Revisiting Barrier Lake for those autumn hues

0

I’m BACK (to YAA). Okay, I admit it isn’t that exciting. Even then, blogging still invigorates me; blame school for preventing me from doing a bunch of posts.

Autumn is an exciting season though. Most summer lovers will disagree with this, but I get more excited when fall is here. The yellow, orange, and green hues all added up together makes for scenery to be taken in slowly like a sip of tea. I love the mood of fall; the golden especially provokes that sense of astonishment.

I’m sure many of you have read Julia’s post on her trip to Barrier Lake over the Labour Day long weekend. It’s only been a month, and what a change it has been. I think it’s for the better, so I took some pictures of the sight for you to develop your own take:

Taking flight for a cure for jetlag

0

clock_brain_450_252According to The Independent, there could be a plausible cure to the dreaded symptoms of jetlag. The study conducted by Japan’s Kyoto University could even cure the effects of working irrepressible hours into the night. And yes, I am speaking on behalf of all the students out there.

We have built-in clocks within our bodies. However, the new research reveals that our primary clock resides in the contents of our brain. This clock controls our fatigue during the night and awareness during the day. The clock is manipulated by the amount of light in our surroundings. Our “master-clock” as most scientists refer to it, are comprised of 10,000 brain cells that send signals to each other. Scientists have revealed that the vassopressin receptors (the part of the cell that act as ears) can be adjusted to accelerate the body’s clock to move faster. Yoshiaki Yamaguchi’s research team examined mice, whose master-clock was set back eight days. By interfering with the vassopressin receptors, the mice were able to adapt to the time difference within a day. Normal mice took six days to adjust to a normal time frame.

This study could be the real flight to creating a method to use the newly uncovered knowledge of vassopressin receptors. Do not lose hope, for in a few years, there could be a cure to fatigue (as I am writing with drooping eyes into the night). Whether you have recently traveled to a completely incompetent time zone and/or are working long hours, this study could possibly lead to a permanent cure for our under-eye circles.

Finding the perfect pizza at Famoso

0

OUTDOORCOOKINGWith two locations in Calgary, I’ve been wanting to try eating at Famoso for a while. They boast unique, quality ingredients and an authentic, Italian cooking process. They did not disappoint.

My overall experience at Famoso was phenomenal, with the exception of a few minor things. The scenery of the restaurant was very modern, with huge windows facing towards the street. When I first arrived, it took around 20 minutes to be seated. When you are seated, customers must get up and order at the till. I found this slightly problematic as the line began to stretch through the restaurant. I ordered the sweet barbeque chicken pizza as well as the fire roasted tomato bisque soup. The waiter explained that the food would be out quickly, as the pizzas only take around 90 seconds to cook on their state-of-the-art Italian stone oven.

Once the tomato bisque had arrived it tasted smooth with a few tiny tomatoes. The bisque was splendid, especially with the flatbread on the side. tomato_bisque

Minutes later the main dish arrived. The pizza was definitely the most enjoyable part of my meal due to the tasty crust and the plentiful amount of barbeque sauce. Tomatoes and chicken were scattered perfectly around the pizza.MFZMzRdcg01uR5

Overall I would rate Famoso a 4.5/5. Perfect food, but an odd ordering system that I disliked.

You can choose to be dauntless – How the story of “Divergent” teaches us to overcome our fears

1

Divergent hc c(2)Many people would be overwhelmed with fear when faced with a task of jumping down from a rooftop especially when you don’t know where you would fall or how deep the fall is. However, we can overcome our many fears as proven to us by Beatrice Prior, the main character in the International Bestseller, “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, when she took that step to jump into the unknown. She is a prime example of taking that one step to overcome our fears.

In the book, fear is something that plays a major role in the development of the characters. In the main characters’ attempt to pass the initiation of their faction and become Dauntless, they are pushed to overcome their fears.

We all have fears. Our fears can stem from our past experiences, from our surroundings and from the way we were brought up. The problem with our fears is that we allow it to control us. We allow these fears to hinder us from reaching our full potential. We must try our best to overcome our fears for it is only when we are able to overcome these fears are we able to live our life to the fullest.

Here are some common fears of the youth today and how we can overcome them!

1. Fear of Failure – This is the most pervasive fear in the youth of today. A lot of us are inherently scared of failure. Ever since we’re kids, failure is something that has been given a negative connotation by our parents, teachers, friends and society as a whole. However, what people fail to see is that failure is essential in order to succeed. Failure allows us to learn from our mistakes and discover ourselves in the process.

