National flags made of food?!

Today, I decided that I would show you guys and interesting website that I had come across during the weekend. Several flags from various countries around the world are highlighted. You might think this sounds boring, but wait until you hear the rest. Each of these flags are made using traditional food from each country. It’s amazing too see that so much can be accomplished when you put in a little effort and allow your imagination to soar. These flags are completed with precision and accuracy. Prepare to be amazed:

The Timelapse Tales: Fascination after Nightfall

0

We all ponder upon the stars; whether it’s the constellations or the otherwise great patterns, it’s a mystical occurrence. Calgary’s light pollution can prevent us from seeing spectacular images of the night sky, something that this video by NOVELAPSE timelapse recordings might be able to remedy:

As always, check out all the other timelapses I’ve shared on YAA when you grab a chance to.

The Year of the Horse: Chinese New Years

0

New Years may have happened already, but Chinese New Years is today (January 31st), and I’d like to reveal the little traditions that make this “new year” so fun.

First is the Chinese zodiac, and much like the western zodiac, it consists of 12 “signs.” But instead of signs like Libra, Capricorn, Leo, etc., we use animals. In order, the animals are: Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Your Chinese zodiac is determined by the year you were born. Most astrology websites can help you find your Chinese zodiac, if you’re curious.

http://www.chinasprout.com/store/media/ANR058L01.jpg

But Chinese New Years is so much more than just our zodiac – there are little traditions that I learned growing up in a predominantly Buddhist-Taoist family (I say Taoist because Buddhism has many branches of religion). Below are a couple of my favourite traditions, beginning with the lucky red envelopes, known in Vietnamese as lì xì (shown on the right).

These small red envelopes usually contain money, and are often given out on Chinese New Years. Amongst family, children often receive these from their parents, uncles and aunts. The money, however, never has the digit 4 in it, as the digit 4 also resembles the word “death” in Chinese, and is therefore, bad luck. As an unemployed (and therefore broke) teenager, you can see why this is my favourite tradition.

The next little tradition I love are the Chinese fortune sticks. They probably have a proper title, but I always knew them as fortune sticks. These are flat sticks that are usually red on one side, with a number on the other. There’s somewhere around 100 sticks, all put inside a tall bamboo cup. After you pay reverence to the deities at the temple, you would kneel and form a question. After you have your question, you shake the cup in a slightly downward motion until one stick falls out. If more than one falls out, you have to do it again. Afterwards, you go to a numbered letterbox and find the corresponding number on the stick. There are hundreds of fortunes per stick, and no two fortunes are the same. You put the stick back into the bamboo cup, and take your slip of paper with the fortune on it to an interpreter. This interpreter will do what their job title describes, and interpret what may happen in the coming year. Interpreters also occasionally offer different services as well, such as face or palm reading (I’ve always wanted to try both).

I’m a sucker for astrology, so fortune sticks and face reading just draw me in. But traditions aside, Chinese New Years is a time of both receiving and giving luck and good omens.

I wish I could tell you more about Chinese New Years (including bribing a kitchen God – that’s a long story in and of itself), but for now, I wish you good health and happiness, and a happy Chinese New Years!

Video of the day : Why we play sports?

0

As the Olympics approach, everyone is super excited about the rigour and the Olympic podium. However, have you ever wondered why we play sports? Why are we willing to invest so much money, time and effort into a few people fighting for a ball, a puck, etc.?

Watch this interesting video, that does an amazing job at delivering that we humans actually try to get a lot more out of a sport than the game itself.  It explains the addictive desire to play or watch sports once started.

The faults in our (movie) stars

0

I know, I know that title was probably the worst thing you’ve ever read but I needed your attention somehow. As most people with an internet connection and friends may know, the amazing and witty love story, the Fault in Our Stars By John Green, is being fault-our-stars-movie-posterreleased as a movie on June 6. You may also know that the movie trailer has officially come out and this is a very special event, for me at least, and many other teenage girls around the world. If you haven’t read the book I highly suggest going to do that right now. Basically the story is about Hazel Grace and Augusts Waters, two cancer patients, Augusts being in remission and Hazel suffering from thyroid cancer, meet at a support group and eventually fall in love.

