Ingredients:

2 eggs

1 bell pepper

A block of cheese

Cooking oil

Parsley flakes and thyme leaves

Directions:

Before starting: Preheat a cooking pan on medium heat, adding enough cooking oil to coat but not soak the eggs.

1. In a bowl, break and scramble the two eggs.

2. Shred the cheese block in a separate bowl to the amount you desire to have in your omelette. I personally shred only about a handful, but if you want more of less that is up to you.

3. Chop up at an eighth of the bell pepper into little pieces.

4. In the bowl with the scrambled eggs, add the chopped bell pepper, pinches of parsley flakes and thyme leaves for seasoning.

5.  Put the mixture onto the cooking pan.

6. Add the cheese to it by sprinkling the cheese around. Watch for the edges, if they turn white and are bubbling, they are becoming cooked. Let it melt.

7. Fry the egg for 3-4 minutes, and test to see if you can flip it by nudging the sides with a spatula. When you are able to do so, flip the omelette in half.

8. Cook for another minute, then flip the entire omelette onto the other side.

9.  Wait until both sides are fully cooked before turning off heat and placing the omelette on a plate.

10. Your omelette is finally ready, eat and enjoy!

I hope you all enjoy trying out this recipe, all amounts of ingredients can be varied depending on your tastes. Now let’s ace those exams!

How do writers feel when people read their writing?

How do writers feelOriginal Image

Hello reader!

I often wonder about who you are, where you’re from and how you feel. Each view on a post represents someone out there. Perhaps we know each other, maybe we’re just strangers. Either way, the relationship between a reader and a writer is quite special. Reading someone’s writing is like looking through a window into our lives. When you read between the lines, you can gain an understanding of who we are even if we’ve never met.

There are the moments when a particular sentence or passage touches you because it’s said in a way that you see yourself in those words. As a writer, that’s powerful to understand that our writing had an impact on someone else. After all, it’s magical how these lines and scribbles called writing can evoke feelings when combined properly.

My attitude towards writing continues to change as I grow up and experience more. I was interested in how other writers felt when people read their writing. Here’s what YAA bloggers had to say:

yowoto-young-boy-thinking-while-writing-with-pencil

I feel elated when people read my writing. If they comment positively, it improves my day significantly because it shows that I have been successful in connecting with my audience and giving them the message I had intended to give. I take negative criticisms in a constructive manner and apply those to the next article I write to improve it.” – Gayarthi Menon

It’s a sense of empowerment. Especially as a young writer, it feels powerful to know that my voice can be heard. As youth, our perspectives matter. It is a chance for us to eradicate the stigma that youth are disinterested in intellectual topics. Yet, here we are, exploring the beyond. Therefore, the negatives never outweigh the positives. Of course, I am going to receive negative feedback. But I will learn from them. However, it is still my voice that I want to convey. It is what I know best and they say to write what you know.” – Rebecca Yangbigstock-girl-dreams-reading-the-book-15369656-2

Writing is an adventure. When you first start a draft, there may be some part of you that will try to cater to a specific audience or maybe you’ll even write what you think other people want to hear. Many people, specifically me, have a ton of opinions and sometimes those opinions aren’t exactly popular ones.

But to me, writing is about expression, it’s about finding yourself more than it is about entertainment. There is no truer way to understand yourself than the moment when you see a phrase written down, and published to the Internet, and you are okay with knowing that your words will be there forever. When you don’t get that feeling, you rewrite and edit until you do. Sometimes, you discover thoughts or opinions that you didn’t know you had before. Being able to entertain others is an added bonus.

When you receive negative feedback, it’s a sign that you’ve done something right, that you’ve made a strong enough point that the reader has been compelled into taking time out of their day to say something to you. Positive feedback means that you’ve helped someone, made that person laugh/cry/surprised, or simply had enough personality show through that he/she couldn’t help but share his/her glee. Either way, these comments let you know that there are people out there who you’ve influenced (even if it’s only in some small way).

I’m a super verbal person and writing is a way for me to get my thoughts out there instead of having to explain the thoughts 24 times to 24 different people. Having family and friends comment is great, because it shows that they took the time out of their day to read it and accept your views. At the end of the day, the feedback (or lack of feedback) you get on your posts might not tell you anything. Maybe there weren’t a lot of readers the week your post was published, maybe there was another post hogging the spotlight, or whatever other reasons. At the end of your adventure, if you’ve come out of it a better person, that’s all that really matters.” – Ailin Li ????????????

