Recommendation: Your Lie in April

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, also known as Your Lie in April, is an anime adapted from a manga series of the same name. It follows Kosei Arima, a piano prodigy nicknamed “the human metronome” for playing just as the composer has written. However, he withdraws from the piano after the death of his mother. He meets Kaori Miyazono, a temperamental violinist who isn’t afraid of taking risks in her playing and going her own path. Kaori changes Kosei’s outlook on life and helps him break out of his shell, while Kosei affects her life in ways unknown to him.

Your Lie in April has nice animation, yet the plot is quite predictable from near the start, with the ending not being much of a surprise. I thought that many moments are quite heavy on the drama and cliché. However, the music in this anime is stunning. Several episodes are centred around classical music competitions, with splendid performances. The other non-classical music throughout is also beautiful. Despite the cheesiness in some of the things said, this anime is inspiring and tragic and lovely.

If you want to listen to some good music or if you need encouragement to make you practice an instrument, I recommend watching Your Lie in April.
