The 5 Best Last Minute Christmas Gift Ideas

0

Tis the holiday season. Sure, “Christmas isn’t just about the gifts”. But in reality, the presents do play a big part in Christmas celebration. Whether you’ve been invited to a last minute Christmas party, or you got the invite for the party two months before hand, and still managed to leave the gift buying until an hour before the gathering. Maybe you’re on your way to a Christmas party, with a well thought out gifts in hand. You suddenly you realize that you forgot about someone and need to craft something up for that guy, really fast. Whatever the situation may be, you need last minute presents. And you need them fast! You need gifts that are easy to pull off, affordable and can be ready asap!

#1

Cash, But More Thoughtful

Level of Effort: ⅕

Level of Gift Quality: ⅗

Cash is a simple gift. It says I’m giving you the freedom to enjoy any gift you’d like! But I also might not be putting much effort into your gift. I either genuinely thought you’d like money more than something I’d choose or I just grabbed a twenty I found in my pocket. Then put it in a card I got on the way here. Some don’t mind that last message, especially if they add in an extra ten bucks more than everyone else did, they’ll seem extra thoughtful even with the lack of thought put into it. But you don’t need to give out extra money in gifts because they are effortless.

An easy solution to the whole “no effort” thing, is to get a gift card. It shows that you are giving the gift receiver freedom for them to choose whatever they like, while it also shows some effort, since you had to actually be in a store to get the gift card. (Even if you just grabbed it while shopping for yourself.)

If gift cards aren’t your thing, but you still like the idea of gifting cash. You can learn a simple way to fold your bills into origami that looks complicated. But in reality, you could do it on the way to the party, in the car, or even in the bathroom at the party, right before gift exchange time, if you’re really desperate. Don’t forget to tell everyone how difficult, and time consuming it took to do such unique artwork. Really emphasize the remarkable artistic talent it took to pull off such a gift.

Personalized Candle

Level of Effort: ⅖

Level of Gift Quality: ⅗

The one thing that makes a gift, really valuable, is making the gift yourself. This shows that you really care about a person, and that you put a lot of thought and effort into making something special for them. (Even though you didn’t, you probably found the idea on a blog, like this one, when searching for something that only takes 15 minutes to make, as a gift). Now, this is a last minute gift, so you have to find a really easy craft, that you can make with supplies you already have, that actually looks decent and isn’t a hand turkey you drew on construction paper. (Although those under the age of six should take advantage of the fact that they can pass with those crafts!)

Now this one is a bit of a cheat to be called a DIY. Technically you didn’t make the gift itself per-say. You added on to the gift, making it your own! You can grab a scented candle from a local store. Any candle will work. (Bonus points for choosing a scented candle. You can create a big elaborate story about how the scent correlates to the person, and really represents the relationship between you and said person. With the right wording, you can make it really meaningful!)

Candles are great, but the gift should be more personalized to you! Sticker paper is easy to find in many stores. This paper allows you to make any image or word into a sticker. All you have to do is take the peel paper, put it in your printer, and print anything on it just like with any other paper. That simple!

Afterwards, you can cut out your sticker, and place it on the candle, replacing the original labels on the front and lid, with your own. I’d tell you to be creative with what stickers to use, but there really is no time to put any more thought into this gift! So, you can stick on a picture of yourself, a picture of your pet, a candle pun, some cute lettering, or you can just search for cute stickers on Pinterest, and there will be many options. This has got to be one of the easiest gift DIYs!

#3

A Memory Jar

Level of Effort: ⅖

Level of Gift Quality: ⅗- ⅘

This one is a great present for friends. Go around your home and collect small items from times when you’ve hung out with your friend. This could be a movie ticket, a rock from when you went on the beach with your friend, some cute Polaroids of you and your friend or a glow stick from a sleepover. You can even find little toys or trinkets that could represent inside jokes. It could be anything you’ve kept around from times with your friend. Search your room and you’ll be surprised by how many little things you’ve kept over time!

Then grab the nicest piece of paper you can find and a nice pen or marker. Number the items you’ve chosen for the memory jar, write what the item is, and a short description of why the item is there, or what it’s for. You only have to write one or two sentences per item. For example, you could write “#3 Movie Ticket, We went to the movies to watch Frozen 2 and had such a blast. I laughed so hard that soda came out of my nose”.

You don’t have to write much because when you are gifting this person the jar, you can read the paper out loud, and add more details that don’t need to be written down, while talking, which saves a lot of time. The delivery of the message is key. Make it sound like a meaningful speech about all the amazing memories with this person. The letter is the easiest step, but the most time consuming. It’s worth it to use the tiniest bit more effort to find two or more pens/markers to change up the color for every item. It’s a really small detail that can make a big difference.

After that, you just need to find a jar to put all the small items in, and tie the list onto the jar with ribbon. Then you have a full memory jar! This is great to show your appreciation for someone, and recall all the amazing times you guys have had together. Now all that’s left is practicing your improve on the way there, so think up some good ideas for the speaking portion! When executed well, this can be an amazing gift!

#4

Candy Stash

Level of Effort: ⅗

Level of Gift Quality: ⅘

A candy stash is a simple yet memorable gift. No crafting involved, yet you really can’t go wrong with gifting candy. You can take a quick stop to the Dollar Store before you go to your Christmas gathering. There, you will find everything you need for this gift, that can be easily put together in the car before arriving. In the store, if you’re on a time crunch, don’t forget that you’re on a mission! A quick trip can take as little as five minutes but be careful not to get distracted by all of the stores wonders, as you have no time to waste!

Head to the candy aisle and grab a bunch of candies that you know the person likes. You probably already know this persons favorite candies. If not, grab one or two items from different candy subcategories. You can never go wrong with a chocolate bar.  Also grab an item that’s gummy, a hard candy choice, maybe some marshmallow treats, and don’t forget to grab your all time favorite candy. The person might not like said candy, and will want to share, you never know!

Next, Dollar Stores always have a birthday section. Rather than grab a gift bag, grab a gift box. Buy some colorful tissue paper, you can stuff the box with it once you’re in the car. There, you’ll place the candies in the box neatly so they look presentable. You can stick a card on the box lid, preferably a card with some sort of sweet theme on the front, to give them a little hint as to what’s inside and make it more aesthetic. And there you have it, an easy gift that will satisfy any candy lovers! Keep in mind that this gift is best when given to children.

Fun Coupons> “Your Gift is Ordered But Hasn’t Arrived”

Level of Effort: 0/5

Level of Gift Quality: 5/5

If all else fails, and you’re really late on getting gifts, so much so that you might actually be in the bathroom of a Christmas party right now, desperately searching for something you can come up with on the spot, then there’s still something for you. This could be used in even the most desperate of times! You can always scribble up on a little piece of paper, some cute little hearts and write ‘coupon’. This could be a “Clean the house” coupon, a coupon for “An Hour of Foot Massages” for your significant other, or my personal favorite; a fun coupon.

Fun Coupons are an incredible way to tell someone that, instead of a physical gift, you’re taking them out somewhere. This seems really sweet to the person, since you will be spending quality time with them, rather than buy them something materialistic. And this way, you don’t have to show the proof of tickets to the place, or really any information about where you’ll be taking them to. Really, you don’t even have to tell them where you’re taking them to at all!  You could call it a surprise! All you need to do, is make the little coupon paper and chose a random date for when the coupon will be used. You can decide what the fun activity will be, or just tell them that it’s a surprise.

Of course, later you will have to come up with something, but it’s perfect for desperate situations. Plus, that’s a problem for your future self! Just don’t let procrastination get the best of you next time! So, after Christmas, you can deal with finding something to do. A smart idea for choosing what the activity will be, is to have them guess what it is. Once you hear something you think you’d be able to do, and would enjoy, act shocked that they guessed right. That’s a guarantee for you both to like the activity!

Fun Coupons are incredible. It’s a genius idea, really. A lot of people say “I bought you a gift, it just hasn’t arrived yet.” This is true in some cases, but in other cases is the most lame excuse ever. A coupon for something fun convinces the person that you have already made arrangements for said activity and had it all planned out! If you aren’t so late with gifting, this would still be a good gift idea, for planned fun, too! It shows you care, and they will have something to look forward to, that sticks out from the rest of the gifts. Fun Coupons are truly the glue to last minute gifting, that is done in the actual last minute! The glue to all Christmas gifting!

