Halloween Party Ideas!

1

Throwing a Halloween party and have no clue what to do? Here are some fun and random ideas you can do for Halloween!

1. Trick or Treating

Stock photo

The most basic and popular one of all. Go trick or treating! Some people might think that after you turn 13, you’re too old to go trick or treating. But whom are we kidding? Trick or treating is fun, always was, and always will be. Don’t ever think you’re too “mature” or too “old” to do something. This Halloween is on a Sunday, so let go and have fun! Let the child in you out (;

2. Potluck

Throw a potluck with some of your friends! Better yet, a cultural one. Pick a designated house to hold this event. Tell all of your friends to bring some kind of food from their culture. Have them prepare the food at home, or at the place where the potluck is located. Make sure that the food is nice and warm! With all of the delicious food, it should be a blast!

3. Dare Night!

This idea was taken from an episode of One Tree Hill. Split your group of friends into two teams. Then create a bunch of crazy dares that you and your friends can do. Try not to make them too extreme, or something that could get you into a lot of trouble. Put the dares on cards, and have an extra card from time to time that indicates a BONUS dare. Whichever team completes the most dares at the end of the night, wins. Everyone will have a night to remember!

4. Costume Photo Shoot

This will be especially fun for a group of girls. Have all of your friends dress up in any costume they wish. Then get a parent, of even one of you, to take pictures of each of you. Encourage everyone to do all kinds of crazy poses! Then have group pictures. If possible, change into different costumes. Print the pictures out afterwards, or post them on a site. That way you can have memories of that night forever!

5. Create Your Own Haunted House

Even with only a week left till Halloween, it’s not too late to create your very own haunted house! First you must decide on what space you want to use. It could be just the front and back yard, or even the garage. Or you can go just one area in your home. To go full on out, you can even use your whole house! You would have to find a way to lead the trick-or-treaters in the right direction so they aren’t wandering all around your home. Change your light bulbs to light bulbs of different colors. Get help from friends and family members to spook the people in your haunted house. Make sure to add all sorts of crazy scary things. Hang a dead skeleton, have big spider webs, decorate your walls and doors. The possibilities are endless. Don’t hold back and have fun with it!

6. Seven Deadly Sins Party

This one would be holding a party with the theme of the Seven Deadly Sins. Have your friends dress up as one of the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Lust, Freed, Envy, Sloth, or Wrath. Then have games that represent each of the 7 sins. For example, for Pride, hold some kind of contest. Maybe have a costume contest. The person has to describe why they believe their costume is best. For greed, have some kind of money game. You can create fake money and play some kind of game that involved money. Those are just a few of the endless ideas.

7. Murder Mystery Party

Halloween is the perfect holiday of the year to hold a murder mystery party.  Murder mystery can be easy to set up, or hard to set up. However, the end result will always be fabulous. Go to the site below to learn more about how to create the perfect murder mystery party.

8. The Amazing Race

This is an “ Amazing Race” themed Halloween Party. It will take some extra work, but will be worth it in the end. Have your party members set into different teams. Then create different tasks that they must accomplish. Your clues can be located around different spots around your neighborhood. Maybe even have some of your neighbors give out the clues. Be creative!

Wong Fu Productions: YouTube Sensations

0
[youtube vC_ycDO66bw]

What are the chances that a simple video of you and your friends joking around could get a million views? For Wong Fu Productions a simple short called “Yellow Fever” is what sparked their stardom. It was a short comedy about how white men always steal the Asian girls from the Asian guys. This video alone has made millions of views, and has been reposted dozens of times by other YouTube users.

Wong Fu Productions is an aspiring production company, who had no aims of making YouTube video production their full-time jobs. The three members Phil, Wes, and Ted were brought together at UC San Diego. Ever since this dynamic group has created a wide variety of videos for their dedicated fans, such as comedies, shorts, music videos and video blogs. With a little under half a million subscribers they have become a YouTube favorite to be watched on a Friday night.

I recommend everyone to watch some of their videos. They are so entertaining, I caught myself watching clip after clip. It was truly inspiring to see a group of people turn into celebrities over videos on a website. Not only that but since YouTube pays high viewed members money for views, you are able to make a living off of it! YouTube has changed our lives as we know it. Just five years ago there was no such thing as YouTube and now it could be argued that it is as popular as Google.

Will you be a YouTube sensation?

Some creative ideas for making money in the winter!

Well, you COULD get a part time job… it pays, but otherwise where is
the fun in that? If you’re not willing to follow someone else’s hours, you should start your own business! Try using one of the ideas below!!

