Motivation 101- Follow Your Heart

We are at the brink of our teenage years and have to start making decisions that will lead into careers. This is a life changing decision, and sadly, many of us don’t know what to do. Many of us are motivated by the prospect of earning a good salary, while the rest are being pressured by others to enter a particular stream.

Does this ring a bell?

If you are in a situation like this, I want you to do something for me. It’s rather insubstantial, really. Sit at a quiet place, and breathe. Don’t concentrate on anything, but yourself and your breath. Feel the air cleansing your system of all impurities, terrible memories, expectations, that one quiz you didn’t do well in. Now think- what do you see yourself as? It can be anything- freelance photographer, traveler, chef, social worker, etc. That vision you see is what you truly want to do. It is untainted by the expectations of those around you.

follow-your-heart

The rest is dependent upon you- if you are courageous enough to chase your dream. There will be people along the way who will try to stop you and misguide you. Sometimes, those people are the ones who are very close to you and are the ones whom you trust with your life. Listen to yourself before listening to anyone else. Do what you really want to do. Because seventy years down the line, when you are on your deathbed, you shouldn’t regret not taking the untrodden path in fear of being rejected by the society.

dream

This pursuit will not be easy. You will have to persevere and work for it. But the end result will be worth it, trust me.

You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something? Go get it. Period.”

-Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness

The second issue rises- how will you make a lot of money? Just think about this- is life really all about the money you make? Try taking all the money to your grave. As said in a great movie, “Money is like the dirt in one’s palms. One day or the others, it is bound to get away. So why not spend it now?”. Tell me, how many excessively rich people are truly happy? They may surround themselves with expensive things, but inside their minds, there is a craving for something more to live for. It is more important to excel first, and you excel at what you really want to do.

pursie excellence

Look around you, there are small moments waiting to be explored. Don’t just be alive, but live. Live in the moment, for you may never know when that moment will be snatched away from you, never to be seen again. Follow your heart, and do what YOU want to do, not what others want you to do. It still isn’t late. We would be much happier as a society if everyone followed the desires of their heart rather than societal obligations and/or monetary gains.

life

This reminds me of a beautiful poem I had come across. This is a rough translation, as the original poem, from the movie ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'(You Don’t Get to Live Life a Second Time), is called ‘Toh Zinda Ho Tum'(You’re Living)-

“If you carry eagerness/restlessness in your heart, then you are living
If you are moving forward with the fire(passion) of your dreams in your eyes, then you are living
Learn to flow freely like the wind
Learn to flow like a river(Go with the flow)
Meet every new moment with open arms
Let your eyes see new moments every day
If you carry wonder in your heart, then you’re living
If you carry eagerness in your heart, then you are living”

5 annoying types of people on social media

0

In a world where social media brings people together, doing certain things online can bring you a lot of hate. Avoid doing any of the following actions:

  1. Photoshop Mania

It gets really annoying when you keep seeing selfie spams of one person especially if the photos are not original. Don’t photoshop or filter your photos in weird colours; be confident about your raw pictures.

Photoshop fails

  1. Grammar Terrorist

While it’s not really necessary to do punctuations or capitalization in statuses, spelling a lot of words wrong rather makes you seem like you’re undereducated. These are seen by the public, you should present yourself decently.

  1. Grammar Police

There are certain people who try to stop grammar terrorists by correcting them on every mistake they make. Even though it’s annoying to see too many mistakes, it’s even more annoying to see comments filling up with corrections. Mistakes are mistakes; everyone should understand that. It’s unnecessary to point them out.

4. Depressing Status Updates

Having depression is a serious problem, but posting negative statuses constantly is unnecessary. Social media should not be where people rely on to solve their depression. It also could potentially provoke cyber bullying.

5. Attention Seekers

These are people who put themselves down to receive compliments. According to them, other people are obligated to tell them that they are pretty, or they’re smart, etc. Everyone should be confident about themselves and if the only motivation to post something that shows low self-esteem is to receive compliments, then don’t do it.

Dear Me…

0

So I saw a lot of these posts going around the interwebs, and I thought I would contribute. I may only be 17, but my pre-adolescent days had enough moments to cringe over, so here we go – a letter to my 12 year old self.

writing

Dear Me,

Uh, hi. It’s you, from the future. I’m still a pretty horrible role model and not as fiscally responsible as you’d like me to be. It’s been 5  years now, and a lot has changed. First and foremost, do not touch your eyebrows. This may seem vain, but I swear to you the mid 2000s will be an era full of luscious caterpillars.