Before I go any further be sure to check out the trailer here:

I want to talk about what I thought of it and what I now expect from the full length film.

1. Hazel and Augusts: Obviously Shailene (Hazel) have great  Ansel (Gus) chemistry, since they worked together already in Divergent, so that was fantastic. However I absolutely love Shailene’s acting but I just don’t think she looks the part for Hazel Grace. With that said, Ansel looks like the perfect Augusts, but I don not really like his acting. I feel like it is quite forced.

2. Quality: Although I want to think the story is not another cheesy teen romance, deep down I know it is. I just hope the movie isn’t super cheesy and teeny bopper, however judging by the trailer I think it will. Every now and then though I do enjoy a good trashy teen novel but I’m not too big on the extra cheesy dialogue and acting they put in movies made for teens.

3. My biggest expectation: I really do hope my favorite scenes will turn out as magical and memorable as they did in the book. fault-in-our-stars-movie-hazel-gusI just really hope they don’t tamper with certain bits such as the famous swing set scenes, and I was super happy to see the egging scene because that leads me to my favorite quote from the book; “You daughter’s car has been egged by a blind man. Please go back inside or I’ll be forced to call the police.”

4. Most excited to see on screen: Without a doubt, I can not wait until I get to see the scenes where they are in Peter Van Houten’s  house discussing An Imperial Affliction and truly see the craziness up close and personal.

I hope and encourage you to leave your opinions about the trailer or your expectations in the comments below!

The rewards of being part of a sports team

When I was younger, I distinctly remember myself being the embodiment of the popular idiom “There is no ‘I’ in team.” I never really wanted to work with anyone else, never mind be part of a team. But little did I know that being on a sports team can be very rewarding and can help you become, as cheesy as it is to say, a better person.

I started playing on a competitive volleyball team last year and have continued into this year. I can proudly say that I have had some really wonderful experiences because I have been on a team. There’s something so cliché about saying how having the opportunity to be a team member can be so impactful, but I think it just must be stated.

There shouldn’t be anyone who can’t say that being on a team doesn’t help you develop the obvious: teamwork and collaboration skills. By having the opportunity to work with different people with different attitudes, you learn how to better deal with people who have different ideals than you and how to have better people skills. The ability to work cooperatively with others is an irrefutable life skill that will never fail to serve you later in life.

From Wikipedia...I know I lack creativity...
From Wikipedia…I know I lack creativity…

Being part of a team is like having a second family. You have another external support system in place. And just like all other families, you have your fights and problems but there is always resolution. The bonds you can create with teammates because of your experience working together are something that no one can question.

You are also able to learn about what it takes to win and how to deal with losing. The work that you do as an individual affects your team and if you have no work ethic, it will have an impact on your team and you will be able to see what you’ve done wrong. When it comes to losing, you have people there in the exact same situation and you can deal with is as a collectivity who are there to support each other and figure out how you need to improve.

All in all, if you ever have the chance to become part of a sports team, be that competitive or not, I highly recommend not letting that chance pass. Even if you aren’t much of an athlete, it will most certainly be an impactful choice. The skills you can learn and the relationships that you get to develop are something that even the best piece of writing couldn’t do justice to.

Awesome youth in profile: Alexandra Wadey

0

Alexandra (Alex) Wadey is a grade 12 student at William Aberhart High School who was recognized by Kids up Front and Youth Central as a part of the Pay it Forward project, recognizing youth for their “pay it forward” attitude. Alex is a kind and positive volunteer, participating in Youth Week and being a member of the Mayor’s Youth Council. She is influential not only within Youth Central, but also plays her part in contributing to her school. I had the chance to meet up and chat with this wonderful young lady at the Devonian Gardens.

Alex and I met a little birdy named Bob during our interview!
Alex and I met a little birdy named Bob during our interview!

Q: How did you find out about Youth Central?

