An orange Thanksgiving

0

October Harry Potter Quote

source: Tumblr
source: Tumblr

October can be easily romanticized into the month of orange, of fluttering leaves and pumpkins and first snowfalls. After months of lazing haze, October is when the wind realizes its duties with a sudden swiftness. Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late! it echoes after the white rabbit. The prospect of winter, of the dull, colourless months is a oxymoron of its own. Large fur coats, laced with frost, complain against the wailing wind and razor-edge snowflakes – yet, knowing a warm embrace awaits at home is enough to keep one content.

I suppose I never had understood Thanksgiving as it was intended. Sure, I looked forward to the holiday as a child because it meant an extra day off from school. It also gave me great joy to stand in the chaos of a supermarket as parents and grandparents run to and fro, preparing for the big feast that lay ahead. The sight of bloated turkeys flying down the conveyer belt at the checkout counter was certainly worth a giggle.

From reading books, I knew that Thanksgiving meant pain for some and happiness for others. The dreaded feeling of meeting long-lost family members was enough to send shivers down one’s spine. Charles, remember Aunt Marge from you were little? (Who?) Oh, here comes Uncle Joe and your cousins! The only thing that could have kept one hopeful was maybe the dessert, which signified the end to the torture. If one enjoyed being around one’s family, Thanksgiving would be a totally different experience. Either way, it was an experience.

As a university student, I found myself in neither case as I studied in an empty residence hall this Monday. Sitting down with a warming cup of Earl Grey and irresistibly vibrant macarons, I tried to convince myself that it was an enjoyable afternoon as leaves flickered past my bedroom window. Peace, calm, and quiet – what more could one ask for during midterm season?

The orange of the sugar maple leaf caught my eye then – I guess that was when I realized what the orange meant. Mind you, I always have hated the colour orange, mainly because it was so obnoxious that it rarely got along with other colours; it brought disharmony to anything it dared to touch. What I saw through the window that afternoon, though, was not pumpkins or crackling fires or autumn itself. What I saw was the warmth of one’s family. Just the presence of them, nothing else.

It is only with seeing past the superficiality of the glistening turkey and the decorative dishes we could appreciate the little comforts in our lives. Although I wasn’t able to go home this weekend, many of my friends in university were. Scrolling down Facebook, one could see statuses pregnant with contentment. I found it amusing how much joy a private toilet can bring!

A special thanks to my friend Susan, who agreed to share her status :)

Controversial public art: Why is art important?

In the past few months, the City of Calgary has invested quite a bit of money in making our city more beautiful, to be exact, 1% of all the expenses put aside for projects.

View image on Twitter
Huffington Post Alberta, Article from October 9, 2013

Just a few days ago, one more piece was added to our city, called “The Travelling Light,” along 96 Avenue. Other art projects such as the Bow Tower, the Peace Bridge, and some minor installations along the c-train lines downtown have been internationally recognized and have increased Calgarians’ pride. The newest addition does not receive any love or recognition – rather hatred, going as far as saying it is so ugly, it is not worth being talked about! Even our mayor says he hates it.

Well, before we can judge, we need to understand what art is about. So what is its importance?

Art is a way to express ourselves, and our thoughts. Though not crucial to our surviving like food and drink, it can indeed help clients in institutions focus on their psychological well-being. Art further defines our culture, and often pushes us to the edge of our understanding of Art.

According to the website “Do Something,” there are seven main reasons why the arts are important. Here they are:

1. They are languages that all people speak that cut across racial, cultural, social, educational, and economic barriers and enhance cultural appreciation and awareness.
2. They provide opportunities for self-expression, bringing the inner world into the outer world of concrete reality.
3. They develop both independence and collaboration.
4. They make it possible to use personal strengths in meaningful ways and to bridge into understanding sometimes difficult abstractions through these strengths.
5. They improve academic achievement – enhancing test scores, attitudes, social skills, critical and creative thinking.
6. They exercise and develop higher order thinking skills including analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and ‘problem-finding’.
7. They provide the means for every student to learn.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

There are four crucial questions, that will be answered, or will be attempted to be answered, since there is no such thing as one correct answer in Art, in four different articles. The questions are:

1. To what extent can the intention of the art collective behind a piece shape our opinion of the art piece?

2. To what extent do we have to consider the nationality of an artist, when the piece constructed is to represent a different nation?