Secondly, I know you’re really worried about making friends and looking pretty. Don’t sweat it! Take it from me, so long as you cut back on the gossip and remain loyal to your friends and family, you’ll do fine. As for the pretty thing – you grow out of that awkward phase of “I wore glasses and had bangs; both of which did not suit my face”. Now it sucks to say that when you get older, you’ll be faced with a lot of unfair stuff. Things like getting yelled at in the street, unwanted attention, and you’ll be hearing the phrase “boys will be boys” quite a bit. I’m sorry I couldn’t do much to change this for you, but I’m working on it.

You should also know that future you will be jealous of future 12 year olds. They never went through the “light wash flared jeans” phase (accompanied by your favourite too-short-at-the-sleeves velvet Hilary Duff shirt) – they went straight to pretty. If I could make them do their time in puberty jail I would, trust me.

One last thing. You may think that the worst habit you have is gossiping and being so unbelievably messy – its not. Your worst habit now and in the future will be comparing yourself to other people and endlessly seeking validation from them. Trust me when I say, you don’t need to. You have a few flaws and that’s fine! But know that you are you, and there’s only one of you, and that’s great! You don’t need to seek love and acceptance from other people (aka that one boy in middle school who had the personality of an Adidas sandal. You know who I’m talking about), and trust me, it gets so much easier when you get older to love yourself – flaws and all.

PS: I already know how you’ll end up – hi, I’m future you.

PPS: You’ll be fine.

Youth of YYC: Anjali, 18

“My biggest passion is helping people. When I was little, I went to India and saw a bunch of the poverty and hurt there. There were people living inside sewers who relied on selling the metal they found for their next meal. Living here, we are so privileged and we don’t see what’s right outside our doors and going on all around the world. Even in the media, they only tend to show the good side of developing countries. My biggest goal is to help abolish human trafficking and rehabilitate children that are unfortunately caught up in oppressive situations.”

Little projects to help you capture your year

Projects to help you capture your year

{Original Image}

Even though it’s already March, it’s not too late to start on a few little projects to help you capture your year. (You can also tuck these ideas away for next year if you would like to actually start them on the first day of the year.) If you are someone who has a terrible memory, such as myself, then you most likely only remember a handful of very significant events from each year. Sometimes, even the events that should be highly memorable tend you escape you. Well, fret no more! Today, I have compiled a few little year-round projects to help you capture the highs (and the lows) of this magical journey known as life.

{The Gratitude Jar}

Before we get started, yes, I understand that my “jar” is not actually a jar. I didn’t have any jars lying around, but I did have this cylindrical box leftover from Christmas. I also happened to have some gold paper lying around, so I thought I would craft up a special container for my daily notes.

IMG_0803

What I like about this interpretation is the fact that I can fit cue cards into this box, rather than limiting myself to tiny pieces of paper (as well all know how I like to ramble).

IMG_0805

The main focus is to just capture the moments of each day that you are grateful for. You don’t have to write something down every day, especially if you had a bad day. I’m not saying that we should all ignore the rough moments, but sometimes we just have to appreciate the little things. It’s by focussing on the good that we can have a positive attitude. Although it is good to be able to accept the bad in life, you will end up miserable if you can only see what’s wrong in the world.

{Q&A a Day}

IMG_0800

IMG_0802

I got this book in January of 2014, but around some time in June I just stopped writing in it for whatever reason. I picked it up again recently and I must say that it is a great way to take a step back from the stresses of your life for a few minutes a day. Each day, the book provides you with a prompt, such as “What are you chasing at this moment?” Some of the questions are profound like the ones seen below, but other topics are a bit quirkier, such as, “List three foods you ate today.”

IMG_0801

Looking back at the answers I put down last year and comparing them to what I’m saying this year is really interesting. In just one year, I’ve changed in the slightest ways. There are some questions where I lamely wrote down the same response, but there are others where my answer was completely different. I’m excited to see what the me of five years in the future is going to think about all these questions.

