I never really knew what to expect from Grade 10 until I experienced it. But, looking back at the memories made in 9 months, I’m surprised about where I ended up versus in where I started. I was a nervous 14-year-old intimidated by my peers and the unknown classrooms. Now, I see students I pass in the hallway as my equal because we’re all trying to figure this high school thing out. But instead of just talking about it, why don’t I show you? Twitter played a huge role when it came to venting about procrastinated work or sharing big accomplishments. I can’t emphasize how much I’ve used it this year to talk about all sorts of topics relevant to students like us.
Curious about what I tweet? Then let’s go on a journey…
High school had a rocky start…
…and with the new environment, everyone was feeling the pressure.
Sometimes the classes were easy…
…but sometimes, they were definitely not.
And sometimes, you just want to give up.
You’ll meet great friends…
…and procrastination will be one of them.
You’ll want to retreat…
…because everything gets so overwhelming…
…but you know what? That’s okay.
Things get better…
…and you’ll find the things you love to do.
When you find your niche, high school isn’t so bad.
Your hard work does not go unrecognized.
Before you know it, your first year of high school has passed…
…and you’re ready to do it all over again come September.
I hope you enjoyed my spin on my first year of high school! These tweets of mine are genuine and I’m glad I was able to document them to make this post possible. I would not trade everything I experienced for anything. If you finished Grade 10 or are about to start high school, what were your highlights or what do you plan to accomplish?
“I am fated to journey hand in hand with my strange heroes and to survey the surging immensity of life, to survey it through the laughter that all can see and through the tears unseen and unknown by anyone.” – Nikolai Gogol
End of the year, always a very sad sort of occasion as our friends graduate or move schools. However, we are not out of time and in fact, despite the limited amount of time we seem to have, you’re never too busy to squeeze in some of these enjoyable things:
1. Go for a jog/bike/walk
Summer is a great time to really appreciate what nature has to offer and get out of the basement and away from screens for a bit. So take 5-10 minutes to walk around the block or give your dog a stretch!
Maybe not quite like that but you get the point.
2. Catch a movie
It’s a bit more time consuming but if the clouds are out and you don’t feel like being, head down to the cheap theaters for a break!
3. Read a book
Seems like forever since you last did, eh? I know times get busy but if you’re like me, simply planning out when you want to finish the book by and scheduling the amount you have to read to achieve that goal puts it within reach. Discover or rediscover a new world!
4. Have some lemonade!
Not that difficult to make, and can be super relaxing during this time of year. Click here for an awesome recipe to make your own!
5. Take a nap
Yup. Sleeping is awesome and can be super refreshing if you’re trying to break up studying. So go for it. Set an alarm, close the curtains and take a snooze; give your mind the vacation it deserves.
Have a cat nap.
6. Do some gardening!
The sun is out, flowers are beginning to come into bloom. Whether you live in an apartment or an acreage, there’s many different things you can do. If you’re tight on space, grab a plastic flowerpot from the dollar store or even a disposable coffee cup and some soil and some seeds. If you have more space, you can go into your backyard and plant, bringing some more colour to the environment 🙂
7. Have a spontaneous dance party
Socks + hardwood/slippery tile = a lot of fun. Turn up the music and just let your inner interpretive dancer come out! It’s fun although no one will be able to admire your skill (or in my case, lack thereof).
If it’s your first time I’d recommend anything from T Swift to Selena Gomez to Tinashe to The Weeknd. Just choose a tune, blast it loud and go for it!
8. Have a BBQ
If you don’t have one at your home, you can always go down to Fish Creek park or Elbow River to use theirs. Grab some marshmallows, chocolate and hot dogs and you’re set for an awesome evening! Invite your family and friends to enjoy the time together. Interesting recipe idea for a new twist on s’mores: Take store bought waffle ice cream cones and fill with chocolate chips and pieces of banana or strawberries (I like to add mini marshmallows) and wrap in tin foil. You can put the tin foiled cones on the BBQ or in the embers of the fire to melt the chocolate inside.
9. Karaoke
Break out the falsetto in the shower and just enjoy the incredible talent that you know you possess. Another fun idea is playing a game such as Jenga where the loser has to perform for everyone else (personally seen this in class before and would highly recommend).
10. Do some yoga
If craziness isn’t really your thing than this is perfect for you! Grab your computer and just some space and get in touch with yourself in a quiet and relaxing way. Yoga also helps you sleep at night and doing yoga before an exam is proven to help improve your scores! Click here for night time yoga video (only 10 minutes).