Whatever your reasoning for your last minute gifting, you should now be all set. Enjoy your Christmas without worrying about the gifts. Give the greatest gifts as possible (even on a time crunch). So that in return you’ll be getting the best gifts! Make your loved ones feel special with gifts, because even if they were put together quickly, you put effort into reading this blog so you could get them something. It shows you care, which is the only thing that matters! It makes the present aspect of the holiday season seem less materialistic! So enjoy time with your loved ones rather than have to worry about the gifts! Merry Christmas!

A Christmas Carol – The Spirit of Giving

0

This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to watch Theatre Calgary’s newest addition of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens; with a new script written by Caglary playwright, Jeffery Simon Brown. For the twenty sixth consecutive year, Stephan Hair continued to play the character of Ebenezer Scrooge, but this time with a brand new set, costumes, and props!

I’ve seen a Christmas Carol a few times at Theatre Calgary, and being able to see the transformation in not only Scrooge, but the audience as well, always make me happy! Some of my favourite moments from this year’s play included feeling like I was in London in 1843 as we went on a journey with the Spirit of Christmas Past, Mr. Fezziwig’s important speech, and the costume of the Spirit of Christmas Present.

Above all though, I came out of the play with a reminder of the importance of giving. At the end, the cast even stood in the lobby encouraging the audience to donate “Toonies for Turkeys” to go towards the Calgary Food Bank whose demand for services has increased 17% just this year.

The story makes the contrast in the quality of life between the poor and the rich in London in the 1840’s very clear. In Calgary, in 2019, the class differences are by no means as extreme as they were at the time of this novel. One of the things our country aims to do is give each citizen a good quality of life and provide them with basic opportunities. In Canada, no matter your gender, race or socio-economic class, you are given access to good quality education, healthcare and other required services.

Yet, this is not to say, that we don’t still see class differences. Especially in the current economic downturn where there are pressures of mental health, poverty and addiction weighing down on many people here in our city - this is becoming more prevalent. Many of our neighbours are struggling this holiday season. This year, let us continue to make this city a better place for all.

The Calgary Herald Christmas Fund has made it easy for all Calgarians to do so. This is the 28th year it has provided funding to local charities that help to address the critical problems Calgarians face everyday raising over $27 million. This year donors are able to choose which of the selected agencies they’d like to support. This year’s selected agencies include the Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary, Calgary Seniors Resource Society, Fresh Start Recovery Centre, I Can for Kids, Made by Momma and YWCA Calgary.

Of course, if one isn’t in the position to donate financially, there are multiple other ways to give time and resources in Calgary.

  • Local media stations all contributed to the Morning of Giving Initiative which asks citizens to donate new, unwrapped gifts that are then loaded onto Calgary Transit buses and delivered to selected Calgarians on Christmas Eve.
  • The Calgary Drop in Centre uses the #BeSomeoneYYC Campaign focusing on the importance of everyone having strong support systems and encouraging Calgarians to be someone for those that have no one. As part of this, this holiday season they have been accepting: baked cookies for their clients to decorate, socks stuffed with personal hygiene and warm supplies, and handmade holiday cards
  • Canadian Blood Services is also recruiting donations this month at multiple pop up locations around Calgary. Only 4% of Canadians donate blood, yet every 60 seconds, at least one person needs blood.

Finally, there is something contagious about even just going about your community with smile. Not only does it influence your mood, but can also impact the happiness and quality of life of everyone you pass.

So this holiday season, try giving a little extra. Whether it be your financial resources, your time, or even just your smile. In the end, it all adds up. And, as Tiny Tim would say, “God bless us, every one!”

Wishing everyone a lovely holiday season filled with family, friends, and loved ones!

8 Christmas Customs From Around the World

0

Christmas is a holiday filled with joy for families around the world. Over time, different areas have come to develop very different customs for how they celebrate Christmas around the world.

1. Kentucky for Christmas

On Christmas Eve, hundreds of people would line up in front of Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants all over Japan to buy meals. This tradition was kickstarted by the fast-food restaurant food campaign in 1974, with the aim of increasing sales during the holidays. The Japanese slogan “Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!” or Kentucky for Christmas was created during this time, and this custom is still practiced today.

2. Lucky Number on Christmas

Starting from the end of the 19th century, Spain’s national lottery would reveal its biggest prize of the year before Christmas. This prize is often referred to as “El Gordo” or “The Fat One”. Each year, the revealing of the winner of this lottery is an event the entire country watches out for, with every media platform reporting on it. On the 22nd of December, people who have bought the lottery would watch the revealing of the winner together. Traditionally, a choir composed of 22 students would sing the winning lottery number the entire country’s people are anticipating out loud together, and bring to a lucky someone, a life-changing Christmas present.

3. Hide the Brooms!

Every Christmas in Norway, each family would hide away their brooms. No, they have nothing against cleaning. They do this because they are afraid that witches would visit the Earth on Christmas Eve and steal their brooms so that they can fly in the skies!

4. Krippenmarket

Starting from November and all the way through into Christmas, you can visit Venice for its Traditional Christmas market, known as Krippenmarket. Going back as far as 1298, the Christmas market located on Rathausplatz would hold 150 separate venders, arranged in perfect order. During this busiest time of the beautiful city, you can take Christkindle Express through the entire city to explore the wonders Venice’s Christmas.

5. Christmas Spiders

In Ukraine, Christmas trees are decorated with (wait for it…) SPIDERS! These are very realistic ornaments, made into the shape of spiders or spider webs. These ornaments are believed to bring good luck according to an ancient legend. The legend goes, a long long time ago; there was a poor girl who could not afford to decorate the family’s Christmas tree. The next morning, when she woke up, she found that her tree was covered in spider webs. The sunshine hit the spiderwebs at various angles, giving it an oddly beautiful, golden shine. Other countries such as Poland and Germany believe that finding spider webs on Christmas trees brings good luck for the coming year.

6. Santa’s Mailbox

Many kids have written their Christmas wishes to Santa as a letter. But these letters aren’t simply a way for parents to find out what their children want for Christmas. They can actually be sent to get a reply! As long as you send the letter before Decembre 16th, in one of 30 different languages, including Braille, you are guaranteed a reply. The address is “Santa Claus, North Pole H0H 0H0, Canada”, no stamp needed! Aren’t we cool, Canadians?

7. The Star’s Cue

In countries like Ukraine and Poland, presents are opened at specific times. The youngest child of the family must stare at the night sky on Christmas Eve and watch for the appearance of the first star. Once they see the first star, they have received the cue to begin opening presents. On days that are cloudy, somebody will set the correct time for opening presents.

8. Skating on Christmas

Caracas is probably the coolest place to spend Christmas. People here do not walk to Christmas markets or to churches. Instead, they rollerskate there. Many streets are closed off on Christmas Eve so that people can skate smoothly to their destinations.

Are Esports Compatible with High School?

1

Esports is a billion-dollar industry that is growing rapidly. Youth are presented with countless opportunities in an industry that didn’t even exist at the beginning of this short century. Professional esports athletes are making salaries comparable to athletes in other professional sports. Esports organizations are being valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Companies are seeing esports as a legitimate investment, marketing or otherwise. Despite this, there is still a reluctance to expose youth to esports. There is still a negative stigma attached to video games.

Many see video games as this evil, addicting students and pulling them away from their studies and social life. This perception exists for good reason. Because it is largely true. Playing games can pull students away from their studies. Often, playing games leads students to become uninterested in their educational success. Furthermore, it is often a lonely experience, sitting at a desk in front of a monitor for countless hours. Social skills are definitely not being developed in this setting. Even though these are the experiences of many gamers, they are not inherent to gaming itself. With minor changes in the school system, the impact that gaming has on students could become positive rather than negative. This is especially true with esports.

What are esports? Are there opportunities?

Esports are “electronic sports”, A form of structured competition between players of video games. Esports competitions are popular events, often streamed to millions of people around the world. This industry is one that has had explosive growth in the past few years. Viewership has been growing 10% annually for the past few years. There is no doubt that this is a new section of the entertainment industry. Like anything new, esports can be controversial.

