War is…

Gore. Panic. Confusion. Fear. Unjust.

There has been quite a lot of talk and hurly-burly around the Kony 2012 campaign launched by Invisible Children (click here to view the posts). Despite the controversy, I must agree that it had quite effectively brought to our attention the issue of child soldiers around the globe. However, we must not forget that children are also victims of war, those who are helpless under their tense surroundings, left susceptible to harm. It really pains me to see these children, armed as emotionless killing machines or curled up, helpless in a soiled corner, incapable of self-defence – while we complain about the most nonsensical things…

What is being done to protect children in war? What can we do to help?

The “Children and War” Youth Week Event on April 23, 2012 is aimed at exploring how children are affected by war. Join the discussion from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 1st Floor Meeting Room, Canadian Red Cross Society 1305 – 11 Ave SW!

Here’s a little more detail about the event from the organizer:

Our Children and War workshop is a chance for youth to learn more about children who are affected by conflicts that happen all over the world, whether that could mean they’re recruited as child soldiers, they are forced to flee their homes and their futures are limited because they don’t get an education. We also look at what international groups and laws protect child soldiers. This workshop is very interactive and inspirational; you definitely won’t have time to get bored!

Make a difference and fight against war!
