A Journey to South Korea: Day 6

0

Today, I want to take everyone to EVERLAND which is the biggest theme park in South Korea and it’s not in Seoul.  It was really easy to get there but it did take me 2 hours.

Everland, located in Yongin, is a huge theme park which includes a zoo, snow sledding, and botanical garden. Everland has three distinct themes, Festival World, Caribbean Bay, and Speedway. Festival World has a global fair, American Adventure, Magic Land, European Adventure, and Equatorial Adventure. Caribbean Bay is a water park that contains swimming pools and fun water facilities. You have to pay separate entrance fees for each theme and since Festival World is the the biggest theme in Everland that was the one I chose.

When I got in the first facility I went to see is the roller coaster and the one in Everland is the biggest and steepest wooden roller coaster in Asia, pretty impressive.

This is the picture I took on the tram. The thrilling part was the 70 degree angle which was very scary when you are sitting at the first roll and looking down while you are on the top. I sprained my neck when I was riding this roller coaster but luckily I survived.

After playing some more facilities I went to the zoo to see some cute AND dangerous animals. There was a place called wild animal world where you ride a bus and go around a small forest that contain many wild animals which includes white tiger, lion, bear ex.

This bear came up to our bus and pounded on the window to say hello.

After the ride I just walked in the zoo to observe some animals

This is the cutest animal I found in Everland and is a specie of fox. I stood there for 5 minute just to see them.

There was a part that’s designed for tourist to see baby animals and here is a baby monkey.

As I finished with the zoo I needed to find some where to hang out while I waited for the afternoon parade so I went to the rose garden and it was beautiful.

Around 6pm I finally saw the parade which is just beside the rose garden.

The squirrel in the picture actually ran to me and pated me on my shoulder. Guess he didn’t want me sitting there by myself.

There are more shows at night and more facilities that only open at night but unfortunately I had to go back to my hotel because it was getting dark and ended my fun day.

Later School Start Time = More Productive Teens

0

A study conducted at a school in Rhode Island has proved that students are more motivated and more productive when the school day starts later. The start time was delayed from 8:00 to 8:30, and the results were fantastic.

Dr. Judith Owens, a sleep scientist, found that if the school day started later, there was a sharp decrease (80%) in the number of students getting less than 7 hours of sleep. As well, in the surveys the students took before and after the experiment, they were asked to rate themselves on terms of happiness. The results showed that during the later start time period, the number of students who rated themselves as depressed or unhappy decreased by close to 20%.

The point is, teenagers need sleep, and starting school later would help them be more focused and less depressed. Half an hour can make a difference, and hopefully the school boards realize that!

Weather Forecast

0

Sometimes we’d like to predict the weather without reading a forecast. Long before technology, we had to rely on the observations or patterns of environment elements. This is even useful in our current life.

Here’s some steps. (from http://www.wikihow.com/Predict-the-Weather-Without-a-Forecast)

1. Check the grass for dew at sunrise. If the grass is dry, this indicates clouds or strong breezes, which can mean rain. If there’s dew, it probably won’t rain that day. However, if it rained during the night, this method will not be reliable

2. Remember the rhyme: “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.”

–  If you see a red sky during sunset (when you’re looking to the west), there is a high pressure system with dry air that is stirring dust particles in the air, causing the sky to look red. Since prevailing front movements and jet streams weather usually move from west to east (see Tips), the dry air is heading towards you.

– A red sky in the morning (in the East, where the sun rises) means that the dry air has already moved past you, and what follows behind it (on its way towards you) is a low pressure system that carries moisture.

3. Detect which direction the wind is blowing. If unable to immediately detect the wind’s direction, throw a small piece of grass in to the air and watch its descent. Easterly winds can indicate an approaching storm front, westerly winds the opposite. Strong winds indicate high pressure differences, which can be a sign of advancing storm fronts. Deciduous trees show the undersides of their leaves during unusual winds, supposedly because they grow in a way that keeps them right-side up during typical prevalent winds

4. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and smell the air.

  • Plants release their waste in a low pressure atmosphere, generating a smell like compost and indicating an upcoming rain.
  • Swamps will release gasses just before a storm because of the lower pressure, which leads to unpleasant smells.
  • A proverb says “Flowers smell best just before a rain.” Scents are stronger in moist air, associated with rainy weather.