I also asked my other friends what they thought:

I remember the first blog I wrote and my Grade 8 teacher’s daughter commented and it made me so happy. She took time out of her day to not only read my writing but comment and try to help me out of a tough situation. As time went on, people stopped reading my blog, but it didn’t make that much of a difference to me because I was expressing my own feelings. When I had no other person to rely on I had my writing.

As high school came along, more people cared and mattered. For me it became a form of communication. Especially for the things I would hesitate to say in person which turns out to be a lot, I could do it easily through writing. My texts and messages are paragraph after paragraph. My friend made me a beautiful little quote card. It says: “Your writing matters. Your writing is your art and what makes you happy.”

As I was going through tough times, one of the only ways to get to me was through writingI luckily have not gotten any negative feedback on my writing, although I know there are many improvement to be made. I have restricted myself recently from posting blogs because I feel like it’s a way of publicizing my feelings. But I’ve been looking at it the wrong way! Yes, I write for others. But I write for myself too. It makes me happy and so I will do it more often!” – Nabila Esmail
tumblr_ndz4kard5S1qd9a66o1_500

Writing has a purpose, whether it be for an audience or an escape from reality. Some people write under forced circumstances. Some people write for leisure. Whatever the reason, writing often exposes a side of us that not many people know, even some of our very close friends. When I first meet someone, I notice the way they present themselves and adjust myself accordingly. For example, if a person is very talkative, I will take the time to listen and respond with questions to let continue the conversation.

But when I’m writing, I am talking to myself. I’m using my perspective and my thoughts and writing them down. So whenever a close friend/family member comments on my writing, I am… flustered. I’m not sure if that’s the right word, but I feel embarrassed. How I write is so different than how I present myself, I feel as if I’m fake towards people. I also feel that they are closer to me because I just shared something of myself with them, and it’s pure.” – Crystal Hon

Conclusion

At our most recent YAA meeting, we were shown some stats about the blog. Above is a map detailing where our readers come from and it just goes to show how far-reaching of an influence writing can have. Hopefully you learned something about the special relationship that readers and writers have.

After talking to other writers about their experiences, I’ve realized something about myself too. I was once embarrassed to have people comment on my writing. I used to write only for personal pleasure or for expressing my feelings, but I’ve gradually realized that I write for an audience as well. Someone’s reading these very words right now, and if you are that person, then I appreciate you taking some time out of your day to do so.

Writing connects us with others. It is empowering. It is an adventure and a form of expression. It is art. It has purpose. With that said, all that’s left is to continue writing. The journey doesn’t stop here. black and white hands retro feathers grayscale ink german writing letter 2560x1600 wallpaper_wallpaperswa.com_92

Netflix Obsessions: Liberal Arts

0

Exam break is a great time to binge watch some Netflix if you aren’t writing any diplomas, but sometimes it’s not too easy to find something worthwhile to watch. I recently discovered the wonderful movie that is Liberal Arts. It is an independent Rom-Com starring Elizabeth Olsen and Josh Radnor, and a great way to spend your afternoon.

The movie is about a middle aged man named Jesse, who returns to his Ohio college to attend a professor’s retirement party. At said party, he manages to fall for a student named Zibby. Liberal Arts is a fairly straightforward movie that deals with growing up and comes with a few laughs and cute moments. With a 16 year age difference between the characters, it would have been easy to unintentionally give off the wrong impression and make the movie seem more creepy than anything, but the balance between Zibby’s maturity and youthfulness, multiple love interests, and the other themes dropped throughout the film make it just right.

Although there is definitely a romantic aspect to the film, it is not the only theme in the movie. Liberal Arts also draws attention other things such as the anxiety and depression that can come with transitioning from child to adult by showcasing a college student named Dean who battles with mental illness. The movie is quirky, but at the same time, very realistic and relatable; something I find important in a film.  My only complaints about this movie are that Elizabeth Olsen’s acting was at times sub par, and I wish there were a few more jokes. Other than that, I easily say that I enjoyed this movie!

