The Benefits of Playing an Instrument (And Being Part of a Band!)

0

tumblr_m01f98bF1N1qewczgo1_500Source

My family has always been particularly gifted in music. The talent passed through each generation can be traced as far back as to my great grandmother, who played live music for silent films. I’ve always considered myself a virtuoso when it comes down to it, although I’ll admit I’m far from perfect. Ever since I played my first chord on the piano, I knew music was the one for me. I’m not a sporty person, so I’ve always found solace in the arts. It wasn’t until 7th grade when music became so much more prominent in my life. These past few years haven given me amazing opportunities, new skills and memories that’ll last a life time, and like the wonderful music teachers that have inspired me, I’m here to share the brilliance of playing an instrument.

1. Confidence

When I first started out with my second instrument (the trumpet) in 7th grade, I was a mess. It seemed like everyone in my section had at least a year of experience ahead of me and it took me a week before I was able to play my first note, but I didn’t let this disadvantage get the best of me. Through practice and time, I was able to really excel. Grade 9 was by far my best year. I earned some solos and played the “Last Post” at my school’s Remembrance Day assembly, earning the respect of my peers and teachers. I’ll admit, my shakiness still gets the best of me in times of intense stress, but these experiences have allowed me to feel more confident in my own abilities. Learning an instrument and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will aid your self esteem and confidence immensely.

2. Trust & Friendships

I’d be lying if I said most of my friends aren’t in band, because they are. Stereotype us for being in band if you will, but it’s the best decision I ever made. Learning an instrument and being part of a band requires you to not only trust yourself, but the members of your section and everyone else. Band encourages bonds to be made and I wouldn’t be so close with them if it weren’t for band. Trips like band tour especially are great opportunities for forming friendships and making great memories. Additionally, you really become a team player and learn to work in group environments.

3. Opportunities

As if I can stress this enough! If it weren’t for Band, I wouldn’t have traveled to Edmonton and Vancouver on two separate band tours, been in the presence of amazing clinicians who’ve taught me lessons regarding music and life, gained invaluable skills and become a more self-aware person in general. Music offers invaluable experiences and opportunities and they’re waiting to be discovered.

4. Better Organization / Time Management Skills / Responsibility

Learning how to play an instrument requires you to manage your time and keep organized. Currently I’m in Concert Band, Strings Class, Instrumental Music, Jazz Band and the Calgary Stetson Showband, and organization is a must if I am to get through the next school year. Through the years, I’ve been told a band is only as good as the weakest player is, and so organizing my time to practice my music is required in order for us as a whole to succeed. And honestly, who doesn’t love feeling organized?

5.  Provides an Outlet for Expression & Relieves Stress

There are countless ways to express yourself and release stress nowadays, but my particular favourite way is through the arts. Often I’ll vent through poetry or sit down and play piano for awhile. Music therapy has been useful for treating children and teens with autism, depression and other disorders. It’s a sure fire way to express yourself in a healthy manner, and you can have fun doing it too!

6. Exposure to Cultural History

Music has taught me a lot. Without the many influences in my life, I wouldn’t be familiar with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, and Chet Baker to name a few. Even before music lessons, my father has played a big influence in informing me of the music greats. Band class can really expose you to a number of different genres and musicians. I wasn’t much of a Jazz person until I joined it back in 7th grade, and while it’s still not my favourite genre to listen to, I have an immense appreciation for it, whereas prior to 7th grade I was a completely different person.

Annie Davidson Opera – Review

1443755901168461690652Last Saturday, I was offered the opportunity to watch the Cowtown Opera production of Annie Davidson – special thanks to Cowtown Opera for the tickets & encouraging youth to attend!

After moving to Calgary, Annie successfully led the Calgary Women’s Literary Club and mobilized the community and financial support that would build Calgary’s first library. This opera focuses on her, and her struggle to reach her dream of the library.

The opera was performed at Festival Hall, a cozy venue, close to downtown. It was a great place for the opera, and it gave it a really intimate feel, rather than performing somewhere like Jack Singer.

I loved the opera. The singers were amazing, and also all Albertan. There was an excellent live orchestra, composed of a keyboard, flute, violin, viola, double bass, and percussion. The music was very well composed, very fun, and portraying some of the characters that the opera had.

