#SharkWeek Lesson No. 3

When in doubt, use a giant illuminated squid as bait.

Inspired by an event that occurred in 2003 when a nine foot female great white shark’s tag was found washed ashore on the Australian coast, David Riggs, an acclaimed filmmaker began a hunt for an even larger predator that could have caused the shark’s unfortunate demise.

The hunt was the feature of yesterday night’s “Super Predator.” Researchers theorize from various data sources that the smaller shark could have been eaten by a much larger–potentially up to 16-foot-long–great white shark. In order to stimulate the culprit from the depths of the sea, Riggs’ team experimented with a variety of methods, including using sound signals, submerging divers in the “Flying Machine” (a vessel that usually allows for the safe containment of divers), as well as utilizing a 15-foot-long model of a squid adorned with illuminating panels.

Although the hunt was not entirely successful, it still produced some exhilarating moments. But I guess the bait just didn’t catch on this time around.

Calgary Stampede Food Binge 2015: Red Curry Poutine

When two of my favourite foods come together, there’s no way I’m going to miss out. The Poutine King‘s new Red Curry Delight Poutine sounds as delicious as it tastes, and is a sure classic. The food truck, located convenietly by the North entrance of the Big Four Building, also sells many other types of specialty poutines such as the Garden (tofu) and Fisherman (salmon) that I would love to try next time.

photo 3 (3)
The Poutine King’s menu and prices

At $11.50 for a standard container of poutine, I felt that it was very reasonably priced for something specialty and sold at the Stampede. As well, it was very filling, so you definitely get the most out of your money.

In terms of taste, I have to say that it was incredibly delicious. The curry sauce was tasty and had a dull spice to it, which means that it can be deceiving at first; after the first few bites, I had determined it wasn’t spicy enough and added Sriracha. In hindsight, I probably wouldn’t do that again if I knew how spicy it would eventually get. My favourite part of this dish would hands-down be the marinated chicken. The bits were perfectly tender and flavourful, the only complaint I have is that I would’ve liked to see more of it in my poutine! The fries dipped in the curry sauce were great and I found that, unlike normal poutine, the sauce was distributed throughout the entire container. No more plain fries at the bottom of the box! A quick tip for eating this dish: do not eat in a hot environment! The poutine comes steaming and is spicy and I found that I quickly became overwhelmed at how hot everything was. However, don’t let that get in the way of you enjoying this amazing midway meal. Head into the basement of the nearby Big Four Building, where there is plenty of seating and further food choices.

In conclusion, best poutine I’ve ever had? Pretty much.

All opinions are my own.

Calgary Stampede Food Binge 2015: Glazed Donut Grilled Cheese

{Source}

On Tuesday, I was happy to spend 9 fun-filled hours at the Stampede grounds, going on rides and eating the classics we love. But if you need more than mini donuts to satisfy your Midway cravings, why not try something new? Making my way to Melt Town Grilled Cheese and Poutine near the Agriculture Building, I decided to try their Glazed Donut Grilled Cheese! As described on the Calgary Stampede blog“the sweetness of the donut works in harmony with the savory melted string cheese.”

Even after paying a pricey $10 for the grilled cheese, I was excited to try this creation. This was well-advertised at Melt Town’s food truck, so I wanted to see if it would live up to the hype. Once I got my order, I was surprised at the small portion size. But don’t let that disappoint you because good things come in small packages! After taking my first bite, I was immediately hit by the sweetness of the donut and the crunchy sandwich crust. Every time you go in for a bite, you can expect your fingers to get sticky from the glaze!

The bursts of sweetness from the donut was a pleasant contrast to the slice of ham and the Cheddar, Havarti, Mozzarella, and Colby Jack cheeses that come with Melt Town’s sandwiches. The donut grilled cheese also comes with a sauce that happens to be a house made tropical tomato soup dip. Unfortunately, with my hustle and bustle around the Stampede grounds, I did not get the chance to try out the sauce. But like the sandwich, you never know what to expect, so I suggest you give the sauce a taste when you get the chance!

