Alternate ending: The Most Dangerous Game

3

In Language Arts class a few years back, my class was assigned to invent our own version of the last fight between Rainsford and Zaroff in the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell (personally one of the most fascinating short stories I’ve ever read, next to Edgar Allan Poe’s works). Our task was to write a descriptive story about their last battle, a battle in the dark. I happened to dig my story out from the basement, where it was collecting cobwebs in the corner guarded by Zaroff’s vicious hounds; rescued and edited it, and thought to share it with you guys so no one gets devoured by those beasts when the urge to read my story comes about (because it is just oh so tempting). Enjoy!

Outside was a dark, eerie, moonless Caribbean night; the calm before a storm. Rainsford prowled around the frigid medieval bedroom, eyes fixed in utmost concentration on general Zaroff’s stealthy steps that echoed his. Suddenly, thunder struck malevolently! The abrupt gale slammed the bedroom windows shut; rain pounded harshly on the palatial chateau as if it could pierce through its impenetrable stone walls. Immediately, the only source of light flickered off, leaving the room in utter darkness.

“Well, general,” Rainsford mocked. “You tried to be civilized, I see.”

General Zaroff did not reply. Instead, Rainsford only detected the howling of fierce wind outside accompanied by the scraping of the general’s boots on the frigid, hard, and uneven surface. In the meantime, Rainsford frantically raced away from the direction of the sound. He felt along the cool, rough walls that enclosed the stale atmosphere blindly. Nearby, he caught a familiar wisp of musty cigarette fumes entwined with a scent of liquor. Alert, Rainsford spun around! He blocked the swishing weapon coming in his direction in time. The weapon clattered to the floor.

Zaroff chuckled. “You’ve done well, Rainsford. But only one can indulge himself in the soft, excellent bed.”

Rainsford scrambled for the walls in the opaque space. Although unaware of where he was going, Rainsford was desperate to put some distance between the general and himself. His heart thumped wildly. He breathed rapidly. I will not lose my nerve! thought Rainsford as he composed himself. The tangible bile of terror slowly crept into Rainsford’s parched throat as Rainsford realized that he had lost track of Zaroff’s position in the gloom! As if to ease Rainsford’s fear, a violent gust of frozen wind blew through the creaking window shutters, carrying Zaroff’s scent of cigarette and liquor with it.

With an approximate position of Zaroff, Rainsford frantically rummaged through his wet clothes for a snagged tree branch or a rock. Finally, Rainsford’s finger enclosed on a small, round pebble. He threw it in the direction of Zaroff. As the pebble clattered when it struck the stone floor, general Zaroff leaped. Rainsford surged in the direction of the sound of Zaroff’s boots with blind estimation. The mildly intoxicated Devil was finally tackled to the stone walls! While wrestling with Zaroff in the dark, Rainsford used his foot and felt inch by inch on the cold, rough floor for the fireplace poker that was the protruding trigger. Once his foot touched the freezing metallic rod, the velvet curtains of the smooth, wooden canopy bed weaved with various jagged fireplace tools came crashing down from above the bed.

Rainsford heard Zaroff’s yelp followed by a stagger. Then, a sudden gale ripped the window shutters from its hinges, blinding Rainsford with the moon’s radiance. A shadow embraced the moonlit sky as it soared through the gaping hole.

A scream pierced through the opaque darkness of the Caribbean night as the hounds were furnished with a repast.

He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.

NBA Lockout is coming to an END!

0

With more updates coming in by the day, we can see a very nice and fitting end to the NBA lockout! Teams can now hold informal training, practice sessions, and managers can now start working on the financial side of the game (contracts, deals, etc.).

Starting on Christmas, a new season consisting of 66 games will commence and fans can start gearing up to cheer for their favourite teams.

Now although the last few months have been a rollercoaster journey for anyone associated with the NBA, there may also be some advantages to the lockout as well. First of all, players get their well-needed rest on the off-season. Usually during the off-season players work on conditioning and personal development; however, with a longer off-season, many team doctors agree that players were able to incorporate rest into their training schedule. Also, with a shorter season, every game will count, and no team can afford to have nights off. That means we are going to see some good hard competitive basketball throughout the season!

With five games on Christmas day including the anticipated Miami Heat vs. Dallas Mavericks, many NBA fans may in the future call this holiday season where the NBA saved Christmas!

