Kandace Peroramas is the News & Social Media Junior Editor for Youth Are Awesome. Aware of the impact youth like herself can have on the community, she joined this Youth Central program to showcase and advocate for her love of writing, reading, family, friends, music, and travelling. She also believes the world is constantly changing, so staying informed keeps her sane! As an I.B. student, Kandace values balancing her education and passions, so she enjoys spending her time volunteering or scooping at Village Ice Cream. In the fall, she will be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Science with the goal of becoming a pediatrician. All in all, Kandace hopes that through her writing, readers can connect with her in a personal way.
After completing three gruelling weeks of I.B. exams, I decided to reward myself by watching the YouTube videos I’ve missed. Succumbing to BuzzFeed videos, I did, however, also stumble across a video that was going viral called, “history of the entire world, i guess.” The last thing I wanted to do was watch a 19-minute…
Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Kaiz Alarakyia for Youth Central’s 25th anniversary celebration. Every two weeks this year, Youth Central will spotlight 25 alumni to reflect on their time spent with the organization, as well as to see what they have been up to since! I’m sure after you read about Kaiz…
The day I scrolled through my Facebook timeline 3 years ago and watched slam poetry champion, Neil Hilborn, perform this was the day I fell in love with slam poetry: I vividly remember tearing up because his performance was so passionate and raw, and I had no clue until that moment such kind of art existed.…
When I was younger, I was very shy. It was never in my nature to put myself out there for the world to see. I was content in my solitude and also being around the people I loved most. But in the years that followed, I realized the best thing I could let happen to…
here are bands, and then there are bands. You know, the ones that understand you and are your go-to for a musical pick-me-up? Yeah, those bands. Once in a blue moon, even, those bands perform in your city during their tour. And that’s how it all starts. The 1975 is an English rock/synth-pop/indie/alternative band that…
With the ability to write about a wide range of topics, Dhriti is certainly a refreshing and bright personality to have on YAA. I had the utmost pleasure of meeting with her at Vendome Cafe and chatting over our salads, meat pie, and sandwich. Very eloquent and thoughtful when she speaks, it felt easy taking…
ear Senior Me, If there was one person who fell into the “grade-11-is-the-hardest-year” trap, it was undoubtedly you. Though procrastination, taking on too many things at once, and not using time wisely are seemingly the qualities of any high school student, as the year dragged on, you became the poster child for it. It didn’t…
With the endless streams of media and news at our fingertips, who has time to sort through hundreds of articles in order to stay on top of current events? Add in the hustle & bustle of your everyday life, the news might then be the last thing on your mind. There are 5 solutions to…
{Source} You never really know what the New Year will bring until it’s December 31st and you’re trying to piece 12 months worth of memory. 2015, undoubtedly, was a year that flew right by. But that’s not without a laundry list of events we’d like to forget about or remember for the rest of our lives.…
{Source} Mental health awareness is something I have been passionate about for almost 4 years. It started when I saw close friends suffer from depression and anxiety, and I felt helpless since I did not know how to rightfully approach their situation. It’s so easy to feel like your words of comfort and support are…
This picture was taken a year and a half ago when my family went to Europe over Spring Break. It was after midnight, yet our smiles as we stand in front of the Parisian landmark did not falter. It’s difficult to imagine bearing any other expression because the memories we had of Paris were of walking along the…
The Arts and Culture scene in Calgary is booming, so I’m lucky to have performed at and be involved with Arts Commons, the Jubilee Auditorium, and local festivals. It’s no surprise then I jumped on the opportunity to attend Holt Renfrew’s Fairytales & Legends Fashion Gala last Friday night. {Source} As part of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s…
If I had a dollar for every time someone mentioned post-secondary to me this month, I’d have enough to pay for post-secondary tuition. Although overwhelming, this time next year, I’ll be applying to universities, and I’ll be glad I’ve already thought about my options. But if you haven’t, would like to or just need another…
My life is always going a thousand miles a minute; I can never seem to catch a break from the stresses of school and extracurricular activities. I find that the best way to combat this problem is by drinking tea and taking a nap. However, if there is one thing I’m learning to do these past…
{Source} To be completely honest, politics has never caught my interest the same way it does others. But what caused me (and you) to check hashtags and read articles regarding this election was the hype. We could never get away from it because promises upon promises were thrown at us everywhere we went. This is not a…