Nnobody is perfect and we will fail more often than not. It’s about learning from our failures and bouncing back. And remember, without failure, you also wouldn’t know what it’s like to succeed!

divergent 22. Fear of Speaking in front of a crowd – This is a fear that not only the youth face but most people do. Studies have shown that this is one of the greatest fears of every single human being on earth. The problem with most people is that they subconsciously pre-empt their performance that they end up over thinking and messing up their speech as a result.

Most people usually assume that every move they make is noticed by others and that one mistake and people will be judging them already. However, the truth is people give you the benefit of the doubt and more often than not, they don’t notice your minor mistakes.

By reminding yourself that its only your subconscious scaring you and that you won’t die even if you mess up, you’ll start becoming more confident and before you know it, you’ll look forward to speaking in front of a crowd.

3. Fear of Expressing their opinion – Most of the youth today are afraid to express what they think. They’re afraid that what they say is wrong and that they will be berated as a result. This mentality should be broken for every person’s voice and opinion has value to it. People should not be afraid to speak out their thoughts for it is through speaking out that we are able to communicate each other and make everyone’s ideas be heard.

You never know, what you’re thinking might be the next game changing idea. You never know, what you’re thinking may be what the other person is also thinking. This leads to the next fear.

divergent 54. Fear of the Future – Nobody can predict the future, which is why we should not worry about it too much. Life changing moments can happen any time. We can never calculate and quantify life. One moment you may be reading this article, the next, you’ve finally overcome your fear. This is exactly why we should not be afraid of what lies ahead.

We must live in the moment for the greatest thing that truly affects our future is what we do in the present!

5. Fear of trying out something new – A lot of us are scared when it comes to trying something new. More often than not, it’s because we are afraid to step out of our comfort zone. As human beings, it’s in our instincts to stick to our routine and what we usually do. When it comes to something we’ve never done before, we start to feel nervous and as a result, overtime, we stop trying out new things.

We must fight this mentality especially for the youth because we are still young and there are still myriad of things we haven’t tried. Most of us do not truly know what we’re good at or what we enjoy and it’s only by trying out novel activities that we are able to find what we are passionate about.

Final Takeaways

What I learned from the book Divergent is that we shouldn’t run away from these fears. Instead, we must accept it and face it head on. Only by facing these fears head on are we able to fully grow and become who we truly want to be. At the start, Beatrice had her doubts but by believing in herself she was able to overcome all her fears and prove her naysayers wrong.

Life is about overcoming these fears, the doubts you have and all those voices saying, “you can’t do it,” or “you shouldn’t do it.” Life is about making that choice to “do it” because no matter what you say, at the end of the day, the choice is always ours. Just like how Beatrice abandoned the faction she had lived in for the first 16 years of her life to join the dauntless faction, we too can make that choice to become DAUNTLESS!

And with that, I invite you to read the book Divergent by Veronica Roth if you haven’t for it truly is one breathtaking book – one that will blow you away and in the process, show you that fears will always be part of life yet these same fears shouldn’t stop you from making the most out of your life, in fact, it should propel you to reach new heights!

Moving to Vancouver: Diary of a flower child

0
Vancouver
Vancouver skyline

When I moved to Vancouver last September, I started becoming a hippie.

The sort of all-natural, one-with-the-universe, health-nut kind of hippie (not the psychadelic drug trip kind of hippie).

And I love it.

I’ve really been interested in sustainability and protecting the environment for most of my life. I thank my parents for that:
-My parents enrolled my sisters and I in Scouts, where loving nature is a central idea.
-My mother would be scadalized if anyone in the family tried to throw out anything recyclable.
-My family has a composting system we use to fertilize the garden. There are photos of me as a baby frolicking in the freshly fertilized garden bed, muddy and smiling.

On the other hand, my father is a geologist. One day I came home, an impassioned 14 year old, declaring that the entire population of the planet should switch to electric cars, and my sister pointed out that if that were possible and really happened, our dad would lose his job.

And here I am today, a summer student working for an oil and gas company myself.

The oil and gas industry has a bad reputation within this whole green revolution. Which is why I think this shift into a more environmentalist mindset has been a little stunted in Alberta.