Even when a glazed donut grilled cheese does not come to mind when craving a mid-afternoon snack, I am a firm believer of trying something new. So on those hot Stampede days where you can’t decide between eating something sweet or savory, don’t compromise with this sandwich!

Enjoyed my review of Melt Town? Then be sure to check out them out on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook!

Happy Stampeding,

Kandace  🙂

How Social Media Can Ruin Your Relationship

It’s no new knowledge that the impact of social media in today’s world is huge.  In all age groups and demographics, the use of websites and programs such as Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and many more is booming.  Although you’re probably aware of the presence of Social media in your community, here are some stats to reinforce the impact.

  • There are 2,484,915,152 Internet users in the World, or 35% of the total population
  • There are 1,856,680,860 active social network users in the World, or 26% of the total population
  • There are 6,572,950,124 mobile subscribers in the World, or 93% of the total population
    (stats from here)

You’ve probably heard of how social media impacts society as a whole.  Hollywood productions create unrealistic expectations, commercials influence consumers to over-spend, and if you’ve taken Grade 10 Social Studies like me, you know that media is a leading cause of globalization, but more so homogenization.  Examples are actually everywhere.  Take the McDonalds which have infiltrated almost every nation, or that shirt you own that was made in China.

globalization

Alright, I could continue about the harmful results of social media on society, but you will/will have heard enough about that in Social Studies.

How does social media impact us as individuals on a smaller scale? Social media affects relationships within the family, friendships, and pretty much every other type of relationship, but today I will be zooming in on the dating type of relationship.  Yes, that one.  Believe it or not, social media has a subtle yet powerful impact on your relationship with your boyfriend, girlfriend, crush, lover, spouse, and so on and so forth.  Although the benefits of social media on relationships do exist, I believe that more people need to open their eyes to the potential downfalls.  You could even think of this as words of advice~

Let’s get started!

1. Over Communication

communication quote 1

It’s no secret that communication (actually being able to talk to one another in real life) is key to a successful relationship.  A wise man once said, “Communication in a relationship is like oxygen.  Without it, it dies”, and he couldn’t have been more right.  I can’t emphasize it enough – communication is key!  And yes, you can text your paramour countless times, and hold friendly conversations over text and messaging.  However, did you know that one of the main problems with high school relationships is that the two people involved are unable to actually talk to each other in real life?  Sure, texting can be fun, and it’s useful for making plans.  But is there really a point in having a completely online relationship?

I don’t know about you, but the idea of only being able to talk via text, and awkwardly standing around in person, does not appeal to me.  It turns out that couples often communicate so much over text, that they discuss everything online.  Therefore, when it comes down to it they have nothing to say to each other in person!

Then again, some say that if you’ve found the right person you’ll be able to talk to him/her easily.  What if you actually have found the right person, but you’ve overtalked so much online that you really can’t think of anything to say.  I’m speaking from experience- I’ve watched the relationships between people I know dissolve because of lack of in person communication.  Once again, don’t get me wrong.  There’s nothing wrong with friendly, casual online communication.  However, if it means making or breaking a successful relationship, take your eyes away from your electronic device and make eye contact with that special person.

2. Jealousy

jealousy

Jealousy.  It’s one of the main disrupting factors of all happy relationships.  First, let’s go over jealousy when it comes to communicating online.  With any form of social media such as Facebook or Snapchat, there’s always the question of: Is he/she talking to another girl/guy right now? Some people become so worked up about this that they regularly log on to each other’s accounts.  But the thing is, trust is also a key component in a successful relationship.

You could almost say that social media weakens the bond of trust between two individuals.  Instead of being happy because of the other person, some people become extremely jealous, and that’s no fun.  Not only does the direct online communicating spark mistrust and bad feelings, but sites such as Instagram, Ask.fm, and others do so as well.  Even if it’s a small thing such as liking someone’s photo or commenting, many people become jealous very easily.  Yes, you may categorize these people as clingy and obsessive, but at the end of the day all they want is for their loved one to be faithful.  Social media has a large amount of potential when it comes to weakening bonds of trust between two people.

