Is “Man of Steel” Worth Your Money?

0

canadian-money

I recently watched “Man of Steel” and I wanna tell you if it is worth your money. Henry Cavill stars in this movie.  It is probably his most well known movie as it has already made over 169 million dollars.    “Man of Steel” is a  fantasy, action, science fiction as well as an adventure film . It takes place on Earth as well as Superman’s home planet Krypton. The time is similar to the present day.

Man-of-Steel_01

“Man of Steel” is filled with amazing video effects that truly make the movie what it is. Sadly, there was a downside to the aesthetic effects. This was because the camera angle in a few fight scenes were not the greatest. A few scenes that displayed this, were when they displayed one of the cities in Krypton and a few space shuttles flying around the area. Overall the video concept was very good with a few minor negatives.

I am not a huge fan of Superman, yet I still enjoyed this movie. If you have seen “Iron man 3” or “The Avengers”  and you enjoyed them, this is a very similar movie except “Man of Steel” contained much more story line with many flashbacks sprinkled throughout the movie. I enjoyed the story mostly at the start because it showed what led up to Superman being sent to Earth.

A Flashback from "Man of Steel"
A Flashback from “Man of Steel”

I recommend “Man of Steel” to action movie lovers because it contains lots of fighting scenes. Be warned though, they may get a little stale by the end. Another reason why I recommend this movie is due to the fact that the special effects are top notch compared to most movies and the story-line kept me glued to my seat.

In my opinion, “Man of Steel” was worth my money .

If you do go out and watch this movie, tell me what you thought of it. Was it worth your money?

Quotes from My Two Favourite Spoken Word Poets

Everyday Sexism

0

We have all heard of the old story of construction workers whistling at young women walking down the street, harmless right? A little flirting doesn’t harm anyone. Wrong. When some men take it a little to far, it can really hurt a women, sexism is a very important subject to talk about. Now of course sexism doesn’t just effect women, but the type of sexism I am talking about effects them more. Some men still seem to think that women are nothing other than sexual objects for them to have rather than actual people, some believe there isn’t much more to a women than her breasts and her looks, and they most definitely don’t think that women really have a dignity either, it seems. But you shouldn’t hear it from me, instead you should watch the video below:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBeNfSoMqjY&feature=player_embedded

In short, I really do hope that some men can realize that women should not be taken advantage of and be seen as objects placed on this earth to pleasure them. I am sure that all women have experienced some case of sexism, as I have, and I hope you share this video with everyone you know to spread the word!

P.S. I f you want to donate money or just check out the website that supports this cause and a lot more of great feminist projects you can go here: http://www.chimeforchange.org/

Feel revitalized with Avatara Pizza’s mobile pizzeria

“Butter chicken” pizza…..

As I was volunteering at the World Partnership Walk, there it was, the food truck I had missed at Otafest! I knew that Avatara Pizza‘s food truck was coming as @WPWCalgary had told me about the food selection, but I didn’t expect the lineups that accompanied it; but then lineups and the rain can’t deny people of their cheesy pizza! It’s cheesy, but at the same time not cheesy! (Does this sound a bit familiar? I’m just using puns to be paradoxical, so bear with me.)

Chime in with your vision of the “Nenshi pizza” by tweeting with the hashtag #mayorbytheslice of course 🙂
AvataraMenu
If Avatara’s daily menu ever find it’s way on to a record book, this can be the photo of record for June 9th.

Yes, I know I lied; it’s not quite “butter chicken” pizza, but there’s that unique butter chicken sauce instead of your usual tomato goodness. Quite fitting with the roving nature of food trucks, their menu also changes day-by-day as well, usually with 3 specialties off of their pizza selection making appearances. (Good thing there’s that “cheat sheet” and @AvataraTweets if you don’t quite know which ones to expect!)

As for my pick that day, I chose a half Buddha pizza ($8), and did it look colourful like spring at Princes’ Island Park:

AvataraBuddha

Along with the red curry sauce, Buddha of course comes with tons of veggies; however, the cashews deserve honourable mention for giving the pizza a chewy edge. I was unsure whether to pick Guru or Buddha, but this proved to be beyond satisfactory. This thin crust pizza is a mouthful of deliciousness.

Maybe I’ll try a slice of Guru next time, but hey, that’s the charm; you always get to try out new varieties!  Having a dynamic menu around and lots of dietary options (gluten-free crust being a big one) is a major plus. If you’re just really tired of chasing them down for your favorite kind, their restaurant a bit south of the Foothills Hospital is your best bet.

Service – 5/5  – Thanks for letting me take lots of pictures and such!

