Mourani, was the first Member of Parliament of Lebanese descent, got ousted from the Bloc because she thought that the Charter of their sister party would impose tensions between Quebec’s minorities and the mainstream society. After her expulsion, she stated to begin questioning her role in the Quebec sovereigntist movement. She is quoted to have said to press, “Whether they like it or not, they are discriminating against minorities. It has never been easy to convince people from ethno-cultural groups that the independence movement is inclusive. The signal here is not very encouraging,”

Regardless of the political conflict the Charter is causing on a Federal scale, it seems that down to the Provincial and Municipal scale, the voices are much more direct. The Mayor of Calgary, Naheed Nenshi, Canada’s first Muslim mayor said publically his opinion on the proposed act. He is quoted to reporters having said, “What I’m saying today is look, whether or not you’re a person who wears a turban or a hijab, if you’re uncomfortable living in a society that says people who wear turbans or hijabs should be excluded from certain jobs, come here. We’re happy to have you.” Even British Columbia Premier, Christy Clark, said during a press conference that, ” we’ll find every opportunity that we can to make sure we welcome diversity here.”

As the nation shows their furious or admiration to Ms Marois’s Charter of Quebec Values, some express the legality of such a Charter. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Canada states the religious, expression, and speech freedoms people have right to enjoy. Some critics of the Charter say that Ms Pauline Marois is merely creating a political distraction from the real problems happening in Quebec such as job creation, infrastructure improvements, and scandals within the construction industry and politicians. Others also would go so far to even say it’s part of a grander plan of alienating Quebec from the rest of a nation under a common cause. Polls suggest the sovereignty movement is declining and this could be a political stunt to create tensions between the province and the federal government.
The Charter of Quebec is undoubtedly a controversial issue in Canadian politics. Some see it as a rift with Canadian multiculturalism and what is acceptable in such a society. The public debate over the Charter continues to spread and sooner, one side will take action to the future of this proposed legislative schism.

CHARTER OF QUEBEC VALUES Part III: Les Minorités Religieuses du Québec

http://youtu.be/Ni6W0bZlrdY
Like most immigrant Canadians would often say when moving to Canada, they come here for freedom. Freedoms that their native country just doesn’t have. Here in Canada they find new livelihoods and in most situations, often feel more Canadian than their cultural background. Just like most major Canadian cities, Montreal has become a symbol of immigration. A haven that attracts members of all four corners of the globe to express themselves in whatever way they desire. But these sentimental feelings may suddenly change if the proposed Charter of Quebec Values takes effect.

http://youtu.be/FIF9mWX62Ig
The Charter would ban all public sector employees from wearing their religious garments during work hours. The ban though has an exception to Christian crosses that remain discreet and unnoticeable. This creates tensions between Quebec’s religious minorities and the government, because of feelings that the Charter purely targets minority religions. The Sikh turban, the Muslim hijab, and the Jewish kippah are just some of the few religious garments being banned by the proposed Charter.
The Parti Quebecois are accused by critics as introducing discriminatory and exclusive laws that could shatter Canadian diversity. The us vs them mentality is what opposers believe the Charter will enforce in Quebec society. Some say the government’s intentions in one sentence is to eradicate diversity in Quebec. Quebec wants you here, as long as you stay completely invisible, is what some believe the Charter is saying. Some analysts foresee the alienation of religious minorities into religious enclaves.
The clothing that Sikhs, Muslims, and Jewish people wear is sacred. Some of which is obligatory to wear in certain religions. Others, something as a promise to themselves and to their God, which no one could take away from them. It’s clear that the Charter is playing along the lines of Identity Politics. Many of those who choose to continue to wear their religious clothings even if the Charter gets enacted, promise to continue to fight for their religious rights.
The problem with Quebec society is the growing paranoia of loss of the Quebec nation. Most Quebecois feel that their culture is constantly under threat from external forces. Being the one of the few francophone nations in America, surrounded by prominent anglophone societies, Quebec feels isolated and different from the rest of Canada and North America for that matter. Government action was enacted to preserve Quebec cultures. Most popularised being the Charter of the French Language, commonly known as Bill 101. Bill 101 is a controversial piece of Quebec politics as it preserves the French language with the ban and discouragement use of the English or non-French language.

Immigrants who don’t speak French nor English are called allophone within the Quebec society. This division between anglophones, francophones, and allophones create Quebec society by many outsiders as racist and exclusive. Now, with the new proposed Charter coming into way, many immigrants will continue to feel stronger alienation within Quebec society.

This Charter most notably bans all religious items in governmental and public institutions. Yet, what most Quebecois forget is the strong cultural influence religion gave Quebec. From the profanity to the names of streets, religion is something of daily lives. What really angers critics of the Charter is the Charter’s push for secularism yet it protects Quebec’s Catholic history. Muslim women who wear the hijab will be barred from their jobs, but the crucifix standing in the Blue Chamber of the Quebec National Assembly, stays due to being a cultural symbol rather than religious.
By those standards, then Quebec needs to realise that these garments, starting off as religious garments, turned into something enshrined in people’s cultures. The culture of those who call Canada home becomes part of the grander Canadian collective culture. A turban or a hijab holds religious value but is treated by their wearers as regular pieces of clothing.