{The Motivation Jar}

There are a different variety of approaches to this jar project, but the idea behind it is that you write down (or print out) a quote for each day of the year on a small piece of paper. If you decide to go for the traditional jar idea, you roll it up into a little scroll and pop them into the jar. Then, you pick out a piece of paper every morning to give yourself a little bit of inspiration/motivation/positivity for the day! If you are interested in the motivation jar idea, I would suggest starting now and getting your jar made well in advance so that you can enjoy it next year.

6a00d8341c64e753ef0148c734268e970c

{Original Image}

I’ll have to admit, this idea would work better as a gift than something for yourself. There is nothing wrong with making yourself a jar, but I feel like having to read all the quotes and then make sure you have no duplicates or spelling mistakes would just take away the feel of it. Although, if you’re not completely neurotic like me, none of that would really matter to you and you’ll get a great jar! (The gift concept is still something to think about, though.)

{Project 365}

The app that I originally used is called Project 365, but I discovered a new app, Collect, that I like more (for no reason other than the font and layout, yes, read above: neurotic). Both of these apps are available in the Apple App Store so I’m not sure if they’re available on other operating systems, but I am sure that you can find alternatives.

IMG_0811

The idea behind this project is simple, you take a photo every day of the year. You can add a caption, or a mini diary entry, if you so choose.

IMG_0810

With Collect, you can view your pictures in both a calendar and grid orientation. (I don’t have too many photos as of right now because I just started this project myself.)

IMG_0806

IMG_0809

If you tap the small rotating arrows in the bottom right corner, you can see any comments that you make about each of your amazing days.

IMG_0807

IMG_0808

There are a lot of different functions on this app for you to explore yourself. The best part of the app is the fact that it’s free!

So, there you have it. Four little projects to help you capture and enhance your year. You don’t have to undertake all of them (as that can become a little overwhelming) but trying one or two may unexpectedly brighten up 2015!

Superhero Time!

I have been closely following news on superheroes and superhero movies for quite a while, so here goes:

Jared Leto to Joker- the Transformation

jared

Recently, Jared Leto cut his hair short and dyed it platinum blonde. Finally we get to see Joker resurface after almost a 7 year hiatus. Personally, I’m very pumped for all the movies lined up to build the DC Universe- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, etc. The excitement is building up, people!

Aquaman- What a Beast!

jason momoa

Some time back, a picture of Aquaman was tweeted out by director Zack Snyder. I wont lie, I was a little disappointed by the lack of Aquaman’s glorious golden mane. But nevertheless, he looks like he could kick some bad guy butt. Jason Momoa, hats off. You are a stunner.

“Unite the Seven”

The overlay could suggest two things- unite the seven seas, or unite the even members of JLA- Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Cyborg, and the last but not the lest, Aquaman. I’m so excited to see the DC Universe materializing!

jla

Avengers: Age of Ultron

age of ultron

A new trailer was out some time back, and if you haven’t checked it out already, I highly recommend that you do. It has been confirmed that Ultron is indeed a creation of Tony Stark who goes haywire and is bent into destroying the world. Will out heroes overcome the evil that escalates by the minute?

 Supergirl’s TV Debut

supergirl-melissa-benoist-full-body-1593x3000

Melissa Benoist stars as the titular character in CBS’s ‘Supergirl’. I am so excited about this show! Finally we see a female superhero come to the screen after Lynda Carter’s ‘Wonder Woman'(1975-79). Melissa’s look is reminiscent of the Supergirl comics, and it’s so nostalgic to see it being brought to live action.

That’s all I have in terms of news about superhero movies! Let me know if I missed anything. Reach out to me on Facebook and Twitter, the links are below!

Inspiring Women of Science and Technology

In a realm that is still presumptuously led by males, the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), has showcased the power and potential of women in their respective positions. To commemorate International Women’s Day, let us explore some of the most significant female figures who carved the path of present day science.

1. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958): Often overshadowed by male scientists, Franklin made vast advancements in x-ray crystallography, leading to the understanding of DNA structure, as revealed by scientists, such as, James Watson and Francis Crick.

2. Marie Curie (1867-1934): The first woman to win the Nobel Prize, Curie honed in her technique to discover polonium and radium. Curie made a name for herself as not only a collaborator with her husband, Pierre Curie, but as a woman renowned for the theory of radioactivity and beyond in the field of chemistry.

3. Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997): Wu was a leading physicist and Noble Prize winner, who worked on the Manhattan Project. Her most famous works, include the Wu Experiment that disproved the Law of Conservation of Parity. For her extensive contributions to the science community, Wu is most commonly known as, “The First Lady of Physics”.

