DIY: Bite-sized Gingerbread Houses

0

I know that Christmas is technically over – but who says that gingerbread houses are reserved for Christmas? Besides, this snack (along with a steamy mug of hot chocolate) is the perfect treat for exam break. Take about 15-30 minutes out of your day for this festive treat.

This snack is so cute! Perfect craft snack for any point in the year.
This snack is so cute! Perfect craft snack for any point in the year.

Begin with your run-of-the-mill gingerbread recipe. You can use any recipe you’d like, but here is a generic one to get you started from Martha Stewart (Yes, yes I know. Trust me on this one).

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter (salted or unsalted – there isn’t too much of a difference in the result)
  • 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1 egg (large is recommended – but honestly, as long as you’re not using a quail egg you’ll be fine)

Anywho, despite the plethora of ingredients the steps are pretty straight forward and simple – it’s gingerbread therefore it has to have a few spices. In a medium bowl, whisk your dry ingredients (brown sugar is NOT dry!). With an electric mixer beat the butter and brown sugar until smooth. Beat the molasses into the butter-sugar mixture and thoroughly mix one egg in at a time, followed by the dry mixture.

Roll the dough into a ball, and place it onto a floured piece of saran-wrap (wrap it tightly so it is air tight). You’ll want to refrigerate this for at least 1-2 hours, though overnight is preferred.

You’ll want to preheat the oven to 350˚F. As the oven warms, use a rolling pin to roll your dough until it is approximately 1/2 a cm thick – or slightly less in all areas.

Yuck. Imperial measurements.
Yuck. Imperial measurements.

The above image is an example of the template you’ll want to create – it’s pretty straightforward. Heck, if you can find a way to print off this image so that it’s to scale  – the more to ‘ya! Anywho, this template is designed for the average mug, so if you plan on using a large mug, you may have to change the measurements accordingly. Once you have the template, cut it out, and use a pairing knife or fillet knife to cut out the shapes. I’ve heard of individuals who have used clean screwdrivers to get the details along the doorway of the house.

Once you have your pieces cut out, slip them onto parchment paper and into the oven (assuming it’s ready by now). Keep an eye on the cookies, but they should only take about 10 minutes.

In order to make a gingerbread house, you need icing! For all intensive purposes, I’m going to recommend just using confectioners sugar and water for the strongest bond (not necessarily the best taste), but if you were looking for something other than your run-of-the-mill royal icing, I recommend using an electric mixer to mix two egg whites (remove the yolks to keep the icing looking white), and 2 tsp of lemon juice. Once these two ingredients have been blended, you can begin to add the icing sugar. Just continue adding it until the ribbon of icing that falls from your mixer leaves a slight impression in the rest of the icing for a several seconds.

gingerbread-mug-house-recipe-final-1

At this point, I really can’t give you much more advice – you’re essentially constructing a gingerbread house, but smaller. Gather some candies to decorate your roof etc. and make sure you let the houses sit for a few minutes to let them harden. (And finally, if you’re at loss for what to do because you don’t own icing bags, try cutting a small corner off of a ziploc bag. It’s essentially the same thing as an icing bag).

Procrastination a Way to Alleviate Exam Stress?

0

Final exams are finally hitting high school students and I don’t even have to design YAA1my own science lab to know that the rate of procrastination with the added stress is definitely increasing as well.  Studying may seem like rocket science at times and I feel like “procrastination” is actually the perfect solution towards helping my overworked brain absorb all the information I have been cramming.  After I’ve had enough of puzzling over Mendelian genetics or perfecting my essay writing techniques, I’ll try my hand at some photography or explore iTunes’ latest apps – all while allowing my cranium to digest the aforementioned material.

So I bring to you a list within lists of some of the most random things I have discovered this week:

1. Music

A broad topic, I must admit, but here are the five best artists I have found this week complete with song recommendation for each.