Shoveling driveways: it may not be that glamorous but everyone
needs it done. So grab some hot chocolate and a shovel and go door to
door!

Caroling and selling cookies/hot chocolate!!!: Are you a good singer?
Do you have friends who would want to come with? Get a group together
and make some chocolate chip cookies and/or some hot chocolate, then go singing door to door with 25 cent cookies and 50 cent or $1 hot chocs!
(only works in December, sorry!)

Selling cookies or other small snacks to companies: If you’re a good cook, you should consider making a deal with companies. You see, companies have meetings all the time, right? And the people who come to the meetings like snacking on things. If there is food at the meetings, it will encourage employees to attend, which every company wants. So they might be willing to pay you if you make a little snack for everyone, say, once a week!

Hopefully you liked my ideas, if not you could make up your own wacky idea!!

Review of Alberta Theatre Projects’ The Last Dog of War

The Last Dog of War

Linda Griffiths, image source: Linda Griffiths' website

The Last Dog of War is the personal narrative of a relationship between a woman and her father as they venture together to her father’s last squad reunion dating back to World War II. WeiJia (my usual partner in blog) and I had the most spectacular chance to watch this amazing production at the Martha Cohen theatre at the Epcor Centre.

The Tell Tale

Welcoming the audience into her personal tale, Linda Griffiths requests that each of the audience members treat her as a family member, as she does likewise, and she quite remarkably accomplishes this task, preventing certain apathy among the audience as mere spectators to the story she weaves. She often explains the common norms in her family: war, lies and betrayal, for her adopted family of the audience to understand the strange behaviour behind Linda’s actions. Linda’s lifestyle has evolved around the concept of war, her imaginative bits and pieces of a solider waltzing and the romanticized fantasies of dogfights in the sky. However, Linda does not have the whole story of a soldier’s experiences in World War II, as needed to launch a documentary on the history channel and attain fame.

San Jose Sharks vs. Calgary Flames 4-0 Victory!

0

The Flames have done it again, beating out the San Jose Sharks for their first road game loss! The battle was epic and Flames came in with a win, putting them back on top of the Northwest board.

1st Period

This determined it all, the Flames came to the ice with fire, pushing the puck to the San Jose defense zone. The Flames took action with the first power play scoring at 4:12, all thanks to Rene Bourque, who had just recently come back from a head injury. His tremendous work sent the Flames on a roll. But before you knew it, Ryane Clowe of the San Jose Sharks and Tim Jackman went at it! The fight fuels the Flames to score again, thanks to our beloved Iggy and his assistant Tanguay! They came back less than two minutes later and score another. It’s 2-0 now, and the momentum just keeps building. The Flames are built up with adrenaline and just when I thought the Sharks might be back to bite, Conroy flicks it in at 8:36, sending the stadium wild. The exciting first period doesn’t come to a close yet. The Flames just don’t seem to be finished! Rene Bourque comes back again for seconds, with the assist of Tanguay at 11:47. Like they say, “He shoots! He scores!” At the end of 1st period it’s 4-0.

2nd Period

When it comes down to second period the Flames seem to be losing their momentum. The Sharks and the Flames go head to head, with each side balancing each other out. The Sharks got a few great shots. With the Sharks biting back, the Flames didn’t have very many shots on goal, and nothing went in. At the end of second period it was still 4-0.

3rd Period

Third and last, Sharks came in strong, with the ratio of 9-6 shots, the Sharks were going in for the kill, having more chances to score. Thanks to Miikka Kiprusoff the Flames were saved. He blocked all 27 shots thrown at him that night. The defense was great and no shots got in! At the  end of the third the score remained the same at 4-0 giving the Flames another home game victory!

The art of pop-up books

0

If you always feel like your card or project is too plain, then check out this guy Robert Sabuda who made paper arts special.

Robert grew up in the small town of Pinckney. The first time he picked up a crayon, he discovered himself as an artist, and drawing and crafting was all he did. Robert first started to have interest in pop-up arts when he visited a dentist and discovered a pop-up book. From that time on, everyone started giving him pop-up books and cards and he made some of the simple pop-up cards by studying these books.

After that, he dedicated his life to the arts and he started to learn how children’s books are created. He went through many troubles to get to the place he is in today, where he works in a studio in New York with his partner Matthew Reinhart.

Look at all of the amazing pop up books he did for children.

