Looking for new movies to watch this year? Well, there are no worries as this year will be very active in terms of entertainment. Besides the main, most popularized sequels such as Mockingjay and Divergent, there are many other movies that people may have not heard of. If you are looking for promising films to see in theatres that aren’t mainstream, enjoy these summaries and trailers and see if they pique your interests.
1. Kingsman
Looking for an action packed spy classic? Kingsman: The Secret Service is the movie for you. The story — which consists of an environment involving high tech gadgets and lots of explosions– compacts the process of a teenage boy becoming a spy under intensive training into a film by the creators of X-men: Days of the Future Past. Personally, I am anticipating the release of this movie as it seems thrilling through the trailer (however, I have really weird taste so it may not apply to some folks). This movie, however, is definitely not for all ages, judging from the violence in some trailers. Although it may not be for the family, teens could probably enjoy this movie with friends and adults.
2. Jupiter Ascending
This movie caught my attention in that it had an intriguing setting and the storyline seemed interesting as it involved fantasy and a hierarchical society. The plot seems very generic though, featuring a protagonist who is ‘the one’ and a battle to protect that special person.
3. Project Almanac
Watching this trailer, I was immediately reminded of Back to the Future as it involved travelling in time and creating ripple effects, causing serious consequences. This movie seems to have a small portion of horror and serious drama, however, overall it looks to be a fun roller coaster thrill based off trailers and summaries.
4. Still Alice
Still Alice is a movie on the life of a woman who develops a sickness: Alzheimer’s disease. Knowing she has it, she tries to hide the facts, however, reality couldn’t let the truth stay hidden, leading to a revealing of the facts. For drama lovers and those who sympathize with entertainment, this story is a great one to watch with friends who feel the same as you.
5. Inside Out
Every movie list isn’t complete without a fun animated original from Pixar! This year, Pixar is releasing an animation film about how emotions, quite literally, control you. In this movie, emotions take on an avatar and work together to control a human’s actions, however, the protagonist of this story has emotions that don’t play well together. Personally, I find this film to be interesting as I’m curious as to how Pixar will form this vague idea into a storyline worth watching.
Breakfast is important and absolutely necessary, and that is NOT something I believe to be debatable. Therefore, the question comes down to: What should I have for breakfast? I could have cereal and an egg. I could have toast and peanut butter. I could have oatmeal and a smoothie. OR, I could have a banana-mango smoothie with an egg cooked in a ring of leftover mashed sweet potatoes.
Personally, that sounds like a pretty good option to me. And after this week, I can confirm that option to be AMAZING.
The procedure is simple:
A few pointers:
ENJOY!!!