3. Manners

texting and talking

This one’s pretty obvious.  It goes for any relationship though- if you’re spending time with someone you love, your attention should be fully on that individual and not your electronic device.  It’s a timeless rule! In order to make that person feel like he/she is actually important and cared about, you should be able to have fun without your phone.  (Unless you pull it out to take a cute selfie that is)!

The bottom line is, if you are in a romantic relationship and you want to maintain it, use social media in moderation and have a sense of balance in your life.  Social media isn’t bad, but if used the wrong way it can be poisonous.

Bubble Mania Restaurant Review

0

Location: 455 16 Ave NE Calgary (Click for map)

Website: http://www.bubblemaniacafe.com

My first impression of Bubble Mania when I first entered was that its interior design was impressively modern. Although food is a vital factor in rating a restaurant, I am a person who is faithful to aesthetics as well even if the matter pertains to eating. My favourite decoration/ furnishing element was the lighting. It was simple, but it added a modern but cozy glow to the surroundings. Bubble Mania is also known to have the best bubble tea in Calgary, which piqued my interest and convinced me to visit. These are some photos of the interior setting of the restaurant.

FullSizeRender-2FullSizeRender-5

The specialties of Bubble Mania are bubble tea and chicken wings. I found their way of serving bubble tea to be quite unique in comparison to other restaurants and bubble tea stores. This was due to how they served a bowl of lychee jelly beforehand and afterwards gave the bubble tea, implying that one is free to add however much jelly he/she wants. They also gave us baskets to put bones into and wet wipes to clean our hands with before they even served the dishes. The bubble tea flavour I ordered was taro. Despite how the bubble tea was exceptional, I felt like the ice was a smidgen too overpowering and too abundant.

FullSizeRender-4FullSizeRender-3

The main dishes were fairly light in terms of amount at first glance, but they are actually quite filling and affordable. My favourite was the popcorn chicken mainly due to the sauce and the simplicity of the concept. The two dishes I ordered were salt and pepper chicken wings and popcorn chicken (the menu had a different name for it, but if you ask for popcorn chicken they understand) For small get togethers with friends or quick dinners with immediate family, this place is perfect. Because of the convenience when eating, it’s very easy to have conversations while enjoying a meal. Bubble Mania’s service is also quick and the staff are fairly friendly. Despite being busy, each member caters to your needs as soon as possible.

Overall, Bubble Mania is a decent restaurant to visit. Both pleasing to the eye and competent in service, it is a great place to treat others and oneself. Next time, if you want to treat friends, Bubble Mania is the place to go 🙂

Calgary Stampede Food Binge 2015: Bourbon Street Peppercorn Poutine

IMG_3878

Once a year, The Stampede rolls into town for a good 10 days, offering food, rides and experiences of a lifetime that some people around the world would only dream of. On Monday, July 6th, I headed down to the grounds to take in one of the many performers at the Coca Cola stage, Canada’s own Lights, and of course enjoy some of the great food down at the grounds.

I won’t lie, I’m a mini donuts gal. I’ll usually go down for the day and enjoy my time with friends and leave with a bag of mini donuts to share with family, but I decided change is good. Looking at the list of new foods at the Calgary Stampede, I stopped at the Bourbon Street Peppercorn Poutine. The image of the poutine was appealing and making me a teensy bit hungry and I just knew I had to try it.

I’ve always been a big poutine fan, so when my mother and I got to the grounds on Monday night, we set out in search of finding the poutine. The only problem? We didn’t know where it was or which booth sold it.  After about 15 minutes of searching, we resolved to asking an employee where to find it. The individual handed us a map of all the new foods at the stampede and where to find them. The Bourbon Street Peppercorn Poutine is sold by Mardi Gras Grill, a booth located near the Saddledome.

Screen shot 2015-07-07 at 9.13.34 PMSource

The poutine was 13$, and if you’re thinking that’s a little expensive, what isn’t? One of the things I liked most about the poutine is that the portion was pretty big and equates to the price of the meal. I shared it with my mother and found it was quite filling, so if you’re afraid of it being too small, don’t. Another thing I enjoyed was that the gravy and cheese curds were evenly distributed throughout the poutine. Often I’ll have a poutine and find there is no more gravy or curds after the top layer of the poutine, but that was not the case.