Bishop Carroll Votes

0

As a member of the team of student volunteers who ran the Bishop Carroll mayoral election on Oct. 18, I can say it was a valuable experience. It was so inspiring to see students take interest in civic responsibility and democracy. Volunteers went around to homerooms and distributed and collected ballots. We counted them at lunch, and, by the 3:10 announcements, announced the Bishop Carroll mock election winner.

The results:

A funny spoiled ballot

■737 voters (A 67% voter turn-out!)
■49 rejected ballots  (Including one that had “GO NENSHI!” written all over it with hearts.)

■689 valid ballots (some people voted for dropped out candidates, such as Wayne Stuart and Graig Burrows, thus, they were no longer valid)

The winner: Naheed Nenshi,  with 53% of the votes.  (Nenshi was also the winner of the city-wide Youth Election, but with only 41% of the votes!)

In second: Ric McIver, with slightly more than 20% of the votes.

In close third: Barb Higgins, with 20% of the votes.

The remaining 7% of the votes were for the rest of the candidates.

So was it worth it? Students got really involved, having debates with teachers and supporting their own candidates by wearing certain colours or T-shirts. I wasn’t the only one who stayed up late on election night watching the news. My Facebook feed was a mess of election-related status updates and wall debates. Does this make a difference to the city? Yes. Not only are youth more aware of civic responsibility (and thus, more likely to vote when they are of age), but they influenced their families. As Metro News put it, “Many are crediting the youth vote for the dramatic increase in voter turnout during this week’s municipal election.

Preview of The Last Dog of War: Behind a script with Amy Lynn Strilchuk

Source: Alberta Theater Projects website

Playwright Linda Griffith’s narrates her personal tale of the trip she takes with her father to his last RAF bomber squad reunion. A unique one woman show narrates the war of the then and now: of one between the Allies and Nazis and one of one between a father and daughter. It’s an amazing journey of a daughter and a father and the challenges they over come in theirs wars.

Performing at the Martha Cohen’s theater for approximately month, starting on October 19, come out and watch this play!

Amy
Amy Lynn Strilchuk, Assistant Dramaturg

What goes on behind the script?

What goes on behind the script and who decides if a play will even show? Amy Lynn Strilchuk, Assistant Dramaturg, is part of that process. She’s part of the artistic team at Alberta Theatre Projects that decides which shows will program, and she personally reads and recommends those scripts.

Honest storytelling, an engaging script, engages the audience… so a play that has an active relationship to the audience.”

Amy Lynn Strilchuk, on what makes a good script.

How the Last Dog of War was chosen to perform at the Martha Cohen Theatre

Amy had known about the script for three years. Linda Gyffintith, the author and performer of the Last Dog of War, had been previously invited to present this play at a workshop in 2007, at the same time Linda had written the Age of Arousal for the Enbridge Play Rites festival.  “So we discovered that we can do it in the [Epcor Centre’s] Martha Cohen [theatre]…why not?” smiles Amy.

Past the great script

A great script doesn’t guarantee a performance in the Martha Cohen theater, however. The artistic team, in choosing their program, stand behind Vanessa Porteous, Alberta Theatre Project’s Artistic Director’s phrase: “What does it mean to be alive now?” Amy emphasized “the now,” rather than considering period pieces to understand our relations to those times.

The process of selecting plays can be very slow, as most scripts are known about for a year. These scripts under consideration of be included in the theater program is first piloted in a workshop reading. During the current Enbridge Play Writes Festival, the public are invited to these listening, to hear these scripts in progress. This gives Amy an idea of the “energy that lives between the audience and the play itself… this tells us about the sticky parts are in a play and when we’ve lost them.” For the artistic team, it’s all about the audience engagement. From those initial readings and into rehearsals, tremendous amounts of time and effort transform a play to become fully fledged, to engage a public audience.

The Finished Product

“In rehearsal, its all about getting it on its feet and activating the choices,” said Amy, “rather than getting the script down…we want to build up, not tear it down, and by that point, hopefully all the strong bones of a play are there…and we should have a clear idea of what a play is.”

How Amy got Involved

Dramaturgy was definitely a term I had heard not of until I had to interview Amy, and for her, it was an unknown possibility that had luckily presented itself to her. If you love what you’re doing, you’ll always find a job for it, as was for the case for Amy, having studied dramatic literature at the University of British Columbia. Through the Literary Mangers and Dramaturgy of America, Amy had gathered a sense of dramaturgy and their role in developing scripts, and her advice to get involved? “Go knocking on some dramaturge’s door and offer yourself for free.” Which was exactly what Amy had done, and was able to develop under a wing of a mentor, and sit in a rehearsal hall for experience.