4. Hypatia (350AD-415AD): A Greek mathematician, astronomer and philosopher in Egypt who delved into education and teaching. As opposed to dressing like a woman in that time, Hypatia dressed in scholarly garbs. An attack against Hypatia for her pagan beliefs, forced her students to flee to Athens. Although there is a minute record of Hypatia’s works, her legacy lived on through the impacts that her students made with the thriving of her political and mathematical theories.

5. Roberta Bondar (1945- ): The first female Canadian astronaut, Bondar is the epitome of the realization of shooting for the stars. Among her list of accomplishments, is a neuroscience degree, which allowed her to make groundbreaking understandings in space medicine and be the first astronaut-neurologist.

#TheDress has turned into a domestic violence campaign

0

#TheDress

{Original Image}

A week ago, the internet exploded when #TheDress appeared on the internet. Science has explained why people see so many different colours (personally, I see white and gold, and have not been able to see any other colours), but the buzz has not simmered down. Nonetheless, no matter what colour you think #TheDress is, you should now be turning your attention to this viral ad campaign started by the Salvation Army in South Africa.

B_aDZyvWAAA2ZtT.jpg-large

{Original Image}

“Why is it so hard to see black and blue,” the captivating image asks. And below, “The only illusion is if you think it was her choice. One in six women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women.” For those of you who haven’t been following at home, the original dress that started the controversy is in fact blue and black. (You can see the owner of #TheDress on Ellen.)

B_baHIqWcAAK7vD.jpg-large

{Original Image}

The answer to the previous question is, “Because they cover it with white and gold.”  The point of this campaign is to try and stop abuse against women, but more so to try and make it easier for victims to report any type of abuse. Even though the campaign started in South Africa, domestic abuse is also relevant in Canada, and all over the world. “In 2010, victims of family violence made up a quarter of all victims of violence crime; half were spouses.” – Global News

This ad campaign was very clever, in that it got people’s attention by using a viral subject but also in that it turned a silly dress into something so powerful. The timing was also perfect, being released just before International Women’s Day on March 8th. “Make It Happen” is the theme of Women’s Day this year, challenging the world to step up and take action. We don’t need to wait for a single year each day to try and make a difference. The power to change the world lies in your hands every single day. It’s up to you to decide what to do with that power.

(P.S. I understand that women are not the only targets of abuse. Domestic abuse comes in all shapes and sizes, and the suffering of a person cannot be confined by the person’s gender. However, the majority of domestic abuse cases happen to be ones where a woman is being abused by a man. Campaigns like these are surely aware of that fact. It is up to us as a society to try to prevent suffering and mistreatment for everyone.)

Mission: Prom

It is that time of the year! Graduation season is right around the corner, but you are stressed! It is the first time you would be attending prom, so how to get ready for it? Well, worry not, my (in)experience comes in handy!

Time to Prom: 1 Week

Start your skincare routine. Try to avoid junk foods, sodas, or anything that could make your face look puffy. Hydrate a whole lot, and load up on fruits and veggies to give off a healthy glow on your D-Day.

Closeup of a charming young girl holding her face with hands

Try on you outfit, with makeup and your chosen hairstyle. Now is the time to get any last minute alterations done if required. Decide on a look, and take pictures of it to reference to when you’re actually putting on your makeup/getting it done professionally.

try on

Time to Prom: 2-3 Days

If you have made any appointments, call in to check with them. Confirm the time at which you have your appointments and ensure that you can be there on time. Beauty salons tend to be busy this season, so make sure you have made your appointments in advance.

appointment

Time to Prom: 0 Days

Make a schedule! As strange as that sounds, it is important you time everything out perfectly. There are so many things to be done! Makeup, hair, photos!  Hopefully, you don’t want to be running around chaotically because you are late and your makeup is still incomplete. Choose a spot for taking pictures. It can be a nearby park, your community garden, or in the highway outside the city. Make sure you and your friends (and/or date) have agreed on the location. Here is a list of photography spots in and around Calgary for some inspiration!

photoshoot

For my ladies, stash some extra supplies in your clutch/purse/bag/anything you are planning to carry around throughout the evening. Things like safety pins, bobby pins, lip balm, aspirin, etc come in handy whenever you (or another female compatriot) may need.

(For some extra fun, you can document your and your friends’ ‘transformation’ process. I know I’ll try doing that!)

