I wish I could say that my name is Cordelia or that I can recite "The Highwayman" from memory or even that I live on Prince Edward Island. While these facts are unfortunately untrue, you can probably tell by now that I am a die-hard Anne of Green Gables fan! My name is Sarena Dharshi and I can say that one of my favourite poems is Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott" and I have indeed visited Charlottetown, P.E.I. Some other fun facts about me: I attend Western Canada High School, my favourite colour is turquoise and I am a huge Harry Potter fan. I love writing and performing spoken word poetry and I am also a blogger for The Huffington Post.
Today, I just wanted to feature Flickr member rosiehardy’s Flickr Stream called “Behind the Scenes – Fairytales (What REALLY went on with those characters behind closed doors!)”. She has found an amazing way photograph her own recreation of scenes from popular fairy-tales and link each picture to an important statistic or fact about a real crisis in our world. For…
I was truly amazed when I watched this video illustrating the effects of the phantom flex camera that films everything in extreme slow motion (that’s 2, 564 frames per second for all you techies). The results are truly exceptional and very much “Inception”-like. [youtube LRo-L9zYf-M]
Did you know that making a difference in our city doesn’t take a massive act of kindness but can be the smallest or simplest of things? I didn’t fully realize this either until I heard about Mayor Nenshi’s Three Things for Calgary initiative. Basically, you pick three things that you would like to do…
Photo af an adorable sea turtle I took at the Maui Ocean Centre two years ago.
Do not think of blood red poppies, Do not think of forlorn crosses, Do not think of crying larks, Do not think of quarrelling foe. Think of those who gave up life, Think of those who dared death, Think of those husbands, sons and lovers lost, Think of those last hugs, goodbyes and kisses…
Being a blogger, I often enjoy reading what other creative writers/illustrators put on the internet for the world to see. One of my favourite blogs is called ‘Hyperbole and a Half’. The blogger (Allie) writes about supposedly mundane occurrences in her life that she makes into hilarious cartoons. The awful stick figure pictures accompanied by…
One of the cutest and funniest music videos I have seen in a long time! Have a look and listen: [youtube o4sfh2u8cgU]
Don’t you just love the serendipitous moment of accidentally finding photographic inspiration? This beautiful scene just walked right under my nose while I was sitting in Starbucks one evening.
I felt so inspired by the poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S. Elliot (a 20th century poet), I wrote a “poetic response” to it: When the evening is spread out against the sky, When feelings and emotions are flying high. Why so intricate and obscure? When I disturb the universe so vast,…

I find a rare depth and infinite wisdom in the words J.K. Rowling channels through her character: Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore in the globally renowned Harry Potter series. For those of you perhaps less familiar with the Harry Potter books, Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He is…
Eyes glowing, Claws outstretched, Waiting, Waiting Life is an adventure, a game. There’s a new mouse to stalk, Even the curtain is a foe. And as the sun sets, And the stars show their Cheery faces, A warm bed of soft down awaits The tired predator. Egyptian worshipped, American loved, House Cat.
Last weekend, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend Calgary’s 2011 GlobalFest Multi-Cultural and Fireworks Festival Finale at Elliston Park. GlobalFest is a weeklong celebration showcasing vibrant cultures from around the world. Each country has a day where they complete their portion of the pyromusical competition (a.k.a. lots of fireworks). After China, Philippines, Canada and…
A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to go on a boat tour of Maligne Lake, located in Jasper National Park. On this boat trip, I visited the world famous Spirit Island, debatably one of most photographed islands in the world. The day we went happened to be extremely cold and foggy. We experienced everything from…
