THE Stampede 2013 Food Binge: Chocolate Covered Bacon

0

ChocoBaconEdited

Name of Food – Chocolate-covered bacon, of course! 🙂

Where to Buy – This tent near the Stampede Corral and the Beer Gardens on the way to the Saddledome:

ChocoBaconLocation

ChocoBaconLocation3

Look! They are also the one who sells deep-fried oreos, jalapeno peppers, and cheesecake. :)
Look at what they sell!

Cost – $6

What makes it worthwhile – Perhaps it’s the occasional blend of chocolaty sweetness and the smoked bacon flavor. Yet other than that, there is just really nothing else to say that would be really be a compliment. The pricing was for sure much higher than what it’s worth – $6 for two strips didn’t sound too pleasing to me, nor did it sound justifiable to Carrie who I was with for the reviews. Other than the combo, it was very fatty and the chocolate completely overpowered the bacon. This pick isn’t the most bang-for-the-buck nor does it really represent a well-executed midway treat.

THE Stampede 2013 Food Binge: Dessert Fries

dessertfries

Name of Food – Dessert fries! Ohnomnom!

Where to Buy – The place that offeres these fries are right near the entrance of the Grandstand:

Cost – $6 🙂

What makes it worthwhile – The fries themselves are relatively delicious, and as your usual stampede snack it will do well. On the other hand, however, these fries seem to be lacking in the “dessert” department. The frosting is, of course, very sweet and helps to give the fries a twist, but without it, the peppered cinnamon powder isn’t quite a star. Even then, the lack of perhaps a “specialty” doesn’t detract from the good ol’ fries; they were pretty much as good as you can really get. I would suggest you to try their other toppings instead of this one though because while you won’t be leaving the grounds with a huge sugar crash, you won’t be overly-impressed either.

Summer To-Do List

0

If you aren’t going away for the summer and the Stampede really isn’t your kind of thing, I have made a list of some things you can do to make your summer a little less boring.

Get together with old friends: Summer is a great time to call up some of your old grade school friends that you haven’t seen in awhile. There’s tons of things you can do that won’t really require that much deep conversation so you can avoid awkward small talk that happens when you haven’t seen someone in awhile. Maybe try mini golf or a waterpark.

Sun Tattoos: It’s pretty simple and will help you get a tan, but it is does take awhile to do. You can either tape a design on your skin that you want or put sunscreen on in the design you want but don’t put it on any other part of your body, (make sure it isn’t too hot outside or you could burn with this option). Now just sit in a sunny spot outside with a good book, listen to music or take a nap. It should take a few hours for you to be tanned enough to notice the colour difference between your skin and the sun tattoo. If you don’t want it anymore after awhile just go back outside and put lotion on everywhere except for the tattoo and wait for it to tan!

summer 2013

Water Fight: It’s fun to do with friends when it’s hot out! Just make sure if you are using balloons  to fill them up the day before, otherwise if you are trying to fill up enough for a long lasting fight while everyone is waiting, they might start to use some of them (I’ve learned that the hard way)! Another fun water game is to fill up large jugs or glasses and get everyone in partners. Each partner asks a question about themselves to the other person (birthday, favourite colour etc..) If they get it wrong, the person that asked the question dumps the water on the responder. Let all the groups take turns so you can watch other people’s game.

Experiment Making Frozen Treats: Kool Aid popsicles, chocolate ice cream with bacon, you name it!

Garage Sales: Host one or go around looking at them. It’s great thrift shopping and you can buy something old and make it new again with your own twist!

Concerts: Search around online for a band you like, you never know, they might be having a summer concert in your city! Even go to some of the music festivals, you may find a new favourite band!

Happy Summer!

5 Smoothies for the Summer

0

What better way to get into the summer spirit than with a glass of ice cold, fruity smoothie? These recipes I’m about to introduce you to are not only absolutely delicious, but healthy as well. Due to the amount of fruits contained in smoothies, they usually have a fairly impressive level of vitamins and other nutrients to benefit your body. So, without further ado, here’s a list of 5 smoothies for this summer.

1) The Melon, Mint, and cucumber smoothie. This cool and refreshing blend is an instant relief from the blazing sun. The vitamin C contained in the cucumber promotes smooth, flawless skin while the honey dew melon serves as a great source of vitamin B6 and potassium.