I mean, we’re not that bad. When I went to Ukraine a few years ago I was appalled to see piles of thousands of empty glass bottles collecting on the sides of roads and rivers. I tried to rally my tour group to collect some and recycle them, whereupon I learned that the area we were travelling through simply did not have recycling services. That’s bad.

But Albertans aren’t too excited about environmentalism. I feel like a lot of Albertans get uneasy about the “green revolution” because of potentially negative effects on the economy here. Some people just think it’s a joke. So when I went to Vancouver and discovered eco-enthusiasts, my mind was blown.

There were separate bins in my residence cafeteria: composting, recycling, and (off in the corner, to discourage its use) garbage.

There were vegetarian options everywhere.

The transportation system? Way better than Calgary Transit.

I was enthralled.

I’ve also been very interested in maintaining and improving my health and happiness. Upon becoming a bit of a hippie, this interest has increased greatly. Why wouldn’t I want to feel great and full of life? Why wouldn’t I want to ward off disease and aging? Why wouldn’t I want more energy and radiant natural beauty?

It started in September with taking up yoga and becoming a pescetarian (no meat except fish).

They were both for health reasons- my older sister has had a lot of success with feeling better from yoga and no meat, so I thought I’d try it too. I love it. Yoga is the wonderful blend of physical and mental health, and I always feel more at peace and physically limber when I finish a class. When I go a week or two without it, I feel moodier and am less able to cope with stress. As for meat, I don’t miss it at all and really do feel better.

When summer came I took up barefoot running (well, almost, I run in minimalist “barefoot” toe shoes) This fall, I’m hoping to cut out fish too (thus becoming a vegetarian).

The thing is, all the changes I’ve made started off as experiments. I try things to see if they work for me, and if they make me feel happier, healthier, or more positive in some way, then I stick with it. I’ve had a couple failed experiments- such as my spring mission to take morning runs (it turns out I am not a morning person), as well as trying to stop eating cheese (mac’n’cheese is my favourite food… ), but I might revisit them eventually.

What is it that should trace the insuperable line?… The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?
—Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832)

What to do when you’re sad

4

Do you ever just feel down somedays? Like you’re not necessarily sad, but not really happy either? Well, if you have, you definitely aren’t alone. I’ve felt this way before and I figured out ways to cure the sadness!photo-2

When you feel sort of empty inside, I feel as though drinking tea always helps. It might just be in my head, but drinking tea is so relaxing. The warmth and the smell soothe and calm me. I guess eating makes you feel better too, but that can get dangerous. I love eating, but make sure not to overeat. Eating your feelings can be unhealthy and may cause issues in your health.

Music always helps. No matter where I am, I always have an earbud in my ear. I find that music distracts you and fills your head with rhythm and melodies for you to sing along too. No matter what the situation, there is always a song that you can relate to. In a lot of ways,  music makes you feel less alone. Music can lift your mood too, when you listen to happy music that makes you want to dance, you forget what you were even sad about!

Do something productive! Do homework and finish it early, maybe practice an instrument, go outside and exercise. Whatever it is, doing something to distract you will give you something to think about, or a way to clear you head. When I’m feeling down, I like to go on a run or stretch. It clears my head and, at the same time, helps me think more clearly.

Read! Reading is my addiction, I love reading because, even for a little while, you can escape this world and enter another. My world will fill with colour and I become part of the book. I probably read too much, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It gives me the opportunity to escape the real world for a while. This, in itself, is dangerous, because I get so caught up in my books that I forget I even live in the real world, but that’s okay every once and a while.

tumblr_moygz1vCjd1r8n94ko1_500

I think the possibilities are endless. I think anything that can distract you is a cure to temporary sadness!

I really hope this helps you when you are feeling down. Have a wonderful life. 🙂

Four reasons why Glee isn’t going to last another season

2

Glee has been a huge success within its last four seasons to many teenage girls and boys alike. You can relate to it no matter who you are, popular, music nerd, outcast, really anyone. They have also successfully covered many topics such as texting and driving, teen marriages and pregnancies and school shootings, in a way that really captures the attention of teens. This success was huge and captured many fans such as myself, but with the new, 5th season just starting, I can tell that their time in the spotlight is up.  Here are my four reasons that I don’t think Glee will last much longer:

Glee Season 1 Cast
Glee Season 1 Cast

1. Finn is gone: Now I’m sure you all knew that this would be my first and most important key statement. Cory Monteith, the actor who played one of the main lead characters Finn, passed away due to a drug overdose this July. Finn was a jock character that had a secret interest in music. He was funny and charming. He was set to take over teaching the glee choir this season, but the writers have decided to cut out the character, feeling that Cory was irreplaceable. However, we have not seen how the death will play out on screen yet, so I, along with many others, am curious to see how they tie it in, which most definitely will result in more views.

