Essential items all girls need in their closet

0

Whether you’re a fashion guru or someone who prefers comfort (although I believe you can be both fashionable and comfortable), this is my list for the staple items you need in your closet, categorized for you!

Tops

1. Tank top or bandeau

No matter what occasion it is, if you ever have a low-cut shirt or dress it would be nice to dress modestly! So invest in at least one tank top (I suggest getting white and black), or if you don’t want an extra layer then go for a bandeau; if you go for something lacy, your outfit will definitely have an extra ‘wow’ factor!

2. Cardigan or light sweater

A lot of the times I just want to wear a cute shirt but feel like a sweater would ruin the outfit. So I go for something flattering! Cardigans are wonderful for those semi-cool days where you want to cover up, but not get dragged down by layers. You can never go wrong with a black cardigan, almost everything in your wardrobe would match them!

3. Comfortable zip-up or hoodie

For days where you just want to be comfortable, a zip-up or hoodie just warms you up like nothing else. You can definitely find some cute sweaters from the colors or design. Take the risk of getting an animal-inspired hoodie (preferably not made out of an animal…)

4. A t-shirt

T-shirts are awesome! They come in so many colors, designs and are extremely versatile (tuck them in, match them with pretty much anything you desire). Plus they’re the most common types of shirts when it comes to merchandise from a TV show, movie, band, and so forth!

5. A dress

Or at least a flow-y shirt. For days when you just want to feel cute…or want to dress up for a special night out, you should always be prepared with at least one dress!

Bottoms

1. A skirt

Whether it be a pencil skirt or a flow-y one, all girls should snap a skirt. If you’re self-conscious about showing off your skin, then why not grab some…

2. Tights or leggings

I recommend wearing something over these, unless you want to show off your bottoms. Something thick enough to cover you and warm you up, but also thin enough to wear underneath other things (skirts, shorts, a long top, dress), is important to have!

3. A pair of good jeans

Whatever purpose your pair of jeans serve, all girls need at least a pair. They are probably the most popular article of clothing, anyways. So why not invest in a good pair? You could grab $10 ones from other places, but the colors usually fade and the fit isn’t always the best. Come on, you deserve to strut your stuff!

4. Comfortable pants

Whether it be for working out, staying at home, or just relaxing wherever; comfortable pants is an absolute must!

5. Stockings

For those days when tights are just too much for you; stockings are a great item to have! You can go with solid colors, or try a crazy design like fishnet stockings!

Accessories

1. A functional scarf

By functional, I do not mean those extremely thin ones that are just for accessorizing; I mean for those days when you’re a bit chilly but do not want to add too many layers to your outfit. Seriously, a great scarf can really make your outfit pop!

2. Handbag or small back pack

For days when you want to go out and relax, you don’t want to carry around your school bag. So find a cute bag where you can store your essentials and

3. Some kind of necklace, bracelet or ring

I fidget a lot, so I like to have at least one thing to play around with while waiting for people. Even though these are small accessories, they can really change an outfit from plain to amazing! Go for a necklace that falls nicely above your neckline or a long one over a solid-colored top.

Don’t like necklaces? Your wrists can be bare and finding some bangles or a leather bracelet will definitely make a difference to your outfit. Or simply go for rings! There are so many possibilities to choose from!

4. Hair clips or a cute hat

When you’re having a bad hair day, hats can definitely spice up your style. They’re also very functional as they can cover your ears from the cold or provide shade from the sunny days. If you’re afraid of getting hat hair, then find some cute clips to make a simple hairstyle more colorful!

5. A belt

Thin, thick, long or functional belts are a must for the wardrobe! You don’t want to go out with pants falling down…or something plain that could have been otherwise accessorized, do you?

So, what do you think about this list? Feel free to suggest some more or voice out your disapproval! If you find this blog useful, then let me know! I may create some more ‘essential’ lists for you…

The Calgary Civic Symphony presents, The Movies: Ludwig & Lenny!

