Terms That Every Anime Fan Needs To Know

Top terms that every Anime fan needs to know; these are terms that can help identify Anime and Manga as well as create an understanding of the terms that are often used to describe people in Anime as well as in person.

 

1. Shounen

Shounen is one of the two genres that Anime and Manga fall under. It is typically aimed at a male audience but females can watch Shounen as well.

Some popular examples of a Shounen Animes are:

  1. One piece
  2. Naruto
  3. Pokemon
  4. My Hero Academia
  5. Dragon Ball

2. Shojo

Shojo is one of the two genres that Anime and Manga fall under as well. It is typically aimed at a female audience but males can watch Shojo as well.

Some popular examples of a Shojo Animes are:

  1. Kimi ni todoke
  2. Ao Haru Ride
  3. Yona of the Dawn
  4. Sailor Moon
  5. Sukitte li na yo

3. Bishounen

Bishouen is a term used to describe pretty boys as Bi means pretty and Shounen means boys in Japanese.These characters are often stereotyped as tall and slim and can be found in many different Animes.

An Anime that is often categorized as a Bishounen:

  1. Free!

4. Bishojo

Bishojo is a term used to describe pretty girls as Bi means pretty and Shojo means girls in Japanese. These characters are again stereotyped as tall and slim and found in many different Animes but for Bishojo there is no specific Anime that is categorized as this.

5. Loli

Loli is a term that defines female characters that look like children despite their age. These types of characters can show up in several different types of Anime.

A popular example is:

  1. Taiga – Toradora

6. Shota

Shota is a term that defines male Anime characters that look like children despite their age. Again this type of character can shown up in several different types of Animes. Shota characters are not as common as Loli characters are and it can be quite rare to see them in Animes.

7. Loli – Shota

Loli – Shota is a term that defines a male that acts very young for his age and is somewhat girly. This type of character is quite rare to see and there is only one character that fits into this term currently.

Example of Loli – Shota:

  1. Honey – Ouran High School Host Club

8. Harem/Reverse – Harem

Harem/Reverse – Harem essentially mean the same thing. In both cases it is a type of anime where one gender is mostly around the opposite gender.

9. Dere

Dere is a suffix that describes how a character/person acts. There are 4 different types of Deres and this term can be used on both genders.

The 4 types:

  1. Yandere – A person who seems nice and sweet but is actually obsessed with someone they love and will do anything for them to the point where they become violent and deranged.
  2. Tsundere – A person who seems violent on the outside but is actually kind and sweet on the inside.
  3. Dandere  – A person who is extremely shy and later becomes more confident
  4. Kuudere – A person who is cool and calm as well as serious but later shows of a softer, kinder side.

10. Chibi

Chibi is a term used for anime characters that are short and small. The heads are often larger than their bodies and can sometimes have a higher voice. These characters are shown usually in special episodes that air after the season if over.
