YouTube Battle: Popular Songs Played by Unique “Instruments”

0

If I asked you, would you know most of the famous YouTube channels? If you could list out at least ten of them, then I’m sure you’ve seen or heard of KurtHugoSchneider or JakeBruene. If not, then here’s a treat for you! Here’s the collection of their ongoing challenge, just in case you can’t find them all. A challenge erupted between Kurt and Jake when Kurt played Baby by Justin Bieber on the recorder to prove that he could “play an actual song on a recorder.”

This is the first of many challenges between the men:

Korean food, Kimchi

0

Kimchi is Korea’s traditional food. Most people in Korea eat meals with Kimchi. But what is Kimchi exactly?

Kinchi is one of the unique Korean foods. The main ingredient in Kimch is Chinese cabbage, and it is also made with pepper, garlic, spring onion, salted fish, salt, etc. Kimchi is a very healthy food because it is rich in Vitamin A and Vitamin C. Also, Kimchi has that an unique spicy flavour so you can make lots of other dishes using Kimchi. The reason why Korea’s Kimchi is delicious, is that people ferment it before they eat it. These days more and more foreigners like to eat Kimchi.

‘The Kimchi Chronicles is a new PBS series that is planned to be aired with thirteen episodes on June.

If you have naver eaten Kimchi before, why don’t you just try it? 😀

Quick Fashion Tip

I know tons of people who do not have an iron resort to using their straightener to “de-wrinkle” their clothes. And although this may seem weird and outrageous of sorts, we should keep in mind that a straightener is also called a flat iron, and that some girls actually use a real iron to straighten the bottoms of their hair. So why not! Here is a video showing you an example as to how this is done:

This man is truly amazing. He goes out every day and feeds, bathes, shaves and cleans India’s poor. It’s staggering how down-to-Earth he is. If we could all try to be a little like him, imagine what could be accomplished. See for yourselves:

Crossroads

At a Crossroads in Life - Image Credit Dominic Alves

Being in Grade 12, I am constantly pondering my future. I’m at a crossroads in my life, with so much freedom but with so many consequent choices. I look to my family and friends for guidance, but ultimately it’s up to me. What do I know for sure? I want to do something I love. My career path should be a thing of joy, because I believe success comes from passion for your work. Too often I hear my peers saying they’re going into one thing or another “for the money.” I’m not saying that people in high-paying careers don’t love their jobs, I’m saying that you will never be successful at what you do unless you love it.  Do you have to love it so much that you wouldn’t even need to get paid for it? Maybe not. Does it have to be the single most gratifying thing in your life? No, ultimately it will be your relationships and experiences that make your life worthwhile. But a part of a happy life is work that makes you happy.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thruman

My friend’s mom works in Human Resources, and a large portion of her work is hiring and firing employees. She says that often the employees getting fired are those ill-suited to their profession, those that really should be in a different line of work. Sometimes getting fired is a reminder that you’re not following your passion. This “reminder” for many students happens in university when they flunk the courses they hate.

I struggle with it, I feel the need to go into a more reliable line of work, to choose a career path with a greater income average, but in the end, I’m choosing to do something I think I’ll look forward to when I wake up each morning. Maybe I will make a lot of money, maybe I won’t. But if I do, it will be because I love my work.

AMV Of The Day

0

I’ve decided to kick of my posts with an AMV (anime music video) of the day. The motivation for this comes from my own personal interest if not pseudo-addiction to certain Anime series’ and their AMVs.

This particular AMV is from Death Note.  It focuses on the endeavors of a murdered blinded by self righteousness (Light/KIRA) in killing and taking the place of the world’s best detective who is hunting him down (L/Ryuzaki). This AMV works well with the Anime, in my opinion, as the song used reflects the relationship that Ryuzaki and Light have when they’re working together to catch Light. Yes, Light does manage to get into Ryuzaki’s close circle of friends before his identity as the murderer is realized by Ryuzaki. The relationship is viewed upon from Ryuzaki’s perspective. Ryuzaki’s watching their relationship fall from grace is complimented well with the sense of “shiver” (the song used is Shiver by Elliot Minor) is carried out in his cringe as to what the relationship becomes… a shiver of what the relationship was in reality compared to what he thought. The connotation as well of notion of loss as well as shattered objects within the song amplifies the loss and shattering of relationships within the Anime greatly complimenting it. A fitting song indeed for Death Note, resulting in it being the AMV of the day today. Full credit goes to Obsessivemuch for creating the AMV, Elliot Minor for their song: Shiver, Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata for creating Death Note as well as Madhouse studio for developing the Anime.

University Spotlight: Acadia University

0
University Hall, Acadia University

In the next few weeks, I will be covering a selection of universities across Canada.  By doing this, I hope to help some of you readers that are undecided about university applications.