5. Watch the clouds

  • Clouds going in different directions (e.g. one layer going west, another layer going north) – bad weather coming, probably hail
  • Cumulonimbus clouds early in the day and developing throughout the day – greater chances of severe weather
  • Mammatus cloud (formed by sinking air) – thunderstorm is dissipating (not forming)
    Mammatus cloud formationsAltocumulus mackerel sky
  • Cirrus fibratus, aka “mare’s tail”

Cirrus clouds high in the sky like long streamers – bad weather within the next 36 hours

  • Altocumulus mackerel sky

Altocumulus clouds like mackerel scales – bad weather within the next 36 hours. The old sailor’s saying for these types of clouds is “Mares tails and mackerel scales, tall ships carry short sails.” Another is “Mackerel skies and mare’s tails, sailors furl their sails.” Mackerel skies and mares tails formations sometimes appear in the same sky. When that happens, rain is sure to follow the next day.

  • Cloud cover on a winter night – expect warmer weather because clouds prevent heat radiation that would lower the temperature on a clear night.
  • 6. Observe animals. They are more likely to react to changes in air pressure than we are

    • Seagulls tend to stop flying and take refuge at the coast if a storm is coming.
    • Animals, especially birds, get very quiet immediately before it rains.
    • Cows will typically lie down before a thunderstorm. They also tend to stay close together if bad weather’s on the way.
    • Ants build their hills with very steep sides just before a rain.
    • Cats tend to clean behind their ears before rain.
    • Turtles often search for higher ground when a large amount of rain is expected. You will often see them in the road during this period (1 to 2 days before the rain).
    • A very old wives tale says if birds feed in a storm it will rain for a long time, if they don’t it will clear soon.
    • If birds are flying high in the sky, there will probably be fair weather. (Falling air pressure caused by an imminent storm causes discomfort in birds’ ears, so they fly low to alleviate it. Large numbers of birds roosting on power lines indicates swiftly falling air pressure.)

Sled Island Artist Spotlight: Girl Talk

    2

I wasn’t planning to attend Sled Island this year due to the financial costs but the great people at the Kids Up Front Foundation kindly gave myself and some other youth the opportunity to check Sled Island.  The Kids Up Front Foundation provides children and youth the opportunity to attend events that they wouldn’t normally be able to attend.  I know my friends and I wouldn’t have been able to attend because of the costs and many of us are trying to save up for school.  Thanks to the Kids Up Front Foundation for this amazing opportunity.  For more information or to donate your unused tickets please check out their website.

The headliner for the first night of the 2010 Sled Island main-stage was simply one man playing two laptops. Despite the dull mental picture that description promotes the performance was phenomenal. Girl Talk is one of the most involving live music experiences I’ve had the pleasure of attending.

Gregg Gillis, AKA Girl Talk exists within of subgenre of electronic music called mashup. What this typically entails is taking usually two or more pre-existing songs, sampling them, cutting them up, and mixing (or mashing) them together into a completely new song. A mashup you may be familiar with is “United State of Pop 2009” by DJ Earworm which surfaced near the end of 2009, mashing up the top 25 Billboard hits. DJ Earworm has also created mashups for the hits of 2007 and 2008.

Girl Talk inhabits a lot of the same territory as DJ Earworm, using lots of songs with high radio play. But perhaps what helps distinguish Girl Talk is that his use of sampling material isn’t limited to hits. Moments after a Lil’ Wayne or Beyonce cut you might hear a sample from a Radiohead or Yeah Yeah Yeahs song, and then some Jackson 5 or Isley Brothers or might be thrown in. And that’s what makes the live show so compelling. Particularly with an indie-oriented Sled Island crowd, you’re part of an audience that knows the whole spectrum of Girl Talk’s material. Everyone sings along to the nonsense sounds in Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, recites the verses of Jay-Z’s 99 Problems, and vocalizes with the choral arrangement in Arcade Fire’s Wake Up.

In addition to the music, plenty else is done to make the performance a party. Audience members are invited up on stage to dance alongside Gillis as he mixes, pop-able inflatables containing confetti are used, and toilet paper is shot over the crowd through use of a modified leaf blower. Everyone in a five meter radius of the stage is dancing wildly, though space is very limited. Crowd surfers are not uncommon.

If you’d like to check out Girl Talk’s recorded you can download his most recent album Feed the Animals at his record label’s site. It’s ‘pay what you want’, and $0.00 is an option.