2. Relationships: This show is well known for crazy relationship drama and love triangles that us teens just love. I am getting extremely tired of all the dating. I am sure that pretty much every character within the glee club has dated one another at some point. I believe that this is very unrealistic and most of the new couples don’t really work at all. Artie and Kitty – like seriously?! They are nothing alike and make a terrible match.

3. New cast members: The original season of glee consisted of many talented actors and since it was set in high school, after the third season many had to leave since the character would have moved onto college. They brought in new characters last season, but I think they are way too similar to the characters that left.

4. Story line: You can only do so much within a television show about the drama of high school and being in the glee club before it get’s old.

Glee season 4 cast
Glee season 4  cast

Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of the show, but just not this season. It was a great success but now I think it is time to give the reigns over to a new television show, and let them have their turn at extreme popularity.

Are you excited for Bad Grandpa?

0

Are you excited for the newest edition to the Jackass franchise? I know I am! This upcoming film is most definitely going to be one of the greatest comedies of the year, I can almost assure you, even surpassing We’re the Millers in comedic genius. jackass-presents-bad-grandpa

Starring Johnny Knoxville in his infamous “old man” makeup, this film follows the grand road trip of 86-year-old Irving Zisman and his grandson, Billy. Although fictional characters, Irving and Billy vex hundreds of people in real life, not acting, and catch their reactions on film. Though the plot may be a little weak, the stunts are absolutely hilarious.

If a movie can make me roll on the floor with laughter after only viewing its trailer, well, it’s got a thumbs-up from me.

Billy kicks over his grandpa while sitting in a lawn chair. Gold, just gold.
Billy kicks over his grandpa while sitting in a lawn chair. Gold, just gold.

Comedy, just like story-writing, is a delicate art, and Johnny Knoxville and his crew are extremely talented at what they do. In comedy, timing is key, and the performances in this movie look so intricately put together, even though to some they may seem messy or last-minute. Though some find the entire Jackass franchise disgusting, vile, or just plain stupid, I find it daring, inventive, and adroit at giving us, the viewers, a hearty laugh.

This movie will be released on Oct 25, 2013. Bad Grandpa, although not for everybody, is a film that I will definitely be watching.

See you at the movies!

Explaining ObamaCare

1
Obama

ObamaCare is a dubbed name for the Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act, a bill signed into law to reform the health care industry by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010.

Main Aims Of ObamaCare

ObamaCare’s main goal is to give more Americans access to affordable quality health insurance and to reduce healthcare spending in the US.

It will not replace private insurance companies since people can still continue to have health care coverage of their choice.

Strict regulations on for-profit health care industry.

New Benefits, Rights and Regulations:
New health insurance plans generously cover preventive services and provide essential benefits including yearly checkups, maternity care, mental health, mammograms and colonoscopies at a no out-of-pocket cost.

ObamaCare includes provisions that restrict insurance companies from dropping you when you are severely sick or made an honest mistake in your application form. It also disregards gender discrimination and unjustified rate hikes.

Obama Care Cost Assistance:
Advanced Premium Cost Credits
Cost Sharing Subsidies
Coinsurance and Deductibles

This plan is a real boon to the 15 million Americans who are not insured. The rest must obtain health coverage by 2014, get an exemption, or pay a fee.

Looking at the big plan, with all its conditions, I feel this is Obama’s sincere effort to help reduce health care costs in the USA. There are still millions who live in the state who are not insured at all, and thousands who fear going broke if they have to spend on medical services. This plan will stand by these people in times of financial crisis due to medical reasons. At the same time, many are concerned about long waiting periods and strife between government insurance and private insurance.

While Obama and his supporters in the Democratic Party portray the law as a historic effort to extend healthcare coverage to the millions of Americans who lack it, the law’s opponents say it amounts to an unprecedented intrusion into Americans’ private lives.

Tuesday being the first day of registration, online health insurance marketplaces struggled to keep up with the higher than expected demand. Users also encountered some bugs and crashes of the website. Obama acknowledged these issues.

