How to get a job

What do you do when you can’t get a job? For most, this is a hard question to tackle and some turn to resumé gimmicks. Although lots of times these don’t work, sometimes they do hit well with bosses.

Most of the time, professional recruiters are trained to block out creative resumes and turn them down immediately. Senior recruiting manager Bobby Gormsen tells the Wall Street Journal that “[He’s] sort of immune to this stuff.” He looks for hard evidence that the person behind the resumé has had experience and training in the field rather than people who use tactics to attract attention. Sometimes, there are even machines that are sent through systems that rank resumes based on the number of keywords hit. In these circumstances, creative resumes don’t work anymore.

Sometimes, these resume gimmicks seem to attract a lot of attention and successfully land you a job. They certainly give the recruiters a break from all the traditional resumes and let you stand out. In addition, these types of resumes allow you to show your dedication because these require more time and energy than traditional resumes where you could just write one for 10 different jobs. Aleks Kamko spent six hours writing a script for a video that he filmed in the hallway of his dorm, and 18 hours editing it. This video landed him a job as a coveted internship at Facebook Inc.

Next to this college student, Adam Pacitti is also another user of resume gimmicks. He has sent out 250 resumes and received two rejections and no responses from the other 248. He decided to rent a billboard that says, “I spent my last £500 on this billboard. Please give me a job. Employadam.com.” He soon got job offers from all different sectors of the job market.