Well there you go! Five easy steps and you’re ready for prom! Just a small tip before I sign off- ensure you have your dress and shoes ready to go. It’s not advisable to shop for them last minute.

But more important than having the “perfect” prom, you should have fun. It is the last major event of your high school career, so make it memorable. Take pictures, dance, and have a lot of fun!

Joke of the Post: Why bother having a date when you can have ‘dates’.

My Favourite YouTube EDU Channels

YouTube is undeniably a great source of entertainment, but it is also equally packed with all sorts of educational materials. As a student and as an insatiably curious person in general, I spend a lot of time doing research and attempting to find resources that allow me to better understand my work and the world around me. These are a few of the channels I most often find myself turning to for help or just to satisfy me need to cram my brain with as much information as possible.

Crash Course

crash-course2Crash Course, hosted primarily by author John Green and his brother Hank, is a great channel to find information about a wide variety of subjects. From Biology, to Literature, to World History, Crash Course offers easy to follow, incredibly entertaining videos that are bound to be helpful. For the full lowdown on Crash Course, check out Richard’s post all about it here.

asapSCIENCE

Run by fellow Canadians Mitchell Moffit and Gregory Brown, asapSCIENCE offers short, concise and equally entertaining videos debunking scientific myths and answering your most pressing questions. What’s cooler is that most all of their videos are done using whiteboards with constantly changing visuals to enrich the experience. Although not particularly useful for your studies (for the most part), asapSCIENCE is a great way to learn about something you may be interested in without having to go through a million web pages. If you like their videos, check out their second channel, asapTHOUGHT.

MinutePhysics

Somewhat like the previous channel, MinutePhysics offers short and to-the-point clips, however, they are more useful for school. Created by Henry Reich, this channel is great for not only passing time learning about really cool science, but for creating a deeper understanding of the world around us.

Bozeman Sciencebozeman sci

The least “professional” of all of these channels, Bozeman Science is run by science teacher Paul Andersen out of, you guessed it, Bozeman, Montana. Sorted into playlists tailored to AP Biology, Chemistry and Physics and several other smaller subjects, this channel has been my saving grace on multiple occasions. Andersen’s easy to follow podcasts complement the Alberta high school sciences curricula quite nicely and are great for enriching classroom learning.

wisecrackWisecrack

Formerly just Thug Notes, Wisecrack is a slightly vulgar yet still amazing source of information surrounding specifically literature, philosophy, cinema and pop culture. Laugh-out-loud commentary does nothing but make the experience of learning even more relatable and engaging. Their videos are great pick-me-ups if you’re having a tough time understanding anything from To Kill a Mockingbird to Othello.

10 Myths About Self-Harm

tumblr_mc4c6luAtY1r8dar5o1_1280The scary truth is… these days, seeing someone in class or in the hallway with scars on their arm is no longer a rare thing. Each individual that I see with self-harm scars hits my heart, because I know they must be struggling deeply inside. Everyone experiences struggles in different ways, and everyone acts upon them differently, and unfortunately many people (particularly youth) are turning to self-harm. Even though the issue is not as unknown as it used to be, there are way too many misconceptions and assumptions made, and so I hope maybe I can break a few of these for you.

This post is part a series I’m doing on myths around mental health. If you’d like to read others, check out this post.

PLEASE: Self-harm is NOT okay. If you or someone you know is suffering, letting a mature adult know and getting help is imperative.

Please note: I left many statements vague because I don’t want to trigger anyone who does self-harm, or “inspire” anyone to use self-harm as a strategy.

1) MYTH: Self-harm is nothing more than attention-seeking

TRUTH: Let me be clear here, self-harm may in some cases be used as a conscious OR non-conscious cry for help. Since those who self-harm are often struggling inside, this can be their way of externalizing it and making it a visible problem. However, whether or not people self-harm to let others know how they are feeling, they are doing so because of internal pain.

2) MYTH: Self-harm always means cutting

TRUTH: Self harming means intentionally hurting oneself. Though the usual image of this behaviour is lines across people’s wrists, there are other ways in which people harm themselves. I don’t want to give anyone “new ideas” of how to harm themselves, so I’ll keep this to a general statement: just because somebody doesn’t cut themselves in the “traditional” way, doesn’t mean they aren’t suffering with self-harm behaviours. Therefore, checking for scarred lines on someone’s wrist does not always answer the question of whether or not someone is resorting to self-harm.