The Challenge

Upon reading several scripts, of varying themes, characters, and lengths, providing feedback may provide to be a challenge of dramaturgy. “For me, it’s supporting the work without taking ownership of the work. By that I mean… the kinds of questions I ask are to open up possibilities for the script, rather than instruct where the play goes next. My style is like, ‘something curious is happening in scene 2. Talk to me about it. What do you want the scene to do to the audience?’ Rather than in red pen, ‘this character needs to go.’”

Dramaturgy is definitely a great “behind the scene” option for anyone interested in plays and their scripts. Thanks go to the Alberta Theatre Projects and Kids Up Front for providing tickets for upcoming performances and allowing youth to become more engaged in the arts!

Music, Music!

Music has become a commodity in our everyday lives. When you’re bored on the bus, when you’re trying to study in the library, when you’re exercising in the mornings, when the person beside you won’t stop talking to you… just pop in your earphones! We have gotten so used to carrying all 10,000 (okay, I exaggerate) of our favourite songs with us everywhere we go that listening to music is common… in fact, it’s becoming boring.

Think about what music had been like for the people who lived before computers were invented. Like in the middle ages, for example. On a special occasion, like their birthdays, if they wanted to listen to good music, they had to especially commission composers to write a piece (keep in mind that there wasn’t a lot of variety of music to select from back in the those days). Then, the composers had to assemble an orchestra, which rehearsed that music a couple hundred times, and finally, FINALLY, the piece is performed for all to hear. How absolutely exciting it must have been to listen to music back then for those poor deprived souls! Nowadays, if you want to hear a symphony by Beethoven, just go on YouTube and poof, there it is. In fact, if you wanted to hear Beethoven all day long, just download the video onto your iPod and keep it forever.

Back in Cleopatra’s days, it was a luxury only reserved for the privileged royalty to be lulled to sleep by a private lute duet. For us, it’s as easy as walking down the street. Just turn on your iPod and put it on repeat. You can even choose to be woken up at the exact time everyday by your favourite upbeat song.

I guess all this convenience has changed the way we perceive the value of music. In the past, people our age used to sit intently for two or three hours listening to a concert. Now, most of us find that to be an unexciting activity. But why? Is it because our attention spans are decreasing due to computer and video game over-use? Is it because we have gotten so used to the short three, four minute upbeat pop songs that are constantly played over the radio? Is it because teachers are assigning too much homework? (YES!)  Whatever the reason, it’s somewhat saddening to see that each and every one of us is slowly losing the ability to sit down for a while and really appreciate the music around us.

To conclude, I would like to share this interesting video I found on TED. It delves into the topic of our perception of music . Enjoy.

The Magic of Olive Oil

0

olive oil

What is it?

Olive oil originated in Asia, but has been cultivated in Mediterranean countries for over 3,000 years. It is obtained from the olive tree where the pulp that is collected from olives undergoes a process of pressing to remove the juices. Olive oil is been becoming more and more popular in North America and has come to replace many household oils. This is because olive oil contains mono unsaturated fats, vitamin E, and is rich with antioxidants. Olive oil is available in many different grades such as extra-virgin, virgin, refined and pure, just to name a few.

Benefits for the Body

Not only do many people enjoy the rich taste of olive oil, there are many health benefits. Research states that olive oil can contribute to lowering high cholesterol, protecting the colon, reduce breast cancer risk, lose weight and many other healthy benefits for the body. One of its major health benefits is what olive oil can do for the heart. A controlled study shows that if you were to rely solely on olive oil then you can cut the risk of coronary heart disease by almost 50% ! (results from the CARDIO2000 case-control study, published in Clinical Cardiology (Kontogianni MD, Panagiotakos DB, et al. taken from http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=132). And although it may seem odd to have so many benefits from a fat, olive oil is rich with antioxidants, and contains MUFA (mono unsaturated fat) which is better than saturated fats found in other oils.

The Beauty of Olive Oil

Not only is olive oil beneficial to use in the kitchen, but it is a natural product that is beneficial for beauty purposes.  Instead of purchasing expensive oil treatments for your hair in salons, try to use olive oil for a deep conditioning treatment instead! You can apply a good amount in to your hair, wrap it in a warm towel for 15 minutes and wash it out for a deep penetrating treatment. Or a simple and easy trick to use olive oil in your hair is to use a few drops (about a dime size or less) and rub it on the ends of your hair so that the oil will hydrate your hair while giving it shine.