Calgary Civic Symphony
Calgary Civic Symphony

The familiar nostalgia of music made for the movies or fantastic melodies for the silver screens. The Calgary Civic Symphony showcased two composing giants, Ludwig Van Beethoven and Leonard Bernstein. delighted us with beautiful and catchy pieces that leave us wanting to dance or to sing.

Chances are, even if never having never stepped into a concert hall, you have probably heard Beethoven’s music used in the movies, as his music is used quite extensively on the silver screen. It is Beethoven’s beloved (Pastoral) Symphony No.6 that has enraptured the silver screen, from Fantasia (1940) to Immortal Beloved (1944). Three different movements induce feelings of cheerfulness upon visiting the countryside, a gathering of jubilant country people to a fearful thunderstorm. The excellent intertwined sounds of soft wind instruments and the graceful and elegant strings will surely strike a chord of familiarity, up beat delight and rural serenity in any movie buff. The mood of uncertainty and anxiety during a thunderstorm echoed through the concert hall, creating a cinematic sensation of an film occurring on the stage. The Calgary Civic Symphony brings that extra pizzazz in their interpretation that certainly put a little extra jump in the audience’s step.

A highlight of the second set of performances included the oldie but a goodie, the Broadway hit West Side Story (1957). Leonard Bernstein was the highly acclaimed conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, with an enthusiastic ability to convey the effects and mood of his pieces and acting of the piece with his whole body. This piece marks a pivotal moment for American musical theatre, as the elegant and electrifying music, dance scenes and focus on social problems make the romantic musical between Tony and Maria a hit. The highlight was the unexpected and delightful presentation of the movement, Mambo of the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story suite. This upbeat piece was performed twice, an unexpected twist the second time. With the lights out and the concert hall pitch black, the lights came back up to reveal a cheerfully and colorfully dressed orchestra, with the conductor, Rolf Bertsch in colourful turquoise, the piece got the audience (including myself) to get up upon their feet and dance to this broad way hit!

Thanks goes to I want to thank Tokie Brideaux @CalMusicEvents for providing tickets for this excellent and uplifting event!

Not Old Enough

0

I love concerts. The adrenaline rush is amazing and the live talent is even better. What isn’t so great is the moment you realise the concert is for ages 18 and older. This doesn’t happen so much with the popular music but for indie and alternative bands they usually play at bars! I always complain and complain to my parents and I am starting to sound like a broken record. I can see where they come from though, if they aren’t that famous they can only play small venues because of the costs, and I’m sure McEwan hall is cheaper than the Stampede Corral. It is just very frustrating to think that all of my favourite bands don’t seem to mind leaving out, the probably very few, younger fans. Also I’m sure I’m not the only teen that doesn’t like all the popular bands. Seeming that underground music and hipsters are one of the most popular trends right now, you would think artists and their management would pick up on that. I know I am ranting and you probably could care less but, I’m tired of watching cell phone recordings of the concerts on Youtube, while eating tubs of ice cream and dabbing my puffy eyes with facial tissues.

The Weekend Recap – World War III

0

Attention MUST be paid!

*WWIII HAS JUST STARTED. EUROPE IS NOW IN CHAOS IN SPITE OF RUSSIAN INVASIONS.*

World in Conflict

Don’t worry, I’m just kidding. This didn’t happen to our real world, but rather at the University of Calgary.

If you were not aware (Hopefully now you are), the University of Calgary held their annual Model UN conference for high school students this past weekend.

tumblr_lyn2qzO22G1r2hszso1_500

You might be asking, What is Model UN?

Well, literally, it is a simulation of the real United Nation Conferences. But more importantly, it gives high school students a chance to experience the importance of diplomacy.

Each school enters the draw for countries a few months prior to the conference, then once the countries are assigned, the school MUN coordinators are responsible for assigning committee members for each country. I found this slightly confusing when I first started MUN, but basically, let’s say my school got USA, well USA is a member of many UN committees such as, GA 1 DISEC, GA 2 ECOFIN, and GA 3 SOCHUM, and it’s up to the school coordinators to assign students to these committees to represent the USA. Together all delegates of the USA in each committee makes up the delegation of USA.