“We found out that there have been times this morning where the site has been running more slowly than it normally will,” Mr Obama said.

“The reason is because more than one million people visited healthcare.gov before 7:00 in the morning.”

The Shutdown
Republicans across the country strive to undo this law, with the House of Representatives trying to repeal or cut down its funding.

On Tuesday, the US government shut down all the non-essential services, when the Democrats who control the Senate refused to agree to Republican demands to repeal the health law or delay the individual mandate.

Both Obama and congressional democrats have said they will not negotiate on Obamacare, with Obama on Monday evening accusing the Republicans of attempting to refight the last election.

In spite of all this political turmoil, Americans could still register for various insurance plans on Tuesday.

The many faces of Facebook

1

What would it look like if all of Facebook’s 1.2 billion users were stuffed into one massive profile picture? Now, we have a chance to find out.

Created by programmer Natalie Rojas, a website brings together all of Facebook’s users’ profile pictures into one collective mosaic. On the website, you can zoom in to the mosaic to view other people’s profile pictures from all over the world and by connecting with your Facebook account, you can find out where you are, where your friends are and who your first friend to be put into the mosaic was. Hovering over a face can give you their name and their face# (representing the order the Facebook profiles were created). Mark Zuckerberg, current Facebook CEO and one of the Facebook founders, is face #1.

In the description, Rojas offers the following explanation: “Because there we are, all mixed up: large families, women wearing burkas, many Leo Messis, people supporting same-sex marriages or r4bia, chihuahuas, Indian gods, tourists pushing the Leaning Tower of Pisa, selfies, newborns, Ferraris, studio black and white portraits, lots of weddings but zero divorces, ID photos, faces framed in hearts, best friends, manga characters, political logos, deep looks, love messages, eyes memes, smiles, sweet grandparents and some not-yet-censured pictures.” I thought the description was very reminiscent and touching… as when we go about our busy daily lives, we often forget to appreciate the diversity of the people around us, and appreciate the fact that even though we have different ethnicities, habits, dialogues, thoughts, feelings and opinions, we are still all human beings and in us is the wonderful and inspiring spark of human life. As for the privacy concerns people are bringing up, Rojas aptly replies that “Relax. We’re not breaking any Facebook privacy rule because we don’t store anyone’s private information, pictures or names.” While it is true that when you click any of the Facebook profiles on the mosaic, it takes you to the original Facebook profile on Facebook itself but its nothing that people can’t do while browsing Facebook themselves. Also, if a profile is marked private, no information that isn’t publicly available is shown here or when following the link to the full profile.

Movies to watch on Halloween

0

It’s October, everyone, and you know what that means. Time again for the pumpkins and candies, for both happy kids and dentists alike. Who will you be this Halloween? Will you be out there trick-or-treating, or handing out chocolates to costumed children? Since October 31 is on a Thursday, my plans would be to kick back with some classic horror films the weekend following Halloween. And thus I would like to share with you a list of my favorite films for the season.

tumblr.com

1) The Addams Family Values. Based on the 1960s television series, The Addams Family, this film retains the same satirical humor and elements of macabre. The Addams family is indeed an eccentric one, but each member is quirky in his/her own special way. My favourite character from this film is Wednesday Addams, whose deadpan, grim demeanor contributes to the the absurd humor that surrounds her. This film is perfect for a Halloween night and great for the whole family.

2) Psycho. The epitome of classical horror, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is one of the most iconic films in cinematic history. Who hadn’t heard of Norman Bates, or his famous motel? My favorite aspect of this film is in its independence from both jump scares and musical based suspense, and relies solely on plot to introduce to its audience the true insidious nature of our schizophrenic motel manager. I feel that many modern horror films rely too heavily on gore and jump scares, and completely misses the idea that the fear a film inflicts on its viewers should be story based. Psycho, however, perfectly captures and applies this concept, and had always been one of my favorites.

4) The Shining. Stephen King is widely known for writing horror, suspense, and science fiction novels. And so, when one of his most accomplished books was transformed onto the big screen (by Stanley Kubrick, no less), it was really no surprise that the movie was a huge hit. This film is a masterpiece on all three levels: acting, directing, and writing. Jack Nicholson plays a struggling writer who suffers hallucinations due to cabin fever when him and his family takes up a job to manage a hotel during winter.