A good 27 days have passed in this New Year and with the pressure of exams off my shoulders, I still felt like I had something I needed to finish. So I checked and found out that I had a mini-series I had to finish. So, before I leave this mini-series hanging any longer, I present the crush: the casual, the best, and the one that works.
Ah crushes: one of life’s biggest teases when we’re growing up. Does she like me? Does he not? It’s a painstaking guessing game that we all get involved in sooner or later. In my experience of rolling the dice to the game plenty of times, I’ve been able to pick up three types of crushes: the casual, the best, and the one that works. Each crush is significantly different from the other as well as unique, so just in case you have a crush and don’t know which is which, or if you’re just looking for a fun post about crushes, then this post is for you.
1) The Casual Crush
Song choice: AJ Rafael’s We Could Happen because it’s light, easy to sing to and fun to listen to when thinking about your casual crush
Crush information: Just in case you haven’t read through my post about the casual crush, the casual crush is a crush that stands by its name. Casual crushes don’t have a lot of spark because you don’t know a lot about your crush and your crush might not know a lot about you, but yet it’s the things you do know about them that keeps the crush intact. Your casual crush hooks you in with their good looks, pretty smile, and sincerity when they’re with their friends. Notice how the vocabulary isn’t that powerful because that’s what it’s supposed to mean: casual crushes are sparks that will either die out or ignite a fire.
Typical casual crushes: classmates, people around the hallway in your school, those students that you only know the name of, that one really attractive person in either the hallway or in one of your classes
2) The Best Crush
Song choice: Parachute’s She is Love due to the lyrics of the song. Take a listen and you’ll see what I mean.
Crush information: They know everything about you, and you know everything about them. You’re into practically the same interests, enjoy time with each other, and from my experience, trust each other with HUGE secrets. That’s a quick definition of a best crush. Best crushes can feel like the greatest chance for success due to the fact that yes, the two of you practically should be dating already, but keep in mind that going for a best crush also poses the greatest risk. No matter the length of time you’ve been with them, and it takes a considerably long time to have this kind of crush on someone, you’re planning a new world of pain and happiness altogether, so before you stupidly risk everything on the likelihood you might be theirs for a long time, think it through for a while. If you’re willing to risk it all, then go ahead. But if you’re not, there’s nothing wrong with that: you’ll still have a close friend by your side.
Typical best crushes: pretty much anyone whom you’ve known for a considerable amount of time. For example, a best friend for longer than 2-3 years
3) The Crush that Works
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5tTRaq3E8I
Song choice: Anna Scouten’s cover of First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes, accompanied with one of the cutest couples on Youtube, Pewdie (Felix) and Cutie (Marzia). Do I really need to explain why? Listen to the song with the video and you will understand.
Crush information: The title is self-explanatory: you did it. The girl/guy of your dreams, all of your struggles paid off. From here on out, your days will be devoted to finding everything that you can to make them happy. At the same time, it’ll be hard to make sure you don’t screw up because you have their heart in your hands, despite what anyone else might say. Your first/second/third date will always feel like a new chapter in a book and every heartache between the two of you will be the plot twist. Every stuffed bear you’ll give them, every tender kiss they’ll give back, it’ll always bring you back to this thought, “I did it.”
Typical crushes that work: it’s not a game of chance. If there’s a strong romantic connection between the two of you, it’s going to work. Trust me.
2015 is a whole new year of opportunities so I’m not sure how long I’m going to keep Dean’s playlist alive, but I like it. Alright, like Bryan Singer did with X-MEN, Days of Future Past, it’s time to start again.
Are there any Fall Out Boy enthusiasts out there? If you are, you’d probably know that the newest Fall Out Boy album was released just recently. The band’s album has been anxiously awaited by fans around the world. After listening to the songs non-stop, I have successfully come to the conclusion that every single song on the album is perfection. Please keep in mind that some serious fangirling will be happening throughout this post.

The album starts off with an upbeat song called Irresistible. Everything about this song gives me the chills. It’ll have you singing along within the first few verses. I love the way it captivates you. It sucks you into the album. There truly isn’t any better song to start off the album.
It’s then followed by American Beauty/American Psycho. This one I’m going to have to admit is one of my least favorites in the album. But even though it is one of my least favorites, there’s still nothing bad I have to say about it. It’s catchy and easy to sing along to.
Centuries is third in the album. It was the first song to be released from the album and it blew me away. After listening to it the first time, I couldn’t stop myself, I broke the replay button. It got me hyped up for the release of the album. This song blows me away each and every time I listen to it. Patrick Stump’s voice is something I can only describe as angelic. This song is golden. It will be remembered for centuries. (Hehe, get it?)
This next song called The Kids Aren’t Alright is one of my favourites off the album. It’s a song so relevant to us teens nowadays, not to mention the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. Everything about this song makes me swoon a million times over.
Please mind my fangirling over Uma Thurman, the song and not the actress. Though I must say, she’s quite fabulous too. Anyways, what do I have to say about the song? Absolutely everything. My goodness it’s amazing. There is a science behind a good song. That includes head bobbing, foot tapping, bad dancing, and overly obnoxious singing, all which is present when listening to the absolutely incredible song. Or is that just me? Again, I cannot put into words how great Uma Thurman is.
Jet Pack Blues may just be my number one favorite song of the album. This song goes straight to my heart. Let me just say, Uma Thurman is a 10 out of 10 for sure, but JPB holds a special place about 5 spots over Uma Thurman. My heart fills with what I can only describe as utter and pure joy. Nothing compares to it. This song is 2 minutes and 59 seconds of audible angle tears. Is that even a thing? I don’t even know, that’s the only possible way of describing how amazing Jet Pack Blues is.
Novocaine is the perfect head banger song. If you’re into crazy dancing and singing into hair brushes, this is the song for you. I can tell you that I have jumped on my bed singing Novocaine into my hairbrush when I’m home alone in need for a stress reliever. You can sing out all that pent up stress I’m sure you have from exam break. This is the type of song infused with a heck of a lot of rock so you can definitely rock out to Novocaine. It’s so highly catchy and there’s no way you won’t like this song.
This song is for those firework and freedom lovers, Fourth of July. The instrumental is so pleasing to my ears and Patrick Stump’s voice is absolutely melodic. The chorus, my gosh the chorus is so captivating, like nothing I’ve ever listened to. It’s a mix of pop and rock, something that’ll please most listeners no matter their usual genre of music. This song is sure to bring a smile to my face no matter how many times I listen to it.
Favorite record is one of my favourite records of the AB/AP album. This song is light and upbeat, quite different from the other songs of the album that have a lot of drums and bass to it. The seems to be a bit of electro which is quite a change to the usual rock, a great change nonetheless. It’s different in such a great way and it’s just something definitely worth listening to.
Featured in a recent Disney movie, Big Hero 6, Immortals is a song to be heard. The song has this sort of electro vibe to it. The lyrics to this song fit in perfectly to the movie and is such a great choice to both the album ad the movie. Much like the previous song, the electro is such a great change to the previous albums.
This next song has a great bass and drum part throughout the entire song, Twin Skeletons (Hotel in NYC). The song begins with a sort of Halloween vibe, sounding like the Spooky Spooky Skeletons song. The after bits change greatly. Like Novocaine, this is also a great head banger song. There are so many great spots in this song that you could totally jam out to. This song has incorporated so many things into it, there are bits of Halloween, wonderful bits of bass and drums, and a lot of their old vibe. A song I definitely think is great for all ages. The lyrics are on a whole other level.
Overall, American Beauty/American Psycho is a 10 out of 10. I would definitely recommend it to everyone, whether you’re just getting into the rock scene or have been a fan for years, this album is absolutely amazing. It holds a spot at the top of my list of music albums.