You’ve probably seen them dressed up in their fancy attire, brandishing their baton, and waving their arms around dramatically. What is a conductor’s purpose though? The purpose of a conductor is to stand in front of the ensemble and communicate to them through arm gestures and facial expressions.
While most people have seen a conductor at some point of their lives, I feel like only a small handful of people can say that they’ve done the conducting themselves. I am grateful that I had that special opportunity to be a student conductor for my high school band at our recent spring concert. I’ll be going through what that experience was like and hopefully you leave with a better appreciation for what conductors do, even if you’re not musically inclined.
I was introduced to music in Grade 7 and my interest in conducting followed sometime after that. I was captivated by the fluid motions that my music teacher would make and I set off by myself to learn what they meant.
The Basics (Right Hand)
The right hand is mainly responsible for keeping the time and make sure everyone is playing at the same speed. The most common pattern is 4/4. This is a called a time signature, which means that the numerator (the top of the fraction) denotes how many beats there are per measure, while the denominator (the bottom of the fraction) tells which kind of equals one beat. In this case, there are 4 beats per measure and each quarter note is one beat. How would this be shown?
Well, the right hand would repeat the pattern below. The beats are made by a gentle flick of the wrist while following the pattern.
These basic patterns can be adjusted to match the intended effect of the music. For example, conducting these patterns with broad strokes would indicate that the music should be powerful and strong. Also consider how conducting these patterns in a rounded, fluid manner would compare to conducting them with sharp flicks of the wrist. The former would show that the music should be smooth, flowing and continuous while the latter would show that the music should be short and detached.
The Basics (Left Hand)
The left hand is mainly responsible for cuing entrances and cut-offs. Although the left hand can just mirror the right hand patterns above, it should also move independently as it has a distinct role to play too. An entrance would be cued by making good eye contact with the musicians, holding up the left hand to hold their attention, and then moving it when they’re supposed to play. Similarly, the gesture for a cut-off is starting with the left hand palm-up and turning it palm-down while pinching your your pointer and thumb together. This tells the musicians to stop playing.
The left hand also controls the dynamics – how loud or soft the music is supposed to be. If the music is supposed to crescendo (get louder), then the conductor would show that by holding their left hand palm-up and slowly raising it. For a decrescendo (get softer), the conductor would do the opposite and have their left hand palm-down and slowly lowering it.
The Score
A score shows all of the individual parts of the music together and is what the conductor must base their conducting off of. I like to think of a score as a cooking recipe: it shows all the ingredients that you need, how much you need, and when to blend the ingredients. Two chefs may be given the same recipe but still result in unique dishes. The same goes for a music conductor. The score tells the conductor how the pieces should sound and how fast it should be, but the same piece can sound different under different conductors. The conductor follows the score, but also adds their own flair and interpretation.
The score that I had to study, with lots of pencil marks for personal notes
A conductor requires not only a thorough understanding of the score but also a clear idea how they want the music to sound. While a musician just has to know their own individual part in the music, the conductor must know how all those parts go together. By far the most challenging part of my conducting experience was interpretation. I had to make decisions about how I wanted the music to sound like. For the first few rehearsals, I found this to be quite difficult. So much was coming at me at once that it was hard to pick out individual parts and say “play more like this.”
What I use: a 14-inch rosewood handle baton
However, with my teacher’s help and many rehearsals later, I found that I was now able to confidently make decisions about how I wanted the music to sound. For me, that was a powerful moment because that’s when I really felt I had become a conductor. I may know the technical aspect of conducting – knowing all of the different gestures and motions – but the real conducting comes from stepping up to the plate (the podium in this case) and making decisions. I’m certainly still learning, but I feel like I’ve grown a lot through this experience.
Video!
I’m sure you’ve been waiting for this the whole article, but here’s a video of me actually conducting at my spring concert. The piece is “When the Spring Rain Begins to Fall” by Randall D. Standridge.
The composer describes the piece as: “My moods are incredibly affected by the weather. I love those moments in spring when you smell the rain and see the dark clouds on the horizon, heralding life, not death. Every spring is an affirmation of the possibilities that life has in store for us all, and the potential joy that lies in wait. These emotions on one rainy afternoon inspired the piece that became When the Spring Rain Begins to Fall.”
It’s the culmination of several months of hard work and practice from everyone. I’m extremely grateful that my teacher gave me this opportunity and I’m so proud of the music I was able to create with my fellow students. I plan on conducting another piece next year and I look forward to that.
