Flash!

A flash mob is…

A group of people who organize on the Internet and then quickly assemble in a public place, do something bizarre, and disperse.

Generally, flash mobs are a means of artistic expression.  Over the last few years – as I’m sure you may have noticed – there have been a bunch of flash mob YouTube videos that have become super popular.  With all the singing and dancing involved in each, it’s easy to see that these flash mobs are artistic, but they often double as publicity stunts (the first flash mob I saw on YouTube was from T-Mobile, and the latest one I’ve seen is from Glee/Fox), and I even know a few people who have organized flash mobs of their own.  We’ve seen people declare it Hammer Time, and even Oprah got into the spirit this year…  No matter what they’re purpose is, they are ridiculously entertaining, so as the decade comes to a close I thought I would share a few of the most well-known flash mob vids from the past few years with you:

I dare you to resist the urge to get up and dance after seeing the above.  There are tons of fantastic flash mob videos out there, so feel free to share your faves in the comment section below!

MashPop

We’ve talked about year-end countdowns, and there are tons when it comes to pop culture, whether it be music, television, film, etc.

I recently came across this video from DJ Earworm called, “United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It on the Pop),” which eliminates the need for me to pick a favourite song or video for the year of 2009, and simplifies things by mashing all of the most popular tunes (and their corresponding music videos) from the year into 4 mins. and 45 secs. of pop awesomeness.

Bonus points to the reader who can name all the artists and their songs that appear in this video (leave it in the comments!) 🙂

Sports Legends: Edition 2- Soccer

0

This is the second in a series of posts dedicated to athletes who were legends in their respective sports!

Today’s Sport: Soccer

There have been many fantastic players who have shaped the world of soccer today.  However, the greatest of all time would have to be Edison Arantes do Nascimento, or “Pele.”  He dominated the game for over two decades, and his passion on the field was unmatched.

Throughout his career, Pele has been given many awards, including Athlete of the Century, and was inducted as a member of the American National Soccer Hall of Fame.  He is the only player to have three World Cup medals, and scored 1280 goals in 1363 games.

Pele’s legacy will last forever; he revolutionized the game around the world, and truly made soccer the best sport in the world.

X-Weighted: Families

0

There’s a new opportunity in Calgary for those of you (and your families) who are looking to start the new year off with a bang.  X-Weighted: Families is a reality show which will be shown on the Slice network that wants to inspire everyone to get healthy in 2010, and to get involved in all the awesome activities throughout the city that are both fun and active.

This sounds like a really wicked opportunity for families in Calgary, and could be a really good bonding and learning experience for everyone involved.  If you’re interested in participating, check out the poster below and chat with your parents about it – you could be a TV star before you know it 🙂

The Sounds of Anti-Christmas

1

Now don’t get me wrong I love Christmas and I especially love winter.  I like going skating, drinking hot chocolate and having to deal with my hands becoming lobster claws when I put mittens on, but my favourite part might just be the music.  Dean Martin classics are great, but somedays I like to rock out to the sounds of “Anti-Christmas.”  Here are the ones currently on my list of 25 Most Played Songs:

Fall Out Boy – Yule Shoot Your Eye Out

Blink 182 – Won’t Be Home For Christmas

Something Corporate – Forget December

Death Cab for Cutie (Covers Mariah Carey) – Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Sufjan Stevens – That Was The Worst Christmas Ever!

Now after all that, this song also tops my 25 Most Played Songs…

So make sure you soak up the snow while its here and make the most of this Christmas!

A Harry Potter Update: Listen Up Fans!

1

Earlier this year, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince was released in theaters.  For all of you that may not have had the chance to see it then, it is now on DVD!  On December 8th, the sixth movie was released to the public.  This is definitely my pick for your Friday movie night if you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet.  Take a look below for a brief synopsis:

Harry Potter and his friends are now in their sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft, and in both wizard and muggle worlds, Lord Voldemort and his henchmen are becoming increasingly active.  With a staff vacancy to fill at Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledor persuades Horace Slughorn to come back from retirement to become the Potions teacher, while Professor Snape receives some long awaited news.  Throughout the novel, Harry, together with Dumbledore, must face treacherous tasks to defeat his evil nemesis.

For the few of you that might not be able to make it out to rent the movie, click here for a more detailed synopsis. It does include some major movie spoilers though!