The small venue allowed the performers to walk along the aisles, really creating the atmosphere for the opera, and really making you feel involved. They also had audience participation, such as asking people to sign a petition to build the library, which made the opera alot more engaging. The opera had some modern twists too, such as the mention of Fifty Shades of Grey (don’t worry, that’s the only adult book in the opera), and I’m giving bonus points for mentioning Les Miserables.

12038661_991312684266225_6912596618281143965_o

All in all, it was a great opera. Kudos to Cowtown Opera for making such an interesting, yet informative opera.

If you want to see this opera, Cowtown Opera is doing several pop up shows in a few libraries. The dates are as follows:

Saturday – October 17 – 11 AM at Shawnessy & 2 PM at Signal Hill

Sunday – October 18 – 12:30 PM at Crowfoot & 3:30 PM at Fish Creek

Saturday – October 24 – 11 AM at Country Hills & 2 PM at Nose Hill

So if you’re interested, or you just want to see the irony of people singing loudly in a library, make sure to check it out?

Making the Most of Fall 2015

0

Can you smell it in the air…? The subtle waft of pumpkin and cinnamon spice is emerging once again and with it, so is fall. I hope I’m not the only one who has an unrealistically romanticized image of how fall is supposed to be. As someone who spends the entire year waiting for the season to roll around, only to be disappointed by how quickly it fades, I thought I ought to think of some ways to take advantage of the seasonal delights to fulfill my expectations. Read on to see my tips on how to make the most out the best season of the year.

Visit a Coffee Shop

A book and a nice cup of something warm, isn’t that the ideal fall we’ve all been dreaming for? Though maybe at this time of year your book is likely to be homework, the hum of a coffee shop is one of the best background noises for a focused study session. Some perfectly cosy fall cafes to visit include Vendome Cafe, Analog, MonogramSavour, and La Boulangerie.

Enjoy Fall Flavours

You certainly won’t find me complaining about all abundance of pumpkin-flavoured treats available this time of year. As a shameless lover of the infamous Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks and whatever apple pie spin-offs exists, here are some easy and quick fall dessert recipes that will make you feel the same way.

Go on a Nature Hike

Fish Creek Provincial Park (Image)

It’s perhaps the most beautiful time of year to go out and enjoy the beauty of the mountains before the snow hits. Having been out in K-country recently, I can tell you that the fall colours out there are incomparable, and I would imagine it’s like that for much of the national parks. However, if you’re crunched for time, Fish Creek Park is also alight with yellow, orange, and green and the trails make for a perfect hike, run, or bike ride.

Dress for the Weather Season

I hope it’s not just me, but I find that 80% of my wardrobe is suited for fall/winter, and summer always feels like a scramble for outfits. This just contributes to one of the many reasons why fall is my favourite. It is the perfect time of year to pull out all those mustard, burgundy, and navy pieces, plus, you can get away with jeans, skirts, boots, sweaters, and light jackets. Below are a few outfit combinations, pieces, and general fashion inspirations that are distinctly fall.

Introducing Canadian Music [October]

1. Coeur de pirate

Coeur de pirate is an amazing Francophone singer and songwriter from Montreal. Most of her indie pop songs are in French but she has recorded an album (and more!) of English songs. You can listen to her full albums here!

2. Seaway

Seaway is a pop-punk band from Ontario, formed in 2011. One of their major musical influences is Blink-182 which is seen through Seaway’s upbeat and energetic choruses. Both the instrumentals and vocals are overly amazing but definitely not overwhelming. Check out some songs from their first album ‘Hoser’!

3. Tupelo Honey

Tupelo Honey is an Edmonton based rock band formed in 2004. Their most recent album, ‘Brave New World’ was released in 2014 and features incredible instrumentals and a wide range of different song styles that all fall under the rock genre. If you enjoy listening to heavy/pure rock music, make sure to check out their songs!

Stay tuned for the November edition of ‘Introducing Canadian Music’!

5 Fall Essentials

0

Goodbye flip flops and sweltering heat and hello sweater weather! If you can’t tell, fall is my favourite season, what with all the colourful leaves and pumpkin spice lattes, and hold up! Can we just talk about the pumpkin spice frappe for a minute? It’s insane! But back to my favourite season: fall. Fall to me is comforting candles, twinkle lights, HALLOWEEN!!, and beautiful scenery. I love to curl up with a book in a cute sweater or grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte with my friends after school, as I’m sure everyone else does. In all, fall is pretty amazing, but with these essentials, you can up the ante and make this fall unforgettable.