“I found out about Youth Central through a network of friends who were either already involved or who had mutual friends that were. [I found out through a friend of mine from junior high named Fatemeh in Grade 9], and in Grade 10 I applied so then I knew about Youth Central and I got more involved with the Mayor’s Youth Council and Youth Week. That’s how it progressed for the most part; through friends.”

Q: Is there any specific reason you chose to join the Mayor’s Youth Council and Youth Week?

“Well, Youth Week I kind of got pulled into, I didn’t know about it coming into it. Fatemeh was actually involved with it the first year I was in the Mayor’s Youth Council (Grade 10), and then they wanted another person involved with Youth Central. So, they chose me based on my interview and other conversations that I had. I didn’t really apply for it; I just got thrown into it which was a little bit of a shock.”

Q: What motivates you to participate in things such as Youth Week and MYC? Why is this important to you?

“Well, it’s fun. [Honestly, if I have a bad day] I can go into Youth Central and it’s such a positive environment. The people that are on, especially the MYC since I’ve worked with them so long, I’m really close with. It’s a really good environment to be in and to be in a group of people who want to work on the same things that you want to work on is really exciting. When you’re in the classroom there’s a lot of people that don’t want to be there so it’s not as motivating. But, it’s really motivating to be around people that want to do the same things as me.

I would love to be involved with politics, or something in that area, so already having a foot in and seeing how things work when you’re working on a committee and having that contact with the municipal government and the mayor ties into my interests a little bit more. I also love doing something where I see such a direct outcome. I see the results and I know what I’m doing; [I see that it’s significant and tangible].

There’s lots of reasons I love Youth Central and what I do, but I’d say those are the [main things].”

Q: What are you involved with at your school?

“[I’m not debating right now], but I am on debate, I’m on mock trial, and the Principal’s Advisory Council which looks to connect the staff and students and make sure Abe is a more cohesive unit. [It’s not school specific, but I’m on CSAC (Chief Superintendent Advisory Council)] and I’m the school representative for CSAC.”

Q: You mentioned that in Grade 9 you were too intimidated to sign up for anything. Looking back, would you recommend to current Grade 9 students to go for it?

“Yes… I mean, I feel like being on the other end of the process doing interviews for the MYC, sometimes Grade 9 is too young. We do tend to take people who are older so in that respect I am sort of glad that I went in Grade 10 because I feel like there’s a chance that if I had gone in Grade 9, I wouldn’t have been ready for the role. Nobody likes to get rejected, so I’m happy I went when I did but if it’s not going for something like the MYC, I would encourage people to get more involved with their school and volunteering at a younger age. [I think that it’s always good to start early and to get that foot in instead of waiting until Grade 12 like some people. I also think that it’s a good character experience, so yes. I would encourage people to get involved younger.”

#selfie

Q: Do you think your experiences helped to shape the person you are now?

“Oh yeah, I mean actually making it onto the Mayor’s Youth Council was a big step. When you make it onto something like that, especially when so many people don’t out of all the people that apply, it makes you feel good about yourself. You’re a bit more confident with yourself and in your abilities, so that was good. It helped me build my confidence.

Working with people has helped me learn how to work with a number of different types of people. Instead of being able to work with people who work similarly to me, I learned to work with a variety with people which is good. It’s a good life skill to have.

[I think my experiences] caught my interest, especially meeting the mayor. It’s funny because with people like local celebrities or politicians they’re almost superficial in a sense that you see them, but they’re almost not a real person. Coming face-to-face and seeing the personal traits and the things that I admire in him as a mayor and seeing that type of person helped me want to be involved with politics a little bit more.”

Thank you so much, Alex for meeting with me. I had a lovely time chatting with you!

What do the top seven songs on iTunes mean?

0

If anyone knows me, they know that I don’t like most of music’s top 40, or even the world’s top 100. But songs are popular for a reason, so I decided to endeavour to listen to these songs and see what they actually mean.  So I went on iTunes to see what the top 7 songs were and analyzed  all of them.

Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J) – Katy Perry imgres

In this song, Katy Perry is basically letting a man know that she doesn’t have to lift a finger to attract him. She is actually telling a man that they better know that, if they get involved with her, that she deserves the best, and that once you get involved with her, there is not going back. She is saying that she requires hard work to be with her, and she expects the best and will accept no less.

imagesSay Something (feat. Christina Aguilera) – A Great Big World

It took me a while to figure out what this song was about, but I think that it one the most intense songs in the industry at the moment. This song is deep and heartfelt and it’s a very raw performance. I personally think that the song is about lost love that wasn’t really appreciated or realized until it was over. Two people were in a relationship, and they decided to move on and give up on it because nobody had said anything. So they parted ways.

imgres

Timber (feat. Ke$ha) – Pitbull

Let’s be honest, most Pitbull songs don’t really have much of a meaning, most of his songs are about party, one night stands, and getting drunk, and this song is no exception. Ke$ha is yelling Timber because the party is going down, so don’t miss out!  The song is basically about a really crazy party. Based on the lyrics, most of the people there are gonna be too drunk to remember anything but Ke$ha, because she parties hard.

Hunter-Hayes-2014-300-01Invisible- Hunter Hayes

I was really surprised when I liked this song, mostly because I don’t like country. But this song was actually really deep and relatable. In this song, Hunter Hayes reveals a past of bullying, and he is assuring people that the pain does stop, and it gets better. Teenagers often feel ignored, or invisible, and it hurts. This song is a reminder that things do get better, and no emotion will last forever.

images

Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z) – Beyonce

This song features the world class couple, Beyonce and Jay Z. THis entire song is about their relationship and how much they love each other. How they love the passion in their relationship and how they couldn’t be happier with each other. I’m personally not a huge fan of this song, but I must admit that it is incredibly catchy and deserves it rightful spot in the top 10 on iTunes.

Team – Lorde imgres

This song is one of my favourites, seeing as I own Lorde’s entire album. Like a lot of her songs, this song has a lot to do with loyalty to where you are and picking your battles wisely. As she has mentioned before, Lorde is proud of where she is from, and this song has a lot to do with that. Where she comes from, they believe that its better to be poor and beautiful rather than being rich and hollow. This song also talks about working together and being loyal to the people you are surrounded by. Lorde also teaches us that as you get older, there is more at stake, so fight for what you believe in and choose your wars carefully.

Counting Stars – OneRebublic

Counting Stars is a song about striving to be better. It’s about someone who has lost their way, and wants to achieve their dreams, but must eliminate a huge obstacle to do so. For example, if you wanted to be a writer, but you were also illiterate, like counting stars, trying would be in vain. The song is essentially the sad truth about a lot of people, that some goals may seem unattainable, but are strived for anyways.

How to get a job

0

What do you do when you can’t get a job? For most, this is a hard question to tackle and some turn to resumé gimmicks. Although lots of times these don’t work, sometimes they do hit well with bosses.

Most of the time, professional recruiters are trained to block out creative resumes and turn them down immediately. Senior recruiting manager Bobby Gormsen tells the Wall Street Journal that “[He’s] sort of immune to this stuff.” He looks for hard evidence that the person behind the resumé has had experience and training in the field rather than people who use tactics to attract attention. Sometimes, there are even machines that are sent through systems that rank resumes based on the number of keywords hit. In these circumstances, creative resumes don’t work anymore.

Sometimes, these resume gimmicks seem to attract a lot of attention and successfully land you a job. They certainly give the recruiters a break from all the traditional resumes and let you stand out. In addition, these types of resumes allow you to show your dedication because these require more time and energy than traditional resumes where you could just write one for 10 different jobs. To learn more about the pros and cons of cheeky resumes, click here.

Aleks Kamko spent six hours writing a script for a video that he filmed in the hallway of his dorm, and 18 hours editing it. This video landed him a job as a coveted internship at Facebook Inc.

Next to this college student, Adam Pacitti is also another user of resume gimmicks. He has sent out 250 resumes and received two rejections and no responses from the other 248. He decided to rent a billboard that says, “I spent my last £500 on this billboard. Please give me a job. Employadam.com.” He soon got job offers from all different sectors of the job market.

