Ahhh… It’s almost that time of the year again. Summer vacations on glorious beaches, two whole months of little responsibility, sleeping in, spending all day in your pajamas. I could go on, but before I get you too rallied up on pre-summer excitement, we have to face the harsh reality that, once again, we are…
In an upbeat world that moves along hurriedly, reading has fallen back on the priority list of many. I know I can’t be the only one that puts off quality time reading in order to study or to surf the web. The combination of that and the accessibility and promotion of movies have caused people…
Cellists all across the city rejoiced on the 9th after a virtuositic performance of the quintessential Dvorak Cello Concerto by Johannes Moser with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. If you must know one thing about me, it should be that I absolutely love cello music and, let’s not try to bypass this, cello players. This experience was…
Do you know someone musically talented around you? If so, chances are they attended the Calgary’s Got Classical Talent concert in celebration of the winners of the Calgary Concerto Competition (C3) on the 12th of April. Four incredible young musicians, Yan Li; violin, Peter Wang; piano, Yunzhi Han; piano, and Nicholas Kwan; piano, were given…
Last Sunday I had the pleasure to meet May’s blogger of the month, Kandance Peroramas, to discuss topics ranging from writing to music. Though having only been writing at YAA for over a month now, Kandance has already established herself as someone who posts quality material about many different topics. What struck me from our…
It has been almost a week since I have returned from my homestay experience in Denmark. Readjusting back to normal daily life has been pretty strange and the responsibilities of daily life serves as a grand juxtaposition to traveling. On the last day of the homestay, last Friday, we visited the viking burial site museum…
The unique thing about our homestay experience is that it is also an exchange opportunity. I feel that the education system in a particular country is very telling in the sense that it shows you what the society values and what the social dynamic between individuals is like. On Wednesday we were given time to work…
Over the past few days I’ve gotten the chance to attend some classes here at Støvring Gymnasium and have definitely come to realize the major differences in the education systems of Canada and Denmark. It definitely does take very much explaination and comparison, something I will dedicate an entire blog post to once I am…
Since meeting and staying with my host family for the past three days, I have learned much more about the values of the Danish people – more than just being in the country ever could. In my few days in Copenhagen, I was able to notice a few primary differences between how our perspective countries…
As you have probably noticed in my past posts, I am not staying with a Danish family yet and am just spending time in Copenhagen. That defies the concept of a homestay, doesn’t it? Tomorrow our flight leaves to the city of Aalborg on a different island of Denmark, making today our last day in the…
After a very jet lagged first day, a full day of travel with a great night’s sleep was so wonderful. Our day began at 8:00am when we had a Danish breakfast at the hotel and proceeded to see the famous Little Mermaid statue, a homage to the famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen. Apparently, when…
As I mentioned in my last post, I am participating in a Danish Homestay program as a part of a program offered by Western Canada High School and Robert Thirsk to its students. Currently, we have just wrapped up Day 2 of the trip and the first day that we did not spend entirely on…
It can be hard spending spring break at home while photos of your friends in different countries pop up on your Facebook feed. Even though there’s only a days left of break, it’s not too late to do something exciting right in our city. Check out the weekend preview for some inspiration. However, if you’re still…
Being an IB student with a crazy cramped schedule, I know firsthand how hard it can be to keep a regimented exercise routine, especially when phys ed is not a course I am taking. However, after enjoying both mental and physical benefits from working out at my local Y last summer, exercise has become invaluable…
Once again, another weekend is fast approaching. It feels like no time at all has passed since the 5-day weekend and for those who were busy the majority of that time (and that would have to be me…), may this be the time to finally relax and indulge in these great events occurring in our…