1. Warm, Cosy Sweaters!

The title makes this sound really grandma-ish, but I assure you there is nothing more comfy and cute than a nice sweater. Sweaters are the essential fall clothing item, if not one of them, and you’ll catch many sporting them in the fall and all the way through the winter because they are cute, comfy and chic. These go with a nice pair of leggings, jeans, or virtually anything. I like to style them over leggings or with a cute black skirt, but no matter which way you wear it, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll look pretty stylish.

tumblr_m9y4lnJCF71r3sm6co1_500Source

2. Candles

My mom is a witness of my utter Bath & Body Works candle addiction.. It’s not my fault I go in looking for two, find there’s a sale, and come out with four… Really! Okay, well I guess I’m partly guilty. But nonetheless, I love to turn on my twinkle lights and light a nice candle (Don’t even get me started on Marshmallow Fireside!) because I really don’t know what else screams fall.. Honestly. If you walk into my room, you’ll notice I have several candles on standby and it’ll probably smell like one of the candles, but I can’t help it. Fireplaces have always screamed cosy to me, but since I don’t have one, I make do with my candles. Bath & Body Works has a large range of fall themed candles now, but you can buy candles anywhere. If you don’t have one already, I recommend getting one because candles are the best!

3. Good Music

I don’t know about you, but the thought of shuttling back home with no tunes doesn’t leave a smile on my face. The 2nd half of 2015 so far has been filled with great releases ranging from breakthrough artist Halsey’s “Badlands” to former The Voice star Melanie Martinez’s debut album “Crybaby”. If you’re in need of some new songs to listen to, Songza or even the discover option on Spotify are great ways to discover your new favourite artist.

4. Movies

October is my favourite month of the year, and for good reason. Not only is it full of fun seasonal activities to do (like pumpkin picking!), but it’s also sweater weather, which makes it perfect for staying inside and watching that marathon of Halloween Town. Grab your blankets, hot cocoa and settle in for a good flick or two while you still can, because sadly it’s not everyday where you can turn on the TV and see Halloween movie marathons.

tumblr_mugtxy7T7U1snxx9ao1_500Source

5. Seasonal Decorations

Okay, this might just be, but I really don’t feel festive if I don’t have my jack-0-lantern string lights strewn all over my room. Seasonal decorations can help make a room cozy and get you in the fall spirit without the hassle of going out and doing stuff on those days where you just wanna stay inside. I’m always super eager to get my decorations up and once they’re up, I don’t wanna take them down based on the happy, cosy feeling they give me.

NYFW Fashion Edit: Calvin Klein SS16

{Source}

For the last installment of YAA’s NYFW Fashion Edit, I present to you a brand that has taken 2015 by storm. The definition of fashion and what we perceive as trendy has changed over the years, but Calvin Klein is always keeping up with the times. With celebrity endorsements from David Beckham, Justin Bieber, and Kendall Jenner, it’s unlikely you haven’t seen this fashion house on social media.

Calvin Klein’s SS16 collection is modest, yet elegant. The neutral colors and easy patterns with unique fabric on the runway is a brilliant extension of what the brand stands for. It’s safe to say that Calvin Klein is so popular because of their ability to make timeless apparel.

{Source}

The use of jewelry to accentuate the body of the dresses help captivate and make spectators realize the importance of simplicity. Even without eccentric designs, Calvin Klein still makes a bold statement with this collection.

Until the next NYFW, check out the #mycalvins hashtag for all things Calvin Klein! We’ll definitely be seeing more from this brand as their outlet continues to grow.

What would you tell your younger self?

Every individual has their own journey, their own obstacles that they have had to overcome and their own share of successes too. While the present and future may seem overwhelming, it’s comforting to reflect on how far you’ve come. What lessons were you taught along the way and how have you grown as a person?  Just as how plants are watered by storm and nurtured by sunshine, the negative and positive experiences in your past has allowed you to become who you are today.