5) The Blair Witch Project. Someone once said that the most terrifying horror film is one where the killer is never shown, I feel that whoever said that was referring to this movie. The Blair Witch Project is incredibly realistic in its unique style of filming. The entire movie is seen through the lenses of a camcorder that is held by one of the main characters. We see everything as they see, sometimes, even less, making the film even more suspenseful. We follow Michael, Joshua, and Heather on the search for an ancient legend gone awry.

6) Hide and Seek. The first time I watched this film, it kept me paranoid for two whole days. The psychological components injected into this story keeps the film suspenseful, and frightening, the whole way through. The plot surrounds a concerned father, attempting to bring his psychologically damaged daughter back to the norm after she witnessed her own mother’s suicide. They move to the country side is hopes that a new environment would urge her to come out of her shell, all the while being haunted by an old friend.

The season of new (TV) seasons

I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Pretty Little Liars, or The Walking Dead, or tons of those other popular shows. I do watch Modern Family, Once Upon a Time, Amazing Race, and some cooking shoes. In my opinion, it’s kind of sad to reflect upon the fact that compared to most people, I watch barely any TV. Not because I’m completely out of the loop when it comes to who the mother is and who killed who and who did what, but rather because it enforces that fact that we are TV addicted to an incredible degree.

Come September and some of October, a lot of shows are starting up again. Season premieres flood the television stations, and consequently, flood daily life. Conversations among classmates, articles in the media, the list goes on and on. TV has gotten an impenetrable grip on our society. If you stop and consider it for a second, it gets kind of scary.

Many people have many different reasons why they may find this scary, but for me, it comes down to how we use our time and what we chose to do with our lives.

Watch this video. It makes you think, so let it do that. Do some thinking.

How do you want to spend your jellybeans?

For many of us, it hardly comes down to choice anymore. It’s honest addiction. I’m not trying to tell you to stop watching TV. I’m just asking that you take a second and consider what I’ve said.

Maybe try multitasking while you watch TV. Knit, draw, finish your homework. Make your brain work instead of letting it get sucked into that flat vortex of a screen.

Just some things to think about 🙂

Making the transition out of high school

Our education becomes more and more international, due to many factors, but mainly media.
Our education becomes more and more international, due to many factors, but mainly media.

As we embark upon senior year at High School, we need to start thinking about our future. Where does it lie? At university? College? Co-op? A big, prestigious institution?

But most importantly: Where?

Ultimately, our decisions nowadays are heavily influenced by media. Individualistic ideas have resulted in competition, each person striving for the personal best. The result of such: Rankings. They are an important part for our future decision making.

How to choose what's best for our future? It's up to us, but it's really hard to know how our present decisions really influence our future.
How to choose what’s best for our future? It’s up to us, but it’s hard to know how our present decisions really influence our future.

But is it the best choice for us to go to the best ranked university if that institution is in a small city, or a city you have visited before and are bored of? No, your university years should be a great experience, an adventure every day! So what can be an adventure when we believe we’ve seen it all from the travels with our families?

The answer is, studying abroad, in a different country. Maybe one you have studied in school, one you are particularly interested in, or maybe the country your family can be traced back to.

"The World is Our Classroom" - International education becomes more and more important to most families, due to the benefits when searching for a job!

In any case, making the decision to get exposed to a different environment, eventually in a different language, is a big step in becoming an adult and maturing.

From finding new friends, to navigating in another language, to getting to know a new country and its culture is sure worth it.

And you can trust me – I’ve been studying abroad, in over 15 countries, since I was eight years old. And I’m almost 17.

Next in series: “Don’t let money narrow your choices!”

What if you stopped sleeping?

Sleep > Homework Preach it!

As we get later into the school year, the idea of sleep becomes almost comical to some of us. I know you IB and AP kids are out there. Staying up jacked on coffee all night begins to seem like the norm as we burn the midnight oil, reaching our seemingly impossible deadlines. While us zombie kids are roaming around the halls on three to four hours of sleep, we begin to think that it wouldn’t make a difference if we were to just stay awake doing homework for the rest of our lives.

An interesting video posted by AsapSCIENCE discusses the issue of never getting any sleep at all. For the first day, you might be fine, by the second day things will start going downhill.

Thinking about it from a scientific point of view, it doesn’t make sense to leave ourselves completely vulnerable for numerous hours completely unaware of the threats around us.