Other different ways to use olive oil in the beauty community include:

  • Use olive oil on your skin (face or body) or lips at night and wake up to find that the texture is now smooth and your skin is hydrated.
  • Soak your nails/cuticles in olive oil for 10 minutes, or rub olive oil onto your nails and cuticles to help keep your nails strong and healthy.
  • Tired of paying for expensive makeup removers? Try using olive oil! The rich texture of olive oil will adhere to makeup and remove it easily. Not only is using olive oil around your eyes a good make up remover, but it can also help restore a smooth texture in the eye area and reduce wrinkles!

Recommendations and Storage

Olive oil can “go bad” after improper storage because of light exposure and temperature. It is best to buy olive oil in tinted jars/bottles because it will help block excessive sunlight.  It is also important to keep it away from heated objects so that it can stay in a cooler environment. Extra-virgin olive oil is less acidic than virgin olive oil and comes from the first pressing of the olives. Extra-virgin olive oil is recommended because it is higher in antioxidants and has a more “delicate” taste for cooking.

So now that you know…

There is so much more to olive oil than just a simple kitchen ingredient to daily cooking… try it out! Try using it in dishes for lunch or dinner and use it to your healthy benefit! I highly recommend using it for your skin, hair and nails so that witness for yourself the unknown benefits!

Discrimination against Gay Youths

2
Tyler Clementi
Tyler Clementi

There has been quite a big hubbub over gay rights in the past month or so in America, particularly in the army. The question of whether or not gay men can serve in the military has brought about much commotion and ended when the Pentagon declared that the recruiters must accept homosexual applicants. The general concern is that gay men may have lowered performances than straight men, or that they give off an atmosphere that is of hindrance to the army. Of course, being denied the right to serve in the nation’s army is as if one was denied citizenship.

Whether it is a coincidence or not, there has also been a lot of commotion over the recent trail of deaths of many homosexual teenagers in schools. I don’t consider this an issue over gay rights because I don’t think this should even be an issue. All men should have the right to life and equal opportunities to be successful in society. But quite obviously as multiple examples show, this is a problem in our society, especially when it involves youth.

Bullying isn’t anything new. Ever since we figured out that we could educate children en masse in a facility, it has existed. And ever since we found out there were people with different sexual orientations than us, we have had anti-homosexuality schools of thoughts. Both of these form together to create one social problem, as if they were not severe enough by themselves.

To bring to attention this issue, one can look upon the case of Tyler Clementi, who jumped off the George Washington Bridge. Tyler Clementi was a masterful violinist and a freshman at Rutger University. Clementi had suspicions of his dorm mates, Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, who he believe were secretly videotaping his activities. He was scheduled to perform with the local symphony orchestra when Ravi and Wei uploaded illegally-filmed footage of Clementi onto the internet, which people believe is the catalyst for his suicide. Clementi is one of six suicides that have recently occurred in adolescents on the basis of anti-gay notions, some of which were due to verbal abuse like “You’re so gay.”

Unless suicides are a-ok with you, this sort of thing needs to stop happening and we need to prevent it, but the question is how. Many people have accused the school of not having enough protection and teachings against bullying, thus these events transpired. However, I do not believe this to be the true source of these suicides. If we are to prevent this in the future then we cannot simply focus on one sector of society, but rather the whole. It is not far removed to say that in our world today it is acceptable, especially amongst teenagers, to discriminate and prejudice against homosexual adolescents. There needs to be more support in schools for gay teenagers, but furthermore we need to perhaps change some aspects of our entertainment industry, where homosexuals are endlessly ridiculed.

Perez Hilton, Ellen DeGeneres and Chris Colfer from “Glee” have all made a stance against these atrocities, and so can you. Whether you agree with homosexuality or not, you should recognize that gay people have the same right to life as anyone else. And this extends further than just homosexuality, but you should recognize any sense of racism, sexism or discrimination and prejudice based on any arbitrary reason and stop them. If you know someone who has been subjected to taunts and bullying, support them and help them survive through these years of intolerance. It would also be better if we watched our diction once in a while as homophobic statements may really hurt some people around you, even driving them to suicide.

Realistically I don’t think prejudice and persecution of those different from us will ever be eliminated, so for now we should try to make the best of a bad situation. I will be wearing purple on Oct. 20 to show remembrance to these boys who should be still alive today.

For more information, follow any major news media. Of course, hopefully there won’t be any more news regarding suicides.