Committees at the UC HSMUN:

  • General Assembly 1 – DISEC (Disarmament and International Security Committee)
  • General Assembly 2 – ECOFIN (Economic and Financial Affairs Council)
  • General Assembly 3 – SOCHUM (Social, Humanitarian & Cultural Affairs Committee)
  • United Nations Security Council
  • Human Rights Council
  • NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization) – Not a part of UN

United-nations-1

Typically, Security Council and NATO are what we call the ‘Crisis Committees’, simply because throughout the conference, these committees start off with a prepared topic, however, the crisis directors of the committees will spontaneously bring up ‘updated’ information in regards to the actions of the committee members, and introduce new crisis to the prepared topic.

The other committees, the GAs and HRC, do not introduce new information in regards to the prepared topics. When a resolution is passed for a topic, they move on to the next, while UNSC and NATO most often stay in relations to the first topic and work on extension crisises.

Essentially, Model UN is somewhat similar to debate, but conducted in a more diplomatic matter.

If you have a MUN club at school, I definitely recommend in joining, because these annual conferences allows you to extend your social circle, and meet new people. If you’re school doesn’t, then start one yourself!

I was a first year debater this year, and a second year for MUN. Personally, the pressure and intensity in debates stressed me out a lot. But for MUN, because you work together as a collective group, people are often less hostile and more diplomatic. Also, for debate, you MUST speak, however, in MUN you’re not required to talk, but what’s the meaning in attending if you don’t contribute your ideas right?

Usually, it’s better to start off with the GAs and HRC. The GAs, because they are big committees, with over 50 members, and are less procedural than UNSC and NATO, and HRC, although a relatively small committee, but simply because the topics are often common sense, and requires less research.

If you missed the UCMUN, don’t fret because the SWCHSMUN is just around the corner! (just some shameless advertising 😛)

The third annual SWCHSMUN is going to be quite different than previous years, and significantly different from the UCMUN.

Last year as SWCHSMUN 2012, we brought to you new committees such as USNSC (United States National Secureity Council), UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, and UNICEF. Well look out for SWCHSMUN 2013, because it’s about to get better!

Introducing the committees at SWCHSMUN 2013:

  • Human Rights Council (HRC)
  • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
  • Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC; this will be a crisis committee)
  • United States National Security Council (USNSC) vs. the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (PCPC); these will be joint crisis committees
  • GA 1 DISEC
  • Futuristic Security Council (FSC) set in 2033

Here’s a sneak peek trailer for SWCHSMUN 2013!

Video of The Day: Asteroid DA14

0

Travelling closer to the earth than numerous satellites and any other asteroids of the same size, Asteroid 2012 DA14 safely passed by the earth on February 15 without any point of contact.

Despite, the early and accurate prediction of NASA scientists regarding the lack of threat that 2012 DA14 posted, the event still served to reinforce the potential vulnerability that earth is to foreign space objects. As quoted in The Guardian, “An impact would have resulted in immense damage given its 143,000-ton heft, releasing the energy equivalent of 2.4 million tons of TNT and wiping out 750 square miles (1,942 square kilometres).”

All thoughts of humanity’s doom aside, NASA to capture a collage of radar generated images of the asteroid as it passed by. The collage can be found here.

whut up! it’s yo weekly blog

0

So everyone, I had the best week ever because so much has happened. To start with, I got my diploma marks which were terrible. I had a 62 in Biology. I was stumped. I always thought I was fairly smart and this crushed that entire ideal. The cringe worthy empathy and the “it’s okay” are the most annoying. I felt really ashamed as all my peers had much better marks than me. It took some time but eventually I got over them. You can be full of disbelief and hurt and disappointment or you can take it for what it is and move on. You have now seen the worst (bar failing) and now that fear of failing is no more.

These exams are not testing what your knowledge is; it’s more of how great your memory is. Once the collective cringe-worthy sympathy dries up, you realize that the people left love you for who you are and what you are: especially your parents. You end up realizing that in life the most important thing is how you make people feel as now all the chips are down and fate is not looking very kindly, the people still there are what really matter. To sum up, no matter what happens, your friends and family still love you and that there is nothing in the world that can change that.