The first university to be featured is Acadia University. It is a mostly undergraduate-based university with 3,000 students and 211 full time instructors. It is located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, just a 90 minute drive north of Halifax. It is a school with a plethora of history, having been founded in 1838.

Acadia is a school with a history of achievement in academics. Maclean’s Magazine has ranked Acadia as the #1 school in the Primarily Undergraduate School Category in 2010. In the Globe and Mail Rankings, Acadia has also scored extremely high. The school offers 200 different degree combinations

One major draw for Acadia is its small class sizes (average class size is 26) and its knowledgeable and helpful teaching staff. A former student at Sir Winston Churchill, when visiting back, told us that the teaching staff at Acadia really care about students and their marks; allowing students to approach them during work hours, ask for help after classes and tutorials, and stress student-teacher interaction during classes.  Essentially, Acadia maintains the close teacher-student relationships that are enjoyed through high school rather than the large class sizes offered by many other universities throughout Canada.

Acadia is also famous for it’s strong student community. The school of 3,000 students boasts of over 100 clubs and societies. Acadia’s athletics are also quite famous throughout Canada, holding the most national athletic titles in Atlantic Canada.

Overall, Acadia University is a good solid choice for students who enjoy strong teacher-student-peer relationships. It offers many programs, activities and athletic opportunities on a beautiful campus in Atlantic Canada.

I would recommend you check out their website: https://acadia4u.acadiau.ca/acadia/index.jsp

Video of the Day: Overcoming Obstacles

This woman has no arms, but rather than complain about it, she learned to do everything with her feet. She’s truly inspiring. My New Years Resolution was to stop complaining, and it’s people like Barb that remind you why it’s so much more powerful to do something to overcome your limitations that it is to whine.

SaM’s Serving of NeRd: YODA

Do you know someone who is making a positive impact in the community? Nominate them for a ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Award (YODA)!

The ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards are non-academic and consist of 6 categories and 7 awards: Volunteerism, Advocacy, Environmentalism: Individual and Group, Peer Support, Perseverance and Leadership.

Advocate Award (Formerly the Activist Award): To be given to a youth who has committed time and energy lending their voice to a cause and bringing about change.  To win this award, the nominee has demonstrated passion and conviction.

Environmentalist Awards: To be given to a youth and a group of youth who are committed to improving the environment and reducing environmental degradation. The nominee(s) will have achieved results and made the world a little ‘greener’.

Leadership Award
To be given to a youth who has chosen to take a leadership role in bringing positive change to their school or community. The nominee will have demonstrated responsibility and drive, as well as initiative in starting new projects and programs.

Peer Support Award: To be given to a youth who is a true mentor. This youth will have positively affected the life, or lives of others. The nominee will have shown empathy and compassion while lending their support.

Perseverance Award: To be given to a youth who has prevailed over adversity or an obstacle in their life. The nominee will have overcome challenges and demonstrated inner strength and perseverance.

Volunteerism Award
To be given to a youth who is truly selfless and dedicated to helping others. Though not necessarily in a leadership role, the nominee has shown commitment to bettering their community by volunteering their time to a cause they are passionate about.

Let me back up… I first heard of the ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards and Youth Central when I was nominated for the Environmentalist Award in 2008, where I was a top three finalist. The winning nomination in my category was the ecology club at my current high school, which I have been extremely dedicated to for the past two years—funny coincidence! After the ceremony, Andrew Phung (the Program Director at Youth Central) invited me to be a member of the 2009 YODA steering committee, and I must say that it has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

The YODA steering committee consists of about 20 youth aged 14 to 18, who meet twice a month under the direction of Jennifer Hilliker (the YODA Program Coordinator at Youth Central). At our meetings, we discuss ways to make the awards ceremony as amazing as the youth we will be honouring. This year, we have two subcommittees: Promotions, who are in charge of advertisements and coming up with original ways of getting the word out (such as our YouTube video), and Ceremony, which is in charge of the MC, entertainment, and of course, the ceremony; each is lead by two of the four co-chairs. As a member of the Ceremony subcommittee, I have taken on the task of recruiting the MC, which will hopefully be the Lord Beaverbrook Improv Team. Closer to the date of the ceremony, we begin going through all of the nominations. I must say that this is one of the most difficult, stressful and exciting things that I have ever done. We sit down in groups and read over every single one of the nominations that gets sent in. With well over a hundred amazing applicants, narrowing them down to three for each of the seven awards is a crazy task. The things that these youth have created, overcome and achieved is so inspiring, and being able to meet them at the ceremony and congratulate them for what they have done is such a great feeling. Being part of YODA for the past three years has been such a great experience, and I am really going to miss it next year.

The award winners will be honoured at a gala ceremony on May 7, 2011 at the Calgary Zoo. Nominations are being accepted until March 4, 2011. For more information about the ConocoPhillips Youth of Distinction Awards, please call Youth Central at 403-266-5448 or visit www.youthcentral.com/yoda.