Defining competitive video games as a sport is extremely controversial. However, most of this can be attributed to a misunderstanding on the line between athlete and casual player. Just look at traditional sports. An athlete is someone who competes in a structured and competitive way. If I just played pickup basketball every now and then, I would definitely not be considered an athlete. But if I played on a club team, had a training schedule to improve and stay competitive, I would definitely be considered an athlete. If I was good enough, I could even go pro! The same is true for video games. If I were just casually playing with my friends every Sunday afternoon, I am most definitely not an athlete. But if I were on a competitive team, who participated in the structured competition, that’s when that line could be crossed. And in the current state of the esports industry, there’s a real opportunity for those athletes to become professionals.

Esports has become increasingly mainstream as the industry grows. In fact, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) has announced an Olympics sponsored event that will occur leading up to the 2020 summer Olympics. Furthermore, esports has been accepted by many educational institutions around the world. In Denmark, esports in high school is common, as is in many areas of the United States. More than 250 post-secondary schools in the US have esports programs. Many of these schools offer scholarships.

There are opportunities out there in this industry. Unfortunately, many gamers are not exposed to this positive side of esports.

How can schools deal with this modern, changing student demographic?

Youth are very impacted by their schooling. School can have a positive impact on gamers. If schools treated esports as any other sport, many of the issues related to gaming can be corrected. Encouraging competitiveness can create healthy habits for students who often feel unmotivated in their studies. Furthermore, by treating esports as a sport, gamers will have an extra incentive to do well in school (so that they can continue competing). By encouraging competitiveness through a school club, could help develop the social skills of the students who are generally seen as most anti-social. Competitive video games have the potential to facilitate friendships, it just has to be used effectively by the school system. Lastly, an esports club or team would expose countless students to the opportunities in this industry, the millions that are available in scholarships, and the great variety of career opportunities. In some schools, there are already esports clubs.

I have personally experienced the impact of esports in school.  There is an esports club at the high school I attend. It is one of the most positive, supportive, and diverse environments I’ve been in. To me, it’s clear that esports is an area schools need to explore.

10 Foreign Language Shows to Watch this Holiday Season

0

The holidays are now underway, and if you are a student, you might find yourself with a sudden abundance of free time on your hands. Upon opening Youtube, however, you see a similar abundance of red progress bars under the video thumbnails on your home page…

Fear not! If you find yourself running out of content to enjoy, read on for a list of this year’s shows you may not have watched—because they’re not in English. Spanning a variety of genres and themes, these ten shows (in no particular order) to binge over the break are bound to keep you busy.

1.Money Heist

Money Heist, or La Casa de Papel in the original language of Spanish, is currently the most-watched foreign language film on Netflix. A non-linear crime thriller about a group of thieves who take control of the Royal Mint of Spain, Money Heist is sure to keep you captivated with its rich storytelling and compelling characters. The second season of the show was released on Netflix this summer, and there are currently 23 episodes available on the platform.

Rating: TV-MA

Comments: I’ve only just started watching Money Heist myself, but so far it’s very interesting and well-executed. It’s a fairly intense watch that I would recommend for anyone who likes thrillers.

2. Osmosis

Osmosis is a French series that premiered earlier this year as a science fiction web series on Netflix. In Osmosis, a dating app developed in a futuristic Paris matches people with their soulmates by collecting information directly from their brains. The series has been compared to Black Mirror which, likewise, explores the darker, more disturbing side of technology and the delicate balance of its coexistence with humanity.

Rating: TV-MA

Comments: I have not watched Osmosis, but judging by the synopsis, if you enjoy relatively heavy shows that explore an interesting and topical concept, Osmosis is worth checking out.

3. SKY Castle

The highest-rated series of Korean cable television history, SKY Castle tells the story of families living in an exclusive gated neighbourhood for only Korea’s elite. SKY Castle gets its name from the three most prestigious universities in Korea—Seoul National University, Korea University, and Yonsei University—and the families living in the Sky Castle will stop at nothing to ensure that these are the schools their children will attend in the future. You can watch SKY Castle with English subtitles on Viki.

Rating: PG-13

Comments: SKY Castle is at the top of my watch-list because of how many good things I’ve heard about it from my friends! It has a 9.1 rating on MyDramaList and is strongly recommended for people who want a drama that explores a pertinent social issue. I also love the OST, We All Lie

4. The Untamed

The Untamed, or Chen Qing Ling in its original language, is the first Chinese series to make it onto Tumblr’s top dramas of the year list, and it is for good reason. It is a historical martial arts fantasy that tells the story of two young men attempting to uncover the truth behind a series of murders that rock the cultivation world. Based on a popular BL novel, The Untamed is also one of the most daring LGBTQ pieces to come to Chinese screens and stars idols from the groups X-NINE (Xiao Zhan) and UNIQ (Wang Yibo) as the leads. You can find it with subtitles on both Netflix and Youtube.

Rating: TV-14

Comments: I started The Untamed this summer and also read the novel; other than some pacing and acting issues (and some laughably terrible CGI) in the earlier episodes, the story becomes very emotional and compelling and is also remarkably true to its source material. I’d recommend giving it a try if you have a good chunk of time on your hands (it’s fifty episodes and, as mentioned previously, sometimes the pacing has some problems) and you’re looking for something different to try.

5. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories

Midnight Diner is a series that has been around since 2009, but the miniseries Tokyo Stories started in 2016 and saw the release of its second season this year. It is a heartfelt show that explores the profound human connection formed in restaurants and is based on the manga of the same name by Yarō Abe. The customers of the “Midnight Diner,” which is open only from midnight to 7 am and serves whatever its patrons request, bond and share their unique stories. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories is available on Netflix with English subtitles.

Rating: TV-14

Comments: Midnight Diner reminds me of a quaint little mobile game I once played called “Oden Cart,” an idle game in which you operated an oden cart and collected stories from your customers. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I think anyone who likes deeply personal stories will enjoy Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories just as well!

6. Put Your Head On My Shoulder

Put Your Head on My Shoulder is the second Chinese language film to make it onto this list, and it’s perfect for those who are looking for a light-hearted, feel-good romance to enjoy this winter. It tells the story of two university students, an accounting major and a physics genius, who unexpectedly become roommates. Short and sweet, Put Your Head on My Shoulder is full of laughs and moments that will restore your faith in romance. You can also check out its sister drama, A Love So Beautiful. Both are available on Youtube and Netflix with subtitles.

Rating: TV-PG

Comments: I’m not quite done yet but I absolutely adore this drama. My favourite part is when the male lead tries to ask the girl out with a message she needs to decode by doing math; it doesn’t work because math is hard.

7. Dark

First airing in 2017 and picking up its second season this year, Dark is a mystery drama and the first German series created for Netflix originals. It follows the story of a small town as four families search for two children who have gone missing. The town has a troubled, supernatural history, and twisted relationships between characters. If you are looking for an intense mystery to string you along over winter break, Dark is the perfect show for you.

Rating: TV-MA

Comments: I just activated a Netflix gift card and Dark definitely seems to be something worth checking out. Vox calls it “not a show you watch” but “a show you solve,” and if that isn’t promising I don’t know what is.

8. Cable Girls

Cable Girls is the second Spanish language series on this list, and it follows the lives of the four “cable girls,” young women who find employ in Spain’s first national telephone company. Set in the 1920s, Cable Girls is a story of women gaining more equality with men and the compelling personal lives of each of the main characters. The show has a total of 4 seasons and 32 episodes and can be found on Netflix.

Rating: TV-MA

Comments: Like with SKY Castle, I’ve heard many good things about Cable Girls from my friends and plan to check it out if I have the time. It is definitely an enticing concept and will be on my list!

9. Hotel del Luna

Hotel del Luna, one of the most popular Korean series of the year, tells the story of a hotel in Seoul that caters exclusively to ghosts. The CEO of the hotel is cursed to manage it forever as punishment for a crime she cannot remember. First airing in July this summer, Hotel del Luna was an instant hit and stars the singer IU as the CEO, Jang Man Wol. In this show, mystery, drama, romance, and fantasy all intersect and is perfect for those looking for a rich, fantastical story. You can find Hotel del Luna on Viki.