Having performed for former premier Alison Redford, Prince William and Kate Middleton during their stop at the stampede during the summer a few years back and being a part of the Young Canadians, Mary Kate Aquino is quite the bright young star. I went to junior high with her, so I knew a little bit about her and how talented she was at singing. Today, I bring you her first ever single ‘Trouble’. I first heard of it through social media, and in my interest, purchased it as soon as it released. Personally, I absolutely love the song, and her strong vocals. It takes great talent to sing the way she does, and I know she’ll be one to watch for in the future. Below is the audio for her song, please support her by buying this on iTunes or the Google play store, you won’t regret it! She is just one example of the many rising and shining young talents in the city that I’m proud to be a part of.

With the recent announcements that Target, Mexx, Jacob, Smart Set and Sony are all closing up their Canadian stores, it really got me thinking. Despite a primarily American-dominated retail scene, there’s more than one US chain that I really wish would come to Canada or expand their already-existing Canadian operations. I still maintain that we should be supporting local shops, whether it be in groceries, clothing or in virtually everything else, but if these stores were made available to me here in Calgary, I would definitely buy from them.
I first went into Charming Charlie in Phoenix and it was somewhat surreal. The location I was at was huge; two full floors and a bit overwhelming, to be honest. The store is mostly accessories, be that jewellery, bags, shoes and whatnot, but also has a small amount of apparel. Charming Charlie is most appealing because they are really affordable. I bought a really cute long necklace with a turtle pendant back at the end of June. I wear it a lot and it’s still in really good shape. For the $8.00 I payed for it, it was well worth it! Charming Charlie currently has four locations in Canada; there are two in BC and two in Ontario. I really hope that they open up a Calgary location sometime in the future.
Hot Topic
If there was a Hot Topic in Calgary, I would be broke all the time. Specializing in pop culture and music merchandise, Hot Topic is my #1 source for band shirts, really neat socks and pretty much anything else related to most of my fandoms. They carry some really unique items that you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else, not to mention that they always play good music and their staff are always really well-informed and helpful. The only two locations currently in Canada are in Toronto and Niagara. Supposedly they’re expanding further, but until then, I guess I’m just going to have to continue ordering online.
Nordstrom Rack
Essentially a more upscale version of Winners or Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack offers lots of brand-name goods at discounted p
rices. It’s definitely on the more expensive side, but it’s definitely a lot less expensive than actually shopping at Nordstrom. Since expanding into Canada, Nordstrom has only opened one location (Chinook Centre) but has plans to open another five locations between now and 2017. If it catches on, perhaps we may see them opening up their more affordable outlets sometime in the future.
Hello again aspiring debaters, I am back! This week, we’ll be focusing on how to write an effective and powerful speech.