3. To what extent is the cost of a public art project justified, if it takes money from crucial city development funds?

4. To what extent should the public actually be involved in considering the type of art paid for as ‘Public Art’?

How to cope with being forgetful

0

Being a teenager is tough, but being a forgetful one is even worse.

forgetfullnessTrust me, I get it. I forget everything, in fact, I almost forgot to write this blog post until I tripped on my laptop. It doesn’t help with people asking me why I’m forgetful. I don’t know! I don’t want to be forgetful. I was just born to forget.

I think I have realized that the fact that I am hopelessly unorganized may contribute to my forgetfulness. My locker is like an abyss; once something goes in, it never comes out. That’s a lot like my mind. Everything I hear is in one ear, out the other. I try to remember, but I simply can’t.

But I have found out how to live with my forgetfulness. So, for all you forgetful people, I have found solutions!

People say that I should write things down. Sure, I guess it might help, but I always put my sticky notes somewhere and forget where they are. So I write everything on my hand. It may not be aesthetically pleasing, but I will never lose my hand! My reminders are always with me.

If you don’t want to be covered in ink, put your electronics to good use! If you have any smartphone, your phone has built in reminders. Once you need to remember something, put it in your reminders and your device will remember for you!

If you don’t have a smartphone, no need to fret! Buy an agenda. I know agendas area a hassle to carry and you can’t be bothered to write in them, but with a little dedication and effort, using an agenda will be part of your routine!

If, like me, you forgot where you put your agenda, try for something a bit more permanent. Like a white board! Keep a white board in your locker so you can write down reminders after every class. And when you are back at your locker, your reminders are there waiting for you!

These were just a few tips to help my fellow neglectful friends out there, I really hope they help! 🙂

How to avoid being scammed online

0

Source: http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSSCC83LSCnmiLh5T1eIKTvKbnzbS0biKrmOTyoS54CcCXNmHvxWwThere comes a day when we all find ourselves clicking on that fateful link which sends us into the rabbit hole of online shopping. With prices ranging from all the pennies in your piggy bank to your first born child, there is still one question we must all ask. Is online shopping reliable?

Rumours of sketchy shops stealing credit card information and faulty products flood online forums, but are all of these stories even reliable? Sure, if a store is offering a mint-condition iPhone 6 for $50, you should probably click away. But perfectly trustworthy websites get bad reputations from these tall tales. Of course, there is no bullet-proof evidence that can be used to detect scams on the Internet, but there are indicators to tell whether or not an online store is reliable.

Here are some simple steps to follow if you want to order off of a website:

1. Always check to see if PayPal is an option. If you or your parents are wary of credit card scams, pre-paid PayPal cards are available at most gas stations. This way, absolutely no information about your credit cards get leaked, and you can keep refilling your account whenever you want to buy something. Using the PayPal method, you can also make sure that you don’t overspend! Once the pre-existing balance is depleted, it is time to stop adding things to your cart.

2. There are plenty of websites that will check for internet fraud. Just plug in the link to whichever website you want to order off of, and most sites will either turn up with a scam free message or percentage of reliability. Although one may give you the go while another turns out with a red stop, they are a quick and very accessible source. It might be wise to try several of them in order to get a general consensus.

3. If you are too lazy for the above steps, simply scroll down to the bottom (or find it at the top) where the website displays all the methods of payment that they accept. Normally, trusted websites will have pictures that you can click on that will take you to, for example, MasterCard’s website. If you cannot click on the pictures, it may be a sign of laziness, or it may be a sign of scandal.

4. Lastly, the most important give-away is whether or not a phone number, email, and address of the company is provided. If not all of these pieces of information can be provided, you can suspect general fishiness.

Overall, just try to stay away from online shopping and save up some money!

Don’t let money narrow your choices

Last week, my blog’s focus was on international studies. It’s not like it’s entirely new to our generation that we have options abroad, and since the International Baccalaureate (IB) has been established, students all over the world have the chance to receive an international education. But normally that’s where our knowledge and insight ends. Why? Money.

There are a few tricks to get away for less!