  • Gabrielle Aplin (British You Tube singer, turned famous musician): Romeo Must Die
    YAA2
    The Paper Kites
  • Of Monsters and Men: Little Talks (the music video is a must see)
  • The Cinematic Orchestra (a shout-out to my friend from New Brunswick for this one): To Build a Home
  • Imagine Dragons: Radioactive
  • Florence + The Machine: Never Let Me Go
  • The Paper Kites: Featherstone

Honourable mention goes to this music video from The Paper Kites, which, judging by the You Tube comments, demonstrates “the perfect stress relieving dance for university finals”

2. Apps

Thanks to Alexis’ lovely blog on Augmented Reality, I decided to find some ARYAA3 apps on iTunes.  I highly recommend checking out AR Showcase by String YAA4as well as the very cute AR app for Cut the Rope lovers called Candy Flick.

Word has it that there’s also a sequel to the infamous Temple Run, which is definitely on my list to check out!

3. Photography

A couple months ago, I took a course on how to use my Nikon DSLR on manual mode.  I hadn’t practiced in a while so keeping the mantra of the “the magic triangle” in mind (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), I experimented with a late Christmas present I received.

*It’s a tea infuser in case you were wondering 🙂

That’s all for now….happy procrastinating!

DIY Bows Made Easy with A Fork!

2

Although it seems like New Years and Christmas are left behind by people already, but hey gift-wrapping and bows are not only for holidays (and Valentine’s Day is less than a month away)! In this tutorial, I will show you how to make these tiny cute multi-layer bows with a fork.

112100364

You will need:

-thin, soft ribbons (preferably 2 colors)

-a fork

-something you want to decorate with the bows =)

Step 1: Wrap one piece of ribbon around each tooth of fork like this.

(Ideally the ribbon should be narrower and softer than the one I am using, but this is all I have)

psb

Step 2: Keep wrapping around each tooth until it looks like this.

psb (1)

This step determines how many layers of bows you are going to have.

Step 3: Run another piece of ribbon through the middle and make a tight knot.

psb (4)

Step 4: Remove ribbons from the fork and ta-daa! Here’s your multi-layer bow.

psb (5)

Step 5: Trim as desired.

Ok I know red and blue are not the most perfectly matched colors but I want to use two different colors to demonstrate more clearly…so here is another one I made.

psb (3)

Step 6: Use it to make something look cute? haha=D

psb (2)

This is it!

Show some appreciation to people around you and good luck=)

So for a lot of us it’s exam break, which of course is just a time when we should really just be focusing on our studies (but in reality the only skills I’m improving on are my procrastination skills). Anyway, here’s a list of my favourite websites to spend time on while taking study breaks, or while pretending to study.

1. The title says all: http://iwastesomuchtime.com/

2. My friend Jessica introduced me to this one awhile ago. And hey!- there’s a plus: this website has educational comics that actually helped me quite a bit. So really, if your parents ask you if you’re studying- yes, yes you are. http://theoatmeal.com/

We Create Change

0

Free the Children has hosted a yearly event called We Day. This year it came to Calgary! I was able to join 18 000 youth in Calgary to attend this awesome event at the Saddledome this year. It was inspiring and so much fun.

Free the Children also hosts a number of campaigns, which they discussed at We Day: We are Love, We Stand Together, We Are Silent, Mini We Day…

And the fundraiser I am here to tell you about today! We Create Change.

It’s a wonderful idea. The campaign is basically a penny drive, but for a great cause.
We take pennies and collect them in bags:

images

Who doesn’t have at least a few pennies lying around their house unused? It’s a great opportunity to get rid of them, and allow those pennies to do something with their lives. And, don’t forget – even one penny is a step towards making a huge difference for someone in need.

Then we collect enough pennies to fill the bag, which usually amounts to approximately $25 dollars.

Now, you might say, “That’s not much!”. But here’s the cool part. $25 dollars can bring clean drinking water to one person for a lifetime. When you really think about the change that clean drinking water can make in a person’s life, it’s amazing. And totally worth those pennies.

The bags are brought to any RBC bank, and then RBC takes them in for Free the Children. And magic happens, and one person’s life is made better by a lot. It’s a win win situation. You clear out your piggy bank, and they get clean water.
Where can you get these bags? Ask your leadership teacher at school.

Happy penny collecting.

It’s time to create some change!

Pretty Little Liars is Back!

Our four main characters from left to right- Spencer Hastings, Aria Montogomery, Emily Fields, Hannah Marrin
Our four main characters from left to right-
Spencer Hastings, Aria Montogomery, Emily Fields, Hannah Marrin

Yes I know it has been airing for two weeks and I finally had the opportunity to catch up! To all PLL fans out there isn’t this show amazing?! And for all who have no clue on what the storyline is about here is a quick synopsis of what you are missing out on!

