Drake Concert- July 25th

0

“You probably think that it’s too far to even have to care
Well take a look at where you live… What if it happened there?
You have to know the earths to make a change lies within
And we can be the reason they see their flag rise again.”

Who sings these lyrics? He’s an international phenomenon, he used to star on the TV show Degrassi, and he’s Canadian. That’s right it’s Drake, and these lyrics are from his part on the song Waving Flag. This singer/actor is from Toronto, Ontario, and he’s making a huge impact on the music industry, aligning with starts such as K’naan, Lil Wayne, Birdman, and more. The reason I’m telling you about Drake is that he’s coming to Calgary and you have a chance to get tickets!

Drake will be performing at the Big Four Building on the Stampede grounds on July 25th at 7 pm, and it’s sure to be CRAZY!! So get your tickets soon because they’re going to be sold out. Ticket prices range from $75 to $140, so get them quick!

Have fun listening to Drake!  His concerts are supposed to be SICK and I can’t wait to go on the 25th!

One of my Favorite Poems – Snake

0

SNAKE

by D.H Lawrence

A snake came to my water-trough
On a hot, hot day, and I in pyjamas for the heat,
To drink there.
In the deep, strange-scented shade of the great dark carob-tree
I came down the steps with my pitcher
And must wait, must stand and wait, for there he was at the trough before
me.

He reached down from a fissure in the earth-wall in the gloom
And trailed his yellow-brown slackness soft-bellied down, over the edge of
the stone trough
And rested his throat upon the stone bottom,
And where the water had dripped from the tap, in a small clearness,
He sipped with his straight mouth,
Softly drank through his straight gums, into his slack long body,
Silently.

Someone was before me at my water-trough,
And I, like a second comer, waiting.

He lifted his head from his drinking, as cattle do,
And looked at me vaguely, as drinking cattle do,
And flickered his two-forked tongue from his lips, and mused a moment,
And stooped and drank a little more,
Being earth-brown, earth-golden from the burning bowels of the earth
On the day of Sicilian July, with Etna smoking.
The voice of my education said to me
He must be killed,
For in Sicily the black, black snakes are innocent, the gold are venomous.

And voices in me said, If you were a man
You would take a stick and break him now, and finish him off.

But must I confess how I liked him,
How glad I was he had come like a guest in quiet, to drink at my water-trough
And depart peaceful, pacified, and thankless,
Into the burning bowels of this earth?

Was it cowardice, that I dared not kill him? Was it perversity, that I longed to talk to him? Was it humility, to feel so honoured?
I felt so honoured.

And yet those voices:
If you were not afraid, you would kill him!

And truly I was afraid, I was most afraid, But even so, honoured still more
That he should seek my hospitality
From out the dark door of the secret earth.

He drank enough
And lifted his head, dreamily, as one who has drunken,
And flickered his tongue like a forked night on the air, so black,
Seeming to lick his lips,
And looked around like a god, unseeing, into the air,
And slowly turned his head,
And slowly, very slowly, as if thrice adream,
Proceeded to draw his slow length curving round
And climb again the broken bank of my wall-face.

And as he put his head into that dreadful hole,
And as he slowly drew up, snake-easing his shoulders, and entered farther,
A sort of horror, a sort of protest against his withdrawing into that horrid black hole,
Deliberately going into the blackness, and slowly drawing himself after,
Overcame me now his back was turned.

I looked round, I put down my pitcher,
I picked up a clumsy log
And threw it at the water-trough with a clatter.

I think it did not hit him,
But suddenly that part of him that was left behind convulsed in undignified haste.
Writhed like lightning, and was gone
Into the black hole, the earth-lipped fissure in the wall-front,
At which, in the intense still noon, I stared with fascination.

And immediately I regretted it.
I thought how paltry, how vulgar, what a mean act!
I despised myself and the voices of my accursed human education.

And I thought of the albatross
And I wished he would come back, my snake.

For he seemed to me again like a king,
Like a king in exile, uncrowned in the underworld,
Now due to be crowned again.

And so, I missed my chance with one of the lords
Of life.
And I have something to expiate:
A pettiness.