Rating: PG-13

Comments: I have not yet watched the drama but from all accounts, it is a high-quality idol drama that deserves its place among this year’s most successful Korean shows. The original soundtracks for it are also amazing, so I’d definitely recommend checking it out if you’re interested in the fantasy-romance genre!

10. 3%

3% is a Brazilian dystopian series that welcomes its third season this year. Far into the future, most of the world lives in poverty and at utter odds with society’s elite. Each year, however, every twenty-year-old is given a chance to escape poverty to the elites’ paradise through a series of tests, and only three percent of the candidates do so successfully. 3% is highly rated by viewers and the 26 episodes can be found on Netflix.

Rating: TV-MA

Comments: Personally, I’m very interested in this premise and can’t wait for a chance to check it out. I would recommend it for people who are interested in a thriller which, like a few others on this list, explores a pertinent social problem.

This concludes our list; hopefully something on this list interested you, and happy watching!

Coca-Cola and the “Creation” of Christmas Culture

0
Share a Coke with Santa this Christmas!

There he is: jolly old Santa Claus, smiling joyfully, and holding a bottle of Coke for all to see. The legend that “Coca-Cola created Christmas” circulates every holiday season. But the reality of what Coca-Cola did to Christmas is slightly different from the legend. Instead of creating a culture out of thin air, Coca-Cola combined the most nostalgic and romanticized moments of Christmas culture in the past, then mass-distributed these moments to its large audience. Coke did not make Christmas; it used our feelings and memory to popularize it.

How did this “Christmas Culture” develop?

Ever since Christmas became a time for the family, there have been attempts to create a sort of “culture” around the holiday. The earliest instance of this was in the 17th century, where English folktales personified Christmas as a caring old man, known as “Father Christmas.” Although Father Christmas did not give any gifts or play with any children, he was a popular symbol of the cheer of Christmastime. Many years later, in the 19th century, an economic depression in America led popular author Washington Irving to publish a series of short stories about a Christmas celebration in a manor house. This led to the publication of many pieces of “Christmas Literature” such as Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Advertisements during this time also began to feature common icons of Christmas: reindeer, bells, and a fat, jolly Santa Claus were common in holiday advertisements.

An 1868 advertisement for sugar plums, normally eaten around Christmastime. This advertisement features a drawing similar to the Santa Claus we are familiar with today.

Christmas became more romanticized throughout the late 1800s and the early 1900s. Santa Claus became more popular as a children’s character, as seen in books and magazines such as The Life and Adventures Of Santa Claus (1902) by L. Frank Baum, and Boys’ Life (1913) . However, these characters and symbols were still not viewed by society the way they are today. This all changed in 1931, when artist Haddon Sundblom published an advertisement featuring a now stereotypical Santa Claus.

Haddon Sundblom’s Santa Claus advertisement for Coca-Cola, 1931.
Why did Coca-Cola’s Santa become so popular?

Let’s take a closer look at Santa Claus in this advertisement. At first, the image of Santa holding up a glass of Coke looks very novel and original. But on closer inspection, the imagery in the advertisement is very similar to past depictions of Santa Claus.

Santa is smiling and posing in the advertisement almost identically to his depiction in Thomas Nast’s “Merry Old Santa”, published in 1881. Nast’s image was the first depiction of Santa as a plump, jolly figure in a red coat. In fact, the majority of artists agree that “Merry Old Santa” was the first ever depiction of the “modern Santa.” The drawing of “Merry Old Santa” is not only similar to today’s Santa, but was also popular among the people. One columnist in The New Yorker even commented that in the drawing, Santa became a  “local deity.” Needless to say, “Merry Old Santa”  was a strong source of Christmas nostalgia for 1930’s America, and an advertisement reminiscent of this nostalgia immediately drew people closer to the Christmas culture that Coca-Cola presented to them.

Coca-Cola and Christmas literature

Haddon Sundblom continued to draw inspiration from past Christmases after his initial 1931 Christmas ad campaign. Most famously, he created a series of hand-drawn advertisements from Clement Clark Moore’s 1822 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”. This poem starts with some very familiar lines:

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…
The same sense of familiarity is found in the advertisements themselves, which again feature the plump, jolly, and now nostalgic Santa Claus shown earlier:

Coca-Cola shaped Christmas culture into a culture of nostalgia, joy, and familiarity. However, it did not accomplish this by creating new, original symbols that instantly won the hearts of the people. Instead, Coca-Cola made old Christmas traditions more accessible, invoking a positive feeling toward Christmas that still exists to this day.

Beginner’s Guide to CS:GO Esports

0

The Best Esport

Counter-Strike Global Offensive is a competitive first-person shooter game released in 2012. This installment of Counter-Strike is a complete modernization of the Counter-Strike series developed by Valve. Counter-Strike, better known as CS, has always been a competitive esport. The release of Counter-Strike Global Offensive, shortened to CS:GO, was timed perfectly to the explosion of the esports industry. Today, CS:GO is the most popular first-person shooter and one of the most popular esports. This guide is a quick introduction for those who are interested in CS:GO. We will go over the basics of the game, what makes it so competitive, and important aspects of the competitive scene. After reading this guide, you’ll be able to talk with all the cool kids about the best esport.

The Basic Framework

CS:GO is a team game, with 2 teams of 5 players playing against each other.

One team is the “Attacking” team or terrorists. For this team, the objective is to plant the bomb on the “bomb site” and ensure it blows up before the in-game timer runs out. The other team is the “Defending” team or counter-terrorists. For this team, the objective is to defend the bomb site from the terrorists, ensuring that their malicious intentions are not realized.

The attacking team can win by eliminating everyone on the other team, or by planting the bomb and blowing it up at a bomb site. There is a timer of 1 minute 55 seconds, forcing the attacking team to take the initiative and attack the bomb sites. When this timer reaches 0, the defending team wins. The defending team’s winning condition is stopping the bomb from going off before the time runs out. They can do this by eliminating everyone on the other team and defusing the bomb, defusing the bomb without eliminating everyone, or by eliminating everyone before they plant the bomb.

This may seem like the defending team has an advantage, as all they have to do is hold onto the bomb site and wait until the time runs out. Right? Not quite. On every map, there are two bomb sites. The defending team has to defend both. Although the attacking team still has to take the initiative to attack a bombsite so that they can plant the bomb, the defending team cannot simply stay idle. If they do stay idle, they will find themselves outnumbered as the whole attacking team pours in to attack a bomb site defended by a smaller defence. This makes information gathering a big part of the game. For the attackers, they want to figure out which bombsite is the least defended, easiest to attack. For the defenders, they want to figure out where they should commit more defenders in order to defend the bomb site from an incoming attack.

Once the winner is decided, the round ends and the winning team is awarded one point.  The first team to accumulate 16 round wins is the winner of the game.  The game continues for up to 30 rounds.  A scoreline of 15 – 15 would be considered a tie.  Many professional games do not allow ties.  If after the end of “regulation”, 30 rounds, the score is even, the game continues for an extra 6 rounds until one team wins by 2 rounds.

Health

Every player has 100 points of health. Armour can also be purchased, which adds 100 points of armour. Armour can be seen as a semi-extension of health. The player’s health will be damaged when they are shot. However, when a player has armour, this damage will be reduced, with some of the load being taken by their armour.

The Maps

In competitive CS:GO, there is a “map pool”. The map pool is a collection of maps that the game can be played on. Currently, the maps that are in the map pool are: Dust II, Inferno, Overpass, Nuke, Mirage, Vertigo, and Train. Every map has a defining feature. These features make teams favour certain maps over others, as some may suit their playstyle much better. Usually, in competitive games, there is a map-picking phase, where each team has the opportunity to ban maps they do not want to play on, and pick ones that they do. This is usually a quick process, but very important. Many teams have “permanent bans” which are maps that they refuse to play. For example, Team Liquid always bans Train.

Even though every map is unique, there are many similarities between maps. In fact, the framework for a map is the same across all maps. As mentioned earlier, each map has two bomb sites. The A-Site and the B-Site. Every map offers multiple angles of attack for the attacking team. But not too many as to make a bomb site indefensible by the defending team. The framework of all maps are so similar, that the same names are used for areas with similar function across maps. An examples would be how the hallways that attack the A-Site on Inferno and the hallway that attacks the B-Site on Mirage are both named “Apartments”.