Pretty Little Liars is a teen romance/mystery show about four teenager girls mourning their devastating murder of their fifth best friend Alison DiLaurentis, who’s murder is till today not solved, and receiving mysterious and threatening texts from an unknown person called A. “A” knows everything about these girls from their clothing selection to their deepest darkest secrets. While all of this is going on the four girls, Hannah, Aria, Spencer and Emily still have valuable relationships to maintain and protect. But questions remain. Can you trust any of those relations? Is everyone just hiding under a pretty face, so their deceiving character wouldn’t be exposed? The mystery is still being solved every Tuesday night. Tune in to find out who A is…that is if the girls can ever catch “it”.

So far we have found out that Mona (Hannah’s old best friend) turned out to be A but we have figured out that A is not just one person it is a group of harmful, insane, clever killers. At the end of last season we have also been told that Toby Cavanaugh-Spencer Hastings boyfriend- is apart of the A team. A lot of PLL fans have been torn about this news because Toby was a dream man for Spencer and it was a huge shock to know that he had a hand in torturing his girlfriend and her best friends.

In the last two episodes that have just recently aired I have honestly been torn apart and stuffed back together because of the following:

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Jason Dilaurentis helping Mona…apart of the A team? The same person who locked up Aria in the box with DEAD Officer Garrett Reynolds? How could that even be possible…I was starting to like Jason.. 🙁

Remember that creepy innkeeper from the Lost Woods Resort the ladies visited last season…HE CAME BACK AS A CUSTODIAN STORING MONA’S/TOBY’S/A’S goods in the basement! That literally freaked me out! On top of it Mona lied saying he was there stalking her? Oh please Mona we know it is all an act. Remember when the girls skipped out on the marathon run and went into the basement to sneak into the custodians office and conveniently  Toby found them…WHY WOULDN’T THEY SUSPECT HIM? OMG why would he miss the marathon to stalk them…wouldn’t he say something earlier…oh wait he finished the marathon earlier..? PLEASE save the lies Toby!

The third topic I would like to bring up in this blog is Aria’s father Byron! OMG…MAJOR SUSPECT FOR ALISON’S MURDERER! His anger issues, sneaking into Aria’s bedroom to find Alison’s journal pages, that were conveniently in that creepy custodians office, plus stealing them, blaming what happened to Meredith on Aria and her friends… he is obviously hiding something but WHAT?! I can’t wait to find out but I am kind of scared!

I know this wasn’t stressed much but Ezra’s baby boy..(FYI if you don’t know who Ezra is he is Aria’s Boyfriend who had a child in his previous relationship he doesn’t know about) What do you all think of that? Should Aria tell him? Would it ruin their relationship or put it on pause for good? I’m stressed because they are my favourite couple! Urgg and now “A” is interfering and I’m kinda like PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE IM BEGGING YOU!!

I know a lot more happened and if you would like to discuss it leave a comment and we can perhaps have a discussion, but to be honest so far so good! I’m loving the show and hope all you PLL Fans are too! Can’t wait till next Tuesday <3

Nelly Furtado comes to Calgary

0

Thanks to Kids Up Front for donating two tickets for my friend and I to attend the Nelly Furtado concert at the Jubilee. It was truly a magnificent event as it showcased three major artists: Jessica Tyler from Degrassi, Dylan Murray and of course, Nelly Furtado. Jessica Tyler, the girl who plays Jenna Middleton in Degrassi showed her true talent when she impressed the audience with her ability to sing a variety of love songs. She also played a hit single “Shine” that she performed on the first season of Degrassi. The next artist was Dylan Murray, who is passionate about inspiring people with his music. He just came out with his album called “Inspiration” and I definitely encourage you to check it out!