Life happens so gradually that the details are often missed. You change every single day, but the change is so imperceptible that it doesn’t become apparent until you reflect on it later. It’s a hidden thread that runs through all the seemingly unrelated series of events in your life. Hindsight is 20/20, and you’re now able to see how one event led to the next, how all the puzzle pieces fit together. Yet in the moment, you can’t have known where taking that diverging path in the yellow woods would’ve taken you.

cchapter1

Life is a book that is continuously being written every day. The protagonist will have their own unique conflicts, be it internal or external. By the end of it, the protagonist will have completed the hero’s journey and undergone significant character development. I am the protagonist of my own story. I have been through many chapters in my life and each day I get 24 hours to explore my story a bit more. Yet there are still many pages left that I cannot skip ahead to find out what happens. That is how life is: the unchangeable nature of the past, the fleeting time of the present, and the intriguing mystery of the future.

As I approach my final year of high school, I feel like it’s important to reflect on my journey so far. This is what I would tell my younger self:

It’s okay to go outside of my comfort zone, because it can be very rewarding. I shouldn’t be so worried about things, because many of the situations that I picture in my head never actually come true. It’s better to have a group of close friends rather than a large group of acquaintances that I only have a shallow relationships with. I should be concerned about my future, but at the same time, realize that life isn’t linear anyways and I should go with the flow. Things will work out in the end.

______________________________________________________________________

Here’s what other people had to say to this question: “If you travel back in time, what would you tell your younger self?

“I would tell my younger self that being in a sport is important but not to not let it run your life. Family, friends and ultimately school are more important and being in the present is key to living a happy life.” – Sarah (YAA)

“I would tell myself, ‘God is the whole point! Stop putting him in a box!‘” – Maddie (YAA)

“I would tell myself that silence was never the right option. I thought that being silent and not giving them any attention, would make them stop, but that’s what would eventually drive me to a point where I was miserable, and I felt really alone. But I also stayed silent, in hopes that if I didn’t tell anyone, that the problems would disappear, but my problems just kept cutting me more until I decided that silence was not the answer.” – Ronica (YAA)

“I would tell myself that life is not about pleasing others. You’ll NEVER be happy if you are too busy worrying about others judging you. And most importantly, you don’t need black or white answers, embrace grey. Grey is beautiful. Grey is the truth.” – Malika (YAA)

“I’d tell myself that it’s not worth my time thinking about people who probably don’t think about me. What IS worth your time is surrounding yourself around the people and things you love. Do not dwell on the past when the future is all around you.” – Emily (YAA)

Future quotes (6)

Get the job done and you’ll be okay.” – Darin

“Something I would tell my younger self is that the struggles you’re going to go through (physically, mentally, emotionally) do not define the kind of person you are. You’re doing everything you need to be doing, and I don’t expect anything more than what you can handle. Keep doing what you’re doing because it will pay off in the future.” – Anonymous

“I wouldn’t want to change anything about my life, other than my mental and physical health. It would save me a lot of trouble.  Yeah, I still needed to learn the lessons that I did so I wouldn’t want to change anything. I would give myself advice on how to cope with mental illness (depression and anxiety). And I would make sure I got it across that weight or physical appearance doesn’t matter, and that I just need to focus on being healthy. Eating healthy, not wasting money on junk food and not skipping out on opportunities to be active. If I had to say anything at all, I think life has conditioned me the way I’ve needed it to.” – Anonymous

short-quotes-lesson4

“I would tell myself to be myself and to be more independent when I had the chance. I realized now that if I am scared and hiding who I am, it’s not worth it for others around me. Only some people get to see the real me which means I am only comfortable with them and not in other situations. I’m normally someone who would go around and talk to people, not hide myself and be shy because I was with someone specific. So I would definitely tell myself not to hide behind the shadows of others. I would be more independent so that I can move forward easier and be more confident with what I have to offer. I also would be able to be self-reliant and self-sufficient in my school life and in my family life.” – Nabila

“I would tell myself to not be afraid of expressing my opinion and staying true to my beliefs. The beauty of the world is the diversity of opinions and thoughts. Fitting in should be frowned upon, instead you should celebrate yourself and explore the unique qualities within.” – Ilya

“First of all, I would tell myself to smarten up and stop hanging out with basement friends.* I would then try to explain all of the stuff I know now about cosmology and astrophysics because I could advance even further than I have now in my understanding of the universe.” – Colton

*Basement friends are friends that are discouraging and bring you down, as opposed to “balcony friends” who support you and help you grow.

