First, a message from Hemlock: “Hello. You may call me Hemlock. I would like to be your friend, but we must be secret friends. I seek no personal glory or fame. I wish only to craft things of beauty.”
I am Hemlock was originally a pseudonym used by singer/songwriter Trevor Deley to release his EP Robert in order to market the album to complete strangers before being officially released. The purpose of the project? To observe the differences in response towards album from people, before and after he revealed his identity. The response, which was somewhat expected, was that complete strangers felt more comfortable vocalizing feedback an critiques about the album, when he was using his anonymous alias.
Upon inquiring as to what the significance of the name Hemlock was, Trevor Deley informed me casually that this was the name of the poison used to execute the Greek philosopher Socrates back in 399 BC. To Trevor, it symbolized the murder of reason. Alas, I should have expected as much from this third year student at Carleton University, minoring in none other than philosophy.
Here is one of the three videos currently available, accompanying the the track Hospital Wings on the EP.