IMG_3876

On top of everything was a generous amount of steak. When I saw it, I’ll admit I was a little surprised. The sight of the poutine looked nothing like the one advertised on the Calgary Stampede’s website, but nonetheless it tasted very good. Advertised on the booth was a sign stating “Calgary Stampede’s Best Poutine 2015”, and I must say it was definitely good. I can’t say they were the best, because I haven’t tried the other poutines at the Stampede, but if you’re looking for a good poutine, the Mardi Gras Grill has it.

Why an apple a day keeps the doctor away

0
Apples aren’t just for snacking, they are also a superfood. Plus there are many ways in which you can use apples to not only improve your health but life too. Apples come in so many varieties so the choices are endless. So be sure to find an apple that you are sure to love. It doesn’t matter what variety you choose because they all have many benefits. Apples are full of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Thus try to eat an apple a day, and find out why it’s keeping the doctor away….

1.  LOWERS CHOLESTEROL

Apples in themselves help lower cholesterol. Except they taste much much better by adding them to oatmeal. Oatmeal and apples both have loads of fiber. So when you combine these two they turn into an awesome breakfast. They are specifically great sources of soluble fibre. That soaks up water, and rids extra toxins and cholesterol in the body. You can use steel cut oats or rolled oats for the oatmeal. To that oatmeal you would add a cup of apples or a couple tablespoons of good ol’ applesauce.

2. PRETTY SKIN

Due to the fact that apples are full of vitamin C, they keep your skin supplied with a top nutrient. The vitamin C in apples helps clear up your skin, and keep it soft and smooth. Vitamin C is a nutrient that manufactures collagen. Collagen in the body is important as it aids in keeping your skin bright, free from sun damage, and fine lines like wrinkles. Pair apples with some almonds or almond butter. Almonds also contain a great nutrient known as vitamin E which will further help improve the skin, body and overall health. Apples combined with the fat in almonds help the body absorb the antioxidants much better, because there is some fat included.

3. FIGHTS CONSTIPATION

You have to admit it, we have all been through constipation. And it is no fun. However, lucky for you apples are much better than laxatives that will make you feel better in no time. They are easy and more natural, with zero side effects. Add apples diced or sliced to anything even a simple salad. Since salads are already good for constipation make sure you leave off any cheesy or dairy dressings. A really great salad combo is apples, tomatoes, strawberries, cranberries, almonds, green peas or chickpeas (hummus will do), grated carrots, lemon juice, and some salt/pepper on top of a fresh bed of greens like spinach, arugula, or kale. This will fix your constipation that same day in a couple of hours.

4. KEEPS YOU FULL

There are many people who are suffering with weight problems. However, instead of starving yourself or going in a strict diet, opt for a smoothie with an added apple to keep you full. In addition, you will have the proper meal proportions too. You can use a Fuji variety. For a sweeter flavour use gala, or golden delicious. For a tart flavour you would use Granny Smith. For a mix of both red delicious apples are a favourite. The pectin in apples which is basically it’s fibre will go and swell in your stomach. However, this will not bloat you. Instead, it adds a yummy flavour to smoothies, which keeps you full longer.

5. BOOST MOOD AND ENERGY

Apples are a favourite all over the world to munch on as a snack. The are especially great to have at work, or in school. The antioxidants in apples improve your mood quickly. Thus you get a spike in energy. Apples contain water as well as natural sugars that actually break down slowly. Due to the fact that they break down slowly the slow integration of carbs in your bloodstream allow that energized feeling that lasts hours, even though you get a spike form the sugars.
So there you have it, apples are A-making. So instead of having coffee try to have an apple or two instead, and see what the results are for you when your in a sluggish state. No matter how you eat your apples they will always have the best health effects. So next time you hit the grocery store be sure to pick these babies up. Also try to of course ‘eat an apple a day!’