This is just an brief overview of what conducting is, so if there’s anything you’re still curious about, I’d be more than happy to answer.
I admit I never have time to listen to music but when I do, I want to hear what I missed all at once. I always listen to the latest albums of my favourite artists. If you’re like me or you want to get into the world of music, I’ve compiled a list of albums form a range of genres I feel could help:
If you’re into R&B, I would definitely recommend giving this album a shot. And what better way to start than with Ne-Yo? He’s definitely one of the best artists in this genre and this album is definitely worth giving a try if you’re a fan of R&B or wanting to see what it’s like.
Personally, I wasn’t really into pop/alternative, which is the genre of this album. But after listening to Mikky Ekko on Rihanna’s song ‘Stay’, I fell in love with his voice. That was what motivated me to consider listening to this album and it’s truly a reflection of his voice on ‘Stay’. This is really a great album to explore the world of pop/alternative and Mikky Ekko’s wonderful voice with.
When I want to listen to rock, this is personally a really great album for me. Everyone loves Imagine Dragons! And this album is just as great as all their other works.
Exploring the music world, Hip Hop is one of the genres you’re more likely to not hate. Big Sean is one of the best known artists in this genre and his albums are rarely a disappointment.
Personally, rap is my favourite form of music to listen to. This may not be the same for everyone but this album by Kendrick has enough of some other genres incorporated into it that both the hardcore rap fans like myself and non rap fans can enjoy it.
I got really into country about last year when I moved to Canada. I never really listened to country before and when I started, I definitely felt like I had missed out. I started with Luke Bryan last year and he brought me into the country world. I think he could do the same for you!
These are some of the albums that have put me through those bad grades at school and have helped me get those As in the crucial finals. Even in non school situations, when I’m simply bored at home or looking for some entertainment to get through the cleaning hours. I hope this gives you a range of albums to explore the music world with and more importantly, that you enjoy ! 🙂
See this post for an introduction to this series, and this post for last week’s 5 Happy Things! This week is 5/5 and so maybe that’s an additional happy thing 🙂
Mesmerizing patterns in nature
Laser tag!!!
Exploring antique shops
Very photo-worthy flowers
Board/Card games! (with best friends of course)
Now ask yourself: what are you looking forward to in the next few weeks?
Starting next week, the old Mount Royal Conservatory will be busy with traffic as they begin to move their facilities into the new Conservatory. For non-classical musicians, that may not be the most riveting news. However, with the induction of a facility to practice music in, the Conservatory has introduced new education programs for those interested in popular music! Courses such as songwriting, rock bands and orchestra, as well as popular music history and music industry business are perfect for those who are passionate about pop music and singing/songwriting. As well, private lessons for vocalist, guitar, bass, drum set, piano/keyboards, horns, brass, winds and strings will also be offered.
The induction of these new programs just adds diversity of Calgary’s most esteemed music education facility, who now offer musical training and courses in classical, jazz, vocal, and pop genres. And if this wasn’t already exciting enough news for you pop-lovers, acclaimed strings-player and Grammy voter (yes, THE Grammys) James Desautels has just joined the group of celebrated Conservatory alumni. Desautels has toured with groups like Pearl Jam and has extensive experience in songwriting, producing, conducting, and composing. If you are a fan of NBC’s The Office, you’ve likely already hear him work his magic on the violin. His work with the ensemble Strings Attached, a strings rendition of Guns N’ Roses’ iconic Sweet Child of Mine, was featured in the last episode of the hit show.
Saying that there are no programs for the music you want to study is no excuse now, head to http://www.mtroyal.ca to find out more about this program and to sign up for their newsletter. For a complete profile of James Desautels, visit http://blogs.mtroyal.ca.
On a sunny Tuesday morning, four enthusiastic students sat down for an interview about WHOLE Churchill. WHOLE Churchill is a community created by Haroon M., Megan C., Rahul A., and Sidharth S., to promote awareness of mental health for all youth, starting with the students of Sir Winston Churchill High School.
Shruti:What is WHOLE Churchill?
Haroon: WHOLE Churchill is an initiative created by us to address mental illness stigma within Sir Winston Churchill High School (SWC). There are quite a lot of students who are stressed by the workload, especially students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. There are outlets and we were sure that these students aren’t aware of these outlets. So we created this community to address this issue and to provide ways for students and let them know that this is the help that is available, and this is how we can help them.
Shruti:What inspired you to create WHOLE Churchill?