So how do you get a job? If you are a youth looking for a summer job, maybe these creative resumes will get you just what you need. If you have any ideas for cool resumes, leave them in the comments below!

Laurier Lounge limited and average

0

Laurier Lounge is known as a high quality French restaurant. I did not find it to be as high quality as it should have been. The service was excellent and attentive, but was a bit slow. The menu is very limited so I recommend you check out the menu prior to going to this restaurant, should you choose to go. The food was average; not bad but not fantastic. Probably the safest thing to order would be the fondues, which were tasty. I ordered the Heritage Prime Beef Bourguignon; everything throughout the dish tasted exactly the same, due to it being drenched in sauce. The ambiance of the restaurant wasn’t great due to it being so dark and the candles given went out making it hard to read the menu or see the well plated dishes. Overall, going to this restaurant was an interesting experience.

Cason Crane, an LGTBQ inspiration

0

malikaCason Crane is a humble, down to earth, generous, courageous, determined, and driven human being brought up in New Jersey and was the first LGBTQ person to climb the seven summits of the world. At such a young age, to me he stands not only as an inspiration for the LGBTQ community but also a symbolic representation of change. I believe Cason Crane is changing the world step-by-step, summit by summit! I was fortunate to be able to interview Crane over the winter break and gain insight and knowledge, and I would like to share that with all of you to inspire you to reach new heights – a lot like Cason did.

So really who is Cason Crane, where is he from, and how did his story begin?

His journey
He had two different starting points, one would be his mountaineering journey that started when he was fifteen, when he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, with his mother, which hooked him onto climbing and mountaineering. And the second was the start of his Rainbow Summits journey, the suicide prevention program, which started when he was in high school. Cason lost a very close friend of his to suicide; this tragedy was quite shocking, which caused Cason to reflect and grieve and took him a couple years before he found a way to connect both his love for mountaineering and his desire to make a difference in suicide prevention. This resulted in the Rainbow Summits project.

Advice for other youth
He said, “First thing I’d say is that you are already on the right track, if you are interested and reading about tips and want tips, that is the first step. Then from there I would say the most important thing is just find an issue that you are passionate about. The final thing I am going to say is that it is going to be difficult, we are all going to face challenges, especially when you are trying to give back; don’t get discouraged. There are going to be times when it feels like it is so frustrating but you just have to keep going one day after another, one foot in front of another and eventually, after 100 people say no, one person will say yes.

Challenges
The challenges Crane faced came in three different forms. One of which was physical challenges pertaining to climbing. He says, “When your back is sore and your shoulders are aching, and you are carrying literally 150 pounds of gear, those are the times I just had to buck up and say ‘okay, I can do this,’ literally one foot in front of another. I’d put in my ear buds, turn my iPod on and just get into a rhythm.”

The second set of challenges would be with the charitable giving side. He discovered that he was not the best fundraiser and believes he wouldn’t have been able to do this project if he wasn’t so passionate about suicide prevention and the Trevor Project, the number one suicide prevention project in the US. It was tough to constantly push himself to talk about it; talk about the pain of a loved one passing away due to suicide. Forcing himself to talk to strangers was a challenge in itself, yet he believes that it really added to his entire experience and helped the project immensely.

The third challenge was personal, because he spent a long time in different locations by himself. He managed to cope with this by realizing who his true friends and family were. He figured this out by realizing who he could literally call up at any hour, any time zone and have lengthy converstations with. Once he was able to discover who these people were it really helped him to cope with being alone in various locations around the world.

The Rainbow Summits Project
The Rainbow Summits Project is a combination of two of Cason’s passions; his desire to help suicide prevention and his love for mountaineering. The idea was that he would climb the seven summits (the highest mountain on each continent) using that as a platform to raise money and awareness for the Trevor Project (suicide prevention program supporting LGBTQ youth.) He started in February 2012 and climbed the seven summits. For the last year and a half, he has been going around talking to schools, groups, talking in seminars to promote awareness for the Rainbow Summits project.

