Interested in fashion, music, food, and networking? For the second year in a row, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra has teamed up with Holt Renfrew and various local businesses to bring you the chance to celebrate just that in their Fairytales & Legends Fashion Gala. Going off the CPO’s concert series of Fairytales for their 60th season,…
Can you smell it in the air…? The subtle waft of pumpkin and cinnamon spice is emerging once again and with it, so is fall. I hope I’m not the only one who has an unrealistically romanticized image of how fall is supposed to be. As someone who spends the entire year waiting for the…
As more fashion lovers flocked to New York City, the bi-annual New York Fashion Week ended with a bang. Ending on the 17th, various fashion designers from around the world will be presented their 2016 spring/summer collections for the first time. Out of those designers is a label commonly seen on celebrities and both Michelle and…
I first heard about local organization Little Hippies Kids Yoga while reading the “giving back” section in issue 2 of Dote Magazine and the idea behind it immediately caught my attention. Since its conception in 2013 by Jenna Galloway and Chloe Dusser, the local organization has become known for its charitable work in providing free yoga classes…
I’m done with focusing on the negatives of back to school season. Yes, we will soon have responsibilities to upkeep and grades to maintain, but truthfully, September is one of my favourite times of the year. Coming back to school can mean so much more than just homework and stress, seeing your friends again, getting…
Calgary has been home to a growing arts and culture scene over the past few years and many aspects of it can go unnoticed for the speed at which new ideas are popping up. With summer half over (how did that happen?), now is the perfect time to take advantage of the remaining month before school…
It’s a topic that’s been heavily featured in the media recently. In fact, you’ve probably already heard of it from Kylie Jenner’s controversial cornrows (read Emily’s article about that here) and the banning of headdresses at Montreal’s Osheaga music festival. Cultural appropriation is an issue that has come to light recently and it proves to be…
When I first heard about Mount Royal Conservatory’s Morningside Music Bridge (MMB) program from friend and participant Yan Li a few years back, I thought, “Wow, that sounds too good to be true.” That was back in my unseasoned days of both musicianship and citizenship so I decided to sit back and listen to her stories of…
If you’re an avid iPhone photographer, you know that photo editing is crucial in unleashing the full potential of what your camera has just captured. Online programs can be sketchy (all those pop-up ads?) and impractical, given your photo is on your phone. Plus, there are so many photo editing apps out there that…
If you understand the significance that the Greek debt crisis poses for the world economy, you are probably pondering about the next steps for the country after it and other EU leaders came to a consensus yesterday. If you were like me and didn’t know what a”Grexit” from the world’s largest joint economy would entail, you…
When two of my favourite foods come together, there’s no way I’m going to miss out. The Poutine King‘s new Red Curry Delight Poutine sounds as delicious as it tastes, and is a sure classic. The food truck, located convenietly by the North entrance of the Big Four Building, also sells many other types of…
It is once again the time of plaid, cowboy boots, and stetson hats. Every year, the Stampede attracts more than a million people from Calgary and beyond to enjoy rides, rodeo shows, and unique food. Unique is just one of the things I got when I tried the new Crazy Cone, a J-shaped corn-based tube…
TEDxYYC kicked off it’s 6th year at the Jack Singer Concert Hall this past Saturday to beautiful crowds and excited weather. Among the buzzing crowd were me and Ailin, marveling over the transformation of the concert hall into a modern and scholarly place. Guest speakers of the day included Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Ric Esther Beinstock,…
When I first heard about a newly proposed addition to Bill C-24, which received Royal Assent in June of last year, I wasn’t worried. In a country that is one of the world leaders in tackling human rights issues, how would this provision of the existing bill even stand a chance? Perhaps that was too…
Starting next week, the old Mount Royal Conservatory will be busy with traffic as they begin to move their facilities into the new Conservatory. For non-classical musicians, that may not be the most riveting news. However, with the induction of a facility to practice music in, the Conservatory has introduced new education programs for those…