happy-quotes-2

Love and let love in. It’s okay to be cautious and protect yourself from the hate just remember to not protect yourself from the love as well.” – Armina

“If I could go back in time, I’d tell my younger self to not worry so much about what everybody around you is doing. Try out as many things as possible even if you look stupid doing it. You never know who or what you might fall in love with.” – Anonymous

“Time is a resource, treat it as such. Feel free to try new things and more importantly fail. Also, compounding interest can make you a lot of money if you plan ahead.” – Anonymous

Love is stupid. Leaps of faith are dangerous, but fun.” – Anonymous

I would tell my younger self to not try so hard to fit in. I spent a lot of my childhood trying to get into what I thought was the “cool crowd” that I feel like I didn’t get to genuinely enjoy myself. I let the words of insignificant people impact the way I viewed myself and the decisions I made. Now when I look back, I feel pretty pathetic for allowing people to treat me the way they did. I should have surrounded myself with better people who radiated good energy, instead of sticking around negativity that only hindered my mental growth.” – Anonymous

kindlovingwords_may2014_living_1

“A lot of things, starting off with don’t believe everything that everyone says. Listen with your ears but not with your heart is what I think of now. Everyone deserves to be loved and have kindness come their way. There is already so much negativity in the world, no need to contribute to it. And I deserve to be loved too. If I don’t like the way someone is treating me, then I have the right to tell them. I have the right to stand up for myself and to voice my thoughts and opinions.

Procrastination is a way of life. You know how hard it is to stay up every night, barely getting any sleep finishing up assignments, so why not just get them finished? If you don’t understand it, move on to other work and come back to it. If you still don’t get it, your teachers will be here in the morning to help, but you also have to make that effort to get there for them to help you.

Everything has a consequence. You can’t justify your wrongdoings, so apologize. Words hurt just as much as actions, so what you say and do will come back and bite you in the ass. For every word, choice, and action, no matter how big or small, there is a consequence.” – Anonymous

“I was looking through my old journal entries and it occurred to me just how pessimistic I was about myself. So if I could go back in time, I’d tell my younger self that all those things I don’t like about myself are either not true or not worth a single second of my time worrying about. It’s so dumb, the things I wrote. I want to grab her by the collar and be like “You are so much more capable than you think!” and then slap her upside the head a few times.

I said things like, I’m not talented or good at anything, no one likes me, my personality sucks, I don’t look nice, etc. But the thing that hurt to read the most was that I thought I would never change, that I’d always be good for nothing and whatnot. I want to tell her to believe in herself more. I think I could have done so much more back then had I been less doubtful about my abilities. And I guess I’d tell her to believe in her future self a bit more too. I actually turned out half decent haha. TAKE THAT, DUMB MIDDLE SCHOOL ME.” – Naoreen

Life is a train ride

0

Life is a train ride.

Everything is so exciting when you first get on. You don’t understand why so many people complain. You’re determined to enjoy this ride.

When you first start moving, there’s a sudden lurch, that’ll throw you forward. You’ll lose your balance. Probably fall. But the only thing you can do is to stand up, brush yourself off, and continue.

These bumps and lurches are an annoyance, but you soon learn that they are necessary in order for you to get to where you need to be. You start to expect them, and you find support, something to keep you stable during the lurches. They won’t get rid of the bump, but they’ll help you learn how to get through it.

The train will stop in places. You feel stable, and you can finally relax and enjoy where you’ve come to, but sooner or later, the train will start up again. There’s always a lurch. But you’ll be prepared this time.

People will come and go. Some may catch your eye, you might get to know some, but they all have to leave eventually.

You’ll find, however, that you will meet some people over and over again. They’re on the same path as you, and they change from strangers, into familiar faces, into friends.

As you get older, the train ride might not seem as thrilling. You may start to ignore the familiar faces. You may not feel the bumps as much anymore. And there will be new problems. There’s the baby crying in the corner. The woman who always seems to spill her coffee on you. The man who always takes your favourite seat.

You start to understand why so many dislike the commute. And you start to become just like them.

But today, please try to remember what it felt like when you first went on that train. Relive that excitement. Learn to love the train ride once more.

NYFW Fashion Edit: Ralph Lauren SS16

If I had to describe Ralph Lauren’s collection in one word it would be: class. Ralph Lauren is the epitome of the combination between chic and sexy; many ladies and gents with a defined love for fashion are inspired by the brand’s sophisticated taste and elegant style, for it is simply timeless and majestic.