Sled Island: General Impressions

0

We’ve been raving about this four-day festival all year. Last week, the 2010 edition took over the city with over 200 bands at just under 25 venues throughout the downtown core and surrounding areas. This collaborative nature, intended to help festival goers “Discover a Live Calgary”, has helped Sled Island to become a staple event in Calgary’s summer festival line-up.

Although I attended in 2009, I opted out this year due to the ticket price doubling. Instead, I decided to check out the Young Buds shows. When I showed up at the Young Buds Kick Off & Smash-Up Derby, I guess I was expecting to find a bunch of teens who couldn’t go to the 18+ shows ready and waiting to rock out to some bands who had  graciously agreed to play for a younger crowd. As such, I was a bit disappointed when I showed up late to an fairly empty Cantos Foundation. The room was populated by what seemed like pre-teens and their moms. An awkward viewing experience followed.

However, Kids Up Front, a charitable organization that “provides access to arts, culture, sport and recreation for children who otherwise do not have the opportunity”, ‘saved the day’, and graciously provided donated, unused tickets to the mainstage events on Friday and Saturday. Thanks to them, three of us were able to attend the festivities and have a wicked few days.

Conclusion: I would greatly appreciate it if Sled Island would work on its youth-friendliness. Although mainstage is all-ages, the tickets are ridiculously expensive, making it inaccessible for many of us. I appreciate that the 18+ crowd wants to consume alcohol in peace, but I think a big part of fostering an engaged youth community is treating them like the ‘apprentice adults’ that they are.

We’ll be bringing you more posts over the coming days about the great bands that played, and we may even have an interview in store for you. Stay tuned.

Pearson’s 2010 Graduation Ceremony

The exhilarating moment finally came for many graduates of Lester. B. Pearson high school when “walking the stage” would be a reality. The ceremony was momentously held on a late Friday afternoon, 2 pm to be exact, at the University of Calgary, Jack Simpson Gymnasium. Frankly a rather an odd place to graduate, but despite the quaint location, the gymnasium was wonderfully transformed into a regal and formal observance befitting to celebrate the proud completion of our high school journey.

Through a tedious procession, hundreds of Pearson graduates were fitted into brand new red gowns, though the feeling of wearing such ceremonial gowns resembled that of wearing very large curtain drapes- slightly uncomfortable and dragging a bit. However, many of us didn’t mind, as the robes that many graduates donned were associated with pride and happiness, as pressured by conduct, arrived early with friends and family to record the day and our appearances. Our TA teachers, faithfully watching our growth and development, were present to marshal and bear witness our final passage out of high school, as able adults ready to take on the world. Lights flashed excitedly, smiles were worn wear, and organized chaos ensued, as more than 500 graduates gathered together, outside the gym entrances, all anxiously waiting for call time.

Privileged to be a choir member, call time meant for all individuals involved in choir to arrive early, practice our graduation farewell performance in our precedent dressing room, and to breathe. The piece we had chosen to perform is called “Ieligama”, a wonderful African song that called for our choir, without too much difficulty, to move with the beat and to sing our hearts out, for which many of us did.

[youtube 6AI-Q_5n5p4]

Concert band played a lovely rendition of “Heart of the City”, a captivating piece that was also accompanied by “March Pontificale” to introduce the graduates, and “Ceremonial Recessional” as our Pearson graduates exited. Both performances would be the last time twelve graduates would ever perform while still with Lester B Pearson High School, and were defintely overwhleming and tearful notions for many.

Otherwise, actual call time meant lining up with one’s TA, instructed to remain (but not surprisingly failing) to remain formally silent, perhaps to allow the eyes of nervous graduates to frantically search the limited white walls that surrounded us, in the mistaken hopes of calming the mind.

Hundreds of spectators, with piercing, but endearing stares met our own deer like stares as we finally filed into the gym, nosily settling into our folding chairs, as similarly, the bleachers creaked in a welcoming response to our sudden appearance.

Our proper procession was a lengthy one- an impressive three hours of simply sitting on flat-folding chairs and clapping for the speeches made and the names called.