Most importantly, the famous star of the night was Nelly Furtado who re-patched her singing career by coming to Calgary after almost ten years. She did an outstanding performance by performing her hit singles such as “I’m Like a Bird” and “Promiscuous Girl”. Nelly rocked the stage with her unique dance moves and charisma. The most touching aspect of the whole concert was when she sang her single, “Bucket List.” Prior to the concert, she encouraged the audience to submit an item that was on their bucket list. Just when she was about to sing this song, she read out three people’s items and one of them touched the audience’s soul. The 12-year-old girl told the world she just wanted to live in a world of peace. That was all. It’s simply remarkable how the children in our generation are wise beyond their years. Once Nelly performed all her hit singles, she ended the concert with taking a picture of her with the audience, something that most celebrities don’t do. I found it amazing how she recognized the audience and truly tries to incorporate them in her performance, a remarkable quality that she possesses.

That wasn’t the best part of the concert though. It gets better… Essentially the concert was hosted by Nelly Furtado to support Free the Children. All the money from the shirts, accessories and albums purchased would be donated to Free the Children to help build schools in third world countries and educate our future generation! Jessica Tyler and Dylan Murray were also found after the concert at the Me to We booth to help promote people to support this wonderful organization created by Mark and Craig Kielburger. This concert wasn’t just an ordinary concert; it was a concert that was showcased to help raise money for an organization that has changed the world. Even if you weren’t there, you can still make an impact. Check out their website.

Get Involved! Maybe you could become a Free the Children Ambassador just like the Degrassi cast and Nelly Furtado!

Christmas – Society’s Arch Nemesis

Christmas Commercialized
Uncle Sam? Santa? But Why…?

       Christmas has passed.

Many people, upon reading that, would have, undoubtedly, broken into thought. Some would have thought of the prayers they offered. Some would have thought of the money Christmas stole from their wallets. Some would have thought of the awkward taste their mother’s turkey left in their mouths. But unvanquished, the majority of the ‘modern’ people in society would have thought of something along the lines of ‘modern’ Christmas’ commercialized nature.

Many of us got presents for Christmas. I, in fact got a book. Yes, a book. On January 4 2013, I went, with my book, to school. Of course, when someone asked what I got for Christmas I would show the book. Some of them, in response, showed me their presents. Some of them had received books as well. But of course there’s always the rich kid that gets something better than you. So he pulled out his brand new iPhone 5. As everyone stared in awe at his brand new, ‘better-than-yours’, Christmas present, I realized that for him and for all of us, this Christmas present of his, had nothing to do with the spirit of Christmas.

Not only kids, feeling superiority over others because of unnecessary presents, but also adults are feeling pressures of our highly commercialized Christmas. Parents see it as an obligation to buy the priciest gifts for their children. Industry has also taken Christmas into its control. Economy plays a big part in today’s Christmas. Companies’ peak periods are during Christmas as people buy without thinking. People take holidays to spend with their families but really, after the turkey, you’re on you own.

Christmas has been diluted or is diluting, our society. Christmas is supposed to be a deeply religious event. Not a present show. Christmas, is historically, the day when Jesus was born. Today, Christmas is a day when our annual Christmas debts are born. Even through heritage we have understood that Christmas is a time of giving, but today all people seem to want to do is get. And if they give they mean to get something in return.

After Christmas, for the whole year, people seem to think of the last Christmas or the coming Christmas for unjustifiable reasons. I think that Christmas is not what it should be and is not one of society’s best times. I think that Christmas’ basic values of respect, giving and caring are not being fulfilled. I think that Christmas is society’s enemy. Society’s Arch – nemesis.

4 Books you NEED to Read Before you Die

0

All of these books on this list are here for a reason. They will change you. They aren’t cheesy inspirational books, they are just books written by regular people to entertain teens. But the way they are written and the message behind it all will change you and your opinions for life.  There is literally no way to describe the feeling you get after reading these books, and that feeling stays with you. Not just for a week after reading the book, but for life. I have nothing but praise to these authors and I admire all of them and I wish they knew how much they’ve all changed me and how they inspired me to start writing.

1. Saving June by Hannah Harrington: This book is one of my favourite books and by far my favourite on this list. Hannah has a way of writing that plays with all of your emotions and you don’t even know she’s doing it until you’ve finished the book. She has raw talent in creating a book that leaves you speechless . The plot is great too, simple and just the perfect mix of romance into it. Not to forget the amazing songs mentioned throughout.

2. Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher: I’m sure many of you have already read this book because of it’s popularity. But just read it again and truly read everything and reflect on it. The story strikes controversy like suicide topics always do, but the great writing and meaning behind it triumph all the controversy.