7cd83248832f85b30c1e3ceb3ef71873

To make this smoothie, you’ll need:

  • 2 cups chopped honeydew
  • 1 cup chopped English cucumber
  • 12 fresh mint leaves
  • 2-4 tablespoons fresh lime juice, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon honey

Puree the ingredients together until a smooth blend is formed. (original recipe and image can be found here.)

2) The Breakfast Express Smoothie. This smoothie is rich in antioxidant, gluten free, and can substitute the nutritional values of a whole breakfast.

getimage.aspx

To make this smoothie, you’ll need:

  • 2 cans (15 oz. each) Del Monte Lite® Yellow Cling Sliced Peaches
  • 1-1/2 cups Del Monte® Pineapple Juice
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup low-fat plain yogurt
  • 10 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in blender container, use two batches if necessary. Then cover and blend until smooth. (original recipe and image can be found here.)

3) The Fig and Banana Smoothie. This exotic and posh smoothie is a perfect before-bed treat. Figs contain high levels of calcium and fiber while bananas are a great source of potassium. The owner of this recipe recommends yogurt or kefir as a substitute for coconut milk if needed.

fig-banana-smoothie2

To make this smoothie, you’ll need:

  • 3 fresh figs (or 3 dried figs, soaked overnight in water to rehydrate)
  • 1 banana, previously peeled and frozen
  • 1/2 cup organic coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon rose water (optional)
  • dash of ground cardamom (optional)

Blend all ingredients and add ice or water until desired consistency is reached. (original recipe and image can be found here.)

4) The Berry Coconut Smoothie. you can never go wrong with berries, for taste and nutritional values. Blue berries are a very good source of antioxidants, raspberries promote weight loss, strawberries carry high levels of vitamin C and manganese,  and blackberries provide the body with dietary fibers. Added together, this smoothie is a nutrition party.

Berry-Coconut-Smoothie2

To make this smoothie, you’ll need:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup frozen mixed berries
  • 1 teaspoon flax seed meal
  • 1 Tablespoon agave
  • ⅓ cup coconut milk
  • 2-3 ice cubes

Place all ingredients in blender and mix until smooth. (original recipe and image can be found here.)

5) The Delicious Mango Smoothie. This zesty and tropical smoothie is perfect after a day in the sun. Mangoes are low in cholesterol and are a great source of vitamin A, C, and B6. They also contain a significant amount of dietary fiber. This smoothie is gluten free and easy to make.

Delicious-Mango-Smoothie-Allrecipes

To make this smoothie, you’ll need:

  • 1 1/2 cups diced ripe mango
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups Silk Pure Almond Original or Vanilla

You know the drill, just combine the ingredients and blend away. (original recipe and image can be found here.)

THE Stampede 2013 Food Binge: Double Smoked Bacon Wrapped Cheese Perogie Skewer

Where to Buy – The Grill Cafe inside the Agriculture Building, which is right beside the Saddledome and these statues:

What makes it worthwhile – Can I say that it was the bacon? Even though this was my second helping after the relatively disappointing chocolate-covered bacon, this snack did much better at having it just at the right place with the right flavor. What helps also is that it provides something different than the sugar overdose found in many of the other choices – the perogies had an awesome cheese filling for sure along with some sour cream. That coupled along with the fact that Carrie and I were both still hungry after having reviewed three items before this one helped to make it my favourite. Despite the location being tucked away from the other hotspots on the grounds and this not being the most extreme of ’em all (for you people who are seeking absurdity), it’s for sure worth it.

Finding Ones Passion, Working Hard and Dreaming Big – Why you can be who you want to be!

2

We all want to be the next Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Taylor Swift, JK Rowling or what not. The problem with most of the youth today is that we’re either very spoiled or have too much distractions in our life. Technology, social media, and other different mediums have clouded our minds as to what it takes to achieve success.

DreamBig

A lot of us think that it’s impossible to be the next Michael Jordan or the next Bill Gates. However, we must remember that all these successful individuals all started somewhere. They weren’t phenomenal performers or multi-billionaires from day 1. They started out just like you.

After reading several biographies of the most prominent individuals inthe world, I’ve found a couple of similarities in these men and decided to highlight some key traits and things that helped these individuals change the world.

Find Ones Passion

The most successful men in the history of the world all had one thing in common. They all had a PASSION.Passion

Passion is a word that is thrown around and mentioned so many times to us youth that sometimes it sounds so cliché already. The funny thing is we don’t truly understand what passion is and what it means to have a passion.