The teachers had advise everyone- students, parents, and valued guests- that everyone must wait and clap at the end of each announced Teacher Advisory (TA) group, but this suggestion was jovially dismissed as each individual’s name was honoured with variations and combinations of loud, joyful and exhilarating clapping and shouts.

Following the insightful and inspirational speeches made by various board members, it was the time for many graduates, to walk the stage. Unable to speak for the other graduates, I will simply state what my thoughts were at that very precise moment in time, my thoughts extremely vivid and unimaginably unforgettable. The gym’s immensity disappeared, and narrowed into the small world of just three components: the stage, the principle and my folder. Holding onto one primitive and simple, but unconsciously collective thought was to: get across that stage! Seriously, your friends will claim that they had hollered in excitement and had clapped furiously when your name had been called, but you won’t hear them. At least I didn’t, for I couldn’t hear anyone or anything, it was as if time had stopped in anyone’s world but my own, and my movements became shuffled and slow. I had posed to have a picture taken with my principal, (my poor principal had to hunch to accommodate for my height), I had received a congratulatory folder, and I had shaken the hands of many important figures, but time caught up to me again, with the moment I could hear my own breath, had indicated as such.

A heart warming and quite astute valedictorian speech ended off the ceremony, happily bragging to you, the masses, that I am privileged to have shared the same T.A as our valedictorian did:

[youtube J38LESp_zJA&feature=related]

My teachers, always the realistic and sensible adults that were now guiding us through the ceremony reminded us, “The ceremony meant nothing until you completed your final exams and diplomas.” Given the privilege to walk the stage, we were not guaranteed our high school diplomas just yet. Many gradates were anxiously anticipating when they would write their Social Studies 30 or English Language Arts 30 diploma, needing to pass both courses to meet the requirements to complete high school.

So congratulation to all high school graduates, Class of 2010! We did it!

Mini Donuts. Cowboy Hats. The Zipper.

The Calgary Stampede is almost here, and there’s lots to do for youth in Calgary! We can go get ourselves a tasty treat from one of the concession stands, go on one of the many rides on the grounds, or go watch a couple shows at the Coca Cola stage!

Teen Nights- Every Friday Night 8-11 pm

0

Every Friday at Village Square and Southland Leisure Centres, there’s a teen night for youth ages 12-17. You can hang out with your friends at the pool, play sports in the gym, and more! There’s a live DJ, lots of music, and tons of people there.

It’s a pretty great place to go on Fridays; it might sound lame but truthfully, I went and there were like at least 100 people there. You can do whatever you feel like and it’s just for teens, so there’s not little kids or older people there. Come check it out once or twice, and I promise you’ll love it!

Regular admission for youth applies, which is $4.95. It’s pretty cheap if you think about it, and like I said before, it’s a great time! So come on out, bring your bathing suit, a towel, and lots of energy! For more info on Teen Nights, click here!

Pump Up Song!

0

We all have those songs that we love to listen to…those songs that just get us going when we need that extra push. Whether you like the lyrics, the beat, or the music, something about the song just lifts you up.

For me, this song is currently The Sky’s The Limit. Can you guess the artist? His three singles are Whatcha Say, In My Head, and Ridin’ Solo………yeah, it’s Jason Derülo!

I found this song quite recently…actually, it was just last week, when I was coming home on the plane from Vancouver. With nothing else to do, I checked out what music Air Canada currently had for their in-flight entertainment system. I found Derülo’s album and this song definitely immediately caught my attention.

I’m not entirely sure what about this song pumps me up. It’s got a standard beat and okay lyrics, but something about it makes it a ‘happy’ song for me. Check it out!

(If you’re looking for more songs by Jason Derülo…

I also enjoy Fallen and Encore. =])

Old(er) music for the new generation…

0

I’m not a new music kind of guy. No, I’m just way to into the past. Well, maybe a little more than that. Let’s  just go with plain obsessed. Everything before the 90’s, I like. Or it could be just anyone living through the 50’s. One thing that is for certain though is the rise of the old music that I love. Whether it’s with Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bobby Darin, and maybe even a little Johnny Cash; Music from the past is resurfacing like crazy as samples for remixes, covers with fresh faces, or even half recorded duets.