Huzzah! Let them kingdom rejoice, for I have figured out how to make the pictures non-blurry so you can all enjoy the wonderful discoveries I’ve made on my Pinterest adventures. Now, I will take a moment to apologize for not publishing a weekly Pinterest inspiration post last week. It was a terribly stressful time what with the English diploma fiasco and various other life events, but I assure you that I’m back to my regular, blog-posting self! As a candidate for “Crazy Cat Lady,” I love the promise for my future this comic holds. The unexpected turn taken in the fifth panel brought a smile to my face and the smile remained until the last frame. Unconventional takes on classical tales never fail to amuse me, and this comic also succeeded in bringing a warm, fuzzy feeling to my heart (no pun intended).

Most people have a fairly good understanding of their skin type due to years of trial and error, but it’s still good to make sure once in a while. Knowing your skin type will allow you to choose the best types of moisturizer for your skin, and allow you to work out a skin care regimen to suit your needs.

Being the meticulous designer and organizer with a short attention span that I am, non-permanent decorating tips are my best friend. I have many of these reserved for when I go off to university, as you’re not allowed to mark up those walls, either. All of these are very simple and will not cost much, so I feel that they are perfect for the student and apartment renter.

Most annoying pop songs

I used to be a HUGE fan of pop music until the summer of 2014. Once I was introduced to other genres like rock alternative and punk rock, I began to notice how annoying some of the pop songs were! Here are a few of those songs:

1. We are never ever getting back together – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift in We are never ever getting back together

I absolutely love love love Taylor Swift. We share the same hair problems, her country music is amazing, and I was first introduced to Hollywood by her song “Love Story”. I have liked all her albums where the genre was country, but now she has started moving on to the pop music genre. At first it wasn’t too bad, it sounded like the usual pop songs, and then she released the song “We are never ever getting back together.” The first time I listened to it, I was a little taken aback by the huge difference between her country music and this song. Then I realized that she was talking about her ex-boyfriends. Honey, we all know that you don’t love your exes anymore. Stop spreading the hate.

2. Shake it off – Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift in Shake it off

As Taylor Swift released her new album, 1989, I was quite excited, because no matter how much I don’t like her music, I’m still a Swiftie at heart! The album was quite good and I had to say that my personal favourite is “Blank space”. Then I came upon “Shake it off”, and I did a double-take! This did not sound like Taylor at all. The voice was high pitched and unpleasant, and girl, stop trying to sound like someone else!
Now although I downgraded these songs of hers, I adore Taylor Swift. She is an inspiring role model, and I love the way she carries herself with such poise and grace, and she can totally rock the hipster look. Keep being yourself Taylor!

3. Come and get it – Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez in Come and get it

Another favourite singer and Disney star of mine is Selena Gomez. I grew up watching her in the Disney tv show “Wizards of Waverly Place” and I wanted to be exactly like her when I grew up. Her music is quite inspiring as well, especially during her days of “Selena Gomez & the Scene”. Recently, she released “Come and get it”, a song with Indian music. The song sounds like a Bollywood wannabe song. She tried to dance with a few Bollywood steps, but was unable to pull them off. She is a lovely person, but unfortunately cannot be Bollywood material. Selena is great singer and dance, but she needs to stick Hollywood and hip-hop.

4. Call me maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen

Carly Rae Jepsen in Call me maybe

“Call me maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen is also one of the most annoying pop songs. That was the first time I had ever heard of her and it was not a very good first impression. The song is whiny and way too straight forward. It was much overplayed and actually caused me to stop listening to the radio. However, Carly is gorgeous and a really good singer, but in my opinion, she can do a lot more in her music career.

Top 5 childhood books

I am a bookworm, and as a child, I read as many books as I could every single day. In fact I loved some books so much that I can read them again and again, and if I had any of these 5 books in front of me, I would read them all over again.

1. Secret Garden – Frances Hodgson Burnett

secretgarden
source

The Secret Garden is a storyabout a beautiful friendship between a young girl and two young boys, which takes place in England. The girl, who is born in India, is taken to London to live with her uncle in a huge mansion. The lonely girl soon finds two new friends, a secret garden, and a wonderful long-lasting friendship.

2. Oliver Twist – Charles Dickens

source

Now I’m sure that many of you have heard of this novel, and some of you have watched the musical “Oliver!” as well. It is a story, which takes place in London. Oliver Twist is a young boy, who lives in an orphanage. He soon runs away to the city, where he is exposed to the crime world of London. This is a great story which not only shows the beautiful side of London, but also takes us into the dark side of London.

