What most people don’t know about yearbooks

At the end of every school year, you receive your yearbook. It is full of memories, funny photos, and pictures of your crushes. Before school ends you fill it with friends’ signatures and it is something you treasure for the rest of your life once you take it home. What most people don’t stop to think about is where it came from. Who put it all together? Who took all the pictures?

Behind this yearbook  is a devoted yearbook staff who voluntarily works on it several hours a week for the entire school year.  Without these kids, there would be no yearbook, no school memories, and nothing for your friends to sign.  People do not truly realize how much effort and how many hours are put into the creation of the yearbook. I have been part of my school’s yearbook team for the past two years and I have come to realize how under-appreciated we really are. Student council gets the publicity and the attention of the school and the sports teams get their cheering crowds. All the while, even though we put the most time into our project, nobody knows who us yearbook kids are, never mind that, most people don’t even know there is a yearbook team.  So next time you receive your yearbook, think of the kids behind it and the effort they put into it so you could have something to remember your high school years by, or maybe even join it yourself.

Hi, I'm Moriah. I was born and raised in Calgary but my mind prefers to live in the fantastical realm of literature (I love reading!). I play the piano and I am also very passionate about music. I am a total math geek and I have watched the Lord of the Rings movies a countless number of times.

  1. I wholeheartedly agree!

It is so difficult to find time to take pictures of all clubs and teams and represent every department in the school. In addition, we have to write paragraphs, get lists of student names and everything.

And students STILL complain about the yearbook.

It’s very difficult to design and get good quality pictures and write interesting paragraphs when for one, the yearbook team is small (which happens in schools that aren’t that big) and when students don’t want to contribute by allowing the yearbook team to take pictures of them, or just submitting pictures.

  2. That is so true! The year book staff works harder than most of the other clubs! They have to be at every event to capture all those awesome Memories!!
