How to beat procrastination – or at least avoid it

0

images (15)

As we are nearing the end of the year, we are also nearing the end of the semester. For many, I’m sure that means more work to do and a lot to study for. If there’s one thing I know about highschoolers and work, it’s that it is usually put off. Whenever people find that they have some daunting task to do, suddenly everything but said task become much more interesting. Usually you’d put the task off until the last minute, especially if it’s math work if you’re like me (I don’t advise to follow this practice). When it comes to school though, procrastinating on anything is a big problem. I often found that when I procrastinate, the quality of my work goes down because I have to rush through it. Not only that, but I get increasingly stressed out when I procrastinate. Everyone procrastinates at one point or another. So how do you beat procrastination? Well, I’ve come up with a few tips that will hopefully help you (and me) out.

procrastination 1. Cut off all distractions. By distractions, I mean anything that could make you un-focus from what you are supposed to be working on. In other words, pretty much all forms of social media and the internet should be away from you. Even your phone should be away from you when you do your homework or project. If you have  your phone while you’re doing work, chances are you’ll find yourself texting your friends or just playing around with your phone in general instead of what you’re supposed to be doing. When I say social media, I do mean everything. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. are all forms of social media, and although are enjoyable, they can easily distract you for hours from your initial task. So If you want to get work done, cut off all distractions. You can do this by putting your phone out of reach from you, staying away from any electronic device that has access to the internet, and finally just finding a place where you think you can do you best work without problems.

He has a point there.
He has a point there.

2. Prioritize.

Ask yourself what’s most important and has to be finished first by making a list. Prioritizing can show you just what needs to be done, and when, so you have an idea of what you need to start doing. Then make goals with your list, and make sure they have deadlines. Finally, break the goals into small pieces. Some people procrastinate because they feel that the task they have to do is too much to handle, and is overwhelming. If you break the goal into small pieces, doing things step by step at a certain pace then the task will be much easily handled. Stay committed to your goals as well, otherwise making them was pointless.

Wise words to remember.
Wise words to remember.

3. Visualize what you want to achieve.

With a goal in mind, you should also have an idea of what you want your final product of work to look like. If you want it to look good, you have to put work into it, and not the kind of quality that you’d get from doing something last minute. Visualizing and planning out what you want the end result to be will help you at least be motivated enough to finish.

4. Do some of it in class.

If you’re given time in class to finish your homework, then actually do it. Don’t slack off or talk with your friends, that will just leave you with more work to do when you get home. If you do some of your work when you’re in class, then you’ll have less to do when you get home, leaving you to do what you wish. If you have a spare, you can even do it then.

5. Don’t make excuses.

One of the many things people who procrastinate do is make excuses for why they don’t get their work done. A common one I hear is that they didn’t have time. Granted, sometimes the excuses are valid, but many times they just aren’t. Stop making excuses and just get it done. The longer you put it off, the more your grades will suffer. Not only that, but if you keep putting it off, then it may never get done.

Its now, not later. It's now, or never.
Its now, not later. It’s now, or never.

6. Start by doing the hardest task.

Or worst task, it doesn’t really matter. I know it sounds horrible, but if you get done the thing you hate or dread most first, then you can go on to the things that are easier to do, and you’ll have finished the more difficult things already. Also, once its all over you feel relieved because you no longer have to worry about it. So it works in a positive way.

7. Take the first step.

Once you come up with what you have to do, just start on it. You’ll never get anywhere if you don’t start anything after all. This may be the hardest step for some, but it only takes a minute to start into something fully. If you keep going, before you know it you could be done with it. And nothing satisfies like the feeling of knowing that you’ve accomplished something.

8. Finish what you started.

Some procrastinators may start something, then stop doing it all together and finish it last minute. This is another bad practice, and is just a bad habit in general. If you’re going to start on something, then just finish it instead of leaving it after only a little while of working.

Don't do it last minute, finish it before its due.
Don’t do it last minute, finish it before its due.

9. Reward yourself for you work.

Only after you’re done everything will you feel truly accomplished enough to do something to reward yourself. It could even be your motivation to finish. Whether its through hanging out with friends or getting something to eat, rewarding yourself after you’ve done your work can make you feel great, without your consciousness telling you what you should be doing instead.