But humans need sleep (no matter how many of you think you don’t). Teenagers should be getting 9-10 hours (yeah right) each night, while adults need 8-9 hours. But realistically, who has the time? With homework and extra-curricular activities and work and… Well, it’s a shock that more of us aren’t in strait jackets.

No matter how important that essay may seem or how impossible that lab due tomorrow is, without getting enough sleep, you’re wasting all of your efforts. Did you know that it takes us up to two times longer to do something at night when it’s dark as opposed to the day? Staying up until 2 a.m. and spending over four hours on your homework would have only taken you half as long during the afternoon or evening. Obviously, we aren’t all that lucky to be able to get so much time in our days, but sometimes we have to ask if it’s really worth it.

Anyone reading this past 10 p.m., go to bed, you’ll thank me later.

Now, for those of you insomniacs out there, here are some sleeping tips that you may have heard a dozen times before but maybe it’s time to start considering them:

Set a regular bed time, that way it will be easier for you to fall asleep each night as your body will recognize that it’s the time of day when you’re supposed to be sleeping. As well, try to wake up at the same time every day so your body gets into a natural sleep-wake rhythm.

Napping is okay! If you missed out on some sleep, feel free to nap in the extra hours, but don’t overdo it. Your naps shouldn’t last longer than two or three hours, otherwise you’ll sleep the whole day away.

Most important of all DON’T PROCRASTINATE getting enough sleep. It’s probably due to procrastination you’re in this position in the first place. If it’s midnight and you’ve been looking at LOLcats, maybe it’s time to turn the screen off…

Goodnight everybody!

Pfanntastic Pannenkoek Haus brings a Dutch dining treat to Calgary

0

Pancake HouseThose who are fans of the Food Network show “You Gotta Eat Here” might remember a quaint, little Dutch pannekoek house from Calgary that was featured. Pfranntastic Pannerkoek Haus has made appearances in “My Favourite Restaurants” in Calgary and Banff, written by John Gilchrist, and in the October 2002 addition of “Gourmet Magazine.” Both awarded the restaurant an excellent review.

A Pannekoek is a thin, crepe-like pancake that has its toppings cooked right into the batter. In the Netherlands, the dish is as popular as pizza or hamburgers in America, and is eaten primarily for lunch or dinner.

Mom Dutch PancakeThe diner-style restaurant is nestled in a small strip mall off of Crowchild at 54 Ave. On weekends it is best to go for a late lunch; the restaurant is packed all morning. The restaurant is decorated with little Dutch touches, from trinkets in the front display, to stroop, Dutch sugar syrup on every table. The restaurant’s tea and coffee both come with Dutch cookies, made with ginger and a variety of other spices. The restaurant even sells Dutch candy, such as dubbel zouts, a “double salt” black licorice.

The pannekoeks themselves are colossal, and fill the very large plate they come on. The restaurant offers eighty varieties of sweet and savoury pannekoeks, as well as a “build your own” option. Some options include the potato, onion, bacon and cheese, or ham, mushroom, egg, and cheese. For those with more of a sweet tooth, there is a black forest pannekoek and the current monthly special of fresh raspberry pannekoek, with chocolate whipping cream.

The black forest pannekoek comes with a dark cherry pie filling on top, garnished with mounds of whipping cream and ice-cream balls, and drizzled with chocolate sauce. It is safe to say that

when going to Pfanntastic Pannekoek Haus it is best to go with a hearty appetite. This dish was especially filling, and was simply put; delicious, sweet, and huge. The chocolate sauce was perfect with the cherries for creating that perfect black forest look, and the whip cream balanced out the almost overwhelming richness of the dish. The pannekoek was very sweet, and for those looking for something less sweet, it would be recommended to get the dish without ice-cream. After going to Pfanntastic Pannekoek Haus one will not need to eat for hours, yet despite the size of their dishes, it is hard to find one uncleaned returning to the kitchen.

The restaurant is open Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., on SaturdayBlack Cherry Pancake

from 8am-8pm, and on Sunday from 8am-3pm, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

For authenticity, the owner of Pfanntastic Pannekoek Haus was initially trained at a pannekoek restaurant in the Netherlands, and they are the only restaurant in Canada with training in the method. No matter what flavours appeal the most, and whatever combination craved Pfanntastic Pannekoek Haus will have the perfect pannekoek, living up to being “A Dutch dining treat!”