(Mirage callouts)

(Inferno Callouts)

Another aspect of this similar structure, is the similarities between B-Sites and A-Sites across maps. The A-Site is more open, whereas the B-site is tighter with choke points. Across all maps, there will be choke points, and open areas. Not only does this make positioning of both the attackers and the defenders important, it also makes the choice of weaponry important.

The Weapons

At the start of every round, players have the opportunity to purchase their loadout. The “base” loadout, when the player purchases nothing, is horrible. It consists of a pistol. That’s it. No armour, no rifles, no big boys. Just a small little pistol. Because of this, how a player chooses their loadout is extremely important. Players can purchase different grenades, pistols, SMGs, rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, and armour. The choice of weapon is extremely important. Some weapons will shred through unarmoured opponents thanks to its high fire rate. However, when it comes to armoured opponents, these weapons may not fare nearly as well.

Sniper rifles are excellent when it comes to holding angles of attack from long range. At close range, they aren’t nearly as effective because of their slow rate of fire.

Weapons all have different prices. The better the weapon, the more expensive it is. The worse the weapon, the cheaper it is.

One important feature of weapons in CS:GO, is the recoil. This is how the bullets being shot sway from the original target based on the kickback of the rifle as bullets are being shot in quick succession. Recoil is a big deal in CS:GO, as after the first few shots, the path of the bullets are completely off target. But there’s a secret. The pattern of the recoil that guns have in CS:GO, is always the same. This is referred to the “recoil pattern”. Through practice, one will be able to memorize the exact pattern for particular guns, allowing one to fire the gun in quick succession without going off target. This allows the player to deal more damage and quicker.

This guide will focus on 9 weapons which are most commonly seen.

The first weapon we will focus on is the AWP. As previously mentioned, this is a sniper rifle. It has an extremely slow fire rate, more than a second between rounds. It is also a heavy weapon, making the player’s movement speed much slower when holding it. However, it has extreme lethality. It can kill any opponent, armoured or unarmoured in one shot to the body or head. This makes it very useful for holding choke points or any long-range angle. Because of the AWP’s penetrating power, it can shoot through many walls and deal significant damage, sometimes even kill. Because of the AWP’s properties, it is an extremely powerful weapon that has the potential to single-handedly hold an entire area of the map by itself. This is the most expensive weapon in the 9 that this guide highlights at $4750. This weapon is available to both the attacking and the defending team, but mostly utilized by the defending team because of its stationary nature.

The next two weapons we will focus on, are the M4A4, and the AK-47. The M4A4 is the standard rifle that is available on the defending side, this is not available to the attackers. The AK-47 on the other hand, is a rifle available to the attacking side, not available to the defenders. These weapons are very unique.

First, let’s take a look at the M4A4. This is a gun that costs $3100. On armoured opponents, this gun takes two shots to the head to kill. The first few shots that are fired from the M4A4, are very accurate, which makes it very good for holding medium-ranged angles. This weapon is usually used in short bursts at this distance. This is the standard weapon on the defending side.

On the attacking side, this gun is not available. In it’s place, they have the superior AK-47 available to them. The AK-47 is superior in every way to the M4A4. It costs $400 less, at $2700, and only takes one shot to the head to kill an armoured opponent. The only disadvantage to the AK-47, would be the crazy recoil. But, if you’re a professional, that means nothing, since you’ve got the pattern memorized anyways.

The next guns we will focus on, are the budget versions of the standard rifles on the defending and attacking side. These guns are weaker than the M4A4 and AK-47, but much cheaper. They are the Galil AR, and the FAMAS. These guns are basically worse versions of the standard rifles on their respective side. They do not offer lethality with shots to the head in the same way that the standard rifles do. They are horrible when attempting to duel a sniper. However, they are much cheaper. So, at medium and close range, they can still have the same impact as the other rifles. The rifles are also very useful for “force buy” rounds, which we will cover in the economy section of this guide. Just remember, the Galil AR is the budget AK-47, and the FAMAS is the budget M4A4.

Cheaper than the Galil AR and the FAMAS, are a line of SMGs. These guns boast a high fire rate that shreds through unarmoured targets, and provides potential stopping power at close-medium range. These weapons are usually used to hold tight and close angles. They are particularly effective in sneaky corners the opponents do not usually check. The most commonly used SMG on the defending side, is the MP9. The most commonly used SMG on the attacking side, is the MAC-10.

Even cheaper than the SMGs, are pistols. This guide will focus on the CZ75-Auto (CZ), and the Desert Eagle (Deagle). The CZ is a fully automatic pistol that is only available on the defending side. It is an SMG but with only 12 bullets and takes forever to reload. Mostly used in extremely close range, when that is all the player can afford. The idea behind the CZ, is that the player can quickly kill an opponent, and pick up their weapon. It’s a very sneaky weapon.

The Deagle is the most popular pistol. It offers one-shot head-shot lethality, but with extreme recoil and only 7 bullets in its magazine. This pistol is the most expensive because of its lethal potential. With really good positioning, and well coordinated, skillful play, the Desert Eagle can be a formidable weapon.

In addition to these weapons, there are a plethora of grenades, known as “utility”. The name describes how useful these grenades can be. There is the molotov, which spreads fire to an area of the map for a few seconds. Stepping in a Molotov is not recommended, as it damages the player and can lead to death. This is often used to stop the opponents in their tracks.

Another grenade is the “smoke grenade” or “smoke”. This is a grenade that spews out a cloud of smoke, blocking off small areas of the map for a short period. This is very useful against snipers, as it can conceal the movements of your team while trying to avoid the lethal shot from a sniper rifle.

The last piece of utility that this guide will focus on, is the “flashbang”. This is a grenade that explodes a blinding light, disorienting all who have it in their line of sight for a few seconds. This is a grenade used when going around corners, to ensure the player’s safety and perhaps catch a disoriented enemy to secure a kill.

These are the main weapons that you will need to know about. Remember, the load-out that is the default, is just a pistol. The default pistols are pretty bad. So, the purchasing of weapons at the beginning of every round is extremely important to the gameplay. If the player does not purchase weapons suitable for their role, it makes the job of their opponents much easier.

The Economy

It may not be the first thing that comes to mind for first-time viewers of CS:GO, but financial management is an important aspect of competitive play. This was hinted at in the previous section where weapon prices were discussed. At the beginning of every game, each player only has $800. No armour, no weapons, save for a pistol, not a very good one at that. To make more money, the teams have to play. With a round win, each winning player receives a certain amount of money. With a round lost, each losing player also receives money. This is notably less than the reward for winning. Here is a quick table that summarizes the different amounts of compensation that can be awarded based on the outcome of the round.

Round Outcome

Reward

Winning by Team Elimination

$3250 + $300 if bomb planted as T

Winning by Time Win (CT only)

$3250

Winning by Bomb Defusal (CT only)

$3500

Winning by Bomb Detonation (T only)

$3500

Losing Pistol Round (First round)

$1900 + $800 if bomb planted as T

Losing (Loss Count: 0)

$1400 + $800 if bomb planted as T

Losing (Loss Count: 1)

$1900 + $800 if bomb planted as T

Losing (Loss Count: 2)

$2400 + $800 if bomb planted as T

Losing (Loss Count: 3)

$2900 + $800 if bomb planted as T

Losing (Loss Count: 4)

$3400 + $800 if bomb planted as T

The Loss Count is an interesting mechanic that is very unique to CS:GO. The loss count counts successive losses. The count increases by one with a loss, and decreases by one with a win. The loss bonus gives a little extra push, so that every round matters, so that teams can’t be stuck in financial ruin, making for a boring game.

Remember the cost of weapons and armour that was discussed earlier in this guide? Those numbers are extremely important, as precise financial management will give one team an extra edge over the other. If the team does not manage their finances effectively, they may find themselves in the situation where they may not have adequate, suitable weaponry for rounds going into the future.

Because this is so important, teams may find themselves in interesting situations. These situations seem counter-intuitive at first, but because of the economic system, and the importance of appropriate weaponry, these situations are very strategic and make sense. These situations are called “save”, “eco” rounds, “force buy” rounds, and “anti-eco” rounds.