So there you have it, some tips to help you beat procrastination. If you’re reading this right now, than I hope you’re not prcrastinating. If you are, then I suggest putting some of these tips into practice. 😉 For more tips on how to stop procrastinating, check out here and here.

Christmas gift guide: DIY edition

Presents

Snow is covering the ground. Christmas lights are twinkling. Trees all decked out are becoming a common sight in living room windows. Christmas music is being blasted in the malls and on the radio 24/7 (if you listen to lite 95.9 that is). Malls are becoming increasingly busy; yes folks, the holidays are upon us. And quite frankly, it’s about time.

If you’re anything like me and you don’t fancy spending hours on end wading through seas of people at the mall, or you are too lazy simply don’t have the time, then I have the solution to your holiday dilemma… DIY Christmas gifts! A quick trip to the craft store and a couple of hours in the peace and quiet of your own home, and you’re good to go for the majority of these projects. I’ve divided it up into categories, and I’ve done my best to include something for everyone on your list. Without further ado, my favorite do-it-yourself Christmas gift ideas:

Gift for the Ladies

I think most girls can agree that jewelry makes a great gift for any occasion. What’s nice about making your own is that you can customize it to the person you are giving the gift to as well as to the holiday, if you so wish to. I found a great blog post that explains well how to make these pretty thread bracelets.

My list of overexposed things in 2013

0

In the footsteps of one of my favorite YouTubers, Kingsley, I have decided to do my own Overexposed 2013. For anyone who doesn’t know who he is or what Overexposed means, it is pretty much a list of certain things such as songs, viral videos, celebrities and more that have gotten way too much hype this year and are basically overrated. So without further ado, here is my list of Overexposed 2013!

1. Vine: I do not see the appeal in Vine, and do not have an account. What is the point of the seven second video when you can just use the Instagram video feature or just put it on YouTube or Facebook? Some of them, like Bat Dad, are hilarious, but I think there are better platforms to put these videos on. I also do not appreciate the fact that these Vines are taking over my Facebook news feed. They are on a different social media site for a reason; keep them there.

2. Bed Intruder Song (Hide Your Kids Your Wife): I know this was a little while back, but it was annoying then and it’s still annoying now when someone occasionally sings it in the school hallway.

Bed Intruder Song Image Source: inmyjimmychoos.com

3. Chloe Meme: You know Chloe, that little adorable, sassy girl from the Disneyland Surprise video? Her reaction to her sister freaking out over going to Disneyland was priceless, for the first three times the video was shown. Now I just make the same face as her every time someone tries to talk about that video.

4. North West: No I am not talking about the direction; I am talking about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s baby. The baby made headlines before she was even born. Although she will probably hate her name, I bet everyone else hates it even more, since that is all anyone has talked about the past few months.

Ariana Grande

5. Ariana Grande: I’m sorry but I do not think she is that special. Sure she can do Whistle Tones, that it very impressive. But I believe she is trying too hard to sound like Mariah Carey. She needs to build her own style and get off my Tumblr Dash.

6. Cruise By Florida Georgia Line: I immediately hated this song. It wasn’t even a wavering hate, like maybe if I listen to it more I’ll like it. I hate country to begin with but I do not understand how you can mix Country and Rap and actually get a positive response from it! I know a ton of people love this song but I cringe every time I hear it; Rap and Country need to stay a separate genre.

So there you have it, my rant about everything popular this year. Add your own overexposed items in the comments below!

ConnecTeen: For when you need to talk

0

banner01If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance that you’re a teenager.

And if you’re a teenager, there’s a very good chance that your life isn’t always smooth sailing. We’ve all been there. Confused, angry, depressed, anxious, hopeless. And often times, there isn’t anybody to talk to. Sure, you probably have close friends and great family, but sometimes you just can’t get the message across to them.

