Transform Cookies Into a Mug Cake

I love cookies and milk, but I also love cake. This is why some very, very difficult problems arise when I am craving a fudgy chocolate cake, but I only have cookies in my pantry and milk in my fridge. What could I do to satisfy my tastebuds with the limited ingredients I have? Thankfully for me, I saw a viral TikTok recipe for the perfect solution: a mug cake made of only milk and cookies. This sounded ridiculous to me, but I just needed to give it a try. Here’s how my attempt at this recipe went – the results might surprise you!

How I made the Cookie Mug Cake

I first started by putting a small splash of milk into my mug. I didn’t measure any specific quantities when I made this cake. All I did was eyeball consistencies and amounts.

Next, I dropped a cookie into the milk and mashed it into small bits with a fork. The original recipe uses Oreo cookies, but I used Famous Amos chocolate chip cookies. Any type of cookie will work, as long as you follow the steps correctly. The cookie bits were suspended in the milk, which had a very watery consistency. I felt cheated when this happened-how was it possible to make a cake out of this watery mess? I added more cookies, dropping them in one at a time so I could mash them finely without leaving any large chunks. Soon, the mixture reached a paste-like consistency, like in the picture below:

The cookie and milk mixture (shown in this video recipe) should somewhat resemble cake batter. Add more milk and/or cookies until your mixture looks like this.

I microwaved the mixture in 1-minute bursts until a toothpick came out clean. It seemed like I was successful. Now it was time to taste!

Tasting the Mug Cake

This was without a doubt, the most surprising part of the recipe. This crazy combination of cookies and milk tasted exactly like cake! It was moist, fudgy and tender, but not overly sweet. Most of the chocolate chips had melted or dissolved in the milk, giving the cake a chocolate flavour. As an added bonus, the partially melted chocolate chips gave the cake a burst of richness.

The one thing I could compare the cake to (other than regular chocolate cake) is a double chocolate brownie. The tenderness, richness and added chocolate chip bonus was very decadent. Overall, this crazy experiment turned out to be a very delicious dessert!

This is a pretty good visualization of how the cake tasted.

Some Tips for Making the Cake

If you want to try this recipe out for yourself, here a a few things you should look out for:

  • Make sure the mixture is paste-like, not overly watery or too chunky.
  • Mash the cookies in the milk one by one, rather than all at the same time. This eliminates unwanted cookie chunks.
  • If you are using Oreos, you can try to replicate my recipe with the cookies, and make a frosting to put on top with the cream in the middle. I didn’t have the ingredients to try this, but I think it will taste amazing.

Enjoy your new delicious dessert!