3. Looking for Alaska by John Green: I am going to start off by saying that John Green is hands down my favourite author. This story has so many great characters, they are all just wallflowers that make no sense whatsoever and somehow fit perfectly together in humour and seriousness. Again the story strikes controversy with all of the teen smoking usage, but it’s not relevant to the true story. Alaska Young is amazing, I can’t even describe how much she changes me, although she is fictional she carries such an oddness and knowledge that you can’t even begin to comprehend by the time the book ends. This book is truly something.

John Green

4. Greif Girl by Erin Vincent: This book is different than any of the other books. It is sort of an autobiography written by an amazing women. She was just 13 when she lost both of her parents in a car crash. The truth in her words and how raw it is just changes you. She lived through it and is happily married with child now. She overcame the worst thing that could happen to anyone and is proud to inspire kids everywhere. And I applaud her for it. She didn’t write this book for sympathy she wrote it to help young people.

Fair Warning: MOST OF THESE BOOKS ARE INAPPROPRIATE FOR READERS YOUNGER THAN 13! THE PLOTS MAY ALSO STRIKE CONTROVERSY AND LEAD TO OFFENDING YOU. PLEASE GET A PARENTS PERMISSION BEFORE READING THESE BOOKS IF YOU ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 13!

Security or Poverty? – Part I: Getting to Know About Seniors and Poverty

0

Old Woman's Hands

To many, the ideal life of retired seniors is to become snowbirds and enjoy living a joyful life on pensions and savings. Now free of job commitments and often relieved of mortgages and loans, many seniors pursue the dream life, having a large family who cherish their presence and embracing happiness collected over many years.

Retirement Planning

Doesn’t this stereotype seem extremely ironic compared to the title? The picture that many Senior Homes and advertisements paint on the living conditions of seniors in our city does not represent a large amount of the elderly population. Poverty is inclusive of all demographics—seniors are one of the most vulnerable groups. The number of seniors living in poverty, defined as below the low-income cut-off line in this data (Canada does not have an official standard measure of poverty),  jumped from 204,000 to 250, 000 domestically from 2007 to 2008, a 25% increase in such a short amount of time. It’s only just the beginning of the stories that represent many lonely seniors in our city and my series on poverty and seniors.

Calgary-MLS-Affordable-housing-crisis-looms-for-boomers

Even with the presence of programs such as free library cards and cheaper annual transit passes for low-income seniors, many seniors experience difficulty maintaining their well-being while at the same time managing their finances. Many do not know that there is a wide range of programs available. The Old Age Security pension money may not seem so important to seniors who are better-off, however, there have been cases of victims of poverty who are denied benefits due to miscommunication. What about those who had suffered through the symptoms of social isolation?

What if the respected elders in your family were suffering from this issue? Many elderly citizens you see walking outside in the cold are victims who could not afford better methods of transportation.  My view of a family is that the younger members carry on the responsibility of maintaining the health and happiness of elders as care is valued deeply. Many seniors don’t often have many relatives or large families or they can be distant.

This is what led to me to covering this issue when the opportunity came.

stockrington-real-estate

As I got over my emotional side, I began to brainstorm about the relationship between the lives of these seniors and poverty:

  • Is it the victim’s fault or is it sudden turns in life that cannot be controlled?
  • What led to poverty in the first place?
  • Are there personal factors that play a role? Are there difficulties in life that the victims of this issue are reluctant to mention?
  • What does our view of seniors, as youth on the other side of the age spectrum, have on our understanding of this issue?

The stories behind the lives of many impoverished seniors in our city are shocking. In my next article, I will be sharing many of the stories from interviews which were done by the Seniors’ Issue Constellation of the Calgary Poverty Reduction Initiative. In the meantime, though, take a moment to imagine the hardships many elderly people may carry as they attempt to move forward.

Tiny, mighty, and beautiful – the wallet redefined

0

Admit it – wallets are a pain to carry whether you’re just heading to the gym or attending a formal dinner. There just isn’t always the luxury of bags or pockets deep enough to stuff a Twinky-sized pouch. – Besides, do we really need a dozen different gift cards and a blizzard of receipts everywhere we go?