Michaelle Jean visits Calgary

0

How many of you are involved in arts and culture? And how many of you believe your involvement with the arts can change the world? Well, Michaelle Jean came to Calgary on Nov 17 to talk to youth who are involved in the arts. It was a great opportunity for Michaelle Jean to realize how arts and culture influences every individual. We met at the Mission Cliff Bungalow Arts Centre, which is conveniently beside Western Canada High School. This is an arts center open every Friday from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. to allow youth to share their talents in the arts. At the event, we had a diverse group of youth attend: homeless children who wrote poems in their spare time, volunteers for different organizations that help others in the arts and people who travel worldwide to share their talent. All these people had something different to offer and each individual proved to Michaelle Jean how involved Calgary is and how many opportunities we have for people who want to get involved. Michaelle Jean has created a website called fmjf.ca, which stands for Fondation Michaelle Jean Foundation.

This is a great example of how media can affect people’s views on life and their passion. If youth are given the confidence to join an activity in the arts, this website is a great way to get them involved. This is also a great website for people who are involved in the arts to communicate with people with the same talent/passion.

Jingle Bell Rock

1
CHRISTMAS IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.
I can hear the jingle bells ringing.

By Bobby Helms

What a bright time, it’s the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet
That’s the jingle bell,
That’s the jingle bell,
That’s the jingle bell rock.

Windstorm of the century in Calgary: Nov 27, 2011

I lived in Calgary all my life and never have I experienced a windstorm of this magnitude! There were tornado warnings announced near the outskirts of Calgary. This fact is quite disturbing because-

1) Calgary is (was) geographically situated to make it nearly impossible for us to experience tornadoes (even though we are in the prairies, we aren’t an expansive farmland)

2) The 150 km/h winds demolished 3rd Street and the Bow, smashing trees and windows. This frustratingly closed down the downtown core of Calgary!

What’s even more horrifying is for the passengers on airplanes! I found this amazing video of an airplane crabbing its way to land off the airplane strip and landed on safety. Causing airplane enthusiasts to  commend Calgary pilots for their brilliant landings and keeping their high altitude cool.

Hopefully you were indoors when this windaplooza happened!

A pretty interesting look at the American dollar, what it’s worth, what you can buy with it, and how it’s being used by our friends at xkcd.

Video of the day: Slow motion phantom flex camera

I was truly amazed when I watched this video illustrating the effects of the phantom flex camera that films everything in extreme slow motion (that’s 2, 564 frames per second for all you techies). The results are truly exceptional and very much “Inception”-like.

Three common math student mistakes!

0
Math is awesome 😀

We’ve all been there: you do a math test, you’re feeling really confident, and then you get the test back, and you’ve got one question wrong! After you look to see what happened, you say “Oh, I see what I did wrong!” Somewhere, you’ve made a (as my dad labels it) “careless mistake” in either your calculation or you’ve read the question incorrectly. For me, “careless mistakes” are the bane of my existence, it pains me to bring home a 19/20 for a simple error!

I’m sure many high school students experience the same turmoil. No worries, I’m here to help! I’ve generated a small list of common mistakes that my classmates and I make on math tests. Enjoy!

1. ORDER OF OPERATIONS

What’s -32 ?

If you think the answer is 9, unfortunately, you may need to review BEDMAS. (Or sometimes known as PEMDAS)

Brackets

Exponents

Division/Multiplication

Addition/Subtraction

The general convention is to perform the exponentiation before applying the minus one. Because in actuality, -32 can

Courtesy of: "http://browse.deviantart.com/digitalart/?q=Math#/d1qnp0w"

be written as  (-1)(3)2

Therefore, you complete the operation 32 first. Which of course is 9. Then obviously (-1)(9) is equal to -9.

So when you see this sort of thing in your long list of calculations, this is what you should be thinking:

-32

= (-1)(3)2

= (-1)(9)

= -9

2. DISTRIBUTION OF EXPONENTS

I cannot begin to describe how many times I’ve facepalmed when students say that (a+b)2 is equal to (a2+b2).

Math ftw!

Remember that exponents indicate how many times a term is multiplied by itself. Exponents do not distribute the same as multiplative and divisive operations. It is true that according to distribution laws: 2(a+b) = 2a+2b. However exponents do not work the same way.

For example, (a+b)2 is actually equal to (a+b)(a+b). This is because you are multiplying the term (a+b) with itself, once.