The Rainbow Summits Project is geared towards suicide prevention for not only the LGTBQ society but any one who is in need of help. It also helps the LGTBQ presence in athletics, which in a very encouraging fashion has been expanding over the years. For example, in Calgary there is an LGTBQ speed skater training for the Olympics who is openly gay, along with many others. This is very encouraging for young LGTBQ youth who need athletic role models and inspiration, and also helps youth be open and confident about who they truly are.

Outcomes of the project
Crane is achieving his goals of awareness raising and fundraising. He also feels as though he has gained a lot of knowledge and has been able to experience so much in such a short amount of time.

Ending remarks by Cason Crane:
“Young people can make changes in their communities, there are resources there even if it might seem as if there isn’t any. By being creative and thinking outside of the box I think people can discover that there is more resources than they think and if they find an issue they are passionate about they shouldn’t let anyone change that, they should be stepping up and taking charge, if we all do that as youth, as awesome youth, we are going to live in a much better world then the one given to us by the previous generation.”

Reasons why music is amazing

0

Anybody who knows me know that I love music. People find my love for music a bit obsessive and odd, But I have good  reason to be obsessed, and here are some reasons why:

Relatable

musicheart

One thing about music is that you can listen to it no matter how you are feeling. There are songs for every situation, whether you are flying high or feeling low. You might need some inspiration or motivation, or maybe you need something to help you tune out the world. There is a song for every emotion. Music is there to remind you that no matter where you are, or what you are feeling, you are not alone.

Individuality

Sometimes people feel like nobody notices them, like they are invisible. Which is why music is great. Music helps people to express themselves. Whether you are listening to music, or making it, everyone’s taste in music is different, and everyone has different songs that relate to them. So even though you and your friend may have the same favourite song, you guys still have different likes and dislikes. And that’s part of the reason why everyone is so different.

Escape

Everyone can feel like the world is too much to handle, and music can help with that. Sometimes, putting in your earbuds can be enough to help forget what was bothering you. Whether you are singing at the top of your lungs, or simply bobbing your head, music always helps you take your mind off things.

Focus

I listen to music while I study, and I listen in class if the teacher allows it. Why? Because the music helps me focus. It sets a beat and a tempo to work to. I don’t like silence where I can hear a pin drop. I would rather fill my world with sound.

tumblr_li23ntMMIG1qhzzcpo1_500 Therapy

When I feel depressed or sad, I always rely on music to lift my mood a little bit. A lot of people who have gone through emotional traumatic stress (such as; death of a family member, cutting, depression, etc.) say that music helped them heal and help them return to a happier state of being.

Music helps people feel less alone and helps people deal with things that are bothering them.

The top 7 speeches of the 20th century

Throughout history, the human race has progressed drastically. Our leaders, important figures for our progression, have often facilitated this societal progress through speeches, where they explain to society how how to make this progress. Some of these speeches may be relatively drab while others may make profound impacts on society and its progression. This list commemorates the best of speeches:

7. Franklin D Roosevelt

Franklin D Roosevelt, before being elected to the Presidency of the United States of America, was an optimistic, gentle and buoyant speaker, who rarely talked about what he might do if he was elected. In this drastically different speech, FDR discussed the nation’s “common difficulties” and convinced Americans of his wide and effective scope of work. – “Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself”

6. Frederick Douglass (Exception to the 20th century)

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a speech in acknowledgement of the Declaration of Independence. He was a black author and public figure support the abolitionist movement, which urged him to take this opportunity to address to his crowd issues that black face and how the freedom celebrated on the Declaration of Independence was not to be shared with the black people of America – “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro”

5. Adolf Hitler

Four days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Adolf Hitler formally declared war on America. He had previously promised to side with Japan against America, and the Pearl Harbor attack allowed him to do so. He felt that with a war against America, he would be able to divert focus on Europe and allow his conquest to continue. In this speech, he convinced Germans that the Americans had first waged war by meddling in their affairs and that the war was justified and morally correct.

4. Mahatma Gandhi

The “Quit India Speech” was presented by Mahtma Gandhi on August 8, 1942, on the eve of the inauguration of the Quit India movement. He called for determined but passive resistance that proved to be instrumental in the peaceful but effective Independence.