After witnessing a week of fashion (from the comfort of my laptop screen) I was amazed by the unique style and thought each designer brought to their collections at the New York Fashion Week. Nevertheless, having always been a huge Ralph Lauren fan, I couldn’t help myself but to share with you my favourite pieces from the show.

The Dress Collection-Top 5: Awakening Colours, Sexy Over-The-Shoulders, and Dazzling Designs.

 Coat/Jacket Designs: Class, Colour, Chic.

Modern & Trendy Manhattan Wear:

“I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.” ~Ralph Lauren

Many may refer to these designs as fashion and style but I’d like to take it a step forward and refer to it as contemporary art at its finest. Ralph Lauren never fails to impress and has yet again inspired many to love who they are and allow what they wear to be a symbolic representation of what they value. Thank you Ralph Lauren.

Altitude: An Original Poem

This poem was inspired by the desire to just write something after quite a long break from poetry. The process of applying for university can be overwhelming with everyone trying to offer their advice, wanted or unwanted. It is important to have a way to sometimes break free and that’s what this poem is about. Hope you enjoy 🙂

I’m scared to fly high
Because maybe I’ll burn
Or my friends will stand and shoot me
When they find it’s their turn

I’m scared to fly high
Because I don’t want to fall
To be laughed at and called names
How could I stand tall?

I’m scared to fly high
What if I can’t get back down
All I want is stability
Two feet on the ground

I’m scared to fly high
What if it’s not enough?
What if I’m not that strong?
What if I’m not that tough?

But I guess I won’t know
Unless I do try
Unless I spread my wings
And leap to the sky

So maybe I’ll burn
But I’d be close to the sun
Living til last breath
Having some fun

So maybe they’ll shoot me
And shout “come back down!”
Or maybe, like my parents,
They’ll look and they’ll frown

It’s time to grow up
Put away that dream
But please mom and dad
You won’t believe what I’ve seen

It won’t matter to them
But it matters to me
I’ve tasted adventure
Man, it’s good to be free.

Stay free, friends.

A little word on homelessness

Homelessness is a prominent issue, even in very developed countries such as our own. In 2013, there were at least 30 000 homeless people in Canada on any given night. You may think : “Well, it’s their problem. What could I do to help them?” Of course, you could donate food, clothing, and volunteer at homeless shelters, but I think that before all of that, we need to change our perspective on homelessness.
On Sunday Sept 13, I was volunteering with Youth Central at the Parkinson’s SuperWalk, an annual event held to raise money and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. We were doing course marshalling, and I was placed at a tunnel with my friend. We were shining flashlights through the tunnel (ensuring people’s safety) and guiding people to where they needed to go. We were also spreading positivity, cheering people on, and we were having lots of fun.

At first, everyone was very polite and appreciative, thanking us for volunteering, cheering with us, and it was just a really positive environment.
After a couple hours, when the walk started to come to it’s end, my friend and I decided to sit down. We were still shining our flashlights, encouraging people, telling them where to go, and doing everything we were doing before. But I instantly noticed how people started treating us differently. People were quickly walking past, ignoring us, no-one acknowledged that we were volunteers, no-one spoke to us, and we got these funny looks.

I was pretty confused at first. Why were they suddenly treating us so much differently? But then it hit me. I turned to my friend and said: “They think we’re homeless.”
Naturally, we were both a little shocked at first, but I honestly wouldn’t blame them if they did think we were homeless. We were wearing baggy volunteer shirts, slouched against the inside of a tunnel while it rained outside, and we had our slightly dirty backpacks on the ground beside us.

A lot of people walked by, trying really hard to ignore us. We got some of the most disgusted looks that I’ve ever seen, which was hilarious, but also slightly hurtful. Some parents even shielded their kids from us.
It wasn’t the fact that they thought we were homeless, or the disgusted looks that really hurt me. What really hurt me, is that no-one stopped to help, or ask us if we needed help.
This kind of stuck with me throughout the day. My friend and I are both young, and we both appear to be young. Yet out of so many people that walked by, not one stopped to offer us help, or ask us if we were okay.
I was quite upset about that, but later, as I sat in my room, completing my homework, I realized something.