Megan: It began with the wellness of students in the morning and during exams and how tired and stressed we all are. We wanted the whole student body to be involved in this, so we came up with fun activities. This is helpful, because even if the students do not get any of the information on mental health, they could still relax and take their mind off of stressful things for a little while.
Sidharth: So we have a central committee of four members. We work closely with Youth Central’s Youth Volunteer Corps, with Haroon being on the steering committee, and he helps us get volunteers to help run our events. We are starting as a small committee right now, but we are planning to expand and take this further, in the near future as well.
Shruti:What do you think is the biggest issue with mental illness is today?
Haroon: Well, about 3 million youth, from ages 12-19 in Canada are affected by mental illness. You can find more information on youth mental illness from the Canadian Mental Health Association. Mental illness isn’t given much of a glance at in high school, unlike in universities. There was a student from Crescent Heights High School, Brett Rothery; his hashtag #CHHSLetsTalk went viral and people became aware that there are high schools that need these outlets.
Rahul: There is a lack of understanding with how serious of an issue this really is. Most people connect mental health with Schizophrenia, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimers; the major ones that occur typically towards the end of life. But even at a young age, anxiety and simple stress are factors that high school students, and people in the educational environment experience all the time. We believe that by paying attention to some of the simplest stages, we can prepare for some of these issues later in life.
Shruti: How can we, as youth, help with this?
Rahul: We need to be more accepting. We need to acknowledge the issue because people don’t really want to talk about it. No one wants to say, “I am struggling with a mental disease and this will impact my life negatively.” If people know that society will accept them and that there are resources out there, they wouldn’t be as reluctant to take steps to help themselves.
Megan: A lot of students joke around saying things like, “Oh kill me now, I have so many things to do!”, and things like that, they don’t realize how harmful it is as someone may really be thinking of doing something like that. So we need to stop using that kind of language.
Rahul: Yeah, for example, if I say, “I’m going to kill myself”, we all know that I’m not actually going to kill myself. But if someone really meant it and everyone thought they were just joking, it misses the whole point of helping that person, and others like them.
Shruti:I agree. Well, this interview is coming to a close, so do you have any last comments?
Haroon: We not only want to let students in our high school know about this issue, but also students in other high schools and tackle problems like this.
Rahul: If this extends beyond our school, that’s when we have really achieved our goal.
Sidharth: You work with Youth Are Awesome right? It’s just an another outlet with who we can start this discussion with. We think that by starting such an initiative with SWC, we can get other high schools to have a community like this as well.
Megan: Although people might say, “Oh this can never happen to me I can deal with all this stress!” But this is something that we all struggle with! We just want to raise awareness that it can happen to anyone.
For those of you who are just emerging from a 9-year food coma, Sled Island is a huge event held in Calgary each year that hosts more than 200 up-and-coming bands. But music isn’t the festival’s only attraction; I counted almost 40 different all-ages events on its schedule, which runs from June 24th to 28th and encompasses everything from concerts to art shows, films, comedy, and special events like yoga and punk rock bingo.
In my opinion, Sled Island is the best thing to come along for us under-18s since the virgin mojito, and my fellow bloggers Anayat Sidhu and Nikki Negre and I plan to take full advantage; minors can purchase wristbands that give them full access to the all-ages events for only $50, whereas the least expensive passes for adults are $200. (Check out http://shop.sledisland.com.) It’s such a difference in price, one of Sled’s co-ordinators told us, that many adults try to pose as minors just to get the all-ages tickets! Talk about a reversal of roles!
As I’ve mentioned, Sled Island is about more than music. But since I’m that person who can’t go into an Italian restaurant and order anything but pizza (gluten-free, of course), this article will primarily focus on what the festival is most famous for: its many concerts and bands.
Sled Island does not claim to favour a specific music genre, and instead includes indie, funk, art-rock, disco, doom, drone, new wave, surf, sludge, shoegaze, grunge, garage-punk, hardcore, and folk style bands in its lineup. This works well for us, since Nikki, Anayat, and I have vastly different tastes in music- punk rock, indie pop, and jazz/funk, respectively- that will make our festival adventure together reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz in how all three of us are looking for different things from the same supreme music festival.