First things first, a speech is not meant for you to read off of word for word. If you ever go to a debate and recite a speech, don’t expect to win, no matter how amazing the speech was. A speech in debate is used as a tool to help you, not something that you should solely rely on. So make sure to practice a lot. The speech shouldn’t be memorized either, but if the speech were to be taken away from you, you should still be able to speak on it using your points and format from the speech. There are, as always, a few steps in making a good speech.
1. Do your research
In order to have a speech which is convincing, and strong, you must have your facts. A speech filled with fluff will not win. Do deep and thorough research for both sides of the debate, opposition and proposition, know points of controversy on the matter, and the weakest parts of your speech. However, while you need large amounts of knowledge, make sure that your speech is not overloaded with facts and statistics. No one wants to hear a 8 minute speech firing out all the stats from the last 25 years. Integrate your research into the speech.
2. Know the format
Most debates have a certain format of speech which you should follow. To check what style is expected, you can always go onto the ADSA website and check the Judge’s Rubric. Yep, that’s right, go ahead and see exactly what the judges are looking for and form your speech around that.
3. Write your speech
When it comes to writing a speech for debate, the process is a little different than essay writing in school. We’ll be breaking one of the biggest rules, don’t write like you talk. When you write a speech for debate, you want to write exactly like you talk. Incorporate your own style into the speech. Dictate the speech to yourself, your printed speech is just a tool to help you remember the flow of the speech.
4. Intro
So now comes the actual parts of the speech. First of all, the intro, this is where you introduce yourself, the topic, the terms and your general arguments. One of the most important things which you must remember to include in your introduction is signposts. Signposts are an absolutely essential part of debate. This is where you give catchy names and introduce your three main pillars of argument. Those names, or signposts will be brought back up throughout the rest of the debate, make sure that the judges are aware of what they are.

5. Body
So once you’ve introduced your case, its time to dive into the case itself. There’s not much to say about the body, just make sure it’s organized and there is plenty of signposting.
6. Conclusion
And, of course, you need a conclusion, this is a short ending to the speech around 1 minute long. Here, you will recount all points made in the debate and once again push the fact that yours was the stronger case. Make sure to thank the judges and your opponents for coming.
7. Prepare
And lastly, as with everything, once you have written your speech, prepare, prepare and prepare some more. It is cliche, but practice does make perfect.
Over the years, Calgary has slowly shaped itself to be a Canadian hub that has captured the attention of various organizations and, in turn, many new and exciting events are now held here. Last year, some of my favourite events included the Comic Expo, Beakerhead, and the Holt Renfrew: Lock into Paris Fashion Show. This coming year holds much promise for more great occasions that are sure to be memorable. Mark your calendars and get set for a great year of festivities.
Stephen Hough and Valentina Lisitsa and the CPO – January 23-24 and June 5-6, respectively

If you follow me on Twitter, my gushing about the CPO’s 2014-15 season may now be a bit redundant. However, it’s no denying that their repertoire selection has been top-notch, and the guest artists that they have invited to come in are also amazing. Both Hough and Lisitsa are accomplished pianists who have made names for themselves all around the world due to their musical capabilities and I’m so exciting to see them live. Hough will be playing Beethoven’s Piano Concert no. 1 in C-major, something that I am currently working on, and Lisitza will be playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto no. 2.
Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo – April 16-19

You can’t make a post like this without mentioning Comic Con at least once. Having met Matt Smith and Karen Gillan at last year’s event, which was my first, I absolutely cannot wait to see what this year has in store. The guest list for this year includes Lana Parrilla of Once Upon a Time, Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead, Tom Kenny of Spongebob and more. Plus, since it’s so early on into the year, you can bet on more great artists to sign on in the upcoming months. Tickets are already available on the Calgary Expo website.
Sun and Salsa Festival – July 19th, 2015

I’m pretty sure everyone has heard of Lilac Fest (May 31st, 2015), but this Kensington event will redefine your festival experience. With hundreds of vendors and shops within the area, guests are invited to purchase chips and try out the various salsa stations along the route, all made by local organizations and restaurants. Enjoy a day of Latin American culture, live entertainment, and delicious salsa. At the end of the event, vote for your favourite salsa on their website. Bring a few bucks to purchase chips, or buy your own beforehand.

