As the cliché goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure; but to share something you love with strangers around the world takes a whole new level of courage, altruism, and passion. Recently on Tumblr, I came across a project called Spread the Words Project started by April, an 18-year-old girl. Motivated by her love for books, she decided to give away her used books internationally, completely free of charge. I was absolutely struck by her willingness to not only help those who may not have the finances to buy books, but also just her simple act of bringing happiness to those around the world. If one has had the opportunity to start a project of one’s own, one would understand the extreme difficulty in gathering a fund to even get the project started – and to pay out-of-pocket for mailing books, April has me completely speechless.
Seeing how amazing the project is, especially for a bibliophile, I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to ask April about her project, her inspirations, and tips for those wanting to start a project of their own!
Can you tell us a little bit about your vision for the Spread the Words Project?
Well, I don’t know the exact destination, but I would like for it to continue to grow. I really love the reactions I get from people who tell me that what I’m doing is good, and that makes me feel like I’m making some kind of difference, even if it’s a small one. Who knows maybe one day this will be huge, but for now I think it’s safe to say that I’ll be keeping headquarters for Spread the Words Project in the spare bedroom of my house. I just want to continue making people happy with this project.
Where did you draw the inspiration to start something of your own?
Well, I had seen many people do giveaways for free [on Tumblr], and I do them as well, but I’ve also seen people do projects where they send a book and then that person sends the book to an address that’s give to them. However, I saw a small flaw in that system because I thought “well, what would happen if the person never sent the book on?” The cycle would stop. I just ended up mixing the two together where I give books to people for free, and they can keep it or pass it on. It’s completely up to them.
How did it feel to start something that is so grand in its scale because of the international component of it?
At first, I was completely and utterly nervous because I didn’t think everyone would be so patient with me and I thought it wouldn’t catch on. Now that I’ve actually started to dig into it, I’m so excited and enthusiastic. Especially when someone messages me tells me how much they love the idea or when they tell me they got a book and how happy they are. I’m really just so grateful that everyone is so patient with me and that I’m making them happy despite making them wait.
It truly is an amazing idea! How can others contribute to the project?
The easiest way would be through a donation via PayPal. It’s not a requirement, but it helps me pay for the shipping which helps me get things out faster. The donation button can be found on the side bar of the homepage, and any amount is very much appreciated. I also accept book donations, which is when people send me their old books to send out. The address for that can also be found in the side bar of the homepage. If any one ever had a question about either of those things, they can easily message me there.
Is there something you would like to share with those who may want to start their own project but may not have the resources or finances to do so?
Well, I would say, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start of small or join up with a few people are as equally as passionate as you are about whatever it is your doing and make sure they’re committed to it. As your project grows, your ability to do more with it should grow as well. Oh and just be optimistic and enthusiastic, their [sic] will probably be a few bumps in the road, but if what you’re doing is going to benefit several people, it’s probably worth it to keep a positive attitude.
We know that you love books – what is the one book you absolutely cannot live without you believe everyone should read? What impact do you think it had on the project itself or on your life?
Well, I don’t think I can pick one favorite. My absolute two favorites are The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald which taught me so much about how careless the wealthy can be and how ambition is good if your goal is worthy. Another favorite is The Hobbit because I had been a Tolkien fan ever since I was little. However, the book that I think inspires me most and had a big impact on me is Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. That book just sends such a good message, and I honestly think that no matter how old you are, that you should go out and read that book.
The Spread the Words Project is a simple idea, but, needless to say, it has a remarkable potential to become a renowned international project. All it takes is some inspiration, passion, and perseverance to make a difference in the world!