Food – 5/5 – Did I say cashews and pizza was a good combo?

Value – 3.5 – 4/5 – The prices could be adjusted a bit more to make this even more appealing, but that’s just the two cents from a blogger who adores free food.

Food truck character and design – 4.5/5 – I like the vibrant colors that is used to freshen up the image of the truck.

Top 3 Most Promising Free to Play MMO’s (2013)

0

Looking for a massively multiplayer online game to play all day in the year of 2013? Look no further: I’ve narrowed the list to three very promising games which are scheduled to release soon.

1. Phantasy Star Online 2
This one just looks fantastic. It is a sci-fi, third person, dungeon crawling, fighting focused MMORPG with three different races, three different classes, great game design, excellent gameplay, fantastic graphics, wonderful customization and just an infinite amount of opportunities for adventure. The gameplay is the most important part for me since PSO2 has, arguably, the best gameplay out of all free to play MMOs.  It has a real time combat system where you can actively jump onto different levels of terrain, dodge attacks, roll around and combo enemies into oblivion.

"WE NEED A GAME NAME" "FANTASY STAR ONLINE" "NO THAT'S NOT HIPSTER ENOUGH" "PHANTASY STAR ONLINE?" "PERFECT"
PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2? MORE LIKE GOOD ENGLISH

It’s action packed and it looks extremely intuitive and fantastic. The graphics are just the icing on the cake – very realistic and varied among all maps. The soundtrack is also pretty damn good, and overall it just looks like a lot of fun. There’s simply too much to put in words but I guarantee you – this one will be amazing. I’ll show you both the trailer and the gameplay, both which look very nice. This one is scheduled later in the year of 2013, but no confirmed date.

2. Wildstar
This one is also another amazing sci-fi third person MMORPG. However, it is more cartoony, has less focus on the fighting system and puts more emphasis on the “adventure” unlike PSO2. Wildstar offers four paths, which are Settler, Adventurer, Warrior and Scientist just to fit all your needs.

Got a lust for exploring and platforming like me?  Set out to become an adventurer.
Just wanna kill things and try out new weapons?  Enlist in the force as a Warrior.
Interested in the very well constructed lore and history of Wildstar?  Think about being a Scientist.
What if you just wanna settle down and be the one giving out free drinks to your friends?  The path of the settler is for you.

Wildstar is completely unique and is an adventure like never before, with custom missions for each path to make sure everyone has their own experience tailored to their liking. If an entirely new world with so much history, lore and places to explore isn’t enough for you – then check out the gameplay. Even though I had previously said that Wildstar focuses less on the fighting system than PSO2, it still packs a pretty kickass combat system. It’s real time, which means it will keep you on your feet while you explore their massive world of Nexus.

new wallpaper anyone?
SCREW DISNEYLAND WILDSTAR HERE I COME BABY

In my opinion, this is the free to play MMO you should be looking forward to the most. The game designers took the genre of MMORPG and basically addressed every single flaw I could think of, then loaded it up with straight shots of adventure. Look forward to this one for sure because while PSO2 is an amazing, skill based dungeon crawler, Wildstar has a fighting system that definitely does not pale in comparison, plus a boat load of stuff to back it up. I won’t show you the gameplay because that’s not what it’s about, in my opinion. I’ll show you the trailer because it simply just highlights the amazing amount of story, personality and potential that this game has. That’s how great it is: you don’t even NEED to see the actual game in order to get hyped up. (The actual game is cool too, by the way.) This one is scheduled for a late 2013 release, but no real confirmed date.

3. Loadout
Guess what – this one has also got guns. Lots of them. To sum it up, it’s Borderlands 2 but with a MMO spinoff. But that’s exactly what makes this game so great. It’s a cartoony skill based third person MMO shooter where the emphasis is on the customization of the guns and the KILLING. You get to build, name and fire your very own guns by customizing their parts to modify their looks, functions and everything in between.

my loadout would pretty much be all lasers lets face it
my loadout would pretty much be all lasers lets face it

But it doesn’t just have an amazing amount of customization. It’s also got great gameplay. From what I’ve seen, it’s a very fast paced game where you’re constantly rolling around to dodge rockets and bullets. You’re constantly on the run and the gameplay seems smooth and just a lot of fun, with gore, blood and guts everywhere. The best part: stealing other people’s guns to kill them again. Ready for a slaughterfest? No trailer, no story – just death. This one is scheduled to go into open beta for the summer.
(Death? Blood? IN MY YAA? It’s more likely than you think. It’s a teenage website, anyways)

Restaurant Review: Globefish Sushi and Izakaya

0

5595467964_50b11581da_oGuys, I’d like to introduce you to my favorite Japanese restaurant in Calgary. Globefish Sushi and Izakaya is located outside of Chinook Mall, right next to the Shopper’s Drug Mart entrance. If you think Japanese cuisine revolves only around sushi, then you should pay this restaurant a visit, it will change your perspective.

