Top Five Ways to Say Something Rude… Politely

0
Infographic by Anna Murynka

5. Make them feel guilty, but do it nicely!
Ex.: I hate it when you text other people when you talk to me. —–> You must have so many friends, always texting you like that… I usually don’t text people because I like talking face-to-face so much, but you know, I can read my book if you’re in the middle of something, hang on a second…

4. Make it seem like a good thing… Sort of.
Ex.:  You spit when you talk! —-> Oh that’s so cute, you spit a little bit when you talk. It’s so interesting to find people’s quirks. Like people who are lefties, or people with one green eye and one blue eye!

3.  Disguise it in a rant!
Ex.: You dress like a harlot. —->  You know, fashion has been a real interest of mine lately, I’ve really become concerned with dressing for your body and your image. Like, I feel bad for shapely girls who, instead of accentuating their curves, wear outfits that bring out their stomach! I realized I had to stop following trends that made me look like a square, and learned to embrace that I was skinny. And then I notice it in my friends, too, like Sammy wears too much black, it doesn’t work with her hair colour, and you show a bit more skin than you should, being a nice girl and all, and Deedee would look so nice if she started wearing high waisted skirts. I love those sections in magazines that help you dress to your type, and explain why and how and everything…

2. Diss yourself in the process!
Ex.: Your boyfriend is ugly. —–> I have such bad taste in men, it sucks! I just don’t find your boyfriend attractive at all, and it worries me!

1. Turn it into a compliment!
Ex.: You should go to the gym more. —> You have such a nice figure, you should start taking some fitness classes to maintain that bod as long as possible!

Countdown to the Federal Election

0

One of the few debates that I actually watched this election:

[youtube jGYE2d4LJ5M]

The Federal Election is within a week. It is actually on May 2! I am quite excited to vote in my first election. However, I must confess that I have not been following the election as tightly as I usually do. The looming doom of IB exams has filled my time for the last few weeks and as a result, I have only glanced at the perspective platforms.

For people are interested in following some pre-election hype, I would advise visiting a couple of websites. All of the major parties (Conservatives, Liberals, NDP, Bloc Quebecois and even the Green Party) have their own websites presenting their lavish platforms. I would recommend a comparative site as well. CBC news is not a bad place. Our own Youth Central has Youth Can Vote, which is written by Calgary’s Mayor’s Youth Council. I would actually recommend this easy-to-understand and simply organized source for most of you.

For those are over 18: please vote!!! It is your responsibility as a citizen. The polls are looking tighter each day as the NDP has somehow emerged ahead of the Liberal party in the past week and now threaten the Conservatives. Your vote may not be the deciding one but your ballot can still count.

For those who are under 18, you can participate through other means. There are usually positions (jobs or volunteering) you can take for the next week helping set up for the election. In fact, some of you can even volunteer for a particular campaign. If you want to become even more involved, I would recommend joining some youth forums and even election simulations!

HEROES T-Shirt Design Contest: 11 Days Left!

1

Youth Week Calgary 2011 is well underway, and there have been some fantastic stuff going on. I personally am pumped for the Wire Structure Jewelry Workshop I’m attending this Friday (There’s still room – you should come too!) but for the past few days, I’ve been participating in an event constantly: Impact Society’s HEROES T-Shirt Design Contest. Entries are welcome April 23 – May 8, so put on your creative cap and get designing!

Impact Society is dedicated to providing youth with opportunities to build confidence, character and integrity. They are looking for a t-shirt design that visually displays the HEROES program and what a HERO is. Impact Society defines a hero as someone who uses their gifts and abilities to make a positive change in themselves and others. What are your ideas? Can you make that idea into an awesome t-shirt design that you’d want to see youth wearing? Then get thinking!

So a little story about the design I’M submitting… 😉 I wanted to do a digital design, but all my ideas start out on paper. Right now I’m at the inking stage. Next is the colouring stage, then the scanning stage… So if you aren’t a full-fledged digital artist like me, I suggest you get it on paper and scan it! If the quality drops, you can lightly colour manage on a photo-editing program. Call 403-280-1856 ext 16 or email jaralyn@impactsociety.com if you have other ideas.

PS… the winning designer receives a $50 gift card to Southcentre Mall!

Motivational Song of the Week

[youtube EK6kJVzt5g0]

This week’s motivational song of the week is Demolition by Crow’s Claw. This song, in my opinion, is motivational because of the metal-esque guitar and just the atmosphere it creates in the listener. It makes you wanna get up in the morning and say “Hello world! I’m going to take you on today and WIN!”… Just listen, and you’ll know what I mean.

YAA: What’s it like being a yearbook photographer? I saw you get right up close during the Talent Show. Was that nerve-racking?
SA: It’s an absolute blast. It’s a great opportunity to attend school events, meet new people and practice my photography. Most of the time I love being able to get right up in the student and staff’s faces, but it can get a tad awkward, like at the talent show. The lighting in they used for the show was not ideal for my purposes as a photographer, so it was necessary to get as many shots as possible using different camera settings (flash, no flash, slow shutter speed, fast shutter speed, etc.) and to get really close to the performers to make sure I got good shots, but it was weird that everyone in there was watching me in addition to the person performing! I didn’t let that stop me though because I’ve learned that you can’t be shy if you want to get the shot. I have also found that working for the yearbook has encouraged me to attend many more school events than I otherwise wouldn’t have gone to, like this year I managed to make it to almost every football game!