The Save

After losing a few rounds in a row, a team may find themselves in a situation where they do not have enough money to purchase full weaponry and armour. Because of this, they may decide to “save”. It’s just as the name suggests. A save round, is a round where the team buys nothing, saving their money for the next round. The team who is saving is expected to lose the round, as the pistols part of the default load-out do very poor damage against armoured opponents.

The Eco and Force Buy

An Eco and Force Buy rounds come from similar situations to a save round. The team may find themselves in a situation where they do not have enough finances to purchase all the adequate weapons. However, their finances aren’t so horrendous that they find themselves unable to purchase any weaponry at all. At this time, the team has a few choices. They can decide to purchase a few upgraded pistols (like the CZ75-Auto or Desert Eagle) saving a bit of money or use all of their finances to purchase the best weapons they can afford (Galil AR, FAMAS, MP9, or MAC-10).

First, we’ll focus on the Eco and the implications making this decision this will have on future rounds. This is when the team decides to buy upgraded pistols and perhaps some armour. The objective of doing this, is to do economic damage to the other team while leaving themselves in good economic condition. When a team is on an Eco round, they are not expected to win. Furthermore, the team would not position like they normally would. On the CT side, the team would most likely hide in weird, tight corners, rather than the normal angles defending the bomb-site. The player’s goal would be to pick off individual enemy players, hoping to pick up their gun. If they do manage to kill a few players, and pick up a few guns, they might have a chance to win the round. Even if they don’t win the round, but managed to scavenge a few weapons from their opponents, this would be considered a successful round. Regardless of what happens, they will have enough to fully buy in the upcoming round.

The other choice teams can make in this situation, is to Force Buy. This is when the team decides to use all of their funds to purchase the best weaponry they can afford. This results in a team with some pieces missing. They may not have enough funds for everyone to purchase rifles, armour, and a full belt of utility. Some may be on SMGs or not have important pieces of utility. Teams are much more likely to win a Force Buy. However, if they lose, the team’s economy will be decimated. They would be forced to save. Because of this risk associated, teams usually choose to force buy when they know their opponents have a weakness (in strategy or their weapon loadout). Perhaps, the team was able to kill 4 out of their 5 members in the previous round, so they know their finances are not the best. A force buy is a risk, but the payoff can be huge, as it gives the team a good chance to win.

The Anti-Eco

An Anti-Eco is a strategic investment in cheaper weaponry by a team. They choose to invest in SMGs, or other weaponry that would normally be unfavourable. However, because they suspect the enemy team to be poor and unable to fully invest into the upcoming round, cheaper weaponry may be a very sound investment. The payback from this investment comes from a mechanic known as the “Kill Reward”.

The Kill Reward

Every time the player kills another player, they are rewarded financially based on the weapon they utilized to make the kill. For the most part, the kill reward is higher for weapons that are cheaper and harder to kill with. Here is a quick table with the kill rewards for the weapons that this guide has highlighted.

Weapon

Reward

Knife

$1500

Pistol

$300

CZ75-Auto

$100

SMG

$600

Rifle

$300

AWP

$100

The kill rewards make some of the economic decisions highlighted in this guide clearer and more understandable. In an Anti-Eco round, teams may decide to invest in SMGs instead of rifles, hoping to capitalize on the large kill reward.

Saving Weapons

Because of the fragility of the team’s economy. Sometimes, when teams find themselves in unfavourable positions, rather than continuing to play out the round, they will choose to hide from the enemies and save their weapons for the next round. For example, a team finding themselves with only 2 players left while the opponents still have all 5 alive might choose to save their weapons for the next round rather than playing the current round out and most likely losing all their weapons. Saving a few weapons might bring a team from a situation where they have to save, to a situation where they can fully invest, or force-buy.

Example of Game

Round:

  1. CTs win, Ts manage to plant the bomb 1-0
  2. Ts force buy, Ts win 1-1
  3. CTs save, Ts win 1-2
  4. CTs buy, Ts still have their force bought weapons, CTs win 2-2
  5. Ts force buy, CTs win 3-2
  6. Ts force buy, CTs win 4-2
  7. Ts force buy, CTs win 5-2
  8. Ts eco, CTs win 6-2
  9. Ts buy, CTs win 7-2
  10. Ts force buy, CTs win 8-2
  11. Ts can buy because of the round losses they’ve built, despite having force bought the last round, Ts win 8-3
  12. CTs buy despite losing because they have saved a considerable amount of money from consecutive wins, Ts win 8-4
  13. CTs buy again, CTs win 9-4
  14. Ts buy, CTs win 10-4
  15. Ts force buy, it is the last round of the half.  There is no point in saving.  CTs win 11-4

This concludes the first half of the game.  After 15 rounds, the teams switch sides.  The defending team now attacks, and the attacking team now defends.

  1. CTs win pistol round 11-5
  2. Ts force buy, Ts win 12-5
  3. CTs save, Ts win 13-5
  4. CTs buy, Ts win 14-5
  5. CTs eco, Ts win 15-5
  6. CTs buy, CTs win 15-6
  7. Ts buy, CTs win 15-7
  8. Ts force buy, Ts win 16-7

The Team that started on the CT side was able to build a considerable lead in the first half, 11 rounds to 4.  They only needed 5 round wins on their T side to win the game.

Now you know the basics to CS:GO esports.  CS:GO is one of the most popular esports.  There are tournaments weekly!  Hopefully, this basic information will allow you to gain a foothold on the basic concepts of the game.  You will learn much much more about strategy, and gameplay as you watch.  Do not worry if you are still a bit confused.  Esports is much different from traditional sports, much more entertaining and complex.  Have fun watching CS:GO!  The most superior esport, never forget that.

The Story of the Father

0

“Dad,” Lucas came home one afternoon with tears in his eyes, “we broke the vase of tulips.”

For the last twenty years, I have lived with a sort of guilt that was never to be revisited. The sort that I locked in the deepest, darkest part of the attic. The sort where, in those late, shuffling nights, when I was tempted to peek through the crack and catch a glance of it, I would suddenly remember what is there and slam the door shut. I had talked myself through the rights and wrongs until it became a hundred percent sure that what I had done was justified. After all, there was no way out.

I hadn’t allowed myself to think through what had happened. Each time I was reminded of the memory, I shut it out before it could bother me. But then I looked my son in the eye, saw my reflection in his tears, and found myself letting down the ladder. And there it was. The memory that I thought rotted to bare bones was right in front of me in all its shame.

“When I was your age, the village was, well, more of a village.”

And before I knew it, my lips were moving. Words were echoing through the air with such perfection and vividness that gave it the impression of having been carefully rehearsed.

“Food was scarcer back then. Our school owned a piece of land planted with wheat every year. The teachers and students were in charge of taking care of the crops. It was a safety measure, of a sort. If the harvest was bad that year, if there’s a drought, or pests maybe, we would use the food from this land to put the entire village back at ease. It never did much, but it gave a sense of security to an entire village.”

“Me and a couple of friends were playing in the field. That morning, I had managed to sneak a box of matches–.”

“No! You burnt everything down?”

It’s weird how no one saw it coming. Lucas didn’t even let me get past the “box of matches”. Really, what were we thinking? What was I thinking?

It was all coming back. The flames flashed before my eyes.

Then I told Lucas about how we started off by lighting a single piece of dried straw. How we waved it around like firecrackers and laughed like we never will again. How then a single piece turned into another, then a handful.

That was part of the excitement. How far could we go before it was all over? We set stacks of dried straw onto the field and dropped matches on them. Once the fire began to grow, we would jump on it to stump it out. We would panic as the fire grew, but we would laugh at each other once it was gone. We kept pushing the limit, joking about what would happen when it got out of control. We felt powerful, rebellious, young, that was how I justified it.

Of course it grew out of control. There really seemed to be no other way to end the day.

It was dusk. The flames burnt across the sky, leaving its ashes in a smoky shade of amber.

We ran away.

It wasn’t a conscious decision. No one suggested that we should run away. Everyone just, did. We didn’t wait for each other. We sprinted in different directions as if that was enough to undo the destruction.

We stood among the tidy crowd, watching, keeping perfect posture as the flag rose the next morning. I forgot my red scarf for the ceremony.

