The Not-So-Useless Web: COVID-19 Tracker

The world is in quite the situation right now. While all of us want to mess around on the internet (as I have been doing for the past two months), the looming unease of the COVID-19 pandemic continually presses to our minds. The world seems so disorganized, nothing seems certain, and no one has any idea when things will become better. How will we stay informed about the pandemic during this uncertain time?

Every Case of COVID in Canada, on one Website

Thankfully for us, a dedicated team of journalists at CTV news has compiled a database of every COVID-19 case in Canada. This database tracks the number of new cases,  recoveries and deaths in every province, and updates every day at 4:30 PM. It also provides a general summary of each day’s changes if you are reading the page in a hurry.

One of the first things you will see when you visit the site is the total number of cases in Canada, and a map breaking down the cases by province:

From there, you can click on a province to see a breakdown of its cases in a beautiful interactive graph.

Hover over the line on the graph to see the specific number of new cases per day.

If you really like looking at data, you can modify the graph in many different ways. Here are just a few of the ways that you can view the data:

Results of all resolved cases
Current states of all cases, resolved and unresolved

If you scroll further down the page, you can read a more detailed breakdown of the situation in each province. This breakdown shows the specific number of active, recovered and deceased cases in each province, as well as the results of COVID-19 diagnostic tests. It also provides announcements by health officials and provincial government updates. Finally, you can track noteworthy developments in each province’s situation, such as days where cases peak or decrease significantly.

Some Good News…

Just to lift our spirits, here are a few bits of information from the website that offer us some hope. Please note that this information is accurate up to April 25, 2020.

  • The provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, and Yukon all have more recovered cases than active cases.
  • All cases in the Northwest Territories have made complete recoveries!
  • Nunavut has not reported a single case of COVID-19 throughout the entire epidemic in Canada.
  • The vast majority of resolved cases in Canada have recovered, and only a very small fraction of COVID-19 tests show as positive. (However, social distancing is still very important, because we need to protect those most at risk!)

Conclusion

As you can see, this website offers detailed, informative and up-to-date information on the COVID-19 situation in Canada. It is easily accessible, and clearly shows the trends in the epidemic in each province. If you are uncertain about where this situation is going (like the rest of us), be sure to take a look at this website! I have found it very helpful and illuminating during this dark time, and hope you will as well.

Click here to visit the COVID-19 tracker. Please stay at home, stay informed, and stay healthy. We will get through this together. 🙂