YAA: You’re also on a lot of other clubs, how do you balance?
SA: It is for sure a challenge, but I am so grateful that I go to Bishop Carroll as opposed to a regular high school. For those who don’t know, Bishop Carroll is a high school that is entirely independant learning. We don’t have regular classes or any set schedules, which is great for people like me who love to do everything. I am able to do so much because I make my own schedule and decide what courses I work on when; I don’t necessarily have to spend my school time doing school work. I can go into rescource centers (library-like rooms with desks for students to work at and teachers there to help with any questions) and take candid photos for yearbook, help organize the pep ralley, or design costumes for out drama productions during school hours as long as I stay organized and do my homework in the evening or work my butt off in a month with less things to do in my other clubs. Sometimes I struggle keeping organized and managing my time, but my teacher advisor and other adults in the school are always there to help me out when I need it. I honestly couldn’t imagine being at another school, and if I was I wouldn’t be involved in nearly as much!

Pure exhilaration in Video Games LIVE

Some excited fans

Let’s begin with a poem…

Roses are #FF0000, violets are #0000FF, and all your base are belong to us. (In a concert hall full of fellow nerds, geeks, and gamers alike, I wasn’t at all embarrassed to find this phrase funny.)

What Video Games Live is all about

Two words: PURE EPICNESS. Myself being an enthusiastic gamer and my friend, a fish out of water concerning video games, the impression that Video Games Live (VGL) left us with was in absolute awe and enraptured amazement. VGL is a concert event that supports the awesome culture and art that video games are, and it features the very best music from the most popular games of our time. An excellent orchestra and choir, along with incredible and cutting edge video footage, solo performers and live action make for an unbelievable and enthralling experience! The show combines the power of a symphony orchestra and excitement of a rock concert for one unique concert.

Gamer or not, this one-of-a-kind concert will blow you away

Tommy Tallarico, amazing industry veteran and renowned video games composter, was the incredible electrical guitarist that gave the music played at VGL the electrifying and explosive  power most gamers are familiar with. On the widescreen, Tommy enthusiastically encouraged the audience to yell out with excitement anytime the incredible cinematic video and wonderful music evoked joyful recognition or impressive adventure. Old school video games dominated the concert. VGL included music from the earliest video games, Pong and Pac-Man, to fantastic favourites like Assassin’s Creed, Sonic, Megaman, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy, God of War, The Legend of Zelda and Halo. The breathtaking symphony orchestra, played live and in real time the animated chords of adventure and heroism, fantasy and larger-than-life action of the video games.

Cupcake Queen

0

Okay, so I realize my cooking skills are nothing to boast about.  A simple pasta is beyond my culinary comprehension. However, one thing I love to do is bake.  In my opinion, the world is divided into those who cook, those who bake, and those who do neither.  Since I would hate for you to fall into the last category, I am going to provide you with a simple and foolproof cupcake recipe (courtesy of the Calgary Herald) along with my favourite variations!

Ingredients:

-2 & 1/3 cups (580 ml) all-purpose flour

-3 tsp (15 ml) baking powder

– 1 tsp (5 ml) salt

-2/3 cup (162 ml) unsalted butter

-1 & 1/3 cup (333ml) granulated sugar

-1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract

-3 eggs

-1 & ¼ (313 ml) cups milk

Classic Cupcake How-To:

Preheat oven to 250 F (180C) and line muffin tins with paper cupcake cups.  Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.  In a separate bowl, cream butter, then add sugar, mixing thoroughly. Add vanilla and eggs, beating until light and fluffy.  Add dry ingredients to butter mixture alternately with milk (three dry, two liquid additions).  Combine gently after each addition.

Pour batter into muffin cups, filling them about 3/4 full.  Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until lightly golden on top and a wooden skewer inserted in the middle comes clean.  Remove from pan and cool completely.  Frost tops of cupcakes and decorate as desired.

Variation: For a lovely lemon flavour, add one tsp finely grated lemon peel (no pith) and ½ tsp lemon extract and if you desire, add a couple drops of yellow food colouring to the cupcake mix.

Butter Cream Frosting Ingredients:

-3 cups (750 ml) icing sugar

-1 cup (2 sticks/250 ml) unsalted butter at room temperature

-A pinch of salt

-1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla

-Drop of food colouring if you wish

Butter Cream Frosting How-to: In a small bowl, using an electric mixer on low speed and beat together sugar, butter and salt until creamy.  Increase speed to high and beat until light and fluffy.  Add vanilla, beating until frosting is smooth.  Spread icing on cooled cupcakes with a knife.  Makes about two cups, enough for at least 16 cupcakes.

And that’s all there is to it – enjoy and bon appetit!

How to stop getting runs in your tights

1

tightsTights/nylons can often gather runs (small tears or lines), especially those that are sheer, in a short amount of time. The best way to prevent this tragedy is putting them in the freezer before you decide to put them on. The reason being that the cold allows the fabric to contract less, and hold it in place while you tug on the nylons. As long as you can endure the cold feeling on your legs, then this is a great method!