    Pearson’s 2010 Graduation Banquet

A graduating senior at Lester B Pearson High School, we were offered the chance to celebrate our graduation at a banquet, located at the BMO Center, providing the opportunity for students to display their beautiful, jewelled and satin dressed and their smart, pressed and expensive suits. Similar to prom our adjacent neighbour, the States, celebrate, this year’s theme of Eastern Fusion called for mysterious dim lighting, patterned pale orange umbrellas, and vintage eastern lanterns and decoration to adorn our hall.

I’ve decided to write about my experience at my school’s graduation banquet in hopes of informing and exciting future youths as to the rewards and possible experiences they might become involved in, perhaps inspiring them to graduate and come out of their long journey of learning, participating in an experience, I believe, was filled with memories that I will never forget. Besides, after all those exams, all-nighters, assignments and stress, I’d figured it was time to unwind and take a little to celebrate graduating with my graduating class.

The event was truly a memorable one, as my friends and I were hopelessly the “noisy neighbours” at our table, distracting them from their nice, quiet meal. Initially distraught at only being permitted to sit eight family and friends at a table, we were luckily able to order tables that were in close proximity of my other various friends and their family members as well. The night was a whirlwind of chatter and conversation, as our waiters and waitresses served us a pre-determined meal, by our Grad Committee of: Mediterranean Couscous Salad with Tomatoes and Chickpeas, our Entree as an Oven Roasted Chicken Breast with vegetables and Pesto mashed potatoes, and our dessert as a Cranberry Chocolate Truffle Cake with Passion Fruit Coulis.

However, no one in mind paid the $ 70 tickets for the food, because frankly, besides my table noting the apparent dryness of the whole meal, and overly sweet dessert, many graduates chose to skip the banquet altogether, and opted to eat at other arranged venues, or made other arrangements to celebrate the night. However, in my opinion, the $70 was a small price to pay for the priceless memories of seeking out my classmates sparsely spread out throughout the hall, being delighted surprised at the unexpected individual donning princely or princess-like garments, and enthusiastically taking photos with them, or of them.

To cordially end the formal evening and our dinner, before any dances were initiated onto the dance floor, inspirational speeches and performances were presented to entertain, salute and toast the Pearson gradates of the night.

Provided below are some videos of the night of: an amazing vocal performance and a salute to the graduands of 2010, to allow you to experience Pearson’s amazing night as well!

Bartimaeus Trilogy: Book 1, The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud

    1

After the success of the “Harry Potter” novels, book shelves have been filled with novels about whites and wizards, unfortunately more of them aren’t worth reading. But there are a few that are better than worth reading, some of them are worth reviewing.

The first thing I noticed about this book was its original take on the “wizard genre”. In this alternate reality, witches and wizards are not powerful themselves, there power lies in there ability to summon and command demons of different levels. But there is a catch, if the summoning is done incorrectly or the demon is too powerful for the “summoner” to control, the demon may end up killing the “summoner”.

The second piece of originality I detected was that in this alternate world, society is ran by wizards and witches – they are the upper class. Where as in “Harry Potter” the beings of magic are hidden from the general population.

There are 5 main levels for demons, in order of increasing strength are: imps, foliots, djinni, afrits and marids.

This story follows a 12 year old apprentice named Nathaniel, who secretly summons the notorious djinni Bartimaeus, before he should even be able to summon even an imp. Bartimaeus is sent to steal a mysterious amulet, that’s when the problem starts.

The story switches perspectives between the often immature Nathaniel, and the wisecracking Bartimaeus.

Bartimaeus truly stands out, being powerful, funny, cynical, intelligent and wise. Where as I found Nathaniel to be quite boring, and annoying at times.

Over all, this book is a great page turner. To be honest, I enjoyed this more than the philosopher’s stone, probably because this story is darker and more mature, but maybe, just maybe, it’s because this book is actually better. I recommend this novel to readers 13 and above. I give it a 4.5/5

    It’s Good, It’s Deep Fried

    2

We previously posted about the Stampede and here is a quick delicious food review on the cool deep fried foods the Stampede has to offer.

