Cinematic Reflections: Saltburn

Disclaimer: This movie has mature themes (STRONG sexual content, graphic nudity, and disturbing/violent content). I personally would not recommend watching if you’re under the age of 17 and/or are easily disturbed.

NO SPOILERS 🙂

Brief Movie Summary:

In Emerald Fennell’s ‘Saltburn,’ the story unfolds around Oliver, an Oxford student grappling with a challenging living situation. Touched by empathy, his classmate Felix extends an invitation to his estate. However, the tranquility is disrupted as a series of harrowing events befall Felix’s family.

My Thoughts:

To be quite frank, I thought the movie was pretty bad. The story line is extremely slow regarding its progression, and it miserably failed at capturing my attention as I found myself reaching for my phone quite often. I lost about 40 minutes of the movie and didn’t notice as no major plot developments happened. While the cinematography stands out with its stunning visuals, the overall depth of the film is lacking. The characters remain superficial, making it challenging to truly connect or empathize with any particular individual. A more substantial development of the storyline around the characters would have added much-needed substance to the viewing experience.

Despite being labelled as a thriller/comedy, I struggled to identify this film’s comedic elements. Instead, I was left deeply disturbed as my eyes were continuously bombarded with an onslaught of diabolical, perverted, “sexually” immoral scenes (quotations because  ‘sex’ implies consent.) Upon the movie’s conclusion, I was left more puzzled than before as I questioned how these disturbing scenes were relevant to the plot. It seemed unnecessary to resort to such grotesque and overtly crass depictions, as there could have been alternative ways for Fennell to convey the sociopathic nature of the main character.

So to put it simply, this was probably the most sickening movie I’ve ever seen.  It was definitely something. Watch at your own risk.