As teenagers, we feel scared and embarrassed to confide in people but when you do you realize it can be an incredible, cathartic feeling.

Then I lost my Ipad .. oh good god could this week get any worse?? I don’t remember everything that happened but I think I was on the train and then went to the CPL (Calgary Public Library) and whabamm! 3 hours later, my Ipad is not in my possession any more.

At the end of the week you learn valuable lessons from everything that happens. Today my English professor said that “the ones who make the most mistakes have the best advice and that in the end they’ve seen everything life has to offer and that ensures that nothing phases them any more”. The point behind this blog post is that how ever bad your week/day is/seems, there is always a silver lining on your dark cloud.

Ciao – see you all next week.

College applications – is it worth all that effort?

0

So you think college and major scholarship applications are tiresome – try doing eleven at the same time! Not that anyone enjoys ranting about his or her life and how amazing they are for hours on end, but having a super paranoid dad who knows nothing about your academics and school life insisting that you won’t get into the majority of universities you apply to results in this madness. Well, I wouldn’t exactly burden him with all the credit; being a little directionless and a little keen on winning all the scholarships out there, a pile of paperwork/form-filling has befallen upon many unfortunate souls out there, as I have come to learn.

This image is the most representative of one’s room after the application process, no?

Whilst talking to friends, most say they are applying for three or four universities – maybe five or six at the max. Though suffocating from under those a hundred and fifty flattened trees, I had the privilege of boasting (yes, boasting – absolutely not complaining or procrastinating) about my near-dozen applications. Not to mention the increased intensity of love coming from teachers/volunteer supervisors whom you’ve pestered for the tenth recommendation letter… Yes, you’ve come to realize that all your efforts are paying off: academically, your awesomeness will be seen across the nation among the other twenty thousand applications; your relationship with teachers/supervisors is just off-the-charts stupendous. Especially when you’ve written a novel just to answer the question “Where is Waldo?” (I heard it was a question on one of the US college applications. The admission committee is wonderfully imaginative at times.)

After all this work – whether it is one, two, or fifteen applications – it is undoubtedly time-consuming and brain-freeze-levelled tiring, and I’ve often found myself wondering if it is actually worth all this effort. I mean, one could always choose two universities to apply to and be done with the whole process. I think the choice of which universities to apply to really depends on your goals – if you are as indecisive as me, it would be a good choice to apply to more universities for flexibility, given that you have the finances to pay those hundred-dollar application fees. If you are set on, for example, pursuing engineering in the oil sands industry, the suggestion is to go to a post-secondary in Alberta so your relations are secured after you graduate for career opportunities. And just remember, in the end, the process of answering those irritating leadership questions is always worth it – it makes you put into perspective what you have achieved thus far in your student career and possibly encourages you to make plans for the future. Take advantage of the thought process involved with answering those questions to pave yourself a good route to your first-choice post-secondary institution.

Hereby, I leave you with this:

If you are a grade twelve student, keep going! There is only a couple months left before graduation; your voyage to the New World is seeking closure. Give it your all with those diploma exams. To the grade elevens and tens: start planning for your applications! Preliminary research helps in the decision process (especially for those with interest in US universities – The Common Application is open to students starting as early as the summer of grade eleven).

Video of the Day: To This Day

1

A collaboration between dozens of artists around the globe,
a beautifully crafted piece carrying a poignant, powerful message –

we’ve all been there.

What really touched me in this video was the effects of bullying, carried on long after adolescence, to this day.

What to do? We’ve all heard those presentations. But the message remains the same:

don’t stay silent.

If nothing else, if this piece moved you, share the message

and share your (beautiful) smile – it could make a big difference.

St. Patrick’s Chocolate Cupcakes with Mint Cream Cheese Icing

0

March brings St. Patrick’s Day, and for a green, themed treat try Chocolate Cupcake with Mint Cream Cheese Icing. Cream Cheese Icing is already a tasty treat; the minty kick brings an unexpected delight, while matching the icing colour perfectly. These cupcakes will be sure to remind friends that even the smallest holidays are worth celebrating, and that homemade baking is infinitely better then store-bought!

