For the past six weeks, I have committed to my school’s track and field team. At first, I wasn’t thinking how this experience would make any change in my life. I was wrong. In these six weeks, I learned an important life lesson.
It was my first time joining a sports team. I wasn’t looking forward to it. From the first day of tryouts, I never gave up. This was the lesson I learned from my coach and my fellow teammates. This wasn’t about you anymore. This was about the team. You are a part of the team.
In this experience, I never felt left out. There always someone there watch after you. I met many friends in these six weeks. I wasn’t good at running, but the coach didn’t cut me off. He wanted to see the effort of each student he coached. Results were important, but having fun and sportsmanship was the key.
Many of us think that we are not an athletic person. Sports are not my thing. Think again. Don’t feel afraid, when you are in high school, it is important to try new things. You never know what you are good at.
Being in a Calgary public school has brought me many surprises. Many of you don’t feel this way because you are used to it. In my old school, I never have this chance. This is the reason I do my best to challenge new things. Time went fast. In no time, you will be finishing high school.
Joining a sports team is not forever, but the memories you have will last. This is where we meet new friends. So when you hear your school has a sport, try out. Go for it!