No, we don’t. And no more do we have to deal with all that tumor-forming, outfit-ruining baggage. I present to you, my friend: the XS wallet.

Handcrafted from pleather (no cows killed) and colourful, durable elastics, the XS wallet easily fits into the palm of your hand (and the pocket of your jeans!).
The pleather pouch safely stores coins, cash, USB’s, and even lip balms, while the multiple layers of elastics keep all the cards you’ll need within reach. (Seriously. It holds over twenty cards. I tried.)

While it may not replace your heavy-duty all-purpose clutch, some people I know actually use it more often than they do their old traditional wallets. And as if that’s not enough, 50% of the proceeds to to charity. We believe that businesses don’t have to be evil, and we want to give back to the community that supported us.

If you haven’t guessed by now, XS is actually a youth-owned, youth-ran company, supported by volunteer mentors of Junior Achievement Southern Alberta. 25% of the earnings go back to Junior Achievement to support more youth worldwide learn to become entrepreneurs (you could be one of them next October!)

We have also partnered with Free the Children, who get another 25% of our profits. We want to youth like us in other parts of the world to have the education and opportunities to achieve their goals, too.

If you’re in town on February 16th, the XS team will be at South Centre Mall for the annual Company Program Trade Show! Come visit us and  all the other youth-ran companies that have been taking over Calgary these past few months. (Find out what JA is really about… who knows, you might decide to become the president of one next year!)

In the meantime, get yourself an XS wallet here, or on our Facebook page!

CES: The Unseen Innovations

0

Razer Edge

Every year at CES technophiles are shown numerous new products, from nearly every technology company in the world (except Apple) and this year was no exception. This year, however, certain products took nearly all of the limelight, with Razer’s new tablet, the Edge, winning both the Best of Show and the People’s Voice awards. Other products, though harder to dig out, have great promise, with many potentially able to effect change on the entire technology sector.

Project ShileOne product which may change the gaming industry is Nvidia’s Project Shield. Project Shield is effectively a 5 inch tablet connected to an Xbox controller, but creates a combination which is much more than just those two parts. Able to run PC operating systems or Android, this device aims to target both PC gamers, portable gamers and primarily console gamers who are on the go. By using a PC operating system, one can play games downloaded to the Shield or stream from a nearby computer using a Wi-Fi connection, creating an OnLive-esque style of play. Though this could potentially create a problem, as you would not be able to play games on the go, this is something that could be easily fixed by a community made program – one of the benefits of using the Android OS. The Shield also comes with a great set of speakers, making it easily usable for listening to music as a group, again applying the Android operating system. One potential issue with the Shield is the battery life. Though Nvidia has not mentioned anything regarding the amount of time it could be used, the battery life may be quite short if using Wi-Fi to stream a game from a PC, with the high bandwidth needed to play quickly becoming a large drain on the battery. On the go, however, the battery life should not be too much of a problem, as one does not need internet, but then another problem arises – the need for a significant amount of storage space. With games totaling over ten gigabytes in storage, the need for a large drive in such a small space will be even more important than in smartphones. With all this together, a price significantly higher than a traditional portable device should be expected – but will it manage to succeed with such a high price, or will developers lower the quality to attract more sales?

Lumpy Keyboard

Another great invention that did not receive enough coverage at CES was Tactus’s tactile keyboard. This keyboard is made of gel, and is incorporated into tablets when they are being made. When a keyboard is called up on the tablet, a signal is sent to the gel, making the gel appear on the screen in the form of buttons. These buttons feel more similar to actual keyboard pieces, making it easier to type than on a touch screen keyboard, especially for those used to using traditional keyboards. The current model of this keyboard only allows for a portrait version of the keyboard to be displayed, though many users have discussed eventuality of a landscape keyboard being added and the possibility of having buttons appear in any location using signals sent by downloaded apps, allowing for games to apply this technology as well. The only problem with this technology, however, is the slow fade away of the buttons. After the keyboard is no longer in use, the buttons are reported to stay for at least a minute, with just the outlines still visible even then, potentially changing the feel from a smooth glass texture to a slightly rough texture. This product is still in development, however, and if the technology is improved upon, could see a great amount of change in where it is applied and how it is used.