I was disappointed that no-one helped us, but I asked myself: how many times have I stopped to ask someone if they needed anything, or to offer them a hand. Furthermore, how many times have you ignored a man sitting on the streets asking for change. How many times have you purposely changed directions to avoid a group of homeless people? How many times have you been shielded from your parents from a homeless person?
A lot of people think that it’s the homeless person’s fault. That it’s because they took drugs, or drank some alcohol, got addicted, and now they’re out on the streets. But we all make mistakes, and the only difference between us and them is that they happened to make more serious mistakes.
You don’t have to go up to someone who’s homeless and buy them an apartment. All it takes for you, is to stop, give some change, and smile. Maybe split them a part of your sandwich. That may seem like a tiny gesture to you, but to them, it’s that push they need to get back up on their feet and go for that second chance.

Think about it.

NYFW Fashion Edit: Public School RTW SS16

0

This post is a part of Youth Are Awesome’s coverage of New York Fashion Week 2015.

In just handful of years, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne have seen incredible development of their brand. Public School has garnered top industry praise, winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2013, the CFDA Award for Menswear Design in 2014 and the first-ever International Woolmark Prize for menswear in 2015.

Known for their intelligently designed monochromatic streetwear, Chow and Osbourne imbued their urban ensembles with a refreshing tranquil sensibility for Public School‘s RTW SS16 presentation, marrying billowing high-fashion silhouettes with technical athletic elements.

Tones of black, white, and navy set the foundation, while intermittent streaks of alizarin red and pale blue composed a striking conversation on balance and compatibility. Gritty hardware taken directly from Public School’s grounded menswear collections cinched in the cascades of silky, effeminate gowns. Sporty sandals brought a sense of gravity and order to the fluid fabrics swelling from models’ dropped waist lines, while thick cable-knit sweaters and mesh vests postured some restraint against the generously cut liquid trousers. The collection exhaled an aura of oceanic quietude; soft, supple waves nestling up to the shore, rippling fabrics undulating in opposition to the models’ movements.

“This girl has grown up, this girl has traveled a bit and has come back home. You see her picking up pieces on her travels and coming back home but she’s always the New York City girl at heart. She’s been around the world and back. She has spent time in Europe and Asia but ultimately her home is here in New York City. She’s come back with a new perspective, enlightened and liberated in a way. That’s how we felt designing the collection.”

– Dao-Yi Chow

I particularly enjoy the practicality of this collection — the fabrics ebb and flow with a certain effortlessness, and work as nice transitional pieces. The type of spring ensemble you could either be seen lounging in at a pale Cuban beach with a cool drink in your hand, or lazing around on a Sunday afternoon at home in satiny comfort.

NYFW Fashion Edit: BCBGMAXAZRIA SS16

0

Since its inception in 1989, BCBGMAXAZRIA has been sophisticated, yet accessible. I remember a few years ago when I found one of their shirts at Winners and felt really upscale walking around in it after I inevitably bought it. Founder and CEO Max Azria has strived to bring the fashion of his hometown of Paris to North American women since moving to California over 25 years ago. The SS16 collection brings together flowy 70s silhouettes, bold and daring prints, chic and creative layering and a So-Cal vibe inspired by the state Max Azria and his wife and Chief Creative Officer Lubov have come to know and love.

I’m not a huge fan of mixing prints and having a lot of colours in one outfit, but the colours here are slightly muted and the patterns bold yet subdued. I love the dress on the left, as well as the fringed moccasin sandals, but I just can’t bring myself to like bucket hats. They remind me too much of this denim hat my mom used to wear to the beach when I was about three. No hate to bucket hats, but they just don’t do it for me.

My overall favourite look from the whole show is the one on the far left here. I adore it as a whole, but the pieces that stand out the most to me are the bad and the sweater. Simple yet structured, this periwinkle purse is in the cross-body style I simply cannot live without and is high-fashion yet does not look out of place in the normal world. The sweater captivates the eye and has visual interest without looking too busy.

All in all, this collection is a bit too far out for my taste and doesn’t encapsulate a lot of the feminine appeal that I tend to look for. However, I really love how versatile many of the pieces are on their own and could fit into virtually every woman’s wardrobe, whether you’re a celebrity A-lister or a student. The muted colours allow to mix prints and textures without being visibly overdone. It’s edgy yet elegant, and I can appreciate it and say that there are definitely a few pieces I could see myself in.