For a chocolate-y, fluffy base use Hersey’s Perfectly Chocolate Cupcakes:

2 cups sugar
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa (best quality available)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (best quality available)
1 cup boiling water

Lining some muffin tins with paper liners heat the oven to 350*F. Mix together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla by beating on medium speed. Stir in boiling water, the batter will have a consistency similar to a

milkshake, then using a spouted cup or jug pour the batter in, making the liners ¾ full. Bake cupcakes for 22-24 minutes.

To complement the chocolate flavor, and make the cupcakes festive, mix up the mint icing mint icing. The recipe used was glorioustreats.com Peppermint Cream Cheese Frosting, because the rich flavor of cream cheese always deepens and compliments chocolate, and makes for a rich icing.

1/2 cup (1 stick, 8 Tablespoons) butter, at room temperature
6 oz. cream cheese, at room temperature (about 3/4 of a regular block of cream cheese)
4 cups powdered confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon pure peppermint extract (I found some at my local supermarket)
1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 to 3 Tablespoons heavy cream or whipping cream

Blend butter in a mixing bowl. Add and blend in cream cheese. Gradually add confectioners’ sugar, blend on low speed until combined, then increase speed and beat until fluffy. Add the vanilla and peppermint extracts. Gradually add cream until you’ve reached the desired consistency. Blend until fluffy.

Now, what can I say about these cupcakes? They’re fantastic. That’s really all that needs to be said. They baked beautifully; doming up in the warmth of my oven, until reaching chocolatey and spongy perfection. This is my new favourite chocolate cupcake recipe, the texture and lightness was unbelievably delicious.

My love of cream cheese icing won me over when choosing icing, I had to try this one. I was impressed with the results, although cream cheese and mint sound like a strange combination the icing turned out great, smooth and sweet, with undertones of rich cream cheese mixed with the refreshing flavour of mint; simply melt in your mouth delicious.

This is one of the best cupcake recipes I have ever made, it was simple, easy, and delicious, definitely worth a try!

To make these cupcakes scream St. Patty’s add a couple drops of green food colouring to the icing last thing before frosting. Green or shamrock sprinkles and cupcake liners add an extra touch.

Tab for a Cause

0

So it’s been a while since I last posted, university and time add together to an equation us engineers don’t exactly understand!  Anyways, just wanted to drop by to show this extension made for Firefox and Chrome that makes donating as easy as opening a new tab.

Tab for a Cause is a non-profit organisation that uses money from their sponsors and ads in custom “new tabs” that go towards different charities.  Though limited, they do include those such as water.org, Save the Children and more.   All of them are great, but you get the choose the frequency of which charity you want to donate to more!  So as long as you tab, you should feel good about yourself.  Every time a tab is opened, you’re donating.  The amazing thing is, you don’t truly realise how fast it will tally up, an avid internet user will probably open upwards of tens of dozens in a day!  And if you’re feeling bored and a burst of humanitarianism is found within you, just spam the new tab button!  It’s that easy, what else are you waiting for?  Tabs don’t open themselves!

At first glance, I thought this was some sort of exceptional painting that took goodness knows how long to perfect. I was surprised to find that this is actually a real life photo of a Hawaiian volcano spewing lava into the sea, taken under extremely risky conditions. Obviously lava burns (excuse the pun), and straying too close will not end well. I’m simply blown away by the beauty of this picture, and at the remarkable talent and challenges of these photographers.

A Bite of China

3

I have always disliked documentaries (you know especially those ones you watch in social class…ugh), so when my friends were telling me about A Bite of China, I was not too excited about it.

“But it’s about Chinese food, you like food right?”

“Sure.” I said, clicked on the link she sent me. And it was BOOM! Love at first sight.

According to wiki, A Bite of China (Chinese: 舌尖上的中国) is a 2012 Chinese documentary television series on the history of food, eating, and cooking in China directed by Chen Xiaoqing and narrated by Li Lihong. It first appeared at the China Central Television in May 14th, 2012, and quickly gained much popularity. Having started filming in March 2011, This seven-episode documentary series introduces the history and story behind foods of various kinds in more than 60 locations all around China. The documentary has also been actively encouraged as a means of introducing Chinese culture to foreigners, forming a component of China’s soft power.