Passion is something greater than you can imagine. Passion is not just about interests or hobbies. Passion is about being dedicated to something and really going the extra mile. What allows one to be passionate is the sole fact that you love this something so much that you’re willing to do anything to achieve your goals.

You can be passionate about practically anything but it has to be something. Passion is where everything starts. From Justin Beiber to Steve Nash to Bill Gates, they all had something they were passionate about–––something they were willing to spend all their time on just so that they could be successful in that something.

“Do what you are passionate about, the rest will follow.” – Praveen Sherman

Work Hard and Smart

It wasn’t by accident that Steve Nash, a Canadian white boy who couldn’t “jump”, was able to make it to the NBA. Steve steve nashNash had a legendary work ethic like no other. He’d be the first one in practice and the last one out. He’d even dribble tennis balls on the way to school.

He did all this because he had one goal and that was to prove all his naysayers wrong and make it to the NBA. He obviously wasn’t the tallest player, the fastest or the most athletic. However, he was able to make the most out of who he was and to the surprise of many play his way to two NBA season MVP awards.

Steve Nash didn’t just work hard, he also worked smart. He watched game film, analyzed his weaknesses and further improved his strengths. Working hard and smart isn’t only applicable to the field of sports. it’s applicable to everything. It’s applicable to LIFE.

Dare to Dream

One of the greatest traits of the all the successful and revolutionary men in the course of history is that they dared to dream. They didn’t settle for mediocrity. Like the old adage says, “Shoot for the stars, so that even if you come up short, you’ll land in the skies.” In other words, DREAM BIG!

“If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” ~ Steve Jobs

It’s when we dream that we are able to transcend time and space and accomplish things that no one would have even thought of foreseeing. It’s our dreams that push us to strive for excellence, to go the extra mile. It’s the sight of our dreams that allows us to endure the pain and go through sleepless nights just so that we could be one step closer to our goal.

DisneyDon’t let society dictate what you can and can’t do. Like the ever so famous Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

All the successful men started with a passion for something and a dream. However, they didn’t just sit there thinking about this passion and their dreams, they did everything they could to make sure that they’d have the best chance to achieve their goals.

What we, the youth must remember though is that at the end of the day, whether you succeed or fail, what matters most is that you gave it your all. It is because sometimes even when you pour our blood, sweat and tears, you still fall short.

The beautiful thing about life is that more often than not, failure is just the beginning of greater things to come for without failure there is no success.

I challenge everyone out there to find their passion, work hard, dream big and one day, leave a mark and make the world a better place for all!)

Sled Island: Sunshine

Sunshine

I had the pleasure of meeting Vancouver’s Sunshine, a five-person indie, pop and shoegaze band. Their music has hazy guitars, soft and breathy vocals, and overall make you feel happy and uplifted!

Their self-titled LP was a joy to listen to, and despite the rain pouring during Sled Island, their music brought sunshine to my summer days. Sunshine collaborated with Sune Rose Wagner from the Raveonettes, John Collins from The New Pornographers, Woodie Taylor from Morrissey and Hayz Fisher from The New Values’.

Trevor Risk, the lead vocal/guitarist created Sunshine with bassist  Tyler James Quarles, guitarist Ian Urbanski, drummer Sean Tyson (from Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party) and singer/keyboard player Gillian Dambourg.

Unfortunately I was unable to capture a video of the interview (camera problems!) but I was able to get the audio–they are wonderfully fun and exciting people you should try to meet!

Despite the rain (and we made a few puns and jokes about that in the interview), Sunshine’s performance was fortunately not rained out. I was able to go to their second show at Local 510 (moved from Bamboo because of the flood) and it was just magical. You can catch some of their awesome live music in the following videos!

You can check out more pictures of their show at my flickr account. I know you’re reading this @SunshineSucks, so I want to thank you for the awesome experience and I hope to see you guys again in Calgary!

If you’ve got good taste, listen to them on CBC Music and Bandcamp.

Follow them on Facebook and Youtube.