#SharkWeek2015 Lesson No. 2

Never underestimate girl power.

In tonight’s “Bride of Jaws,” we saw a quest to hunt the notorious “Joan of Shark,” a great white female measuring up to 18 feet, who caused havoc in Australian waters back in 2014. Risks are taken, as filmmaker Andy Casagrande attempt to retag the great white to warn future potential victims.

The episode was riddled with tension and proves that female sharks are a force to be reckoned with.

See a short snippet of “Bride of Jaws” below.

Although attacks by great white sharks are rare, they can occasionally occur through test biting, a process that occurs when animals are curious and believe that they may have found a food source. In addition, female sharks can be found to be a bit more intimidating than male sharks from their size, as they are generally found to be larger than male sharks.

The largest shark to be caught on film was a female great white over 20 feet long and was found to be pregnant.

Great whites reproduce via viviparity in which offspring develop in the uterus, like many other mammals.

Even though sharks may have a nefarious reputation, many of its species, including great white sharks, remain vulnerable. Make sure to check out Change the Tide to find out how you can contribute to ocean conservation.

2 Easy Recipes

0

Ever felt a need for a super yummy yet filling snack? I’ve got the solution for you! I, myself, enjoy eating quite a bit. So, I have decided to create some delicious and somewhat healthy recipes. Hopefully, you’ll try them out when you feel like having a mid-day snack.

The Yogurt Snack Bowl:

Food

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup of Yogurt (Flavour of your choice)
  • 1 Banana (sliced)
  • A handful of cereal or anything crunchy, like nuts
  • A handful of dried fruits ( I used dried mulberries)

Directions:

  1. Place the yogurt into a bowl.
  2. Place sliced bananas on top.
  3. Sprinkle on the cereal/nuts and dried fruit(s).

This recipe is great for anyone with a sweet tooth. It satisfies the sugar craving and tastes amazing. You can definitely switch up the ingredients. If you don’t like cereal or nuts, you can try adding granola or anything else that floats your boat. The options are endless. It is also very quick to make. It is great for those days when you don’t have too much time.Try it out!

The Sandwich Bagel:

Food 2

Ingredients:

  • A handful of diced tomatoes
  • A slice of cheese
  • A slice of choice of meat
  • Half of a bagel
  • Other toppings (lettuce, onions, olives, etc…)

Directions:

  1. Place choice of meat onto bagel.
  2. Place cheese on top of bagel.
  3. Place into microwave for a 15 seconds to melt cheese.
  4. Top off with some diced tomatoes and/or other toppings.

This recipe is perfect for those who enjoy savoury snacks. Having only half of a bagel is a good amount to consume as a snack so that it won’t ruin your appetite for other meals. You can make this healthier by adding more vegetables to it. If you don’t want meat on it, you can substitute it with other ingredients. You can also add sauces to it. Tweak it to your liking.

Try it, tweak it, taste it!

The Roman Period: A Girl’s Guide to Menstruation in the Eternal City

This past week, that perfect combination of luck and spare cash emerged to allow me to travel to Italy and Greece with a touring group. My expectations were pretty much on par with every girl’s fallacy that life in these places is essentially a B-list chick flick, and were exceeded. Now I’m not saying that my trip is going to be winning any Oscars this year- just that it will be nominated. Indeed, pictures of me “holding up” the tower of Pisa, standing next to the Statue of David, and putting “bunny ears” on the Pope will be shown at the event, in case you didn’t get a chance to catch it on Netflix.

And of course, seeing so many ancient sites, many of which acted as construct for some of our modern-day ideas, was enlightening. Also enlightening was our first day in Rome, when Marsha, a girl on my trip, leaned over to me and said, “You’ve got a spot on your pants.”

I’m not quite sure why I wasn’t prepared for this. I was prepared for bugs, the sun, the rain, pickpockets, long walks up marble steps, and private bathrooms. I guess I thought it would be jet lagged and come 8 hours late or something. But, as by ancient tradition, blood was shed at the colosseum.

Based on my experience, I’ve compiled a list of helpful tips for if you find yourself in the same predicament as me: sightseeing whilst shedding your endometrium.