Here the top three options I have encountered while looking for a university myself:

1. Bucerius Law School Hamburg, Germany

The Bucerius Law School is one of the youngest law schools in Germany, but already one of the best. Attending that private law school is a privilege, since a rigorous application process containing three parts has to be passed. But all the efforts are worth it in the end: Graduates from the Bucerius Law School have an above average chance of getting a good paying job. All while offering the students a unique financing opportunity. They call it the “Reversed Generations-Contract.” Sounds like a super big and complicated system, but all it is is the following: The student attends school for free, until the studies are done, and they found a job. When having a job that pays more than 28.000€, for ten years, the students will pay 9% of their income every year to the university, until their fees are repaid. This permits students to always be certain that they have enough money for necessities in life.

2. Nordakademie Elmshorn, Germany

Nordakademie Elmshorn has a different approach. Since the school only offers co-op programs in business and engineering, the companies pay the students’ school fees, and while in the practical period, the companies also pay their students a reasonable pay, as if they were already working for them. Further, when the students are done their studies, most likely they are already guaranteed a spot with the company as an actual employee. Same as with the Bucerius Law School, the Nordakademie’s application process is rigorous, consisting of a four hour online test, and once that test is passed, the potential applicants have to apply to the companies of their choice, with a serious application such as adults.

3. Asking Companies for Money

Another very popular option is to talk to companies to sponsor new striving stars in the world of business. It, concept-wise, is pretty much like a combination of the co-op program and generations-contract. The company pays for the tuition, and once the student has a job, he/she pays the company back. In addition, the student, in order to receive funding in the first place, has to have a good application, which can result in the company also deciding to take on the student once graduated from university!

When I looked for a university spot that I could afford, I found these three options as most attractive. What’s interesting to note is that they are all in Germany.

Check out the links below! And I don’t just think it’s cool because I am German, but because it has been proven to be!

You butter remember

How peanut butter is helping to cure memory loss

On October 9, 2013, a research study was conducted with peanut butter and patients with early Alzheimer’s and dementia. In the project, the distance from which a patient with their eyes closed could smell a tablespoon of peanut butter from the nose was measured. It was found that patients with early stages of Alzheimer’s Disease were impaired in their left nostril, not being able to smell the peanut butter as well as they could with their right nostril. Patients without AD showed no such disability. At the moment, this test can be used as a probable detector and diagnosis procedure for Alzheimer’s patients, but more study needs to be done in order to further understand this curious case. More information about this article can be found here.

With so many advances in technology just in the past 20 years, it’s easy to remain optimistic that one day a cure for such diseases can be found. It’s hard living with cancer or Alzheimer’s in your own family as you know how it touches lives.

Warning, sad topic ahead.

The reason for this peculiar topic is that my grandpa has Alzheimer’s and when I saw this article it just caught my attention. AD is not one of those diseases than can be treated, but it is still beneficial to catch it early on. In the end, the results are still solemn.

The first few years, it’s forgetting that you already made dinner and then making it again or putting on two pairs of pants. Slowly, you start losing touch of days, weeks, years. When I went to visit him in China two years ago, he had no idea that 10 years passed since I last saw him. I smiled as he called me by a name I no longer use and watched as he would instinctively look down every time he tried to talk to me.

Recently, he has lost touch of who my mom and dad or any of his grandchildren are. He only knows the aunt and uncle who stand by him day and night, and sometimes he forgets their names too. Clinging on to the memory of a grandma who long passed, he refuses to leave the house for fear that she will be lonely when she gets back. Hopefully, he never slips past the point of breaking, as most unfortunately do.

On Sunday, October 13, the Alzheimer’s Society of Calgary is hosting their 23rd annual Thanksgiving Memory Walk & Run, an event I will be participating in. It would mean a lot if even one of you would check out this event. Just as with any other cause, we walk, run, and bike in hopes of reaching a brighter future where no one will have to suffer.

Embrace being an introvert

2

introverts-blog (1) Today’s world, with so many people buzzing around you, with many avenues to stay connected, there are still people who like to stay with themselves, in their very own world. And I am one of them. To all the introverts (including me) this is an article written for you, to let people know that introverts are no less cooler than others. We don’t lack confidence nor do we hate people; all we do is love our own company a little more than others.