The first thing you’ll notice upon entering this restaurant is its quiet subtlety. The lighting is soft and very calming, and each table is sectioned off to give a sense of privacy. The service is great, the waiters are super friendly, and the food is delicious, not to mention low priced as well. This restaurant differs from other Japanese restaurants in that they’re actually not very well-known for their sushi, but rather for noodles and other oriental dishes.

IMG_20130609_150304IMG_20130609_150550

On my most recent visit to the restaurant, my friend and I ordered takoyaki  as our appetizer. Globefish always has the amazing takoyaki. The bits of sprinkled dried seaweed aids the balance of sauces to achieve a gentle flavor. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside; I would recommend this appetizer for anyone who plans on visiting this restaurant.

IMG_20130609_151652

For the main course, I ordered the beef yakisoba. I’ve tried this dish from many restaurant before but I honestly have to say that Globefish has the best yakisoba in Calgary. Although the noodle was a tad dry this time, it’s usually deliciously chewy and very well made. What makes this dish great is the crunchy bits of fried dough sprinkled on top of the noodles, it goes very well with the beef provided and is very filling as well.

globe fish gyozaWe also ordered gyoza along with the noodles. Although I really enjoyed them, the sauce provided didn’t suit my taste so much. However, overall, this dish was very tasty. The gyoza were crispy and the fillings were well seasoned. But if you feel this dish is a bit too greasy for your taste, I would suggest trying the dragon rolls. When in doubt, go with sushi!

I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone interested in Japanese cuisine. You can visit their website here and find a branch that’s convenient for your traveling.

Summer Reading List: Back to Classics!

0

It’s almost that time of the year, everyone is looking forward to, but sometimes can find themselves hopelessly lost and utterly bored. It’s paradoxical – yet no one can deny it: summer can be monotonous sometimes. What better time to enjoy some well-written literary works, then?

Contemporary teenage fiction can be compelling, though it is the worst to find yourself trapped with meaningless drama (during the summer – really?), glowing vampires, and simply intolerable romance. Yet, adult fiction is quite bland sometimes.  The solution? Classics. I find that it’s so easy to avoid notable titles because they just seem… well, intimidating. Even Mark Twain describes a classic as “a book which people praise and don’t read”. But once you start reading, classic literature is actually really marvellous.

Now, where to start?

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

manysherlocksWho doesn’t love a great detective story driven by the genius of the Victorian era? Sherlock Holmes employs the phenomena of deductive logical reasoning and his advanced knowledge of forensic sciences whilst embarking upon riveting adventures with Dr. John Watson. If you’re a fan of the recent BBC drama Sherlock, this is a great read for understanding the source of Sherlock’s charming persona.

“There is nothing like first-hand evidence.” – Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

cugat_10Take a strive down America’s glimmering Jazz Age and find yourself immersed in a world rich with culture, impregnated with hope and idealism in the characters of Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, and Daisy Buchanan. Coupled with a captivating writing style, it is a irresistible read of luxury, passion, and humanity.

“‘Whenever you feel like criticizing any one…just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.'” – Nicholas Carraway, quoting his father

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

1book2Spiral down into the enigmatic, deranged world beyond the rabbit hole and follow Alice through her journey of self-discovery in the sea of creatures within a world of nonsense. Although re-created many times as an enjoyable children’s story, the original is one of gloom and unpredictability, said to question the essence of logic.

“I can’t go back to yesterday because I was a different person then.” – Alice

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

around_the_world_A4 Though not a novel of characters with exceeding charisma, it is worth embarking upon a fast-paced journey with Phileas Fogg and his servant Jean Passepartout to experience the means of travel in the nineteenth century. Contrary to popular adaptations, the original story does not actually engage a hot air balloon as a method of travel; however, the effortless style of writing is one that should not be passed up.

“What had he really gained by all this trouble? What had he brought back from this long and weary journey?” – Jules Verne

William Shakespeare’s respectable plays

ShakespeareAlthough resented by many and notoriously known for baffling high school English students, Shakespeare’s plays are full of subtle allusions, implications, and enjoyable dramatic irony. Frankly, even a play heavily associated with grave subjects of battle, jealousy, and death – as seen in Othello – can be wonderfully humorous. His plays are entertaining on so many levels of intelligence that it isn’t much of a wonder why they are deemed one of the best literary works of all time.