1. Beware of layovers at the Montreal airport.

Sure, they’ve got tampon dispensers- helpful, as long as they are never confused with their Trident or flavoured condom dispensing counterparts. Granted, I’d be more wary of a mix-up in the other direction; I have been quoted as saying, “I thought they were selling tampon-flavored gum.”

2. The tourist industry in Rome is very accommodating.

In fact, they graciously stock the Colosseum with enough selfie stick vendors so that every PMS-sy woman and her fed-up friends have someone to yell at.

3. Beware of bathroom line-induced toxic shock syndrome-

change your tampon in public if you have to! The Italians have seen worse; David’s always hanging out, and let’s not even get started on Pompeii.

4. Never ask a tour guide for a feminine hygiene item;

don’t be fooled by their seemingly elaborate grasp of the English language! They are operating in a very small niche, and if you’re not asking about the origin of Venetian marble, they probably have no idea what you’re talking about.

5. There must be some sort of uterine pun associated with Florence.

Flow-rence? There’s something there, I know it.

6. If you ever just need to clean up, remember that bidets are a thing. (Verdict: refreshing)

7. And last but not least, always remember that wielding a used tampon is a good way to discourage solicitors from approaching you on the street.

Thanks for reading! I hope that this advice will help you in your travels!

Calgary Stampede Food Binge 2015: Crazy Cone

It is once again the time of plaid, cowboy boots, and stetson hats. Every year, the Stampede attracts more than a million people from Calgary and beyond to enjoy rides, rodeo shows, and unique food. Unique is just one of the things I got when I tried the new Crazy Cone, a J-shaped corn-based tube filled with soft serve. The Calgary Stampede website describes the product as “Freshly made hollowed corn tubes, filled with brain-freezing soft serve ice cream. A low fat, gluten free treat like no other!” I hope I’m not the only one who gets overwhelmed by the amount of fried and fatty foods found at the midway. The combination of grease and heat always leaves me feeling groggy, a reason why I decided to go for something cold and (comparatively) healthy. So did it live up to expectations? Read on to find out.

photo 1 (4)

The stand for the new midway treat is located in the north area of the midway where most food vendors are. Apart from the Crazy Cone, they also sell dessert nachos (would love to try that!) and slushies topped with soft serve. The Crazy Cone itself costs $5 and comes with either chocolate, vanilla, or swirl frozen yogurt and can be topped with sprinkles. I was feeling like a pretty plain treat so I opted for vanilla soft serve with no sprinkles.

photo 2 (2)

I have to say, I had expected the corn tube to be less thick and more like a typical ice cream cone. It definitely surprised me when I first bit into it how thick the walls were and how hard and crunchy it was. I definitely would’ve preferred the product more if there was more room for soft serve inside the cone as I felt there was too much of it in comparison. Nevertheless, it is a good combination with the soft serve, which was definitely the best part. It was flavorful and sweet and paired well with the corn tube. The consistency of the soft serve is not like usual soft serves and seemed to be more icy than usual, but it was great nevertheless.

photo 3 (2)
Ratio of soft serve compared with ratio of corn tube

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by the fact that the soft serve did not extend all the way throughout the cone, and as I was finishing it, I was left with a hollow corn tube that didn’t taste all that terrific on its own.

photo 4 (4)

Despite this fact, I thought that the Crazy Cone was a very interesting midway food that had people going up to me to ask where I got it from. If you’re looking for a unique and comparatively cheap way to cool down this Stampede, the Crazy Cone is worth a try!

All opinions are my own.

#SharkWeek Lesson Number 1

Sharks don’t like to be filmed.

So if it’s not for scientific reasons, don’t try to film a shark underwater. It will come to bite you later–no pun intended.

We saw how the REMUS SharkCam, a highly developed navigational and filming instrument, got severely beat up in 2013.

“But the hunter soon became the hunted.”

Maybe they’re just shy?

Although it is difficult to gauge the force of the bites of a variety of sharks, with approximately 29 880 teeth used in the lifetime of a white shark, you may want to keep your camera at bay.