Deep fried Oreos– It’s a spin on ‘milks favorite cookie’! If you thought Oreo’s are yummy then deep fried Oreo’s may just give your taste bud an explosion of deliciousness. It definitely tastes better than it sounds. For $5 it comes with 5 deep fried cookies, sprinkled with icing sugar and drizzled with chocolate syrup. They kind of look like chicken nuggets. The outside is crispy and the inside is soft but the hard cookie like texture is still there. Definitely recommend it!

Deep fried cheesecake– The look could be quite deceiving because it looked nothing like a cheesecake… or a cake! It is shaped like a bigger version of a spring roll and the inside is a warm liquid like cheesecake. Personally I am a big cheesecake fan so I liked it, though I wished it did not look so much like a spring roll.

Deep fried coke – Yes, a deep fried liquid! I had it last year but I didn’t see it this year at the Stampede. It looked like bits of batter and it came in a small sized coco-cola cup. I did not like it that much because it tasted more batter than coke in my opinion.

Deep fried jelly beans– A fan of these colourful chewy candy? Now you can get them deep fried! The jelly beans are not individually deep fried but instead there are a few in a deep fried ball sprinkled with icing sugar. This was kind of a let down because I was not expecting it to be like that. The outside is crispy and inside it is doughy with the jelly beans melted on the outside but the core still retained the chewy-ness. It was a good experience to try it but I would not get it again because I don’t like jelly beans that much. Be warned they stick to your teeth!

I have yet to try the deep fried strawberry short cake, and snicker bars which from the display looked like a corn dogs.

Which deep fried food at the Stampede do you like best?

    Playlist for the Planet

    0

Music, music music! Everybody loves music! You know who else loves music as much as anyone else? It’s Canada’s own environmental activist, David Suzuki! Suzuki has proclaimed that thhere shall be a playlist for the environment. Or, more appropriately, a Playlist for the Planet.

But, the thing that is really nifty about this is that they are allowing all of us, of the true north, strong and free, to enter the playlist! That’s right, your music, no matter the age (as long as it’s comprehendible) you can enter your song for the playlist and contribute to our nice little (mostly) harmless planet. Suzuki says, To quote from his letter,

I believe that an environmental anthem can help bring the overwhelming public support for the environment to its rightful place. Together, we can inspire thousands of Canadians to gather around song.

“Imagine artists from every genre of music joining in to show the diversity of Canadian thoughts, feelings and ideas about how we can reconnect with nature. When the dust clears, I hope we will emerge with an anthem that we can all sing along to!” (To read the whole letter, click here)

And your song may get onto the CD that’s coming out this October. You can ALSO get an awesome Gibson guitar from Long & McQuade as a prize!

Artists among the playist include the “classic” band D.O.A and artists such as K-os and Sarah McLaghlin are also featured in this playlist. And maybe even you! (Sorry for the tackyness there).

You can got to the CBC radio 3 website where you can enter your song here.

Or, if you would rather just liten to some music, click here to listen to some environmental  harmony!

You have until August 15 to come up with a song that in someway contributes to the environment we all love and adore so much! What are you guyss waiting for? Get to it! 😀

A Journey to South Korea: Day 5

    2

If you like Korean dramas then you must have seen Winter Sonata.  It was such a touching love story and because of it I went to the film scene where they shot Winter Sonata.

There is one scene where the female and male main characters were sitting on a bicycle and riding through a road in the wood. This was shot in Nami Island and in order to get there you have to take lin 3,7 or 9 subway to the Express Bus Terminal then you can take bus to Nami Island which is about 3 hours drive.  Because it’s an island you have to take a ship as well but its luckily a short ride. The entrance plus the ship is about 8,000 won and the bus cost is about 15,000 won. The reason for the long drive is because Nami Island is not in Seoul instead it’s in the province beside Seoul called Chuncheon which is a beautiful place full of Korean culture.

    null

Nami Island is famous because of Winter Sonata, so many business men are using the drama to earn big money. Since there is the scene of riding bicycles, there for many couples went there just to get the experience same as the characters in the drama.

    null

    null

The picture I took of the scene is the top one and the bottom one is from the drama. The birches are very tall and it looked peaceful. Imagine walking slowly in this kind of environment and is just feels romantic.

    null

Many couples have came here to leave their mark of love.

After Nami Island I went to Chuncheon city for lunch and the most famous food there is their Chicken hot pot. It is best if you eat this with 2 or 3 people because it is really big and you will be very very full if you eat all by yourself.

Lastly I present to you a music video from Winter Sonata