There are seven episodes in total:

  1. Nature’s Gift
  2. The Story of Staple Foods
  3. The Inspiration of Transformation
  4. The Taste of Time
  5. Secrets of the Kitchen
  6. Balancing the Five Tastes
  7. Our Rural Heritage

If you want to check out this beautifully-shot and mouth-watering documentary series (with English subs of course), click here for the first episode (and the following episodes will appear in the “featured videos” list).

Do you know an undercover superhero?

0

YouthCentral_51vThey don’t wear capes, masks, or fly, and they can’t turn invisible or breathe underwater. This post is about real-life superheroes in our everyday society. Teens striving to make each day better than the one before, both for themselves, their community, and the world as a whole. For many of these youth who have chosen an admirable way to live, it can be hard to know that what they are doing is truly impacting others. That’s why nominating a teen for an award is huge. Step up and tell them you care, gather others to compile all your nominee does, and share their ways with the world!

There are different awards out there, and here I’ve compiled three different ones.

Calgary Awards: These city-sponsored awards are for citizens who strive to make the community a better place. There are different categories, including one that youth (and only youth) are eligible for. It’s called “youth” (shocker, isn’t it…). Deadline: March 1, 2013                                                                                                                                  http://www.calgary.ca/CA/City-Clerks/Pages/Administration-services/Calgary-Awards/Calgary-Awards.aspx?redirect=/calgaryawards

Leadership Awards: hosted by volunteer calgary, these awards are available for a variety of categories, including categories for elementary/junior high/senior high students! Deadline: not too sure… http://www.volunteercalgary.ab.ca/programs/leadership_awards.html

And the best for last! As you may know, youthareawesome.com (this blog) is part of Youth Central, and the Conocophilips Youth of Distinction Awards (YODA) is also affiliated with Youth Central:  I say these are the best, because they are all for youth, and there are a number of categories, ALL of which are for youth age 13-18! Nominate a teen in your life who has chosen a remarkable way to live. Make sure to look over what each category means!             ***Deadline: March 4, 2013***                                                                                                                 http://youthcentral.com/yoda/

As you can see, some of the deadlines are coming VERY SOON, so if you know an undercover superhero, join the race to nominate and give them the chance to be acknowledge for the admirable life they have chosen!

Now, just as some inspiration… these are a few quotes I found really meaningful, and they really relate to the idea of recognizing people who do a lot for others, and also about being that person and living valiantly. Just some stuff to ponder….

Forbidden Love

2

Forbidden love, the topic of almost every book and movie made for teenage girls. So what makes these stories so addictive and appealing? Because I love you that much, I have done the research to find answers. I read and saw the zombie love story Warm Bodies and I have studied the ways of a Twilight fangirl. ( Did you really think I would read that? I am really quite offended.)

Danger Factor: Doesn’t every girl just love the excitement of not knowing weather or not your zombie boyfriend is going to have a sudden craving for brains? How about that reassuring feeling you get when your vampire boyfriend wants to go on a walk in a deserted forest, and you know he hasn’t drank anybody’s blood in a really long time?

Warm Bodies
Warm Bodies

The attractiveness of the dead, fanged and furry: I for one would love a sparkly boyfriend, and if that means that I would have to risk my life to get one, I would do it in a heartbeat! Or how about a really muscular boyfriend that can turn into an adorable fury werewolf at anytime. It’s like having a little baby puppy, you get the cuteness and the furriness! Who knew that rotting flesh is actually more soft and irresistible than the flesh of a live person?

Teen Wolf
Teen Wolf

Rebellion: Whenever theses characters find their boyfriends, it’s usually in the worst possible time! I don’t think it’s such a good idea to date the reason the world is in a post apocalyptic state. Also, when your town is being overrun by vampires, you probably shouldn’t date one, people might get mad.

The Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diaries

Well I will never understand this whole forbidden love thing. But then again, I don’t think I will ever understand un forbidden love either!