To help conserve and protect the oceans, support Change the Tide and find out more on how you can make a difference.

Hate the Hate, Not the Person: a poetic commentary

Recently, the Supreme Court in America ruled gay marriage to be legal in all 50 states and various opposing reactions to this can be seen from both sides of the debate. Facebook profile pictures have changed to include the iconic symbol of pride. Many personal attacks from both sides have caused further polarization between the groups. I believe that it is important to evaluate both sides and not simply disregard one or the other as sinful or bigoted. People are people after all, hate only hurts all and helps no one.

Hate is what gives us the will to spill the blood of many innocents.

Hate puts guns in children’s hands and send them to their graves for the greater good.

Hate makes us stand up but also shut up because those people got what they deserved. Those people…they had it coming.

God sent that storm to wipe the diseased from our land but does He also not look on immobile when that child was molested?

See I detest this.

The constant arguing as though we’ve graduated to the real world only to return to preschool.

Where the rules and social norms are determined by those who shout the loudest.

Where it doesn’t matter what you think but what you look like. Nail that first impression because you only get those 600 seconds that determine your career.

But I don’t want guns in people’s hands.

I want the sun shining on this land.

I want words of power and inspiration. Those that can drive an entire nation to be better, not divided, together right beside us.

When you disagree with an opinion but can still love the person.

And it goes both ways.

Both sides must give up past lives to decide that we, not I, is the answer.

Nothing is too far gone to be saved, if only we stand together and be brave.

That is the victory and that is who we were meant to be.

The end to the circular debate and finally able to unlock the gate not only to what I can do but I what I can do with all of you.

End the hate, it’s not too late.

For we have power beyond the state.

The state is just composed of people after all.

You and me, united we won’t fall.

What it means to be a Hyperpolyglot (and why it’s so cool to be multilingual)

First off, what is a hyperpolyglot? A ‘hyperpolyglot’ is a term coined by linguist Richard Hudson to describe a person with the ability to speak multiple languages. When I mean multiple, I mean 6 or more languages fluently. “That’s crazy!”, you might say – how could that even be possible? Believe it or not, there are a number of dedicated individuals in the world who have actually achieved this status. They are the new hyperpolyglots, and you might be surprised to discover how young some of these people are.

Take Timothy Doner, for example. If you haven’t heard of him in the media before, Timothy is a 19-year-old Harvard freshman who has already mastered 23 different languages. Doner humbly explains that he is fluent in six tongues (French, Farsi, Arabic, Hebrew, and German) but that he’s familiar and engaged with roughly 15 more (ranging from Indonesian to Ojibwe, and several African languages including Xhosa).

The most rewarding thing about attaining all of these languages, he says, is learning the different cultures from around the world. You discover the stories of a nation’s past, present, and future. When speaking in a different tongue, you are also shifting your mind slightly – certain words and phrases may not exist in other languages. This is because each culture has a unique perspective and window to viewing the world. Language reflects that.

” A person who speaks multiple languages has a stereoscopic vision of the world from two or more perspectives, enabling them to be more flexible in their thinking, and learn reading more easily. Multilinguals, therefore, are not restricted to a single world-view, but also have a better understanding that other outlooks are possible… ”

Here are a few cool examples of words that I found without an English equivalence:

Obtaining multiple languages throughout your lifetime not only diversifies your mind, but is also a highly practical skill in the workforce. In fields like international business, knowing at least one other language other than your mother tongue (quite obviously) is a big plus when networking with people.

Being linguistically diverse may seem tough to attempt at first, but learning new languages usually get’s easier after knowing at least two other ones. Hey, most of you guys are probably bilingual already, am I right? Why not take a step further and impress your friends when you randomly whip out Italian during a social gathering? Learning a new language doesn’t have to cost you much. Find online references and worksheets, listen to free podcasts, borrow foreign books at the library and watch films without subtitles. Rosetta Stone may help, but it really isn’t necessary as long as you have the dedication, time, creativity, and passion to keep pressing forward.

…Bonne Chance / Buena Suerte!