Practical Disasters – Ep. 2

0

Since the holidays are just around the corner, a lot of people are spending time participating in ice-related activities, like ice-skating and ice-fishing, etc.  It is important for you to know how to survive if you are unfortunate enough to fall into the water down below ice.

There are plenty of ways you can fall into an icey lake and become trapped under sheets of ice: not openning your eyes while walking into an ice-fishing site, not ice-skating in a public ground where ice is thick and maintained, wanting to save time by walking across an icy river, the list goes on.

However, if you do fall below ice, here are some tips:

Getting out of ice hole
Crawl and Roll your way out of the ice hole
  1. You must remain calm, and grab on to surface.  Make sure that you are getting out to the direction you came from, as that side of the ice will be stronger to be hold on to.
  2. Stretch your arm onto the ice and kick your leg to get out of the hole, then,
  3. Try to distribute your weight on the ice as evenly as possible.  Do not stand up once you are out of ice hole, try to crawl and roll away until you are far enough to safety.
  4. After you’re safe, get changed into dry cloth and stay warm.  Drinking warm, non-alcoholic fluids would be a good idea; get treated for hypothermia  as soon as possible.

If you see anyone falling into the ice hole, do not get close, but do get ropes and stuff for the person who fell into the ice to hold on to, pull them out.  It is never a bad idea getting more help before you help someone.

Hope you learned how to survive when you fall into ice.  Hopefully you have a safe, dry and warm winter with all your icy activities.  If you missed it, you can check out part one of this series on Practical Disasters here.

Happy Holidays to you all!!!

‘Did that statue just blink and move?’

The answer  is yes,  it actually did, but that is no ordinary statue…. it is a ‘living statue‘!

What is a  ‘living statue’?  It is a person with realistic makeup, and costume who poses very still for a certain period of time, acting like a statue.

There are 8 living statues  scattered throughout Chinook Centre, each different and unique.  My personal favorite is the ‘Wizard’, who looks kind of like Ghandalf and was dressed in a navy blue robe and held a wooden staff.  I thought it was a life size Christmas decoration until he suddenly moved his staff !

Standing for hours barely moving,  that takes a lot of patience and skill.

If you have not seen these living statues at Chinook Centre yet, there is still some time as they will be on display until December 24th.  Their hours are 11AM- 3PM, and 4PM-8PM,  and on December 24th you will only be able to see them between 11AM- 3PM.  I highly recommend going in the morning or some time early in the day,  when it is less crowded so you can have time to look at the statues and not feel rushed.

Unfortunately, I did not take any picture of them…my apologies!  That just means you will have to take a trip to Chinook to see these incredible statues!

Feeling Creative?

Windows’ Paint is soooooooooooo 5 minutes ago.  Thanks to the internet, you don’t even need your own computer, or a pad of paper and a pencil in order to let the artist inside of you roam free.

For the painter in you, there’s Artpad – you can paint and paint (digitally, of course) to your heart’s content and then let your painting “hang” in the site’s gallery, or check out other people’s work (you can even watch how they “painted” it, from start to finish).  Some of the art that people have done for the site is pretty incredible!

Let loose and enjoy 🙂

Awesome Websites: What Does the Internet Think?

0

A few weeks ago I came across this website: What Does the Internet Think?

The premise is simple: it answers the question that the site’s title asks.

Wanna know how people are feeling about Tiger Woods?  How about what everyone thinks about puppies?  Well, What Does the Internet Think? takes a look at the big search engines to find out what the general online opinion is on practically any topic you can think of, and then graphs the results.

Now that you are out of school for the holidays, take a look and enjoy.  And btw, in case you were wondering, “The internet is mainly positive on the subject of puppies, according to results from Google.”

Read This: Storm Thief

2

Storm Thief is a novel by author Chris Wooding.  The novel is set in the future on an island-city known as Orokos.  Orokos is constantly threatened by “probability storms” – random storms that warp reality and can make anything happen.  There is war on the island along with crime and cruelty.  The force of governance on the island is corrupted and ineffective at keeping order and the people are segregated.

The story follows Rail and Moa, two professional thieves.  Their lives change when they discovered a piece of technology that belonged to an extremely advanced and extinct race.  Soon they are on the run knowing that capture means death.  On the way they meet the character of Vago, and the three outcasts make a journey across the islands facing countless threats and making giant discoveries.

This novel explores themes like prejudice, corruption, war, and humanity’s need for order, all in an action packed adventure.  This book is fast paced and intense, but at the same time, it is deep and meaningful.