Therefore…

(a+b)2 = (a+b)(a+b) = a2+ 2ab + b2 ≠ (a2+b2)

3. CANCELLATION ERRORS WITH DIVISION

15x+5/3x+4

Sometimes when students see division like this in their calculations, they will be tempted to cancel. Many students think that they can cancel 15x in the numerator and the 3x in the denominator to get 5x in the numerator like so:

15x+5/3x+4 = 5x+5/4

Don’t do it! Remember you are dividing ALL of the terms in the top by ALL the terms in the bottom.

Well, if you had the willpower to read through this whole post, congrats! You are now a little bit more prepared for those dreaded math tests that we know too well. This only a few of the many common mistakes that students are prone to make on test. I encourage everyone to research high school math mistakes to you make you more aware of the simple little mistakes that plague our marks! WOOT MATH!

Photo of the Day: Home of the Gnomes

"I've always loved them and had the beard since I was in my 20's when I started my gnome collection back then." -Ron Broomfield

If you’re ever in search for a missing gnome that walked out of your garden at night, you can probably find the miniature man hanging out with the other 1,600 gnomes found at Ron Broomfield’s home. Broomfield, now 77 years old, not only has a passion for collecting gnomes, but dresses up like his collection to do his grocery shopping and to raise money for the NSPCC.

“Some people laugh and point at me when I go out in costume but I don’t care. I’m in my own little fantasy land and raise money for a great charity,” says Ron Broomfield.

Book Review: Night By Elie Weisel

0

For the past week, I have been reading a book about the holocaust called “Night” by Elie Weisel. Although many of you may already have read this short but influential book, I felt I should do a book review on it.

“Night” is a short and real-life story about a Jewish boy, Elie Weisel, who are one of the few Jewish people who survived the Holocaust. His main purpose for writing this gripping book is his attempt to prevent a devastating event like the Holocaust from ever happening again. The book desribes with terrifying detail the atmosphere of the concentration and death camps that existed in Nazi Germany and Nazi-occupied countries.

“Night” is a critically acclaimed novel due to its graphic description and also because it is written in the opinion of the author rather than a more documentary-type description. Something that I personally found to be influential is how the author frequently describes the perseverance of the Jewish spirit and religion. This can be shown in the novel and how even in times of great tragedy, he describes Jews still praying and hoping for the best, despite having the knowledge of the nightmarish “chimneys” where the Jewish people were cremated in masses. Although he does describe the fall of the Jewish spirit in some cases at the end of the novel, it does not cease to emphasize the tragedy of the Holocaust and how it has damaged the minds of even the ever-hopeful Jewish prisoners.

Something else that I find very interesting about the book is that instead of being very straightforward and depressing, Weisel adds several examples of irony. One of the most depressing examples of irony I found was when Elie is in the hospital and the prisoners are to be moved since the American and Russian front is moving closer. Elie is afraid that if he doesnt leave with the prisoners, they will execute all the patients instead of leaving them to be rescued. However, the patients are rescued while Elie escapes the hospital, as he is afraid of being executed. This turns out to be the most crushing piece of irony in the novel.

I strongly recommend this novel for anyone in Grade 10 or above, as it is not like many other novels about the holocaust that many youth often find tedious and boring. The moods, experiences and emotions of the author perform an excellent job of conveying the overall point across.

iPhone App: WordFoto

0

Hey iPhone owners! Tired of lame picture-editing applications from the App Store? WordFoto is something I found and thought to be pretty cool. The concept of the application really captured my interest – it turns pictures into word mosaics, which is really great for school projects, if I must say (not to go into a total nerd promotional talk or anything). However, I personally don’t own an iPhone, so I can’t really judge how well the app works and all that, so it’d be great to get some feedback if anyone is interested!

Good Omens: Book Review

0

I was getting quite tired of reading depressing novels so I decided to look for books that are funny or satirical. What I did not expect was a novel that’s so much more than that.

Basically, “Good Omens” is a comedic take on the Christian end times (most vividly described in the book of Revelations) where the demon Crowley and the angel Aziraphale work together to prevent the apocalypse, but can’t seem to locate the son of Satan due to a mix up at birth.

This novel is filled with humour (as expected). What I did not expect was an intricate plot line, or the deep analysis of politics, psychology, and sociology. I was thoroughly intrigued by the chapters revolving around Adam, where the readers saw the world descend into chaos from the eyes of an innocent child and watched him transform into the antichrist.

Bottom Line: the jokes were funny, the satire was excellent, and the level of deepness and complexity was unexpected and greatly appreciated. I give Good Omens a 10/10.