One group of musicians though that were popping up through the 50’s to 90’s was the Rat Pack. This group was comprised of three members, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. This is where the majority of my own favorite diddies are. Anyways, The Rat Pack is basically just the group of three mentioned above that did performances together and did many movies, including the first Ocean’s 11. So, yeah, they’re kind of a big deal.

Because of the continuous of stars like Michael Buble or Harry Connick Jr., the entertaining world of showmanship and swing are making a major comeback. Even on the most popular of TV shows, Glee, they make a nice tribute to a member of the Rat Pack, Sammy Davis Jr., as Noah “Puck” Puckerman sings alongside Mercedes Jones one of Davis’ hit songs, “The Lady is a Tramp”. And honestly, they did a top notch job in doing it! If you have not heard this song, click here to listen to it!

Here’s another song that some of you readers out there may know of. In 2004, The Pussycat Dolls (because everybody loves the Pussycat Dolls) made a cover of the song Sway (click here for their cover) . Sway, a year before was also covered by the Juno-winning crooner himself, Michael Buble (here’s his!). In 1954 two recordings of Sway were released. One was not very popular, as you cannot even find a recording of it anywhere on the Internets. The other, however, became a instant success! This recording was released by none other than the Italian crooner, Dino “Dean” Martin (for the original!). Take a listen to all three and you will see how different each of them is but in a way, still has the same kind of crooning romance the last one before had.

I am awfully looking forward to this revival of all my favorite music. So what do you guys think? Are you into the two modern day crooners, Buble and Connick? Or, are you just ready to bury the hatchet on the past and move onto some autotuned goodness? To go gaga over clock $ound$?

Harry Potter’s final chapter

0

On Nov 4th, 2001 a movie that amazed everyone was presented and that’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. Over 10 years later this movie is still adored by many young people and is finally coming to an end. Joanne Kathleen Rowling wrote the last book of Harry Potter and the movie is coming out. The main actor in this movie Daniel Radcliffe (Harry James Potter) has changed from a young child to a mature and teen and so has his friend Rupert Grint (Ron Billius Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione Jane Granger). It is sad to see the end of Harry Potter but it is also exciting to see the final battle between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.

The movie is presented in 2 parts while the 1 part is going to in theater in Nov 2010 and the second part will be released in July 2011. There will be anxious fans because the second part is a half year away from the first part, but a good movie is always worth waiting for, right?

FIFA World Cup- The Final Four

0

On Sunday June 11th, two teams will face off in the finals of the FIFA World Cup to determine what nation will hold the title of 2010 champion. However, we still don’t know who those two teams will be.

Uruguay and Holland face off on Tuesday at 12:30, and Germany and Spain play tomorrow at 12:30. All four teams have beat tough opponents to get here, and now their toughest challenge awaits if they want to make it to the final.

Uruguay beat Ghana in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals, but many say that they do not deserve to be in the semis. In extra time, Ghana was about to score when a Uruguay defender, who was standing on the goal line, swatted the ball out of the air to save the goal. Ghana missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay went on to win the game.

Germany had an easy ride in the quarterfinals, beating Argentina 4-0. The German side is one of the favourites to win the cup, due to their mechanical efficiency and great skill.

In the quarterfinals, the Netherlands beat Brazil, who were ranked 1st by FIFA going into the tourney and are five time World Cup champions. Wesley Sneijder, their star player, has led the team to victory and is the player to watch in the semifinals.

Finally, Spain has displayed beautiful passing and ball possession skills throughout the tournament, often keeping possession for minutes at a time. David Villa has scored almost all of their goals on beautiful finishes, and will be the key player for Spain against a tough team like Germany.

The tournament gets more and more exciting as we grow closer to the final, so make sure you watch the games and join in on the excitement! For more information on the World Cup 2010 and the teams, click here.

Are you traveling for the summer? Have you ever thought of where you would like to go before you die?

0

A couple of friends of mine have been talking to me about where they want to travel this summer. Personally, I haven’t been to many places outside of North America. I looked up places to visit before you die, and found a list on ten places that look amazing. Click here to see the all the pictures and descriptions of these places.