Faster Internet, Can it be?

network cables connected to switchInternet 60 times faster than the average Canadians! OneGigabit is a start-up company in Vancouver, making it possible by laying fiber cable 20 centimeters under the road without having to remove or damage it.sm-250-surface-fiber-bricks-540wide This is extremely useful because as a start up company, it would be much harder to get started if they had to remove parts of the road in order to lay down the cable. The cost of getting fibre cable from Google fiber in the US is around the same as it would cost in Canada. OneGigabit is offering their service for approximately $45-65 dollar,s while Google’s price is $70 with the exact same rate.

Most major companies don’t even offer fiber cable and the ones that do charge a hefty price. Shaw, Bell, and Rogers offer a service for 115-226 a month but only give you about a quarter of the speed.usage+based+billing+internet+web This is because fiber cable and other cables superior to copper, are much more costly. Also, that would require them to replace the wire that already exists and some people don’t need better internet. OneGigabit plans to focus on apartments in downtown Vancouver that are about 15-20 kilometers away from their building.  They will target real estate in order to ensure that they are not serving a single client but rather, serving a community. I personally believe that fiber cable won’t be a common thing to see until either larger companies create better rates on fiber cable and start investing in fiber cable for entire cities or smaller companies begin to supply fiber cable in smaller quantities. If you would like to learn more I recommend taking a look at the following links:

YouthTube Channels? How it really works in Youtube.

0

Do you believe that youth should make their own Youtube channels?

Some people seem to think it’s a terrible idea. Kids making Youtube channels. What could go worse? Not only do they have squeaky voices, but they also edit horribly. And for that, many people criticize young people for making Youtube channels, sometimes going full hate on these small guys.

I can empathize as they can be quite annoying. I’ve watched millions of my own videos when I was a kid. But I believe that kids should chase their dreams while being informed about what they’re getting into, at least if they have a “goal” to become famous. If you fit the criteria, you’re a kid and you want to make a Youtube channel, let me tell you about the process and the ambition you need to have.

brat-child

1. You could get hate for being a kid.
That’s just the fact. Simply because you are a kid, you will get more flak than if you were twenty years old. Sure, if you were a 20 year old making bad videos, you’d still get flak, but if you’re a kid making bad videos, you don’t get flak – you get bullets. That high squeaky voice you have before you reach puberty? Just another thing to pick on. It’s just a part of some people’s nature to hate.

So be prepared for the haters.

2. You will need to do it all yourself.
The channel art, thumbnail, emails, icon, editing? They weren’t all magically made by somebody else. You want good channel art? You do it yourself, or you find someone else to do it for you. Chances are that person who is willing to do it for you is also willing to do it for hundreds of other people. Learn how to edit using computer programs like Photoshop or you are not going to last. Learn how to edit using professional video editing programs like Sony Vegas Pro. Learn how to attract subscribers. They mean nothing unless they willingly subscribe to you.

Learn how to do it yourself.

2nd_yogscast_competition_poster_by_jcshirotami-d5hqe1a

3. You will fail.
Keep this in your head at all times. You will fail and stumble along the way. However, receiving real feedback and improving on yourself only happens when you acknowledge this very fact. People who truly improve and grow at all times are people who take accountability and realize their own mistakes, then work on it for next time. Don’t disable comments or delete comments that say you’re boring. Keep them in mind and make an effort to be more exciting. The act of getting your aunt and uncle to subscribe to you means nothing because that’s just fake success.

You need to fail in order to learn. Keep it in mind.

4. Have fun.
Can’t stress this any more. HAVE FUN. What’s the point of doing this if you’re not having fun? If you’re promoting your channel to feel good about yourself, get praise, have a personal t-shirt, and to get money, you will fail for sure. People like to see a person whose having fun, not a person whose trying to mass promote themselves. Those are the side benefits of being a Youtuber. People who genuinely want to entertain people are simply cashing in on their talents.

Take the opportunity if you have it, but don’t solely aim for it.

That’s some of my tips for starting up a Youtube channel, especially if you’re a youth. Don’t be a brat when making a channel – accept, learn and move on from your mistakes. I created two Youtube channels with over a few hundred videos, which barely fifty of them made it to my channel, and they both completely failed. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to re-watch your videos after you record them, take notes, and then record again with the criticism you gave yourself in mind. Don’t give up just because you’re a kid. In ten or twenty years, you might be one of the funniest Youtubers because of all the experience you gained from when you were a kid!