“To be, or not to be: that is the question” – Hamlet, Hamlet

Oriental Phoenix: The perfect movie and dinner date Vietnamese restaurant

Located just off Macleod Trail on 58th Avenue, Oriental Phoenix is the perfect place to grab a great Vietnamese meal before a movie or trip to Chinook mall, a mere five to ten minute walk away. With attentive service, a pleasant atmosphere, and delicious vermicelli bowls, this is a great place to go for a sit down meal while avoiding hoards of people sure to be packed in the mall’s restaurants.

A family owned and operated business, the first Oriental Phoenix restaurant opened on 17th Avenue in 1987. To this day every sauce, marinade, and broth enjoyed in either of the restaurants is homemade by the Vietnamese family which owns them. As they are from southern Vietnam, many of the dishes include seafood, and the recipes they use have been handed down for generations.

The two locations have different menus, and the 58th Avenue location has less selection. However, the restaurant

Here's an example of a Pho dish, I myself prefer the vermicelli noodles
Here’s an example of a Pho dish, I myself prefer the vermicelli noodles

still offers an array of choices. Appetizers include dishes such as the Tom Lui ($3.95), shrimp skewer marinated in sate and chili oil sauce. Described on their website as “a jewel when you discover it” the Bun Bi Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($11.50) comes with shredded pork, marinated pork, and spring rolls. Bun is dish made with thin rice vermicelli noodles, and all selections are served with a generous portion. Hu Tieu, Mi, and Pho are all types of noodle soups. Hoanh Thanh Mi ($8.95) is a won ton egg noodle soup served in a simmering broth. Com are dishes served with rice, such as Com Ga Nuong ($12.50), grilled lemon grass chicken marinated with spices and garlic butter served over steamed rice. Do Chay, vegetable dishes, would be the perfect choice for the vegetarian diner, but unfortunately many of the dishes are made with chicken based broth, or come with a fish sauce. A vegetarian choice is the Goi Cuon Chay ($5.75) vegetarian rice wrappers served with a hoi sin dipping sauce. Stir fried noodles, Hu Tieu Mi Xao, have selections such as the Mi Xao Don Ga ($13.50) a chicken and vegetable stir fry served on crispy egg noodles. For those who like to share, the restaurant offers a range of Do Bien, seafood, dishes including Ca Chien Don ($15.95) lightly battered fish, type varying on the season, stir fried with spices and onions. The restaurant also offers soups to be shared, such as the Canh Chua Ga ($13.50-$17.95) a sweet and sour chicken soup with “a taste unlike any other.” Beef, chicken, and pork dishes are also available, and include choices such as the Bo Xao Sate ($14.95) a spicy stir fried satay beef dish, Ga Xao Thap Cam ($15.95) stir fried chicken with vegetables, and Heo Xao Thap Cam ($12.95) stir fried pork and vegetables in a black bean sauce.

One reviewer on Urbanspoon dubbed the Oriental Phoenix “the only place to go for Vietnamese,” yet many reviewers seem to be divided in opinion, either loving it or hating it. Still, the majority were positive reviews.

The atmosphere of the restaurant is surprisingly stylish for a Vietnamese restaurant, which is also quite spacious. Trendy decorations and modern dishes and plates add charm to the restaurant, while the many windows brighten up the restaurant and add ambiance.

The Oriental Phoenix is an delicious Vietnamese experience, served in an aesthetically pleasing and relaxing setting. The convenient location makes it a great place to stop at when near Macleod Trail, while the service could be friendlier. The prices are a little high for Vietnamese, but the taste is worth it.

Did you know there is a great consumer show in Canada? – Marketplacesafe_image.php

It’s Summer! Do you have any plans to go some where around the globe? Or stay a night or two in another city? I was doing a school research and accidentally found this great show called – The Dirt on hotels, and thought you really have to know this! If you are staying in a hotel, you really might want to pay attention to some of the “stuff”. Knowing the secrets behind how “clean” hotels actually are (They are not as clean as you think!) — If you watched the marketplace video, you will know how “clean” the chain hotels actually are. If the hotel is not clean, it could make you sick or even spoil your holiday. Watch the video and you will be shocked! The link to the show are right below the first picture.

hotel_neon_sign_263-F11-AWhat you should know in a hotel :

-Check the room when you arrive for dirt, mold or insects. If you find any, ask to change rooms.

-Remove the bedspread and don’t use it. Usually, it isn’t clean

-Give your light switches, door handles and TV remotes a little wipe before touching them! – Alcohol based cleaning products works best! (like alcohol wipes or gel)

-Place toiletries on a hand towel rather than directly on the bathroom counter

-Rinse drinking glasses thoroughly with hot water before using it. Paper cup is recommended. Don’t use the coffeemaker if it’s in the bathroom

-Put your suitcase on a luggage rack instead of the bed or carpet so bugs don’t hitch a ride back home

Thanks to Marketplace for such great consumer show !