Opera in the Village – Date TBA

I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at this event in August 2014 with Youth Central and we had tons of fun making and selling popcorn, as well as making run-for-its in the pouring rain (which I welcomed with open arms). It is definitely one of my favourite projects to volunteer at, and I don’t doubt that I would jump at the opportunity if it came again this year, coupled with actually seeing the show. This arts event takes place in the newly revamped East Village and features talented singers from Calgary Opera performing elaborate shows alongside a small orchestra. Dates and itineraries have yet to be announced, so keep your eyes peeled in the upcoming months!
More details on their website.
Beakerhead – September 16th-20th

Another terrific event I volunteered at last year, there were so many cool things I saw and experienced and I am eagerly awaiting what the new year will mean for Beakerhead. To read my post on my volunteer experience, click here.

Remember the excitement people felt when Target announced that they were opening stores in Canada just a few short years ago? Well, I guess the hyped feeling people were experiencing soon died as Target stores in Canada were incomparable to the American Target. As people hoped for the wide-ranged products at reasonable prices, it just didn’t happen. As a result, Target has been losing everyday according to Target Corporation CEO Brian Cornell during his interview with CTV news.

In addition, it was said that Target was struggling ever since Day 1 after purchasing more than 200 Zellers locations from Hudson’s Bay Co, replacing the labels that used to state “Everything from A-Z”. Expecting to make great profit like they do in the United States, Target seemed to a bit of too ambitious. Due to their ambition and lack of readiness, numerous Canadian Targets faced inventory problems, resulting in empty shelves and frustrated customers. Not only were some of the shelves empty, when Target came to Canada, they forgot to bring the outlet prices with them.

As a result of the problems Target is facing, they are going into liquidation sales and eventually leaving Canada!
Am I the only person that had never heard of Blue Monday until this year? When my Twitter stream was clogged up with a flurry of articles and quips on the subject a few days ago, it certainly seemed that way. A quick Google search revealed that the third Monday of each January is supposedly the most depressing day of the year – and everybody was certainly talking about it – but I couldn’t help but question the validity of such a bold claim.
Now, we’ve all heard the stats: January is the month with the most break-ups. It’s the month of failed resolutions, post-holiday slump, slow business. For most youth, it also brings the much-dreaded period of midterms or final exams. There are many reasons why many people may be feeling “down” this time of year. However, is there any real reason to point to one day and name it as the most depressing?
The term “Blue Monday” was coined in 2005 by a holiday company known as Sky Travel, and the fact that it was originally used in a press release should probably be the first red flag. The company claimed to have calculated this date by means of an equation, one that included factors such as “time since Christmas”, “weather conditions”, “motivational levels”, and “time since failing new year’s resolutions”. First of all — how is it even possible to determine “motivation levels” of an entire population? How can that be extrapolated to compare to motivation during the rest of the year? How you account for various other factors that will influence your results from one year to the next? To say the least, it’s puzzling.

It turns out that I’m not the only skeptic – since its inception, both the term “Blue Monday” and the logic behind it have been largely criticised. In fact, many people call it pseudoscience. So why do we continue to flaunt it, even after a decade? It turns out that somewhere along the way, people have become rather attracted to the idea of antagonising one day of the year and complaining about it with what is viewed as complete justification. It’s a frightening example of how much power a PR campaign has to influence culture.
Maybe January 19th, 2015 was a great day for you. Maybe it wasn’t. Just remember that there’s no correlation between the location of the earth in its orbit and how likely you are to feel “depressed” — true clinical depression is a complex condition that is affected by countless factors; internal, external, genetic and otherwise. It’s not something that can be accurately calculated for an entire population with one nonsensical formula.
Happy 10th birthday, Blue Monday. Hopefully we’ll have gained some rationality by your 11th.

“Pizza is my life man. I posted a picture of pizza with a transparent background on tumblr once, and it got like 20 000 notes. It was my 15 minutes of fame.”