Some analysts of the Charter agree that the main people the Charter targets aren’t those who practise religion, but those who practise the wrong religion. Christian crosses can be worn, just as long as they remain discrete. Many minority religious groups feel that by those standards, they are truly the people who are being personally attacked. Quebec’s Charter shows the xenophobia currently existing in Quebec society. The paranoia of the loss of the Quebec culture can create very oppressive steps to preserve such culture.
Quebec already currently bleeds immigrants to more westerly provinces, such as Ontario, BC, and Alberta. The current strict language laws already discourages the use of immigrant languages in the daily public. The public image of the province is constantly scrutinised by the media for being an assimilative culture. If such a Charter would be enacted, Quebec’s diversity will be held hostage to an oppressive governmental action.

Grouplove’s new album is getting talk, but not “Spreading Rumours”

I had very high expectations for Grouplove’s second album Spreading Rumours. I also had very high expectations for the lead singer, Christian Zucconi. He is one of my absolute favourite male vocalists. I must say, my expectations were met fairly well. With the regular album at 13 songs and the deluxe version at 16, it was the perfect amount of songs. So if you are willing to pay the extra $3 for the extra three songs, I would highly suggest doing so, especially since it’s only $9.99. Plus you can’t help to notice it already has 12 reviews, every single one 5 stars, on iTunes during it’s first day on the charts. So I’ll just dive right into my review of some of my favourite songs on the album.
Ways To Go: Great choice to be the single on the album. Definitely one of the strongest songs on the album by far. When I first heard this song, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they were adding a electronic vibe to their songs, yet still keeping that old Grouplove Sound from the first album ” Never Trust a Happy Song.”
School Boy: Really love the lyrics with this song, which is the main reason it’s one of my favourites. It’s just overall a great song with a great drum beat!
Hippy Hill: I have literally been singing this one lyric from the song all day! “I’d rather be a hippy than a hipster” I think my friends were ready to kill me.
Didn’t Have to Go: This song was on replay during most of my gym class. Great pump up song for when you are running cross country.
What I know: One of the catchiest chorus’ ever. Will definitely be one of those belting car songs you sing on your way to the grocery store.
And if this doesn’t convince you enough check out the album cover, seriously so cool!
And finally a tad bit of constructive criticism. Now unfortunately there is always that one song on an album that you can’t stand and for me it is “Beans on Pizza.” I hate to say it, but the lyrics are bland and pointless and the song was kind of trippy and weird. However, that is the only major problem I had with this album. Overall Rating: 17/20
RoboCop, the secret to justice on earth?
The premiere of the international trailer of the 1987 remake, Robocop, made its debut this past week. I was more than over the moon to see the trailer on the featured page of YouTube. But then naturally I began to think about the idea of Robocop and its effects on humanity.
First of all, I believe that our technology is making breakthroughs every single day. Therefore, the reality of people serving society within the confines of a robotic suit is not far away. Our constantly revolutionizing science world has led to many hollywood film makers toying with the imaginative ideas on this concept. Even the summer blockbuster films, Iron Man 3 and Pacific Rim have affirmed this notion.
However, is it really humane to lacerate someone to a mechanical body and force he/she to fight for society? The idea sounds cool, but there are some moral repercussions. In the Robocop trailer, the protagonist suffers from being paralyzed from an accident and thus, he is given a second chance to serve his civilians by being thrown into this robot. But, is this what the wearer of the suit truly desires? Perhaps, he would rather live as nature intended him to, instead of masquerading in a man-made facade. The fact that he would be in this suit would restrain him from ever experiencing the small joys of having a human anatomy; Robocop will never have the feeling of a handshake or a high five, he will never know the touch of his son’s face. These would be the sacrifices that this technology would present. Not to mention, the robot could malfunction (like in I, Robot) and the wearer could potentially die in the process or the suit could possibly revolt and bludgeon the population.
There are also other major societal issues with this concept as well. Many other countries would likely extradite the technology to benefit themselves in war or other violent circumstances. With the sensitive issues ongoing in Syria with chemical weapons, it is risky-to say the least- to thrust another advanced technology that could potentially be used against society. Or another revelation on the topic could be that pursuing this technology is worth it for the protection of humanity. Let me know what you think, is it worth having “Robocop” technology, regardless of the consequences it may present?
But before this technology or even the factitious idea appears in headlines, let’s just sit back and enjoy the show because, “Somewhere there is a crime happening.”-Robocop
Is this the new smartphone revolution?
A new idea has come up and it needs the world’s help to become a reality. Phonebloks is a new project in which the idea is to create a phone which can be separated into replaceable parts. For example, a lot of people break their phone’s screen. With phonebloks, this is no longer a problem as you can replace your screen without having to replace the entire phone. This is a perfect idea in the way that it saves the environment. By the same token, it is also a good idea for consumers and the tech industry as the products add ons are said to be open source, allowing for users to choose whichever part they desire. Some people may want a better camera for better pictures or a better processor for a faster phone. What ever the consumer desires, they may choose.
On the other hand, this company needs your help in order for the product to be created. If they cannot get a few companies like example Samsung, Nokia or other tech companies to agree to create parts, they will not create this product. This is why you can support them for free by using thunderclap (a website used to massively tweet or Facebook one thing at the exact second to every one of your followers or friends, along with thousands, possibly millions, of other people) to show companies that there is support for this product.