I would recommend this novel to anyone above the age of 13, but this novel will require a higher level of understanding to truly appreciate it.

The Cons of The Twilight Saga

0

Twilight New Moon teaser movie posterI’m guessing most of you have read The Twilight Saga or at least heard of it.  Earlier this week, Sam posted her thoughts on this popular series by Stephenie Meyer – the pros of the Saga, if you will.  Now here I am to tell the other side of the story: The Cons.  Though the books were better then the movies, the books weren’t that much better…

  • Most of the Twilight books are too easy, and boring.
  • The plot was shallow.
  • The quality of writing was poor.
  • They should be considered childrens books, but the content is inappropriate for children.  There is a lot of violence in the book, and children really shouldn’t be reading romance novels.  The only book in the whole series that was not completely inappropriate would have to be the first one.
  • The Twilight series is cliche and a lot of it doesn’t make sense.  How would it be possible for the Cullens to sparkle in the sun and for no one to notice?  If vampires are so powerful, why would they care about staying a secret?
  • Stephenie Meyer recreated the vampire myth and turned vampires into fake silly mythical creatures. Vampires are not supposed to sparkle in the sun.
  • It also has a limited view of women, and Bella isn’t a very good role model for young girls…
  • …Bella gives up her college plans for Edward, and she constantly needs  to be saved.
  • Rosalie is obsessed with her appearance and very jealous.
  • Men are portrayed as stronger, more intelligent, powerful and independent,
  • Women are portrayed as weak, shallow, and always needing to be saved.
  • Even though Edward has obsessive, violent, possessive, stalker like qualities, hes described as the perfect lover.
  • And honestly…Edward is just kind of a creepy person, lol.

And there you have it, some of the cons of Twilight.  The books weren’t that great, and I think there are a lot of other vampire novels that were so much better.

More Christmas Lights!

We talked about them earlier this week, and in the spirit of the season, let’s chat about them again: Christmas lights.  This time, the lights aren’t stationary… They’re moving!  Here’s what I can tell you about these types of set-ups:

  • Everything happens via a type of rudimentary computer called a “controller.”
  • They cost a lot. (Think $10,000!)
  • They use HUGE amounts of electricity, and the owners usually only run them for short periods of time.
  • They’re awesome! Enjoy!

Is Vinyl Making a Comeback?

5

Image from the music video for 'Spat' by Cut ChemistLast summer, I had the good fortune to peek into a garage sale while walking home and find a record player for the excellent price of $10.  When I brought it home, my dad asked why I was interested in playing records.  My answer was somewhere along the lines of, “Dunno… they’re cool.”

Later that summer, I was in Vancouver visiting relatives and I was able to score my father’s and aunt’s old record collections.  Returning to Calgary with 185 newly acquired LPs, my dad again asked me why I even wanted the records and why vinyl LPs seemed to be coming back into style.  Good question.

The vinyl LP (long-play) is indeed selling more now than it has in decades.  The Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) year end statistics report that the amount of vinyl records shipped in the year have more than doubled from 2007-2008; $56.7 million USD worth of vinyl LPs and EPs were shipped in 2008.  An enormous increase from 2007’s $22.9 million USD, 2008 boasts the highest dollar value in vinyl shipped in a long while.   Although in comparison with other mediums of distribution these numbers are minuscule, they definitely provide evidence of an alleged comeback.

The closest I can come to explaining this statistical increase and answering my father’s question is through speculation.  I believe it may have to do with the popularity of indie music and hipster culture movements.  Indie rockers and hipsters tend to have a certain nostalgia for music and fashions of the past.  Perhaps the rise of independent music and of hipster culture has helped sell more vinyl.

Another possible contributor is the generally accepted fact that vinyl has superior sound quality over CDs and MP3s, making it a favorite of audiophiles and devout fans.  In CDs and MP3 files, sound is recorded digitally, which means the recorded sound is sampled at intervals at a very high rate (usually 44,100 times per second) and little bits of the original sound wave are lost in the conversion process.  Vinyl LPs record sound in a loss-less analog format.  They have a groove carved into them which exactly mirrors the original sound wave.  No information is lost.  This results in a richer, fuller sound.
I cannot really verify the claim that records have better sound quality due to the fact that the speakers I received with my turntable badly need replacement (but for $10, how can you complain?).

In any case, the comeback vinyl is making is an interesting twist towards the technology of the past and something to watch as time passes.  Perhaps the trend will continue or perhaps in a year or two vinyl records will be forgotten again.  I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