An Interview With A Philanthropist: Naheed Gilani

4

Last Sunday I had the amazing opportunity to meet the compassionate, caring and intelligent Naheed Gilani at The World Partnership Walk’s: Global Village.

Who is Naheed Gilani?
Naheed Gilani is a one in a million type of human being that offers his time and knowledge in developing countries to better their economies and quality of life. In fact he has actually attended an AKDN (Aga Khan Development Network)  project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Mozambique. AKDN is the organization that is in charge of The World Partnership Walk and many other global poverty initiatives.

I had was very fortunate to interview Naheed regarding his experiences working in Africa and was truly inspired by his experiences he shared with me.

As I mentioned before his AKDN project was located in Africa in 2010, I believe. He was there to better the economy and worked with micro-finance in both Tanzania and Mozambique.

One of the very first questions I asked was, “Overall was there anything in particular that stood out to you?”
He answered by talking about something that grabbed his attention in Mozambique. He talked about how although Mozambique is known for having tropical land and an abundant amount of fruit they didn’t produce much of it, and fruit was sold for extremely high prices. From what I understood, oranges were extremely expensive compared to bananas and he explained to me the irony in that. He talked about how the country should be selling the fruits to help their economy, after all they live in a tropical desert!
He gave me a specific example, he saw a coconut tree with multiple coconuts in them yet they were just still on the tree, no one bothered bringing them down to make money. It was just left upon the tree, which startled him because he saw a huge source of income being made from selling those fruits which could in the end help better Mozambique’s society.

I also asked him if there were any struggles for him while he lived in both Tanzania and Mozambique. He replied by saying the language and communicating was a little issue that may have occurred from time to time. He talked about how most of Mozambique spoke Portuguese and very little English but that barrier was quickly broken because I’m sure as intelligent as Naheed is he must have found another communication tool or had learnt the language quite swiftly. He stated that Dar Es Salaam was easier in that aspect because more people spoke English there. (Dar Es Salaam is absolutely beautiful, one of my favorite places that I have traveled too!)

Naheed’s last statement definitely inspired me the most! He said, “This is something I’m meant to be doing.” Yes, I agree with you Naheed this is truly something you are meant to do, you are destined to be where you are today and the work you do truly inspires us youth! Thank you for taking your time to talk with me, meant a lot!

Here are a couple of pictures from the Global Village, at The World Partnership Walk, that explain more about the AKDN’s work and projects.Blog 1 blog 2 blog 3 Blog 4 Blog 5 Blog 6

Kiwanis Youth Diversity Cup

1

diversity cupSo this past weekend, I had a chance to go and check out the annual Kiwanis Youth Diversity Cup from June 8-9, 2013 at the Forest Lawn Athletic Park. The Kiwanis Youth Diversity Cup is a fun, free soccer tournament for youth run by Kiwanis in partnership with the Calgary Learning Village Collaborative (CLVC) and the Calgary Police Service (CPS). The event celebrates the wide range of cultures and backgrounds of Calgary’s youth through a celebration of soccer, as well as various cultural events.

In addition to the soccer tournament, there were many local musicians, vendors and minor activities to complement throughout the weekend. Later, there was also a friendly soccer match between the Calgary Police Service and the local community. While there was lots of rain, I thought it was a fun event and more importantly, it brought out the multiculturalism and diversity the youth here in Calgary have!

0

Being a teenager is no easy task with grades, social lives, and a daunting thing called “the future” to take into consideration all at once.

Thankfully, this summer, the City of Calgary’s Youth Employment Centre is running a program called the Jump $tart program for teenagers 15 and 16 years old. This free program is a great opportunity for teenagers to gain employment experience- whether it be solely for the sake of enriching your own knowledge or wanting to gain work skills, this program is an excellent opportunity for everyone.

The Jump $tart program provides a great chance for youth to become involved in a number of workshops, experience guest speakers, and engage in workplace tours. From learning how to write resumes to helping youth develop essential skills for finding and managing careers, this program also offers a ton of beneficial resources. Not only will this be an extremely helpful program, you will also get to meet a lot of new people and make a lot of new friends.

This year, the Jump $tart program will be running from July 8-26, 2013. As an optional work exploration addition, the program will extend until August 2, 2013.

If you, like me, are eager to learn more about employment or careers in general, you won’t regret taking part in this program for the experience and just to simply have fun!