Nikki and Anayat are most excited to see Godspeed You! Black Emperor, a band that takes its name from a documentary about the Black Emperors, a Japanese biker gang. This is surely the most popular band on Sled’s lineup this year, and I’m sure all who see and hear will testify that their post-rock sound shook the seats of Central United Church, where they’ll play on Thursday and Friday at 8 pm. http://www.sledisland.com/2015/godspeed-you-black-emperor
I am most looking forward to the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, playing on July 27th at the Olympic Plaza. Perhaps it’s that I dig their incredibly entertaining and multifaceted performance style, or just that their description on the Sled Island site is a little more explanatory than “passive-aggressive” (Indie band Milk) “punctually insane” (Art-rock band Other Jesus) or “dedicated to putting a bandana on your golden retriever” (garage-punk band Dried Out). Either way, I am excited to see them in action! http://www.sledisland.com/2015/hypnotic-brass-ensemble
And, of course, there are a few more bands that we would like to see: Son Lux, Blonde Elvis, Beat Cops, Teengirl Fantasy, Turnstile, Television, Viet Cong, King Tuff, and Body/Head.
Right now, you may feel like life is a bit of a mess. With exams and school finally coming to a close, you may feel burdened and stressed beyond relief–or maybe that’s just me. However, if there are any sympathizers out there, here are some videos to put a smile on your face and make you realize that the world isn’t all “doom and gloom.”

…and just keep telling yourself, “you’re almost there.” Good luck!
I had the fortunate opportunity of travelling to a city of art, beauty, and culture – Lisbon, Portugal. From the moment I walked out of the airport, I felt as though I was in a painted picture. Everything around me felt so culturally and artistically connected. From the buildings to the cobblestone streets, everything took my breath away from me. I was paralyzed by the magnificence of the city, it was somewhere I had always dreamed of being. Families would sit at cafes and enjoy breakfast together, couples would sit on the dock watching the sunset, and teenagers like you and me would be walking around on those cobblestone streets with their friends creating lasting memories. It was a dreamland alike to one we grew up reading about in fairytales.
The city reminded me a famous quote by Paul Coelho in his famous novel, The Alchemist, “It’s true that everything has its Personal Legend, but one day that Personal Legend will be realized. So each thing has to transform itself into something better, and to acquire a Personal Legend, until someday, the Soul of the World becomes one thing only.”
While I was there I had to snap some shots as memories of that picture perfect city, and today I want to share them with you, I hope you enjoy and perhaps to one day visit that city of magic.
Canada is hosting the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup! I’m sure a lot of you didn’t know that – I didn’t even know that till about two days ago.
Canada’s female soccer team played the first match of the World Cup in Edmonton on June 6th. They defeated China with a score of 1-0. Christine Sinclair led Canada to its victory with her last minute penalty shot.
There was so much celebration in the field, and it’s really exciting that Canada, as the host country, started off with a win. It was obvious that the team of girls were very excited as well. They were seen celebrating after the match at a grocery store in Edmonton, it’s obvious soccer isn’t their only skill!
We’re all afraid of something, whether we’re conscious of it or not. Most of the time we let our fears and inadequacies run our lives, making us feel powerless and unmotivated. I’m not going to make the due date. There’s never enough time. I don’t have perfectly sculpted body to pull off this bikini. I missed to review one section of the chapter; I’m so gonna fail the test. I ate a Subway cookie, now I feel guilty and fat. I’m gonna throw up if I go on this ride. Blah, blah, blah…….
With this kind of mindset, we constantly provoke fear, which often results in stress, anxiety and at the wort cases— depression.
For me, it’s extremely important to face my fears because I hate living a life full of apprehension and anguish. I know life isn’t easy, but I don’t have to make it harder than it already is. Right? Life is short, and if we keep restricting ourselves from fully experiencing it has to offer because of fear, then it’s our loss.
Before facing your fears, I strongly believe that it’s important clarify first that you’re good enough, you can do this, and that you have nothing to lose. Get rid of your ego and just do it. Believe me, at the end of the day, you won’t have any regrets. These are some important benefits associated with facing our fears:
The first sequel to last week’s playlist, today I bring you a compilation of some of my favourite soundtrack pieces of *fairly* recent years. These may be songs made famous by, recorded for or original to their respective films.
1. The Breakfast Club: Don’t You (Forget About Me) – Simple Minds
No movie soundtrack playlist could possibly be complete without the iconic closing track to the 1985 blockbuster.
2. School of Rock: School of Rock – The School of Rock Cast
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP7kExN8LFA
School of Rock may just be my favourite movie ever and listening to Jack Black front this song makes me oh so happy.
3. Armageddon: I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing – Aerosmith
This Aerosmith power ballad is meaningful to me in more than one way.
4. Casino Royale: You Know My Name – Chris Cornell
Hailed as one of rock’s greatest frontmen, Chris Cornell powerfully delivers 2007’s Casino Royale title theme.