3. The Famous Five – Enid Blyton

source

The Famous Five is a series about five children and incidents that occur around them. They go around from camping trips to dark caves to beaches, solving petty crimes and mysteries that appear in their everyday life.

4. Nancy Drew – Edward Stratmeyer (under the pen name of Carolyn Keene)

nancy_drew
source

Nancy Drew is a series of novels about a young teenage girl, who solves mysteries with the help of her two best friends, Bess and George. Filled with suspense and thrill, a Nancy Drew book is something to curl up with on a cold winter’s day with hot chocolate.

5. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain

source

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel about a young boy and his notorious pranks. His simple life is turned topsy-turvy when he witnesses a murder one night, and he is soon on the run from the murderer, with his friend Huckleberry Finn. This thriller keeps us on the edge of our seats till the end, and it is an amazing story to read anywhere, any time of the day.

Classic rock for the disgruntled modern listener

As I have repeatedly made clear to all of my friends and family, I have vowed nearly absolute hatred for pop music. I can’t stand how everything is a carbon copy of everything else and there’s nearly no more real instruments played on mainstream radio waves. This is NOT to say that all pop music is unoriginal, lacks musical integrity or talent playing it, but to be honest, I really do dislike it with a burning passion.

Today is just one of those days where I’m feeling so strongly about the subject that I am refusing to listen to anything less than 15 years old. It is on days like today where I go through my iTunes library and create for myself a little musical haven; a happy place, if you will, of music from a time where music meant more than just corporate earnings.

Moneytalks – AC/DC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xD5dHC2jgw

AC/DC is iconic, and Moneytalks was the band’s highest charting US single. Probably one of the only songs that every hit the Top 40 you’ll ever catch me listening to.

Mama Kin – Aerosmith

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcNGjUEkhkM

This was probably the first Aerosmith song I appreciated for the guitar more than anything else.

Mama Let Him Play – Doucette

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfGTA-kkf2o

One thing I love more than classic rock: CANADIAN classic rock. With Justin Bieber and Nickelback, Canada really gets a bad reputation that it doesn’t really deserve.

Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard

Arguably one of the most easily recognizable songs by Def Leppard, and without a doubt one I will shamelessly sing along to.

Basket Case – Green Day

Nothing like a little bit of the original Green Day, even if one may not quite consider it classic rock yet.

Black Dog – Led Zeppelin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtN8oBjMr_E

You can’t get much more classic than Led Zeppelin.

Don’t Go Away – Oasis

Although maybe not the oldest song on this list, it’s still one of the most touching.

Money – Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd are known for their use of sound effects in their music, and this is no exception.

Spread Your Wings – Queen

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cCJHfhpKmE

Look, if you don’t like the song, at least appreciate Freddie Mercury’s glasses.

Shiny Happy People – R.E.M.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCQ0vDAbF7s

I first heard this song in Marley and Me, and haven’t looked back since. Also, the music video just makes me happy. Is that ironic?

New semester resolutions

0
A new semester is another beginning for whatever you want it to be.
A new semester is another beginning for whatever you want it to be.

Let’s be honest, when you are in high school and January, the month for exam tsunamis, comes rolling around, you do not have time to think about “starting the new year right.” On the other hand, once the month comes to a close, we can become more intrinsic on what we want to improve in ourselves. This sensation is what I like to call, “new semester resolutions.” Maybe you figured out a better studying method last semester or simply want to improve on your productivity in school, whatever the cause, the second semester presents a unique opportunity for you to further yourself as a student, without the pressures that January presents.

So forget about that immense guilt you have been feeling for the past few weeks because the new semester is just around the corner. Here are some of my new semester resolutions:

1. Sleep– A regular amount of sleep is essential to one’s health. It is suggested to get around 7-8. I used to ignore this significant fact to push myself that extra two or three (or four) hours to cram for that test the next morning. But I have noticed that I have not been myself and feel even more stressed and pressured. If your teachers do not warn you enough, sleep is actually one of the key ingredients for acing that test. Your brain needs the time to filter through the day’s information. Get your Z’s!

2. Keep organized– An agenda is something that I always promise I will keep on top of. But over the years, I have learned that they do not work for me. What I need to work on is deterring procrastination and updating my electronic planner. Go with what works for you. Everyone is wired differently. Organizational tips that work for others, may not be the perfect fit for you. Get to know yourself and find that inner-Hermione, to see what will make you the best prepared.