This year, in CES, though an established hardware company still took the spotlight, there was a change in many of the other new products. In previous years, many of these products have been made by other hardware companies, with the companies simply using CES as a set release date for new products. Other products have also been sponsored by these large companies, with almost no new companies managing to enter the industry. This year, however, there was a paradigm shift in the new products. New companies managed to present new products, without much interference from established organizations, with software companies trying out new ideas, and entrepreneurs presenting new creations. This shift, though not fully complete, as many of these new ideas are dependent on large companies’ innovations, show the increasing amount of competition in the technology industry, something that will change the way we live our lives.

The Ones Who Paved Your Road

0

Living less than 15 minutes away from an elementary school, my daily afternoon jog usually takes me within earshot of conversations of children in the playground. I remember one particular little girl, red in the face, angrily ranting to her friends about her parents’ failure to purchase an iPhone for her as a Christmas present. It occurred to me then that this little girl is most likely someone who has everything she needs. Only someone who has never been through hardships could make such a fuss over something so trivial. My grandmother used to tell me that my generation ‘grew up in a honey pot’, everything was established for us by our parents; we live in carefree homes fueled by unconditional love.

spoiled girl

This is why I personally believe that we need to learn about the hardships our parents’ and grandparents’ generations went through to bring us where we are now. Communication between youth and seniors will teach us just how lucky we are. What we now take for granted used to be no more than a dream to those who worked so hard for their children’s lives to be easier. Even now, as we complain about the Wi-Fi speed and having to wake early every morning for school, some of these people still struggle to make a living. From the 83 year old woman who lives on $278.44 month, preferring to eat less than to ask for her children’s aid, to the 67 year old man who fights to balance both his cheque book and his sanity, these seniors have suffered way more than their fair share of pain. Social isolation, housing crisis, and immigration issues; the concern over these dilemmas is robbing them of the peace in their lives.

Can you imagine having to walk several hours in the freezing cold every day just to save up enough money to pay the rent? Can you imagine digging through trash cans for a living? Or not having a toonie for a cup of Tim Horton’s? Many of us encounter seniors in need on a daily basis, but never paid enough attention to realize the severity of this problem.  And even when we do, some of us would rather look away than get involved. But turning a blind eye to the problem does not make it go away; sometimes acknowledgement by itself is not enough. Maybe it’s time to put down that smartphone and help make a senior’s day.

Communication is key to building bridges between generations, I think that the first step towards helping our seniors in need is to hear their stories and empathize. ‘The senior’s issues constellation’ of the ‘Calgary Poverty reduction initiative’ collects stories of many seniors who have been through, or are currently dealing with hardships. And if you want to get involved, the seniors secret service offers many fun volunteering opportunities to help out those in need. There are a lot of ways to get involved and make a difference, sometimes even the smallest gestures, like helping a grandma with her grocery bags or assisting an elder across the road, can put a smile on their faces. And besides, what better feeling is there than knowing your good deed was gratefully acknowledged?

Musical Tuesdays – Toro y Moi

0

Hola to one and all. On this fine Tuesday, I’d like to share with you one of my favourite songs, Still Sound by Toro Y Moi.

[youtube 0Gqh4e1S6j0]

I always feel happy when I listen to this song. It gives off pleasing vibes and makes me want to dance and get into the groove.  The video is great because it amplifies the song as Toro is dancing with a massive grin on his face. He has this weird instant likeability about him which just makes me like the song even more. It’s a feeling that I can put a face to the music and when it’s a smiling one like his, I feel intrinsically happy. I’m usually listening to this song when I’m writing (like right now) and when I’m putting my fresh laundry into the closet (I also dance during this)  I think the song’s fantastic!

Chaz Bundick, what a charming man!

On the artist:

Chaz Bundick better known by his stage name Toro y Moi, is an American recording artist and producer. “Toro y Moi” name is a multilingual expression consisting of Spanish word toro, meaning ‘bull’, y (Spanish for ‘and’), and moi (‘me’ in French). He is of African and Filipino descent (Wikipedia)

Chaz Bundick’s methods are constantly changing and evolving. Heavily influenced by his parent’s vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk.  Like most prepubescent teens, he had his punk band and once that died out, the “side project” soon became the main focus.

Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House. http://www.carparkrecords.com/toroymoipresspage.html