3) MYTH: When people self harm, it means they are suicidal

TRUTH: Many, many of those who resort to self-harm are questioning their existence and possibly seeking a way out. That being said, assumptions shouldn’t be made. Many others may still aspire to live and keep going, but they “need” self-harm to persevere through the moment or to bring them a certain feeling. Although the topic is often seen as taboo, the best option in dealing with this is to ask, because no one likes assumptions being made about them. If somebody IS suicidal, IMMEDIATE attention is necessary.

4) MYTH: If someone continues to self-harm after receiving help, they must not want to get better

TRUTH: Recovery from self-harm isn’t as simple as being told it’s the wrong thing to do. Everyone that self harms has a purpose behind it, and if that purpose is still affecting them, then it can be very difficult for the outcome to be changed. Continued treatment does help, but it takes time. A common term in the recovery process is “relapse”. Sometimes things are more difficult, but for those struggling and those who know someone struggling, it’s important to know that a slip-up doesn’t mean a give-up.

5) MYTH: Self-harm is the biggest part of someone’s struggle

TRUTH: Generally speaking, behaviours don’t just happen. Behaviours are influence by a) thoughts and b) emotions, which are both also influenced by events. No one in a good mind state is going to take a blade to their arm. Self-harm is the surface of an iceberg, underneath which lies mental, social, and emotional struggles. Even though self-harm is not a healthy behaviour, people do it for a reason, and it’s that reason that is the root of the behaviour.

6) MYTH: People always try to keep their cuts (etc.) hidden

TRUTH: Long sleeves, hoodies, bracelets: many teens will go to extensive lengths to hide what they are doing to themselves. That being said, everyone’s experience is different, and so if someone isn’t carefully hiding their scars, that is NOT a reason to think they aren’t truly struggling. Such a behaviour could mean they are desperate for help, and that is NOT the same as simply wanting attention.

7) MYTH: If a friend or someone else close to you self-harms, it must be your fault

TRUTH: I’m not going to deny that social situations and family situations often contribute to a person’s inner struggle that could lead them to behaviours like self-harm. However, to make somebody feel the need to make themselves experience intense pain, you’d have to have really pushed them over the edge, i.e. actively bullying or belittling or betraying (etc.) the person. The most important part is that you try to be part of the solution, not the problem.

8) MYTH: Everyone who self-harms knows the detriment of their behaviour OR No one who self-harms knows the detriment of their behaviour

TRUTH: These polar opposites are similar in the fact that an assumption is being made about the behaviour of someone and their thought processes behind it. On the one hand, sometimes youth can see how common self-harm has become, and think it is a normal or acceptable thing to do. The truth is, whether it is the intention or not, these behaviours are life threatening and can have a lasting impact mentally, emotionally, and of course physically. On the other hand, it is sometimes thought that if people knew the truth about what they were doing, they wouldn’t do it. Well guess what? Many people who have been through therapy and have learned and learned and learned why they need to stop still continue. When intense underlying struggles lead to such a behaviour, the consequences of it might seem insignificant.

9) MYTH: The best way to help is to keep silent and obey your friend when they say “please don’t tell my parents/a counsellor”

TRUTH: When your friend is in the hospital or you’re at their funeral, you’re not going to be thankful that you kept their secret. Coming out about self-harm behaviours is difficult, because it means it’s going to be put into the spotlight and addressed. But guess what? Without that, things probably won’t just “work out” themselves. Recovery often means things getting really hard and really uncomfortable before things get better. I’d rather have a friend who temporarily hates me than a friend who is dead or permanently injured.

10) MYTH: If someone doesn’t self harm, their struggles must be less intense

TRUTH: This is a biggie, ok? As I’ve said, everyone’s experiences and struggles manifest in different ways. Self-harm (or being suicidal, for that matter) are not a sufficient measure of whether or not somebody is struggling. Some people hold it in, some people scream, some people run away, some people resort to disordered eating, some people exercise, some people journal, some people isolate. The point is, everyone’s struggle looks different, and somebody could be much deeper into their struggles and not self-harm, whereas somebody who just had a bad day and wants some “relief” could resort to self-harm. Some people seek self-harm to “help” them, others don’t. Neither situation can determine the extent of someone’s struggle. Again, just don’t make assumptions.