No I didn’t. I just couldn’t bring myself to put it on.

After the usual procedures, what we had been dreading all morning finally came. The principal spoke into the microphone, the one that was always used for award ceremonies, asking the culprit to speak up. He kept talking, though I can’t remember what he said anymore. He moved with violent hand gestures. The microphone shook as he flung his arm around, pointing at our ruins. I couldn’t keep my posture straight. I felt a heavy, horrible sense of guilt sink into my shoulders. What if there is a drought this year? Or pests? It swarmed around me, threatening to swallow me whole. The village will starve, and kids will die. It circulated every vein in my body. It rose to my chest only to explode there. I could contain it no longer.

“We did it!”

I screamed across the field, filling it with deafening silence. The students, the teachers, the principal, my friends, they were all staring. When I saw that there was no going back, I spilled everything. I told the principal how I had stolen the matches from home, how we set little fires, then bigger ones, how it grew out of control, how we ran away.

I named everyone who was there.

The school thought I was a hero. The principal punished us, but a lot lighter than he should have. He thanked me for being honest. For weeks people would talk about how brave I was to own up to what I had done. They called the others cowards, people who dared to do but could bear no responsibility.

But I knew. We never said it out loud, but I knew that we were supposed to be in this together. We were friends, and friends don’t sell each other out. If we were going to own it, we owned it together. And if one person was too afraid, if one person wanted to hide it, then we all hid it with him. I don’t know what was wrong with me that morning, but I knew the moment I opened my mouth, it was going to be a betrayal.

There was no way out, was there? We couldn’t hide it forever. Surely someone would have found out eventually. And when they found out, the consequences would have been so much worse. We couldn’t have convinced everyone to admit it together either, people were too afraid. I had no way out.

So when Lucas looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, telling me that he and Jack had broken the vase of tulips in the classroom together, I didn’t know what to say. I could only tell my story.

The next day, Lucas came home and ran into the living room. He bounced on the couches, cheering. After a while, he lied on the cushions, his arms and legs spread out in relief.

“I told the teacher.” He said. I could hear his grin.

“What did you say?”

“I said I broke it, all by myself.”

“And then?”

“And then she smiled and acted confused, telling me that Jack had told her the same thing.”

St. Mary’s Marine Mammal Program

0

In this blog, I will talk about the marine mammal summer program I attended this summer, and why I would recommend it to anybody.

I was researching science-related summer programs one day when I came across St. Mary University’s website. It described a hands-on marine biology program that was 10 days long at St. Mary’s University and Campobello Island. I was engrossed in their program and decided to apply immediately. A few weeks later, I was notified that I had been accepted. Obviously, I was thrilled to go, but I was also nervous as it would also be my first time flying alone.

On the first day, I was introduced to thirteen other teens who I’d be living with for the next nine days. We played a few icebreakers and did a scavenger hunt all across campus to get to know the university a little better. By the end of the day, most of the awkwardness was gone. We slept in individual rooms with a single bed.

For the first three days, we attended lectures ranging from the classification of all marine species, to adaptation and ecology, to Acoustics. The science curriculum in Alberta barely touches this area, so it was very interesting to learn all about marine animals.

On our fourth day, we traveled to Campobello Island, where we’d be spending the next three days. On our way to the island, we stopped at the New Brunswick Museum. However, this was no ordinary museum visit. Instead of going through the regular entrance, we went into the collection building of the museum. We had the opportunity to witness how items were stored and prepared before they go on display.

At Campobello Island, the fourteen of us were split into groups of 3-4 individuals and devised three of our own experiments that we would conduct on the boat trips. For example, one of the experiments my group conducted was “How long does the average whale dive for?” During the handful of boat trips we went on at Campobello Island, I saw countless porpoises and seals. I even spotted a handful of whales, some of which were the second largest species that have ever lived!

On the way back to St. Mary’s University, we went through the New Brunswick Museum like the rest of the public.

We attended a few more lectures when we got back, and also presented our findings to everybody else. On the second last day, we watched the Wizard of Oz together outdoors, which was super fun and refreshing.

As the ten days came to an end, I was stoked to go home and see my family again, but at the same time, I knew I was going to miss all the wonderful people I met at this camp.

St. Mary’s Marine Mammal Camp was one of the most exhilarating 10 days of my life. I learned a ton but also had fun. The fourteen of us were very close by the end, and we still keep in touch. I would definitely encourage anyone interested in marine mammals or biology in general to apply.

It’s undeniable we all possess fears. The prospect of failure, especially when confronting moments with unexpected outcomes, heightens these moments of insecurity and doubt. It could be a crucial exam, financial struggle, or perhaps a rejection? I’m the same.

“Want to go out… want to g-go out with me?”

To my past self, and all others like me. Seriously man (or woman), what do you have to lose? Rejection is not uncommon, and honestly, familiarize yourself with it. Now I don’t mean to become complacent and wallow in personal sorrows. But rather with these experiences, to gain courage, and gradually be willing to confront personal obstacles. In this way, we emerge from these occasions with an improved outlook and perspective. This is an opportunity to grow, confront, and succeed, and this chance is often compromised in order to retain a sense of security.

Everyone has heard the motivational and inspirational adages regarding how adversity strengthens character. Everyone has heard the aphorisms to value yourself, to not define yourself based on past failures. So you don’t need a High School student to patronizingly remind you of them. I just want to let you know, you are not alone. And as cliche as sounds, it’s never easy, but that’s okay.

“I would define “rejection” as the diversion of personal expectations”

So then this “rejection”, is simply a result of one’s subverted desires. And then I suppose it would be fair to say that failures are defined by what we perceive as a loss.

The entire world, is united under the common umbrella of “failure”, the only variance being our individualized responses to our circumstance.

Consider the most successful or inspirational people you admire. At some point, they shared the same bitter resentment and disappointment, but were able to overcome adversity. Walking along a harsh path, they assuaged the literal or figurative scars of the past, and utilizing these memories, they enhanced and enriched their life, and became magnificent. One such person is Arthur O’Shaughnessy.

I am reminded of the opening stanza of the poem “Ode” when I inevitably encounter failure in my life. You may recognize it today for its countless references in modern times, most notably in Willy Wonka.

Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy

We are the music makers,

And we are the dreamers of dreams,

Wandering by lone sea-breakers,

And sitting by desolate streams;—

World-losers and world-forsakers,

On whom the pale moon gleams:

Yet we are the movers and shakers

Of the world for ever, it seems.

Who would know what compelled Arthur O’Shaughnessy, a man who lived 175 years ago to write this poem? But he suffered the same bitterness of torn dreams, I think this was a simple declaration to the world. It was a modest voice crying out amidst the chaotic world. Regardless if anyone heard or listened to his plea it did not matter. The true value arose from the comfort of searching for another human, a sympathizer who appreciated his humble dream and hopeful attempt.

Failure is a universal experience with untraceable long roots, ingrained into both the quiet and the ambitious. We continually contemplate these moments of suffering and indignation today. We dreamed, and we failed.

And we sat alone with the broken fragments of dreams under a starless night left to ponder the futility of “what could have been.”

So I implore you reader. To not surrender when faced with adversity, but confront it, these moments will undeniably prove fruitful. Or as Dylan Thomas would put it.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Thank you.

The Question of the Good Life

0

How do you validate a life? How does one determine the value of a life and what are the indicators of a well lived life?

The question of the good life has been considered for the entirety of human existence, resulting in the erection of various religious institutions and a changing understanding of human existence. We are all unfortunately victims of the human condition and are always evolving, engaged in external and internal conflicts while questioning our own mortality. The ways in which we delegate our time and those goals we pursue in our limited existence will guide the course of our futures and impact how we reflect on our past. Our own evaluations of the value or substance of our own lives intersect with the existential beliefs, or lack thereof, which we hold.

Many philosophers believe that we ourselves assign meaning to the tasks we do. There is no set or inherent meaning to the things we choose to do. The worth of these actions is rather held by the individual and thus bestows the power, and responsibility, upon them to uphold value within their own lives.

While there are many popular philosophies regarding the question of the good life the following are the most notable and/or prevalent:

Hedonism is the theory that pleasure is equal to good and to pursue one’s desires in life is the fullest one can pursue a good life. Through this, the hedonist assigns meaning to happiness, and thus pursues it in order to live a good life.