Luckily, there’s another way to let it out. You may have heard of the Kids Help Phone, a service that allows you to anonymously and confidentially talk to a counsellor on the phone or online. Right here in Calgary, there is now another route you can take: ConnecTeen. Like the Kids Help Phone, ConnecTeen provides you with support when you need it. What’s special about ConnecTeen is that you are connected with a fellow teenager who’s volunteered and been trained to be a supportive pair of ears.

Calling over the phone and having to talk audibly may not always be a solution for teens, so ConnecTeen has other options too. Along with calling them at 403-264-TEEN (8336), you can sign in and chat on their website, email ConnecTeen@distresscentre.com, or even type rather than talk by texting 587-333-2724.

Most importantly, remember that someone is always willing to talk to you, many, many people care about you, and you are an irreplaceable individual.

How to go on an international youth volunteer trip

0

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice.”-Nelson Mandela

Going to the other side of the world to volunteer? Why do that when you can volunteer in your local community?

After attending WeDay Alberta 2013, my interest in international volunteer trips was once again stirred up. I was part of the World Vision Youth Leadership trip this summer, and it really did change my life. There are so many amazing things you can do to help in the community, but seeing poverty in my eyes was a totally different experience. Being immersed into the local culture and the love they offer to everyone, I recognized how many of us really take our privileges for granted.

Now I know it may sound cliche, but I really believe that if everyone can come together, we CAN impact the world and make it a better place. In a world of over 7 billion people, your small deeds may seem insignificant, but all it takes is a small step to start a sea of change. Whether this be in on the issues of peace, environmental conservation, poverty, human rights, injustice, we as youth must: “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”-Mahatma Gandhi

Two amazing organizations, Free the Children and World Vision Canada, are both offering global volunteer trips for 2014. I challenge you to step up and join on one of these life-changing experiences!

Favorite non-disney movie: The Land Before Time

0

When I was a kid I watched movies all the time. Mostly they were Disney, of course, but some of them were amazing and heart warming non-Disney movies. Though I often fell for movies like Cinderella and the Lion King, The Land Before Time has been apart of my childhood that I wanted to share because it is equally as awesome as the Disney movies I have watched.

The Land Before Time brings back great memories. If you haven’t seen this movie, you have certainly missed out on a great experience. This movie is worth checking out. The characters in the movie are endearing. It follows a group of five dinosaurs at a young age. They all lost their families and are of a different species. Their goal is to teach the Great Valley. So they bond together in order to achieve this. In the Great Valley there is plenty of food and water. When the teach the valley they can finally be at peace. Overall I would give this movie a 4.5 out of 5 rating and it is for sure a great non-Disney movie that you can enjoy with your friends, family or even by yourself.

The spirit of the blizzard in Calgary

0

nevada-blizzard1
For the past three days, Calgary has been badly affected by the weather conditions. The blizzard, with its snowstorm and wind gusts, literally splashed the city with that white matter. Walking or driving in that knee-deep snow was nothing less than an adventure ride.

On one such “adventure drive,” all I expected to see was the snow, slush, traffic, accidents, and what not. But in reality, I saw something more important and certainly more beautiful than those horrible things; I could see and feel the spirit of the city. People getting out of their cars to help an unknown driver get his car out from the snow. I saw four or five drivers offer lifts to people waiting for the bus. I also saw a group of youth go around the streets distributing jackets and winter clothing. Believe me guys, it was -19, and with the wind chill it felt like -26 at that time of the day. But these low temperatures could not freeze the warm hearts of Calgarians.

Looking at all this, I felt nothing but humbled and blessed to be surrounded by these unknown heroes. They are angels to the people they helped.

Their names will never be in the news. But they do deserve our respect and love. So here is to all the
Calgarians who stand for each other in times of strife. Calgarians, who are so willing to help others risking their own lives, and to those Calgarians who foster the spirit of selflessness around the city and thus make Calgary a truly beautiful place inside out.

2nd installment of Hunger Games trilogy even better than the first

0

I watched Catching Fire on opening day; here are a few reasons why it was amazing.

images

The movie stayed true to the book. Although the movie was even more fast paced, it was almost word for word with the book. Only a few events were missing. The emotions and the sequences of events remained untouched.