In this post, I will include some of the pictures, as well as the top ten places. Take a look below:

1. The Pyramids and the Sphinx, Egypt

2. Santorini, Greece (This reminds me of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants)

3. Stonehenge, England
4. Italy
5. Loch Ness, Scotland
6. Pyramid of the Sun and Moon, Teotihuacán
7. Incan Ruin – Machu Picchu, Peru

8. The Golden Pavilion, Japan

9. Bimini: The Road to Atlantis
10. Iceland

What do you think of these places? Do they seem like places you’d like to visit? Have you visited any of these places before?

Calgary is….

1

Usually you’ll find Shot At The Dark bringing you “Acoustic video recordings of your favorite and hidden musical talents in our amazing city” over at Calgary Is Awesome. Recently they shot Hannah Georgas in an abandoned farmhouse, and Said the Whale along 7th Avenue. But this weekend, they’re looking to shoot you.

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

0

I have read many books that involve friendship. But I don’t recall reading a book with friendship as its central theme, until this week. I would have preferred the book to be more modern but that would be an absurd demand.

So this book takes place in the 30s and follows two traveling workers (George and Lenny) trying to make enough money to fulfill their dream – to have their own farm. Lenny is mentally handicapped, he seems to have the strength and size of a bear, but the logic of a child. And so, we have George looking after Lenny from the beginning of the story. When they did find a job at a farm, the reader is introduced to a bunch of interesting characters. But soon our protagonists realize that things will be more complicated than simply making some money and buying a farm.

This novel – though short – is the ultimate story of friendship. Masterfully written to symbolize and foreshadow events in genius ways. I’ve stated that this was a story of friendship, but more broadly, this is a story of relationships (or lack of it) with people and that is represented fairly and intelligently.

The story started of strong but the ending was amazing. I would recommend this novel to all readers 14 and above. I give it a 5/5.

Oil leak’s spread predicted area

0

“Once oil becomes caught in the Gulf of Mexico’s fast moving Loop Current, it could be carried thousands of miles, around Florida, up the Atlantic coast of the US, and then out into the open ocean.” (from BBC news)

As I previously mentioned about oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico’s on April 22nd, it comes to serious environmental problem in the world. The scientist says that it would spread up to the open ocean. They also modelled what would happen if they were to release a coloured tracer dye into the water at the site of the leak.

(About colouring)

“It’s like a food colouring. You inject it into the ocean and watch it disperse,” explains Dr Peacock.

The virtual dye then shows the path that the water – and therefore the oil – could take.

The researchers repeated the experiment several times, using slightly different scenarios, to arrive at a likely spread pattern for the oil.

There are still some aspects to the Gulf of Mexico leak, and the behaviour of oil released at great depth, which are not fully understood.

The scientists say that could have an influence on the accuracy of the model.

“Oil is a little bit different, for several reasons; it undergoes a number of transformations,” says Synte Peacock.

“There is a lot of evaporation in the first few hours, so it changes form.

“People are also skimming it like crazy, and trying to contain it as it comes up from the flow head. So it’s not a perfect analogy by any means, but it’s the closest thing we have right now.”

(Oil Spreading)

“In the Atlantic Ocean there is a Western Boundary Current System, and the Gulf of Mexico’s Loop Current is part of this system,” explains NCAR scientist Synte Peacock.

“So what happens is the current comes up through the Yucatan [Channel, the strait between Mexico and Cuba], and it does a clockwise loop within the gulf, and then shoots out and joins the Gulf Stream proper.

“So when something in the gulf gets caught up within that current, it can get out of there.”

So with that definitely happen? Dr Peacock says: “At some time in the next six months it’s highly highly likely that it will escape from the Gulf.”

The Atlantic Ocean Gulf Stream carries water towards Europe, but the simulations show it is unlikely that oil will be detected that far away.

“Even a year after the spill start date, in our simulations we don’t see any detectable quantities of oil hitting Europe,” says Dr Peacock.

“It’s very diluted within the Atlantic Ocean.”