During my childhood, I didn’t have many friends and frankly that concerned my parents a bit. I tried getting along with people but it never worked out; not due to a fight or grudge but the reason remained unknown till I started identifying with my own self. It was not others but myself! I felt suffocated when a person came too close or blabbered a lot. And as I grew up, I knew that I was not a flamboyant teenage girl with cool friends to hang out with. I lived in a different world all by myself and yet never felt lonely. And now I am still an introvert with a handful of friends (who are also introverts). So if you are one of those people who fear being an introvert in today’s world, remember you are not alone. There are tonnes of other introverts just like you and me who “love being alone without being alone.”

Seven steps to being part of a fandom

0

fandoms_unite_by_purpleperson17-d66ygok

1. Discovery

All of us have a friend who has immersed themselves in the world of a fandom. I happen to be the friend who is part of almost every fandom and I must be really annoying. That friend probably talks about the wonders of their fictional world with a passion most people don’t understand. But you decide you will listen to your friend and look up whatever TV show or book they have blabbing about to make them shut up.

You start reading or watching. And during the first chapter or episode, something peaks your interest. And you continue indulging in this wonderful experience. You are now part of this fandom.

2. Obsession

After you start with the series, you simply cannot get enough. You are micro analyzing every character until you feel like you have become them. You are suddenly blurting quotes in class. Your room is covered with paraphernalia and your family cannot look anywhere in your house without finding some sort of merchandise. You have officially settled into your fandom.

3. Blabber

Once you have been fully immersed in your chosen fandom, you simply cannot shut up. You are talking to everyone about your favourite series. You are quoting it without realizing it. You have inherited traits from your favourite characters. You talk about what you would do in the characters situations and you have developed an odd fear of statues*.

4. Outbreak

Once your friends have become thoroughly annoyed by you, one of them is bound to start on your favourite series as well. Soon enough, they are addicted as well. Now you two are geeking about, talking about things nobody understands and after a while, more and more people become addicted as well.

Now there are legions of you. Legions of fans. It’s quite frightening. But now you can have a group of people to discuss your fandom with. At this point, you aren’t even part of a fandom, the fandom is part of you.

5. Standstill

Eventually, you will catch up and be up to date with the books or shows. Now, you have to wait. You wait for a new book, a new episode, or a new season. Who knows how long you will have to wait, a week? A month? Six months? A year? Either way, waiting sucks.

Your world has stopped. And now you are just waiting for new material to make you world start spinning again.

6. Depression

You feel empty. You have seen every episode, read every book. Now what? You re-watch, you re-read, you laugh and cry all over again. Yet it isn’t the same. Depending on the fandom, you are either waiting a week, or a year for your world to start again. At this time, all you can do is reminisce about the characters you’ve lost and the fact that you can’t meet new ones. This part of the cycle is tough, but hopefully there is a silver lining (unless you watch Freaks and Geeks).

7. Discovery (again)

Alas! New material! Your world is filled with colours! All the emotions are coming back! Oh, the feels! You cannot help but dread the inevitable end of your book or show though. Because there is always an end. So your paraphernalia collection grows, and you add on more fandoms to keep busy, and next thing you know, you always have something exciting involving a fandom happening.

Once you join a fandom, there is no escape. None. A fangirl (or boy) must live in their fandoms until the end of their days (this is especially true for fans of Doctor Who). And never, ever, shall a fangirl/boy have a dull day in their lives ever again.

New Black Centre brought hope to young musicians

0

SONY DSCWhen I read the Calgary Herald article about the New Black Arts Centre for Music and Art shutting down I was truly saddened. As a young musician myself, I can say on the behalf of many that I would love to have the chance to play in a band, even if it was just a bunch of high school kids rocking out in their garage.

I know how hard it is to find the realistic side of things when it comes to wanting a career within music and art. With hockey and other sports growing in popularity, it’s getting easier and easier to picture you or someone you know making it big on a sports team. The New Black Centre for Music and Art was a great thing to have in Calgary. It was one of the only places some kids could go to to play and practice their music. It even had a professional recording studio inside. They offered great summer camps, especially the one to empower girls with music and arts in the time where girls still struggle to be equal. It truly was a safe environment for all ages, that even had many local bands come to play, with some of them even starting out at the centre when they were just kids.