The emotion of this movie was executed perfectly. The acting was incredible. Jennifer Lawrence probably showed more emotion in this movie than I have in my entire life. The rest of the actors were amazing as well. Somehow, every single actor portrayed their character impeccably. Each character also had a lot of depth, all of them showing layers of their personality. One character that I was particularly interested in was Effie Trinket, because she showed so many conflicting emotions at once. Even though she is ultimately a pawn of Capital, she showed a true and genuine attachment to her District 12 tributes. Another character I loved was Peeta, because he displayed so much love and understanding for Katniss. He played the part so perfectly, showing the giddiness of a crush and a mature love that he held back for Katniss. Finnick was also perfect. Sam Caflin was cast so well; he captured Finnick’s essence perfectly.

the-hunger-games-catching-fire-sam-claflin1
Sam Caflin as Finnick Odair

I would also add that, on screen, the actors really showed the right amount of emotion in every scene. Nothing was overdone or overlooked. Not only was the acting well done individually, but together as a whole.

The chemistry between the characters was very evident. The cast worked together tremendously and managed perfect harmony on screen. The actors interacted with each other the way the book intended. I think that the cast displayed the complicated relationships between the characters well. And they understood the complexity of each character individually, as well the relationships between characters.

I can’t oversell the acting in this movie. I was emotionally invested in the book and in the movie as well. I teared up at several parts of the movie. I had friends that cried multiple times throughout the film.

o-CATCHING-FIRE-PHOTOS-570
Finnick (Caflin) and Katniss (Lawrence) in training

I thought this installment of the Hunger Games Trilogy was even better than the first. Whether it was the change in directors, or the addition to the cast, Catching Fire was was a lot better paced, emotionally riveting and ultimately superior to the previous Hunger Games movie. The animations of the arena were as amazing and detailed as always and the game crueler than ever!

The script was also very well written. It allowed for more characters to develop, rather than just the main characters. We got a better understanding of Prim, Gale, Finnick, Johanna and even President Snow. Which ultimately leaves us with more questions about them. And more questions about the cliffhanger ending of Catching Fire, which is why I am so excited for the sequel, Mockingjay, to hit theatres on Nov 21, 2014. Mockingjay will be spilt into two parts, so we will be on our toes for at least two more years awaiting news of the rebellion in Panem.hunger-games-catching-fire-wide

Festive foods: Fruitcake

1

Nothing says Christmas like fruitcake, or at least in my mind, as this classic holiday loaf has decorated my Christmas table since childhood Christmas dinners spend at my grandmother’s house, where the only thing I liked better was her shortbread (wait for it, that’ll be coming later!). Fruitcake is a cake made with chopped nuts, candied fruits, spices, and soaked in liquor (of course, this step is optional). Unless it is for religious beliefs, I would suggest soaking the cake in sherry, as this adds a wonderful richness of flavour to the cake, which would seem lacking without it. Generally, because of this rich taste, the cake is served without cream or other toppings, although in the United Kingdom it has become custom to ice or decorate the cake in some way (like my grandmother before me, I top my cake with marzipan). If you’re planning on soaking your fruitcake in sherry, its best to make the cake at least a month in advance, to allow time for the flavours to soak in.

And now, without further ado, I present to you the Morris family recipe for Dark Fruitcake, thanks to my grandma;

Let the mixed fruit and nuts sit overnight
Let the mixed fruit and nuts sit overnight

Wash the following then combine in a large bowl:

1.5 lbs raisins

1 lb currants

Add:

1/2 lb dates, chopped

1/4 lb candied cherries

1 c. candied ginger, chopped

1/2 lb candied pineapple

1/2 lb mixed peel and fruit

1/2 lb halfed walnuts

Pour 1/2 c. grape juice concentrate,  1/2 c. water, and 1/3 c. strong coffee over the fruit and nuts, mixing well. Let sit overnight.

Cream 1 c. butter/margarine with 1 c. sugar, then beat in 5 eggs one at a time.

Combine 1 c. flour with the fruit.

In another bowl, sift together 2 c. flour, 1.5 tsp. baking powder, 1 tsp. cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp. allspice. Add to the baked fruitcakebatter, stir, then pour over the fruit. Make sure to mix it well until the fruit and nuts are evenly distributed.