Kant insisted that virtue was instilled through resisting desires in a position in many ways similar to that of Plato. Asceticism, which is a key component in life philosophies proposed by Plato, many religions and Kant, suggests that in order to reach some form of spiritual fulfillment one must abstain from sensual indulgences.

Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche however argued that to deny these pleasures was to sacrifice the individual’s own life. And so the noblest form of living was to strive for individual growth and development.

Aristotle championed learning as the most valuable asset to any human being, and the quest to acquire knowledge was an assertion of one’s humanity and life fulfillment.

Some people choose wealth as an indicator of a life’s value. The resulting relationship is a proportional one between the accumulation of wealth and an individual’s value in life. Aristotle opposed this notion through stating that the acquisition of wealth was only a means to gain other objects and so it would not be the wealth itself which holds meaning to the individual but rather the objects which wealth is used to attain.

While you yourself pursue goals and reflect on your past actions and achievements please consider what holds meaning in your life. What do you feel is valuable and how do your past, present and future goals reflect this? How do your actions and intentions parallel your individual beliefs surrounding the question of the good life? Think critically about morality and use this contemplation to guide your pursuit of the good life.

False Dawn

0

Foreword: Book covers are a great source of inspiration for a short story or anecdote. Simply browse the internet, find a book cover image that stimulates your curiosity, and begin writing. This is a creative writing piece based off the “False Dawn” book cover (above). Enjoy!

An engine revved in the distance.

Eriq couldn’t see in the ink-black night, but he recognized the sounds of the notorious Serbian motorbike that could only belong to the Demon Host. Darting into his carapace of a home held together by old floorboards, Eriq hid in the corner. He prayed.

Eriq’s village was long abandoned: its inhabitants had been massacred three years ago. Since then, the sun had never risen. Black clouds plagued the sky, while soot and ash took the place of rain and snow. The endless night made sight nearly impossible. In the distance, a perpetual scarlet burned ceaselessly.

Gone were the days of light and peace; only a bloodred blackness remained.

It was rumoured that Wolfgang had an uncanny sense of smell. His eyes, fiery like the false dawn, glowed with power. Ripped gloves left his pointed claws exposed. A black leather jacket was draped over his shoulders, matching the leather of his Serbian motorbike. Painted on his face was a smear of blood and the smile of the devil. He was merciless. He was a hunter.

Eriq had never thought Wolfgang would return. But the sounds of the motorbike were unmistakably clear. The Demon Host was approaching.

Abruptly, the sound of the engine switched off. Eriq shrunk deeper into his corner, not knowing whether Wolfgang had left, or if he had been discovered. His heart pulsed relentlessly, and his breathing shallowed. After all he’d been through, he would not give away his whereabouts because of the sounds of his ragged breathing. Eriq swore not to make a sound, terrified to the core.

Little did Eriq know that he would never make another sound.

A Gen Z’s Guide to “Okay Boomer”

0

A Quick History on Baby Boomers

What are Boomers?

The term “boomer” is in short of Baby Boomers,  individuals born between 1944 and 1964, which is after the World War II.

Collectively, boomers were born more privileged than any other generations, especially because they were born at the right period of time. The world was just recovering from the impact of the war; but the families with children were striving with the education and housing provided by the government. Boomers are known to find faults within the current world and with the  Generation Zs..

“Okay Boomer”

“Okay Boomer” is a phrase going viral on media.

It was first used when a Twitter user named Jonathan Williams created a song pouring out all his annoyance towards the older generation that can be related by several people. This expression is used to:

  1. mock outdated mindsets and narrow-minded opinions.
  2. criticize stereotypes based on gender, social status, background, etc.
  3. defend yourself against the fierce condemnation of boomers.

A few occasions to use this phrase:

“Why are kids these days so sensitive to everything? When I was you age, I rolled in Poison Ivy and ate wild boars!”

“Okay Boomer.”

“Whyareyoualwaysonyourphone-“

“Okay Boomer.”

“I worry about the young fellows these days, when I was your age-“

“Okay Boomer.”

“Why does your friend have a pierced nose and a half-cut Tshirt??”

“Okay Boomer.”

“You kids are always playing video games! When I was your age, we always went outside to-“

“OKAY BOOMER.”

Unsurprisingly, one could take this phrase offensively. So make sure to say this to only the friendliest of boomers!

(I am speaking from experience.)

A Simple Guide to Modern Calligraphy

0

Calligraphy is the art of forming beautiful symbols by hand and arranging them well.

Do you remember learning how to handwrite in cursive in elementary school? It was comprised of the tedious tracing worksheets and exercises for a style of writing that we would never use again!

I have always had a profound fascination with handwriting and I loved being able to connect letters with large loopy strokes. It has been so disappointing to me to learn that handwriting is becoming less and less relevant in today’s world. As I grew older, I began to regret losing this beautiful art form for writing. Upon searching for handwriting tutorials online, I came upon a community of people who shared the same passion as me! There has been a growing interest surrounding lettering and “calligraphy” online. This new form of hand lettering has been coined “modern calligraphy” or “faux calligraphy.” Modern calligraphy is a slightly modified version of traditional calligraphy as it is less strict and can be more creative! Faux calligraphy is lettering done with a pen, marker or any other writing utensil that isn’t a brush or a calligraphy brush.

Handwriting

Before you begin your path to learning calligraphy, you should start with the basics! Try going back and perfecting your handwriting style! Try using a handwriting guide (like the one on the side!) to practise your cursive. Once you become comfortable writing the alphabet using the guide, try practicing on your own! Remember: for modern calligraphy, you don’t have to write in cursive for every letter. You can write in your own style or by changing up some letters! As you continue to practise, you will find what is most comfortable for you and what you think looks best!

Faux Calligraphy

Faux calligraphy is the easiest way to becoming a calligraphy master! All you have to do is handwrite normally (just like you practiced!) and add extra strokes for all of your “down-strokes” as pictured. This is difficult to explain but in order to make it appear as if you’ve written the letter with a brush, you have to create the illusion of thick down-strokes. You can achieve this by drawing a line really close to your original down-strokes. You can then fill in the blank space or leave it as is! This gives your cursive the appearance of being calligraphy, hence the name faux calligraphy. This style of calligraphy is definitely the easiest and the most comfortable to learn as a beginner as there is no need for fancy brush pens or calligraphy dip pens. You can easily do this style of writing with a pencil and then trace over it with a pen or marker!

Brush Pens

Now that you have perfected your handwriting and faux calligraphy, it’s time to try using brush pens! Although seemingly daunting and difficult to use, once well-practised, you will find using a brush pen a lot easier for calligraphy. When looking for the right brush pen, make sure to look for one with a firm tip so that the pen doesn’t spread out too much when pressing down on it. The first one I have ever tried was the Pentel Fude Touch Brush Pen. You can find it on Amazon here. I bought one at Recess Shop, a cute stationery store in Inglewood for about three or four dollars. I now have 2 brush pens and I use them religiously. They’re perfect for adding titles to my notes or for writing cards!

Starting out with brush pens can be difficult so I would recommend trying markers first. Markers like the Crayola Supertips are great because they’ve got both a thin point and a thick stroke on the side. Based on how you hold the marker and how much pressure you apply, you can do calligraphy! Here’s an example of lettering done with markers below.

I would highly recommend practicing calligraphy with markers first as it will be easier to transition to using brush pens. Make sure to hold your marker or brush pen about 45 degrees to the paper and don’t hold it upright. This will damage the tip of the pen (especially brush pens). Remember to have thin strokes going up and thick strokes going down. For the first couple of times, you may have to apply a lot more pressure on your down-strokes to differentiate them from your thin up-strokes. Remember that practice makes perfect!

I am by no means an expert on calligraphy, but I thought that I would share my love for calligraphy and the steps I took to learn how to write fancy cursive letters. I am now fairly comfortable using my brush pen and I often do calligraphy using my Mildliner highlighters. Make sure to keep practising and stay committed! It took me 2 years to be able to do calligraphy comfortably and I am still learning. I hope to explore more forms of this beautiful art soon and I hope you fall in love with it as much as I have!