It is sad to see it go, but hopefully we can find something positive out of this. Maybe this can spark a change and give more chances for our musical youth to do what we love. I hope to see the arts and music get more support one day. When I grow up I hope my kids can walk into a building and feel as if it is a second home for them to come and let go of life’s worries and play music, if that’s what they want. Heck, even if that second home is to tie up their skates and hit the ice, or put on a jersey to play defense on the field, I don’t care! Just as long as they have somewhere that they can feel safe and have fun, to let their passion ignite. Somewhere like The New Black Centre For Music and Art.

PARKLUXE 2013: The Show

0

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending PARKLUXE 2013, an event aimed to celebrate local artists and designers. This particular event took place at the Telus SPARK center and was attended by many lovers of art and fashion, as well as professionals. I was utterly amazed at every detail of the fashion show itself, from the talented designers, to the fierce, edgy models, to the professionalism of the entire atmosphere.

The event featured two separate shows, each featuring different designers and their very own collections. Though unfortunately, I was unable to stay for both showings, I was able to access photos of the two shows from Zed Vitaly Abosh, a professional photographer working for FSE. Below is a sneak peek at some of the designs present at the show, you can find the list of amazing designers featured here.

1391695_10202294940480610_402015782_n

To be a model is to be the dazzling, lasting canvas on which masterpieces are displayed, and the models at PARKLUXE demonstrated this concept perfectly. Every one of these beautiful ladies rocked the runway in stunningly clad outfits, each is a moving work of art. However, the most vital aspect of a fashion show, naturally, is the fashion. What I found very pleasing about the collections displayed at the showings was the ability of designers to create outfits that are completely glamorous, yet maintain a practicality that allows for everyday wear. I find that not enough collections nowadays promote the beauty of practical wear, which is partially why I enjoyed PARKLUXE’s showings very much.

Overall, I felt that the event was unlike anything I’ve experienced before, and was fantastic in every aspect. The attendees were as glamorous as the models, and the atmosphere was incredibly posh and beautiful. PARK has done an astoundingly great job at promoting artists and refining culture, as the show unveiled the extent of local talents. Harry Potter exhibition coming to Edmonton

0

I just got home from helping out at a debate workshop at my school, and I have to pack to go on an outdoor ed trip tomorrow, and that’s just the tip of my busy-life iceberg. But even still, I like to add things to it. So this post may be short, but hopefully short and super sweet because if you are a Harry Potter fan in Calgary, you may be looking at the gates to heaven.

Why? The Harry Potter Exhibition is coming to Edmonton on Nov 23, and staying until March. A.k.a. three hours away will be a portal into the world of Harry Potter, which so many of us have grown up in. Maybe that letter never arrived at your door. But don’t lose hope. Relight your passion for Harry Potter. It doesn’t matter how, just find a way to be there.

Check out the Edmonton Telus World of Science website here, where you can purchase tickets to the exhibition.

Check out everything about the exhibition on the official website here.

And watch the video!

The grammar and writing of this post probably isn’t the greatest, but that’s because I can’t contain my excitement. I swear my brain might explode. SO EXCITED!!!

DIY: Dried Roses

0

1236046_644445165580729_815024621_nAbout two weeks ago, one day after school my boyfriend showed up with a beautiful surprise for me: a bouquet of roses. I did all that I could to help them last as long as possible, change their water daily, fed them plant food, trimmed their stems, but regardless of my efforts, after two weeks my roses were looking a little sorry. My side table looked barren without them, so I decided, why not dry them? A quick Google search later, I had found a variety of options for drying roses, with options ranging from putting them in sand, to keeping them to dry for months. I opted for the Instructables option- hanging the flowers to dry. Here’s how:

Step One: Cut off any unwanted leafs and thorns, I personally kept the prettier leafs intact. Then pick off any wilted petals that are beginning to fall off.

Step Two: Take an old hanger and hang your flowers from the hanger upside-down using string, like so:

Leave your flowers to dry for a week or two.

Step Three: Arrange your flowers in a pretty vase and enjoy!