3. Find a hobby– I have always been telling myself to be “well-rounded.” But my definition of a “well-rounded” person has discounted what truly interests me. Sure, I have my passions and extra-curricular activities, but I have yet to find what I just like to do for fun. Movie nights and hanging out with my friends is a great way to spend the weekend, but I want to find something that is special to just me, something that I can enjoy with my own thoughts. It is important to have that time for yourself. I guess you can say that this semester I want to find myself. This may be the ultimate cliché, but it does not negate the value of what it represents. You have to live with yourself everyday, so why not get a chance to know who that person exactly is.

A new semester is another time of opportunities with new classes, new teachers and new classmates. Cease these chances for whatever you want to make of them. This is the chance for you to improve, discover and begin again.

Is cereal a soup or salad?

0

Have you ever wondered what cereal actually is? You know, I’ve actually been asking myself that question for a while because if you think about it, a soup is a dish that is watery with some ingredients mixed in. Similarly, when talking about cereal, the cereal could be the ingredients while the milk could be the watery substance. At the same time, a salad is a dish that requires vegetables with some sort of dressing and in terms of cereal, the cereal could act as the vegetables while the dressing could be the milk. But thankfully, a recent video by Vsauce was able to help me clarify.  Hope you enjoy!

#JeSuisCharlie: Cartoonists in Tribute

0

On January 7th, 2015, the office of one of Paris’s more satirical weekly newspapers, Charlie Hebdo,  was intruded by two masked gunmen. They invaded the office and had killed 12 people. An additional 11 people were wounded in the process. The grim news has alarmed people from all around the world and in tribute to those who were killed and to the Paris based newspaper,  #JeSuisCharlie (I am Charlie) started trending. Cartoonists around the world, however, have take up a different approach to the attacks. The newspaper’s cover always featured some kind of a cartoon, so cartoonists around the world have drawn up pictures dedicated to Charlie.

Below are some pictures cartoonists have drawn for Charlie Hedbo:

Confessions of a Nerd: Undergraduate School Applications

0

It’s that time of the year when for Grade 12 students, it’s natural to not only welcome the changes the coming year will bring, but also dread them. With graduation just months away, my fellow Grade 12 compatriots have started applying to post secondary schools already, but many of us are still clueless about the processes.

Confused about the application process? Well, let me break it down for you! 🙂

1. Choose your course, and an appropriate school

course

Do you want to study science and stay close? Or is wanderlust tugging your heart? Regardless of who you are and what interests you, there is a school out there that meets your needs.

SchoolFinder is a great resource if you’re feeling a little lost. If you’re having trouble deciding on your major, this quiz may set you off on the right tangent.

Every school has an Admissions department who you can contact with questions about the school and their programs.

2. Apply

Well, that escalated fast, hey?

apply3

If you are in Alberta, you can use ApplyAlberta to apply to schools in Alberta. You have to create an account and a profile, in which you enter your school and course information. It makes applying so much easier! Your Alberta Student ID is given to you, and it is beneficial to memorize it.

If you want to apply to other schools, go to their website and follow the instructions given. The “Prospective Students” section is the best place to start, and will outline what the requirements are. To apply to some schools, you may need to fill out a personal profile, mentioning key aspects of your life that helped you become a better person, and things of that sort. This is seen in the application for University of British Columbia.

3. Pay the Fee

pay

This is a part of the application process, and in order for your application to be submitted, you need to pay an application. It is non-refundable, usually payable by credit card or PayPal. Think of it as an investment into your future!

4. Check your Email
check mail

Keep checking your application status on the website of the school and your email. Schools use email to keep in touch with you – to inform you about upcoming deadlines, requirements, news, etc. I recommend checking your application status once or twice a week. It’s also a good idea to check your mailbox for physical letters from the school.

Memories of 2014 with The Youth Volunteer Corps

0

What better way to improve this new year than to offer your hours to community service. My year with the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) has been an incredible journey. Here is a short video I created to share my experience with YVC:

If you have ever doubted volunteering and putting yourself out there, my greatest piece of advice is to just do it. I frequently get asked how people overcome this fear, but when you immerse yourself into action, there is likely more that you will gain than you will lose. Make 2015 the year that you make your impact.

Check out youthcentral.com for more information on YVC Calgary and how you can contribute.
