BALANCE. EMPOWER. ACTION. MOVEMENT. These are the principals of BEAM. Are you free this Sunday? Then you have no excuse not to attend BEAM Festival! For part I, see here. Beach House If there’s any band that makes me feel like I’m cruising on the West Coast, Beach House is it. The Baltimore-based band specializes in “Dream Pop”, a subgenre of alternative rock that has a distinct ethereal and light feel; just listen to any of their songs and you’ll…
We’ve all been there before; in fact, I’m there right now. With the summer approaching with no concrete plans for vacations, I’m on the scourge for meaningful ways to spend my time. While it’s easy enough to want to find opportunities to fulfill that, it is suddenly 10x more difficult when you think about just HOW…
I know I’m not the only one who has a hard time carpooling with other people because I can’t sing along to the top 40 hits on the radio. It’s true, I admit that I am stuck in my world of alternative music, though that’s not to say I don’t blast top 40 while I’m…
An app that allows kids to learn to draw, a safe social media site for kids, a battery that can be charged in 20 seconds, and a device that turns the CO2 emissions from cars into breathable oxygen. What do all of these innovations have in common? They were all developed by youth! Health sciences…
Whether it be a calming environment to do homework in when home won’t cut it, an inspirational space for your art, or just straight chillin’, having a go-to spot for all occasions is a valuable commodity. When it comes to cafes, not everything will cut it. Though we may complain about their high prices, atmosphere…
I have a bone to pick with the #Oscarssowhite movement that has taken social media by storm for the second year in a row. Imbalances in racial diversity shouldn’t only be noticed when all the nominees for an awards show are white. Though I’m appreciative of the media and Twitter users for finally getting the…
Ever since turning to vegetarianism in early December, I’ve been finding myself being much more conscientious about my health and that has involved me being more in check with my body, exercising regularly, drinking more water, taking my vitamins, and of course, managing what I eat. Though this change in lifestyle choice was long in…
This time of the year is always jam-packed with celebrations, and for many, New Year’s Eve festivities are one of the last celebrations to take place in this holiday season before we must grudgingly drag ourselves back to school and hunker down for exams. That being said, I’ve resolved to spend this New Year’s Eve…
Waffles, coffee, friends, and good conversation. Aren’t those some of the cardinal joys in life? I got all of these things and more when I met with fellow blogger and Media, Science, and Technology Editor Danielle this past Sunday at the relatively-new Buttermilk Fine Waffles. Being a student of Western, I have often heard tales…
Last Friday night, fellow editor Kandace and I had the amazing opportunity to attend the second fashion show hosted by Holt Renfrew in support of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in the beauty of the Devonian Gardens. This was my second year attending an event of the sort, as you may remember from the posts Ailin…
What do meeting cool people, making new friends, experiencing new moments, and helping others have in common? They are all things that are a result of volunteering! Volunteering is about so much more than just looking good on the resume — I can’t personally put into words how much being an active volunteer has…
Reading is one of my go-to ways to relax and spend leisure time, as you may have noticed from all my reading-oriented posts. After posting the first part of my ultimate book recommendations, which are essentially my favourite books of all time, it is only appropriate that I follow up with a part two! Check out…
Before I say anything else about this concert review, I just want to lay this out: wow. Though not a huge fan of choral music or operas, I was definitely won over (if at least for the time being!) after attending the packed Luminous Voices concert at the newly-opened Bella Concert Hall. Under the artistic…
With the start of school, leisure reading can quickly become a low-priority for many, myself included. I don’t know how many early mornings on the bus when I opted to zone out and look out the window instead of using the time to read. Recently though, I finally decided to pick up a book I’d…