5. The DUFF: Favorite Record – Fall Out Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6V029N3XOQ
I genuinely like this song more than I like the film itself.
6. She’s The Man: Dirty Little Secret – The All American Rejects
This song has staying power and will never fail to remind me of Amanda Bynes before she let herself go.
7. The Fault In Our Stars: All Of The Stars – Ed Sheeran
It’s cliché, I know, but Ed Sheeran has the voice of an angel and deserved to make this list. So many TFIOS feels.
8. The Lion King: Hakuna Matata – The Cast of The Lion King
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xB5ceAruYrI

As a girl growing up in a society where being beautiful is often defined as being tall and thin, I have often found it hard to accept myself. While many search for entertainment in magazines and television, I couldn’t always find the same enjoyment others did. I didn’t see curvy girls as often as I saw thin girls, and this has the potential to affect young girl’s in ways we don’t realize. Often, eating disorders can stem from the vision of being “perfect”, when in reality there is no such thing as perfection.
Many girls aspire to be as thin as the models they see in their favorite magazines, but what they don’t realize is these dreams are unrealistic. Often these models are photoshopped – the idea of a girl chasing after make-believe standards is upsetting and unhealthy. It’s one thing to have health goals, but aspiring to get your body a certain way through less than ideal manners is not the way. I never had the role model I needed when I needed it, so let me be honest when I say the best you is when you are yourself. Be thick. Be thin. It doesn’t matter, because you’re beautiful either way and if your friends/peers don’t accept you for who you are, then maybe it’s best if you kick them to the curb and trade them for some more accepting pals. If you’re worried about a guy caring if you have a thigh gap, let me tell you: he won’t.
When I was thirteen, I stumbled across an Instagram page that belonged to Calgary’s own Honor Curves, a 6’1” self love advocate who preaches body positivity to her growing audience of 111k followers. As a girl who struggled with self-love and was used to seeing thin models in mainstream entertainment, I quickly tapped on the Follow button as this was just what I needed: a role model who wasn’t perfect, but working towards their goals and encouraging others along the way. Honorine encourages her followers to snap a picture with the hashtag #honormycurves and share their story. To this day, I still follow her and I’ve always dreamt of meeting her because her unwavering positivity is inspiring to not only me, but hundreds of thousands of people. I’ve always wanted to share how big of an effect she’s had on my life, and hopefully she can inspire you too now.
Seeing plus-sized models in magazines is becoming increasingly more common these days which is very exciting for those of us who’ve never had someone of similar body type to look up to. Earlier this year, Ashley Graham made headlines for being the first plus size model featured in Sports Illustrated. As well, Tess Holliday was declared “World’s First Size 22 Supermodel” on the May 22nd issue of People magazine, and inspiring young curvy models such as Barbara Ferreira are finding success in the modelling industry as well, proving that beauty does not only exist in a size 00. This trend of curvy women in media is a trend I’m here for and will always backup. In the word’s of Honor Curves, “We can create our own reality, and I believe that self-love is never gonna be a story that gets old.”, which I agree with.
In reality, it doesn’t matter about the size. As a fifteen year old girl who has known the struggle of not feeling accepted for their body, I will continue to spread positivity to all the girls who are struggling with self acceptance and I hope you do the same. It’s important to remember a girl is beautiful no matter what they look like and the fact that many girls don’t realize the fact that they are so beautiful is disheartening. I’ve never had anyone to look up to until recently, and it took lots of work to overcome the negative thoughts in my head that told me I wasn’t beautiful. I continually struggle with self-acceptance, but I will admit I have come a long way and I am proud of myself. Wherever you are on your body positivity journey, I support you. To quote Ashley Graham, “Be you. Be real. Be authentic. Be your favorite kind of woman. And remember, this is the generation of body diversity.”
Here are some tips I’ve come up with to be happy and confident this summer
Studies have shown that exercising increases endorphins, which lower the rate of depression. You’ll feel happier and get fit at the same time, so why not? A good way to have fun and run is participating in Calgary’s Color Me Rad Marathon, which is on June 27th 2015.
Often in the summer, I can get pretty down. I’ve learned staying inside does nothing to boost my happiness so this summer I am dedicated to making it the best one yet, surrounded by my friends and family. After all, studies show they can add to your happiness.
Now is the best time to treat yourself and not let anyone, or anything stand in the way of you being happy. Wanna eat the last piece of cake? Treat yo self!