Nelson 2Over the course of the last few weeks, Nelson Mandela, the out-going South-African anti-apartheid activist has been admitted at a hospital due to a recurring lung infection. The past South African president, whose life represents courage, hardship and perseverance, has been treated for his ailment before, but not quite to the same extent. Over the stay, his condition has fluctuated and brought on country-wide and eventually world-wide sympathy and concern. The man, who brought way for freedom and coexistence in South Africa, called for societal reform and gave hope for many others around the world, has led an extraordinary life, to be remembered for generations to come. With what impends, I felt it necessary for us to remember our dear revolutionary through his actions and life story.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 is a remote township in South Africa. He was born into the family of a town counselor, but his father died young. During his childhood years, South Africa was governed by the British. With the British bias, he was named Nelson by the primary school he attended near his township. He continued his education and eventually went to the Wesleyan College in Fort Beaufort, wielding a strong Christian religious basing bestowed to him by teachings from his devout mother.

His anti-imperialist thoughts were fueled throughout his time in Fort Beaufort and his later education. He saw the apartheid’s effects and felt for change along with many other boys his age. In his new all-black college, he studied for a degree. He was suspended from college for involvement in a boycott against the quality of food at the college. With many friends and connections, Mandela soon became involved in the ANC movement and informally attended meeting. Finally, in 1943, he finished his BA degree left unfinished from Beaufort.

Nelson 1

Dedicated for the demolition of the apartheid, he went on to found the ANCYL, the   Youth League of the African National Congress. After becoming more involved

and organizing meeting and eventually revolts, he was detained shortly after the Sharpeville Massacre. The ANC was banned in 1960, but the relentless Mandela went underground to the formation of a new lobbying group, the MK.

Nelson spent the next few years for military training and organization of his group. After inciting a revolution he was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment with other revolutionaries of his time. At his time in Robben Island, the dejected leader was not allowed visits from family and was given hard work. He frequently became ill and was diagnosed with prostate cancer, tuberculosis and pneumonia. After years of imprisonment, he was finally let out during rule of South African president FW de Klerk, due to public initiation. He quickly grew in fame and was voted president of South Africa in 1994. During this time as the president, Mandela remained neutral and pushed for reconciliation. He called for equality for all and respect.

After all the years of imprisonment, Mandela still held a positive attitude towards his former rivals, the facilitators of his hardships. Throughout his time, Mandela was president of South Africa, won the Nobel Prize, but what we all treasure are his values and his courage that will be carried on forever.

Thank you Madiba(local name)!

#YYCFloods: Calgary’s rioting waters and road to recovery, an infographic

0

As a result from the heavy rain that thundered across Alberta just a couple of weeks ago, Calgary was devastatingly affected, along with neighbouring towns. Whether one was in an evacuated area itself or safe from the reaches of flooding waters, the whole of the city was impacted all the same. It’s hard to imagine that all this happened barely two weeks ago, seeing tourists and locals excitedly bustling about for the Stampede season. However, over the past two weeks, the spirit of the city has apexed rather than stumbled into a bottomless void, and it has never been prouder to call ourselves Calgarians. Flood relief efforts responded admirably with vigor; although some residents downtown have yet been able to return to their homes, the recovery process has been an amazing ride. A storm of reconstruction fell our city, the city we all call home – and just as an illustration of the busy activity, Calgary Transit has been able to repair 100m of C-train tracks in less than a weeks’ time! The flashing posters exclaiming “We’re back on track for you!” at transit stations portray the extent of Calgary’s undying spirit.

One has undoubtedly seen the muddied waters that ruthlessly escaped the banks of the Elbow and Bow Rivers and followed its progress downstream. What has the journey been like?

Flood_2013_Full

It truly has been great to see all the support in the liveliness of the city. Be sure to check out more articles on the YYC Flood here. Have a great Stampede and summer!

My Interview With Bear Mountain!

My Interview with Bear Mountain! Great guys, truly!

Wow, two weeks later and I still get an adrenaline rush thinking about my interview with the amazing band Bear Mountain! A group of four talented men: Ian, Gregg, Kenji, and Kyle, coming together to form a fabulous band. Not only are they musically talented but they are also very down to earth, funny and dedicated people. I had the opportunity to interview them, the day of their performance at Sled Island! Till today I have the words of our laid-back and entertaining conversation ringing in my ears, if you haven’t noticed I am a huge fan! Without a doubt, they made the atmosphere very easy-going for my first official and planned interview and it was amazing!

