What to see in YYC: Weekend Preview Jan 23-25, 2015

With the impeding doom of Diploma exams still looming over our shoulders, it will come to no surprise if the most of us choose to stay home and study over the weekend. But for those who have caught up with their studying, or are extremely confident in themselves, Calgary still has an abundant of events for a fun night out.

1. MRU Conservatory Open House

Whether or not you’re interested in studying at the Mount Royal University, you should still come out to the open house to enjoy awesome choral and orchestral performances under the roof of the newly constructed Conservatory and Bella Concert Hall. Watch for our blog post on the open house next week in case you can’t make it. For more information visit the MRU website.

When: Saturday, Jan. 24, 1-4 p.m.

2. North East: The Show

A show tailored for those who grew up or are still living in the North-East quadrant of Calgary, this comedy improv is sure to hit home runs on those oh-so relatable issues. Performed by Andrew Phung and Jamie Northan, this show may contain some language that is not suitable for young kids. Tickets and other information can be found on the theatre company website, Loose Moose.

When: Friday & Saturday, Jan. 23 & 24, 10:30 p.m.

3. Symons Valley Ranch Ice Festival

During the winter, Lake Louise is famous for its pristine frozen lake and its awe-inspiring ice sculptures. But now you can save that drive up the mountains and enjoy the icy view right in Calgary. The Symons Valley Ranch Market is hosting an Ice Sculpture Festival bundled with various fun activities from January 17 to February 8, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It’s a great event for some family bonding time, and a chance to shop at the Symons Valley Ranch Market. For more information you can visit the Symons Valley Ranch website.

4. UrineTown: A Musical

You guessed it: a musical about urinals and toilets and love. I’m not forcing you to watch this masterpiece, but you should really watch this masterpiece. Already in town for 2 weeks, this production is about to close up shop. The latest you can catch them is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets and other information can be found at the Front Row Centre website front page.

When:  Jan.23, Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 24, Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Where: Beddington Heights Community Arts Centre, 375 Bermuda Dr. N.W.

5. Beneath Springhill: The Maurice Ruddick Story

Written and performed by Beau Dixon, Beneath Springhill tells the amazing story of 7 miners trapped under the Springhill Mine, and Maurice Ruddick’s adamant will to survive. This one-man show tugs at the heart strings and raises important issues in society. Tickets and more Information are available at the High Performance Rodeo website.

When: Jan. 23, Friday at 12:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. and Jan 24, Saturday at 12:10 p.m.

Where: Lunchbox Theatre, 115 9 Ave. S.E.

Cost: $27 for students, $30 for adults

 

It doesn’t hurt to take the occasional study breaks, and with these great events and more on our calendar, I’m sure you can find a excuse to leave the house.