Grease loaf pans (two or three will do), and fill them approximately 2/3 full.

Bake the cakes at 300 F for 2.5-3 hours.

Check with a toothpick to see if they are done, then remove them from the oven and let them cool before removing them from their pans. Place the cakes on the cheesecloth, in a plastic bag which is open, and pour about a quarter c. of sherry over each cake, wrap them up in the cheesecloth, and tie up the bag, ensuring none of the sherry “escapes.” Store the cakes in a cool dry place, like a basement, and check them once a week to see if they’re dry. If so, add a little more sherry to keep them moistened.

If you want to try topping your cakes with marzipan, stay tune for the part two of my fruitcake blog, which will be coming closer to Christmas!

How to choose a Christmas tree

It is 21 days until Christmas. The first advent already passed, some Christmas fanatics have already finished Christmas shopping, some have just started, and some lay it off until last minute.

No matter what type of person, everyone agrees they love a good Christmas tree – decorating it is so much fun!

But every time Christmas comes along, some families aren’t sure what kind of tree to get.

Everyone knows of the “normal” Christmas tree you can buy at Superstore or Walmart. They smell like Christmas and are neat, until closer to Christmas when they start losing all their needles. Then it’s a hot mess, especially with kids and pets and presents in between. This can ruin the excitement and joy that has come from cutting the family tree personally, another option for a family that really wants a real Christmas tree.

A lot of families have come to the conclusion that the entire hassle that comes with a Christmas tree can be eliminated by a one-time-purchase of a plastic Christmas tree. There is no cleaning up to do, no discarding once Christmas is over, and no driving every year to a store to buy a new tree. Sounds perfect, it’s easy, but now the authenticity that comes with the smell is gone. And Christmas tree smell candles don’t get it back!

Now, in the Unites States, an entrepreneur came up with a concept that he put into action is his own company “The Living Christmas Co.”. Their concept is that they grow Christmas trees from just seeds to actual Christmas trees, and do so with many different types of trees. They then put them online, and families can rent the live trees, which are then delivered to the families by elves, Santa’s reindeers and other Christmas characters. The tree is alive, smells like a Christmas tree, doesn’t lose needles like dead trees, and the cool thing is that year after year, the same family gets the same tree back, truly making it a part of their family’s Christmas!

Maybe YOU will be the bright mind that brings it to Canada!

Merry pre-Christmas season, and happy shopping!

Sensitivity over allegedly racist sports names

0

Recently, the National Congress of American Indians created and spread a video protesting the use of the archaic and derogatory term “redskin” for the football team, the Washington Redskins.  The video features members of the Aboriginal community defying the “caricature” that still persists and somehow seems to allow the use of such words to pass uncriticized by mainstream society.  They’ve gained widespread support, including Washington’s mayor, on the matter.

This made me wonder about my own high school, Western Canada High School, where our school mascot/team name is the Western Redmen. As far as I’m aware, the term “redmen” does not hold the same offensive connotations as “redskin” does, however our team logo and the fact that the choice seems completely arbitrary in a school with little aboriginal representation or connection to First Nations. It also makes me wonder what the public reaction would be if our team were to be of a different colour with another caricature painted on the wall.

This is quite literally painted on the wall of our gym (image source)

Western Canada is a fairly old high school; it’s part of the history and tradition the institution. It would end up being an extravagant venture financially to change all the logos in the gym and on clothes (although perhaps we could garner some corporate sponsorship if we considered changing it to “bull” instead of “men”?)

Is this oversensitive? I think that on this issue I have no say; whether or not something is offensive should be determined by the concerned group or person. Even if it is oversensitive, I don’t think it’s necessarily bad. Consider the recent controversy surrounding a chant during frosh week at SMU and all the chagrin it has rusted up (and rightfully so, I believe). Of course, we don’t want to fall into the trap of oversensitivity and censorship—opinions and dissent are important, but somehow I think that the names of sports teams or university spirit chants are hardly carrying important messages that would be compromised by changing a word. Or several.