We began talking about how their band formed, Ian Bevis replied by saying that a fellow band member and himself were musicians during their time at the University of Victoria. After finishing he left to create his own sound and do something of his own, a mixture of rock and more acoustic. Soon enough he met up with Kyle, introduced him to his sound and both Kyle and Gregg (Ian’s twin brother) were sold by the sound, a band was formed! Swiftly, Kenji also joined attracted to the sound of Bear Mountain and became the creative director! The band was formed baby!

And then of course I started with my 101 questions!

How was your band named formed?
They replied by saying that one day Ian was uploading their music to myspace and in order for the upload to be complete he had to have a name, thus he opened the pages of a book he was reading and the first two words he saw became the bands new identity, Bear Mountain.

What was your craziest experience being apart of a band?
Kyle replied by telling me they learnt how to rip apart phone books! There is a very strategic way and he said during their long trips this is one interesting task they had of many! Maybe they should make a DIY video on how to rip up phone books for all of us.

Do you still get nervous before each show?
They replied all in agreement by saying yes, they said that if you aren’t nervous-there is something wrong with you. They also said the adrenaline rush on stage is incredible, they feed off of the audience!

Do you, Bear Mountain, have any advice for youth aspiring artists?
Of course they did! They replied by saying hard work and being a nice person because no one likes working with a jerk. Ian shared that he had been in 6-7 bands that all fell apart and so did Kyle, yet they kept working hard, persevered and made a name for themselves. Go Bear Mountain.

If Bear Mountain is our inspiration, someone has got to inspire the band and I definitely wanted to know who, so my next question was: Who is the bands biggest inspiration?
PINK FLOYD! Obviously, but they also said it changes time from time individually but Pink Floyd is a common and big one for the band.

Ending remarks:
The band replied by saying there are tough parts of being in a band but they are happy with what they are doing.

So I guess I was just joking about the 101 questions but there were just enough to learn more about Bear Mountain’s story and how they came to be. Finally I would like to end by thanking: Bear Mountain, YouthAreAwesome, Sled Island, Amanda McCauly, and Carrie Mah for giving me this amazing opportunity. I will always cherish this interview!

Celebrate 25 years of the Cheesecake Cafe with Double Cherry Chocolate Cheesecake

For the past four years, when school comes to a close and summer makes its debut, my mom and I have commemorated the cornerstone by going to the Cheesecake  Cafe, and today, it remains a sort of tradition between us. As

My very delicious piece of cheesecake :)
My very delicious piece of cheesecake 🙂

much as I love to bake, its always a treat to go out for a piece of cheesecake, and to try something new every visit, I usually have the monthly feature.

This month, the Cheesecake Cafe celebrates its 25th anniversary with its double cherry chocolate cheesecake, a rich, creamy, smooth cheesecake with layers of fruity cherry taste. This dessert is not to be confused with the classic cherry cheesecake we all know and love- a new-york style cheesecake with a cherry topping, but instead boasts swirls of cherry goodness blended into a rich cheesecake, and served with whip cream. For those who are fans of both cheesecake and black forest cake this feature is, put simply, heavenly.

The Cheesecake Cafe has also done something very unique with their anniversary cheesecake, on their Facebook page boasting that the cake “features an edible QR code that you can scan with your smart phone to link to our online contest.” Every week the contest is drawn for $25 giftcard winners, and monthly a $250 giftcard winner is drawn.

First QR codes became common signs and stickers on the streets, online, and in print, now, it seems, they may be advancing onto our dinner plates, connecting us virally from any location, be it reading a paper on the train to work, or eating dessert in a restaurant, advancing technology and communication in new ways, before never imagined.

Unbeknownst to me, however, I happily dug into my cheesecake, wondering about the curious design on my chocolate briefly, before popping it into my mouth. Completely forgoing scanning my code isn’t all bad though, all the more reason to go back for another piece.

What are Speak Out Forums?

Speak Out Forums are small groups of discussions that have been happening all over the province. Students in grades 9-12 are invited to talk about their educational experience with the Speakout team.

At a Speak Out Forum, they are asked four questions:

  1. What does it look like when you are learning at your best?
  2. What is holding you back from learning at your best?
  3. What actions can ADULTS take to improve how education looks and feels?
  4. What actions can STUDENTS take to improve how education looks and feels?

You can be the forum host too!
